contributions from the Clubs who madepresentations made it clear just howvaried Club activities are, and how theycombine to continue our Club philoso-phy. There was also intensive discus-sion of how the Cayenne should beintegrated into the Clubs. I am quitesure that many of the suggestions andpersuasive examples will since havebeen carried forward in your ownorganisations.

The professionalism demonstrated inimplementing the varied activities, in particular the integration of our third series into the Porsche Clubs, deserves our special thanks. Also joy-ful is the high value that is now placedon work with young people and poten-tial future members – with its suitabili-ty for families, the Cayenne definitelyprovides a great many opportunities inthis area.

For Porsche itself, the last few monthshave also been about redefining thelimits. The high performance CarreraGT sports car, which was awarded the“Best automobile innovation of theyear” in the USA even before it hadbeen delivered to the first customers, demonstrates our expertise in theconstruction of high performancesports cars and provides new emo-tional impetus to our entire range ofsports cars. In the year of its 40thbirthday, the 911 series had five newmodel versions and was the focus ofparticular public attention, not least atthe IAA in Frankfurt. Last but not least,at the end of November the Carrera4S Cabriolet was voted the best open-top sports car in the world by an inter-national jury in Milan.

Porsche is now celebrating the 50thbirthday of the 550 Spyder with a pow-

Editorial

Dear Porsche Club Members,

An extremely busy year is behind us.Because of the worldwide launch ofthe Cayenne, 2003 was a year thatcarried a great many hopes and expec-tations for us and our partners in thedealership organisation. And all ourefforts have paid off: Porsche hasonce again seen a record year. Theextremely positive customer accept-ance of the Cayenne succeeded inmore than compensating for the slowdown in the sports car sector. TheCayenne, which has been graduallylaunched onto world markets sinceDecember 2002, made a significantcontribution to our business successlast year, with sales of 20,603. Interms of sports cars, as well as theBoxster I would particularly like to men-tion the 911, which achieved its sec-ond highest sales figure ever. Overall,we managed to increase our sales by23.2% on the previous year, to 66,803vehicles.

The Carrera GT, our new Super Sportcar with approval for on-road use, hasnow been delivered to the first cus-tomers. Like the Cayenne, this limitededition is produced in Leipzig. While I presented our customer and discov-ery centre in Leipzig in my foreword tolast February's issue of the PorscheClub News, many of you have now taken the opportunity to visit our newcontact point for Porsche enthusiastsfor yourselves. Since then, Clubs fromall over the world have been on facto-ry visits or taken part in driving pro-grammes.

Some of them have used the customerand discovery centre for their ownevents, and combined these withextensive test drives on the break-inand test track and our off-road course. The article “Porsche Leipzig – ThePlace for Events” starting on Page 12provides a further insight into every-thing that is on offer.

The highlight of all the Club events inLeipzig last year was definitely theInternational Porsche Club Presidents’Meeting, when we were able to welcome Presidents of the nationalPorsche Clubs and Porsche Clubumbrella organisations, as well as theClub Coordinators from our nationalsales partners worldwide. The eventhad the motto “Cayenne – Redefiningthe Limits”, and around 200 Club rep-resentatives got to discover and expe-rience the Cayenne over several days, taking a look behind the scenes of pro-duction of the IMAX film “Top Speed”,in which the Cayenne played a leadingrole, and getting to know our customerand discovery centre in detail.

However, most important was the sharing of ideas in the workshops. The

erful special model of the Boxster S,limited to 1953 cars, which had itsworld premiere in Detroit USA, in Jan-uary 2004 and further improves theBoxster driving experience. In thiscase, many thanks to some specialequipment details and technical fea-tures. For this model year, we alsohave some attractive product surpris-es in store. The launch of seven newmodels since the beginning of thefinancial year was just the beginning!

The year ahead of us promises to bevery exciting – not least due to themany Club events planned, which willprovide a welcome number of oppor-tunities to get together again andstrengthen relationships. These eventsinclude the Europe Parade, to be heldin Spain this year, the USA Parade inTexas, the Japanese Parade in Suzukaand the South Africa Parade in Durban,to name just a few. For Classic fans, Iwould like to mention the international356 meeting in France and the international 914 meeting in theNetherlands in particular. I look for-ward to seeing you again at one eventor another this year!

