Thales and ThalesraytheonSystems have investedsignificantly in new radar technologies in recentyears; developing innovative air defence radarsystems that are capable of handling today’s andtomorrow’s threats. The GrOUnd Master radarsare a family of versatile, multi-role air defence radars,dedicated to the protection of key assets and forcesdeployed in remote theatres. The GrOUnd Masterradars are specifically designed to meet thefollowing operational requirements: high detectionperformance, high track accuracy, weaponassignment, high operational availability andsimplified maintenance as well as high mobility.

The GrOUnd Master radar systems can detect a vastarray of modern-day threats, including UAvs, missiles,mortars and rockets and at critical ranges and altitudes.

As military threats have evolved and become lesspredictable, the accuracy and granularity of dataavailable from radars is increasingly important to

operators and decision-makers entrusted with theprotection of assets, passengers, civilians and armedforces. The GrOUnd range of air surveillance radarsdetect from very low to very high altitude against anytype of threat.

Fastest missiles in their class

A world leader for over 50 years in the design andmanufacture of high precision Air defence missilesand fire control systems, Thales has established aheritage of industry hallmarks such as Seacat,Tigercat, Blowpipe, Javelin and Starburst.

Our current Thales STAr missiles, vT1 and STArStreakare the fastest SHOrAd and vSHOrAd missiles in theworld today and this recognizes the key time criticalrequirement of short range air defence. in addition tothe shortest time to target vT1 and STArStreak operateon “line of sight” guidance principles that means thatthe operator is assured that the missile can be launchedas soon as the threat is identified, and then will guideto the designated targets.

Unlike higher cost seeker based missile systems vT1 and StarStreak: – do not require seeker cool-down and lock-on time

before launch– cannot be decoyed by countermeasures– do not require any regular maintenance and support– can be cut down in flight if required.

Thales is vastly experienced in the integration of complexsystems for Air defence. We are engaged in developing advancedair-defence solutions for governments worldwide.

Typically, long before an Air defence programme is formally started,we support our customers in defining their requirements, using variousoperational analysis tools, in order to establish and share a commonunderstanding of threats and missions. Through an interactive andcollaborative process, including battlelab and wargame scenariotesting, we progressively develop an optimised architecture, mixinglegacy and new assets in order to fulfil the operational objectives.

This use of architecture patterns then enables us to proposea customised solution, suited to the country’s specific geographyand military organisation, within a very short time.

The preferred architecture is selected after evaluation of its efficiencyin various operational scenarios, taking into account criticalevaluation criteria. in parallel with defining the architecture, we areable to propose an incremental acquisition and integration processin order to deliver operational capabilities in line with budget plans.

Thales also provides full training of the customer’s personnel andactively supports the transition to operational service, as well assystem in-service support.