Until then, on behalf of the Porsche AGboard, I hope you have a good time!

Hans Riedel

1. News from Porsche AGIn action fighting fires and saving lives

Porsche Cayenne for the voluntary fire brigade in Bietigheim-Bissingen

From now on, the voluntary fire brigadein Bietigheim-Bissingen will be one ofthe fastest and most efficient firebrigades in Baden-Württemberg. Fromtoday, the 121 firemen will be able tocall on a Porsche Cayenne as an emer-gency vehicle. Bernhard Maier, ChiefExecutive of Porsche DeutschlandGmbH, which is based in Bietigheim-Bissingen, handed over the keys and papers for the 250 horsepower,214 km/hr Porsche to Mayor Kurt Leibbrandt and Municipal Fire Chief Karl-Heinz Reichert. As the employerand supervisory authority for the fire

brigade, the Bietigheim-Bissingen towncouncil ordered the Cayenne fromPorsche this summer.

“The Cayenne is perfectly suited for ourcalls. I found that out on an extensivetest drive that I took before ordering. Itis fast but safe, has a lot of room and isequally at home on public roads or off-road. That is very important for ourwork“ was Reichert’s assessment of hisnew official vehicle.

The new bright red “command car“, asit has been officially dubbed, was fitted

with the obligatory blue lights and sirenby a special company based in Brettenbei Bruchsal. Of course, the Cayennealso has all the important functions and equipment needed for use as a fire and rescue vehicle. These includebreathing apparatus, a 12-kilogram fireextinguisher, a large first aid box, exter-nal loudspeaker, torches, searchlights, two radio sets (four metre and two metreband), a mobile phone and an extendingloading area.

In the past, the Bietigheim-Bissingen firebrigade has received an average of 250emergency calls per year and in orderto get to the site of the fire as quicklyas possible, this Cayenne has blue flash-ing lights integrated into its radiatorgrille and tailgate. Along with the blueroof lights and siren, these help to clearthe firemen's route to the emergency.

To ensure that the additional equipmentfitted still functions when the engine isturned off, the Porsche engineers fittedan extra battery. This means that thereis always sufficient power available tooperate the equipment.

Fire Chief Karl-Heinz Reichert said: “Weare grateful to the town council, whopurchased the Cayenne for us. We arehappy and proud to finally have ourPorsche.“

Last year, we sent a five-page ques-tionnaire to the committees of allPorsche Clubs. Our aim was to ask forinformation about the activities of thevarious Clubs and their assessment oftheir co-operation with the PorscheCentre, importer or Porsche sub-sidiary. We also asked them to ratetheir co-operation with the centralPorsche AG Club Coordination.

In parallel, we also ran a survey ofPorsche Club members and Porschedrivers who do not belong to a Club.In these questionnaires, which weresent out by Internet or post and alsodistributed at events, we wanted tofind out about individual attitudestowards the Clubs. We were also inter-ested in finding out people‘s opinion ofthe range of services offered by thePorsche Clubs, how satisfied they werewith their Porsche Centre and theextent to which the Porsche Internetpages are used.

Despite the extensive range of ques-tions, we received a pleasing numberof completed forms back. Many thanksto everyone who took part in this ini-tiative, not forgetting the subsidiariesand Porsche Centres, who were alsoable to supply us with a great deal of valuable information. The won infor-

mation from the responses will be tak-en into account in our future planningand we will attempt to implement manyof the suggestions received. Ultimate-ly, this Porsche Club survey should bea basis for continued excellent co-operation between the Clubs andPorsche. In the next Porsche ClubNews, we will be presenting the resultsof the questionnaires.

As a reward for taking part, there weresome valuable prizes to be won. Thefirst draw was for the questionnairesanswered by Club committees and theprize winners were as follows:

For the development of its private on-road circuit, Porsche commissionedone of the world’s most renownedexperts in the design and constructionof racetracks: Hermann Tilke. TheAachen engineer made a name for him-self in the racing world by designingand overseeing construction of theGrand Prix circuit at Sepang inMalaysia, among others. In Leipzig,Tilke created a 3.755 kilometre circu-lar break-in and test track, which hasbeen certified by the FIA and meetsthe highest possible safety standards.

When it came to the actual layout ofthe track, he decided to go for a retrodesign. This means that some of thecorners and straights are modelled onsections of world-famous internationalracetracks, including the MonacoLoews corner, the Bus Stop from Spaand the Parabolica from Monza. Thehighlight is the steep climb up a smallhill at the end of the start and finishstraight, similar to the Cork Screw corner at Laguna Seca in California.

The break-in and test track is dividedinto two sections. The 1.74 kilometretest track is used to test everyCayenne and Carrera GT completed inproduction. The 2.16 kilometre break-in track can be further divided intothree separate sections for driver safe-ty training with the Porsche Sports Driving School or other driving events.Like other Grand Prix circuits, the trackis equipped with 30 video cameras. These cameras monitor all the cornersand send moving images to the trackcontrol centre, which is one of the most modern in the world. NumerousPorsche Clubs have already complet-ed driver training here, or got to knowthe track in so-called “free driving”.

Driver training by the Sports DrivingSchool on the break-in and test trackis a highlight of any Porsche driver'svisit. From basic training through to asports driving course, Leipzig offersappropriate training for drivers at alllevels.

For anyone who comes to Leipzig topick up their Cayenne, the visit includesa drive on the break-in and test trackand the off-road course. Accompaniedby a professional instructor, they havethe chance to discover the off-roadcapabilities of the Cayenne in a vehicleprovided.

The off-road course at Porsche Leipzigpasses through an area of more than100 hectares, which until a few yearsago was used for military exercises.Securely separated from the actual off-road course, the area also provides ahabitat for many species of plants andanimals – proof that high technologyand ecology are not necessarily con-tradictory.

Porsche 356 Club Deutschland, Region “Wilder Süden”

Club Evening in Zuffenhausen Plant I

On 14th November 2003, around 50members of the Porsche 356 ClubDeutschland were welcomed by Wolfgang Streufert, DepartmentalManager of the “Porsche Exclusive andClassic Center”, in the historic build-ings of Porsche plant I. Paying no heedto it being almost winter, most of themhad travelled in their historic vehicles– clear proof of their high regard forthis particular meeting. The invitationfrom the “Porsche Exclusive and Clas-sic Center” was a première, and Wolf-gang Streufert co-operated with thePorsche Club Coordination, PorscheClassic, Porsche Deutschland and thePorsche Museum to put together anattractive programme, which beganwith a champagne reception. After a wel-come by Wolfgang Streufert and Her-mann Maraun from the Porsche 356Club, it was time for the sightseeingtour, on which the guests had thechance to see not only museum pieceslike the Porsche 356 Roadster No. 1and the Porsche 908 Langheck, butalso the brand new Carrera GT.

In the “hallowed halls” of the restora-tion workshops, the visitors found outat first hand what the perfect restora-tion of a good old 356 really involves. The Porsche “oldie experts” from thevarious specialist areas including pipework, engine construction, chassis/electrics, leatherwork and the paint

shop were on hand to talk about thevehicles and engines currently in theircare. This look behind the scenesmade the guests’ eyes light up, as theywere standing at the birthplace of theirown cars, so to speak.

Today, plant I plays a crucial role in thepreservation, care and maintenance ofhistoric vehicles. Here, the individualcharacter of a classic car is faithfullyrevived, so that it effortlessly meetsthe same high demands made of itdecades before.

In his presentation, Departmental Man-ager Wolfgang Streufert paid particu-lar attention to the area of restorationin the Exclusive and Classic Center. Here is an extract from his presenta-tion:

“When it comes to original Porscherestoration in plant I, preserving valuesis the guiding principle. We view everyPorsche as a work of art. It reflectsour definition of individuality and the

personality of its driver. In order to preserve this individual character, weact according to strict principles. Forexample, almost every item of workcarried out on the vehicle during orig-inal restoration is overseen by our spe-cialised team and is performed withinthe factory walls. We also use originalparts or parts specially produced byourselves, in order to preserve the perfect look of the vehicle and prima-rily to ensure that their technical function is perfect. Ultimately, the vehicle was not just built to look good,it was built to reveal the experience ofdriving a Porsche in typical sportystyle.

Our technical capabilities for restoringa Porsche are state of the art andamazingly diverse. For example, thecathodic anti-corrosion immersionbath seals the bodywork and providesoptimum preparation for painting. Theintegration of original restoration workinto the Porsche Exclusive and ClassicCenter gives us access to machines, tools and testing and measuring apparatus far beyond the standardrange of equipment. This allows us toachieve a high degree of specialisa-tion. Within our own factory walls, wehave the opportunity to pass vehiclesthrough all the departments necessaryto preserve the authenticity of aPorsche.

Vehicles are not only restored withextreme care and professionalism byexperts, every procedure in a com-plete restoration is recorded in writtenand photographic documentation. Thisdocumentation is presented to the customer in an exclusive hand-madeleather folder, along with an electronicparts catalogue and a brochure fromthe Exclusive and Classic Center. Our

cessful and informative evening, whicheveryone had thoroughly enjoyed.

Guatemala Sports Driving School

On 11th October 2003, the PorscheClub de Guatemala invited membersto its second sports driving schoolintroductory course at the “Autodro-mo Los Vulcanes” racetrack. The firstcourse had been held in April 2003.Around ten drivers took this opportu-nity to optimise their driving skills onthis track, perfectly situated at the footof two active volcanoes on the out-skirts of Guatemala City.

In the afternoon, the weather changedfrom sunshine to heavy subtropicalrain. Nevertheless, the instructors puttheir faith in the driving abilities andprudence of the Porsche Club mem-bers. They did not call the event off, instead they allowed everyone to con-tinue with their laps – and everyonethought it was excellent. “That wasactually the best part of the training –learning how to keep control of the careven with conditions like this wettrack”, said Juerg Widmer, PorscheClub President.

The sun reappeared right on cue forthe start of the slalom competition andprovided atmospheric light as the participants enthusiastically set aboutdemonstrating the skills they hadlearned in a race against the clock.

Porsche Club de GuatemalaPresident: Juerg WidmerTel.: +502 631 20 33Fax: +502 631 20 34

The participants learnt the basics ofdriving on a racetrack from the twoofficial Porsche instructors from Germany, Harald Becker and GunnarWilss. First of all, they looked at thecorrect seat position. The participantsthen got to drive on the track in twosmall groups. The first item on theagenda was braking exercises, includ-ing braking to a stop in front of anobstruction and driving around anobstruction using the ABS braking system.

The second section dealt with corner-ing, something that everyone had donebefore of course. However, the instruc-tors place great emphasis on the theo-retical component, with good reason. On a racetrack there are certain thingsto be taken into account in order to beable to take corners at the maximumpossible speed. Therefore, the instruc-tors stipulated a braking point, theapex and the end of the corner inadvance. Straight after these explana-tions, the drivers had the chance totake their cars through a series of corners and improve their driving style.

Afterlunch on the beach, a huge anniver-sary cake was cut and there was plenty of time for us to talk shop anddiscuss future Club activities.

Porsche Club of South Africa, Gauteng Region

Ladies' Journey into the Kalahari

One morning in July 2003, two ladiesset off from Johannesburg in SouthAfrica for a tour of the green area ofthe Kalahari. Ahead of them was 3,000kilometres of driving over the next fivedays, which would take them to themost beautiful sites in the region. Butwhat was the reason for the trip? Likemany others, they were fascinated byreports of a lost city, supposedly discovered in the Kalahari by an American at the end of the 19 th century, but whose existence has never been confirmed despite inten-sive searches.

So it was that Tamara and Debbie madetheir way to the Northern Cape where, despite the rock hard ground and thehellish climate, bushes and trees actu-ally grow. This region is a paradise forbirds of prey, porcupines, meerkatsand many other animals, which are notrestricted to the game parks but canbe seen close to main roads.

As well as the interesting fauna, theregion is also home to impressive natural monuments, which the ladiesmade sure they did not miss out on.Nonetheless, they never lost sight ofthe real reason for their journey andwere always on the lookout for cluesto the lost city.

First of all, they visited the green oasisof Kuruman where, in the centre of the village, you can find the “Eye ofKumuran” – a freshwater spring withclear, warm water. This was followedby Wonderwerk, an archaeological sitewith an exhibition of ancient bushmanart. You learn a great deal there. Didyou know, for example, that a specialplant was once reared, which was usedas a soft underlay for the nighttimecamp? It is also possible to crawlthrough a recently discovered cave, now open to visitors. Its beauty isample reward for the torture of gettingto it.

A game park close to Kuruman, wherea surprisingly deep crater can be foundin the otherwise totally flat landscape, was a source of particular excitement. Thanks to a navigational error, the twotravellers somehow ended up in almostimpassable country better suited toall-wheel drive vehicles, and startled apair of unfortunate wildebeest.

Further highlights of the journey includ-ed the wine region of Kakamas, whereseveral watermills dating back over100 years are still in operation, andthe canyons and waterfalls of Augra-bies National Park. The Ararat Canyonis often called the Grand Canyon of

South Africa, and it was there thatTamara and Debbie witnessed twoeagles fighting over their prey directlyin front of their eyes.

Their route continued towards the bor-der with Namibia, and it is in this regionthat the mysterious city is said to belocated. A long, rough sandy track ledthem to a dry salt lake with an area ofaround 10,000 hectares. Suddenly, 75kilometres from the nearest town, theywere confronted with a sign saying“Lost City”. But that was all, the cityitself remained hidden and so theladies returned to Uppington – theircar packed full to bursting with luggage, maps and a large collectionof rocks and crystals.

To all intents and purposes, it was atour that many people here in Africaundertake, except for the fact that the two women were driving a 1985Porsche Carrera. Its endurance amazedthe local people, particularly thosedriving off-road vehicles. The onlyproblem encountered on the wholejourney involved one radar trap, whichthe ladies unfortunately passed a littlebit too quickly.

Porsche Club Tirol

Joint Initiative with Innsbruck-Mitterweg Porsche Centre

“I think this kind of meeting betweenPorsche customers and Porsche Clubmembers can be very successful forboth parties, and I recommend thateveryone should do likewise”, saidWerner Kobler, President of thePorsche Club Tirol, and all you can dois agree with him.

He is referring to an event at the Innsbruck-Mitterweg Porsche Centre, which he had organised with the Centre’s Brand Manager GerhardMaierhofer – a joint event for Porschecustomers and Club members.

The welcome speech at the so-calledsportsmen's meeting was given byhost Erwin Cassar, and was followed bya presentation by Helmuth Totschnig. The Sales Manager from Porsche Austria talked about the Porsche company, the worldwide organisation and the significance of the PorscheHolding in Austria.

The President of the Porsche Club Tirolthen had the opportunity to provide thePorsche customers and “potentialmembers” in attendance with an inter-esting insight into the life of the Club.In particular, the photographs of racing scenes taken from the cockpitof a GT3 during a race in the PorscheAlpine Trophy racing series met withgreat interest from the audience.

Of course, there were plenty of greatvehicles to marvel at, including the CupGT3 belonging to Club member UdoSchifer, a new Turbo Cabriolet and aCayenne fitted with special Tequipmentcomponents. Thanks go to the Inns-bruck-Mitterweg Porsche Centre forproviding the culinary delights, butthey were certainly not the only reasonwhy the guests stayed behind and

enjoyed friendly conversation untilalmost midnight.

The event was a winner for everyone. The Porsche Centre was able to offerits customers a varied and interestingprogramme, while the Club may wellhave succeeded in interesting someof those customers in Club member-ship. As our President said: we rec-ommend that everyone follow ourexample.

Porsche Club Wien

8th Race in Alpine Trophy

Will there be snow or will it be a goldenOctober weekend? That was the ques-tion on the minds of drivers when they received their invitations to the2003 season finale, to be held on 18th October 2003 at the Automotodrom inBrno.

As the overall championship in someclasses was still up for grabs, theorganisers at the Porsche Club Wiencould once again look forward to a first-class field of entrants. More than50 starters took this final opportunityto go head to head with their rivals, improve their points totals or simply tospend an enjoyable weekend withfriends.

The track was available from Friday, and many of the drivers used this dayto familiarise themselves with the trackand the braking points. The eveningevent at the Hotel Myslivna was wellattended and reflected the excellentatmosphere that would be in evidencethe following day on the track.

Things got underway at 8.45 am withthe drivers’ meeting. The sun was shining in a cloudless sky but the thermometer was still hovering per-sistently around freezing point. The figures that faced race co-ordinatorJoe were suitably wrapped up againstthe elements. And in their minds, theywere already out on the track.

As usual, the day's racing began withfree driving, divided into Super Sportand slicks categories, as well as ClubSport and Porsche Club driver train-ing. But let it never be said that theClub Sport drivers are slower than theothers. They are just more consistent– and as the focus is not just on speed, they have a more considerate drivingstyle. One or two of the “trainee driv-ers” managed to keep up with a ClubSport driver for a lap – but what countsis endurance, both physical and mental.

At 11.00 it was down to business withqualifying for the slicks drivers todetermine their starting positions forthe first race. In contrast to the freshair at 3°C, the surface of the track wasa pleasantly warm 14°C, but the tyresstill did not want to achieve optimumadhesion. That is perhaps the reasonwhy “Big Mac” Michael Zitzmann spunoff shortly after the start of training. His fast reactions and four lockedwheels prevented a heavy impact withthe crash barrier and he was able toget back on his South South Westcourse under his own steam with onlya broken bumper.

Completely unmoved by all this action, the golfers (yes, you did read it cor-rectly) continued on their way from holeto hole. In the centre of the racetrackis a golf course and even a shootingrange.

The aim of the men in the Super Sportsection is to complete their laps in consistent times, but this is not alwayspossible with 25 cars on the track. While some insist on driving flat out atall times, as this means you are con-stantly driving consistently fast rightat the limit, others prefer to adopt aslightly slower pace – to allow somemargin for driving errors or difficultovertaking manoeuvres. Whatever thereasons, it is always amazing to seethe range of times! The reference laptimes ranged from 2:23.133 min. to2:45.920 min.

Shortly after midday, it was time forthe Club Sport drivers to get down to business for the first time. Ten laps, the second as a reference lap – and off they go! In this section, the spectators got a good overview ofPorsche’s range of products: Boxster,Speedster, 964 in Cup and RS ver-sions, 993, 996, Turbo, Biturbo – anda 924, which may not have been thefastest but was certainly the loudest.

After lunch, it was time for the spec-tators to enjoy the first sprint race in the slicks class. Apart from the two “964 purists” Michael Bubla and Heiner Wackerbauer, only 993s and996s were entered – most of them Cup versions. This makes it easier to follow, as the positions on the track

are exactly the same as the final placings. However, as variety is partof the Alpine Trophy philosophy, it ishoped that the other classes will bebetter represented again next year.

After the time trials, it was time for theSuper Sport drivers to return to thetrack for their speed competition. Butfirst they had to qualify to sort out the starting positions. A total of 25vehicles from classes 2 to 6 went out in search of the fastest time. If there is only one starter in a class, they compete in the next class down! Thecompetition is based on idealism andenjoyment of motorsport.

Shortly before 5.00 pm, with a heavyheart race co-ordinator Joe started thelast race of the 2003 season, namelythe second Club Sport time trial. Asnot all of the positions in the individualclasses had been decided, all theentrants lined up with the same enthu-siasm as at the very beginning of theseason.

Well, the Alpine Trophy 2003 seasonhas finished now. Fantastic motor-sport, excellent racetracks and friend-ly people – I will miss you all! Praisegoes to all drivers for all their effortsand achievements over the season.

To mark our anniversary, we organiseda weekend excursion to Lake Garda. We started on Friday morning fromBasle. We managed to keep togetherin a single group almost all the way toZurich, which meant that some peopleon the motorway had the pleasure ofseeing almost all the Porsche modelsfrom the last ten years driving by. Aftera short stop in the Glarner region, theconvoy broke up and everyone droveat their own pace over the Julier Pass.

We continued via Silvaplana, the MajolaPass and through Bergell to our meet-ing point at the “Grotto Ghiggi” imme-diately after the Italian border. There,we parked in a specially reserved areain front of an inn, where we spent ourlunch break. Our journey then took usvia Chiavenna and Bergamo to LakeGarda and Costermano – a small vil-lage in the mountains above Garda. This was where we were staying, atthe Boffenigo Boutique Hotel, whichoffers a fantastic view over Garda andthe Lake. By the time dinner wasserved, everyone had arrived, with only

one person getting lost in Italy and having to be guided to the hotel bytelephone.

As they enjoyed the extensive break-fast on Saturday, everyone was puzzlingover the course that had been set upon the hotel terrace. The solution wasdefinitely a surprise. The entire grouphad to compete in a trick cycling com-petition. Our President had broughtalong the necessary bicycles from agroup of cycling artistes in Basle. Oneof them had the wheel hub slightly offcentre, while another had a rubberframe, making you think you were rid-ing through potholes. Using these con-traptions, we had to complete a slalomcourse, to the great delight of theonlookers. For the second run, weswitched to scooters. Meanwhile, ourPresident was diligently noting down all the times and penaltypoints.

The rest of the day was free, and somepeople used the time for shopping inSirmione. In the evening, everyone met

up again on the terrace, where a won-derful dinner was served. The winnersof our exhausting morning event werealso honoured. We then chatted anddanced until late into the night, and wedid not set out for home until quite lateon Sunday.

Asheville in North Carolina is situatedin the Blue Ridge area, part of a beau-tiful mountain range that runs fromNorth to South in the East of the USA.It is an inviting and irresistible region. No wonder then that people flocked tothe 356 Register's East Coast Holidayin September. It was a four-day partywith 570 guests, more than 200Porsche 356s and several newerPorsche models. The event showed offall the charm, beauty and culture ofthe region.

Wednesday was the arrival day, andthe programme started on Thursday. In small groups, the guests drove tothe “Tail of Dragon”, Mount Mitchelland Chimney Rock Park. Those whoneeded a walk after all the driving hadthe chance to check out the range ofantiquities in Asheville or to find outwhat the local handicrafts and cuisinehave to offer. The evening reception inthe streets of Biltmore Village provid-ed an opportunity to greet old friendsand make new ones, while enjoyingfood and drinks from the local restau-rants and wine bars.

Before the event, everyone had beentalking about spectacular drives, butthe excursion accompanied by Bill Durland on the Friday exceeded every-one's expectations. The corners andhairpin bends in the Blue Ridge Parkwere tailor-made for the 356. In thenumerous tunnels, the 356 driversgreeted one another by hooting their horns, a noise that reminded atleast one person of ducks quacking. Later, there was time to relax and enjoyan ice cream amidst the countlessPorsche books, models and memora-bilia before heading back into town forthe evening.

Porsche Club 914 de France

International 914 Meeting in Deauville

International? It certainly was! Our 914meeting in Deauville, held from 19th to21st September 2003, was attendedby people from Great Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Portugal, the USA and of course France.

A total of 35 Porsche 914s gatheredin Saint Gatien close to Deauville. Fri-day afternoon was set aside for check-ing in, and the activities planned forthe following two days, including anexcursion, were then presented duringdinner that evening. Equipped with amap and a road book, the first teamset off in their car at 8.15 on Saturdaymorning.

The journey took us through Pontl'Eveque and we visited the motormuseum in the chateau at Betteville. Alot of photos were taken at this lovelyspot, especially as the sun was shin-ing and the group included some veryinteresting vehicles. A charming Englishcouple presented their single owner914 while the French 914 with Spor-tomatic, which was voted the most

Everyone returned promptly to SaintGatien to get ready for the start of the gala evening, where prizes andmementoes were presented to the par-ticipants. This was the first time that a914 meeting had been held in France– and it was a great event.

attractive car at the English meetingthe previous year, was also in atten-dance. The guests could also marvelat a 914/6, faithfully restored down tothe smallest sealing ring. Conversationno doubt centred primarily on the 914,a topic that overcame any languagebarriers.

The group of 914s then set off for thecasino in Deauville. They were led bywhat is, to the best of our knowledge, the only right-hand drive 914. Oncethey arrived at their destination, thevehicles were arrayed right next to thesea. After lunch at the casino, we con-tinued further into the Normandy coun-tryside, where we visited a Calvadosdistillery at the chateau in Breuil.

The meeting included a small compe-tition, with participants being askedfor the ignition sequence of a Porschesix-cylinder engine and having toarrange model cars in chronologicalorder, while an address game usingboules was organised.
