The Suburban Newspapers office is located in oneof the oldest buildings in White Settlement. The lastremaining house from Liberator Village, it was built in1941 to house employees of the plant that build WWIIbombers. Over the decades it was home to many peo-ple before becoming the newspaper office in the 1960s. Staff members have long wondered if the buildingmight be haunted by someone from its rich historicalpast. Though no ghosts have been seen, there havebeen plenty of spooky moments. While it might beeasy to assume a missing item from your desk has justbeen misplaced, not everything can be so easilyexplained. You might hear the floorboards squeak withthe weight of footsteps when nobody is in the otherroom. You might smell an undescribable scent or seean out-of-place shadow. Previous managing editor Charlsea Littlefieldsays, “When I began working at SuburbanNewspapers, in the early 70s for the older Mr.Underwood, there were many characteristics I likedabout him. One that I really enjoyed was that hesmoked a pipe with a wonderful unique vanilla aroma. “At Christmas, the office girls always bought him

a large tin of his ‘Raven’ pipe tobacco and he alwaysacted surprised. After Mr. Underwood passed, I thenworked for Mrs. Underwood for numerous years. Aftershe passed, I became the managing editor and movedinto their office and worked at their desk. “One day, all of a sudden, a sweet smell filled theroom. It was a familiar smell and then I realized whatI was smelling was the aroma of Mr. Underwood’s pipetobacco. Some didn’t believe me and said that since itwas a very old building, it could be any old lingeringsmell. “Occasionally, through those many years, thatessence would arise and then vanish. Others havesmelled it too, including their son, who owns the news-papers now. Someone would say, ‘what’s that smell?’and I would comment that it was only Mr. Underwoodcoming for a visit, which made me happy!” Lori Ball, who was managing editor after Charlsea, also recalls the familiar scent popping up on occasion.Even the current staff members have detected theunusual scent from time to time. After three-quarters of a century, no one can reallyknow everything that this building has seen and heard.

Bears Fall to Hornets by John “Jack-o-Lantern” Englishby John “Jack-o-Lantern” English The Brewer football team had its hands full on Friday night and came upshort against the 13th best team in the state. The Bears lost to Azle by a scoreof 53-14 in game that coach Todd Peterman said the Hornets played prettymuch as he expected that they would. “We played a really good football team,” Peterman said. “It was just atough, district game. We played hard throughout and our kids gave it therebest, but Azle is a very good team, and we came up short.” A bright spot in the game for Brewer was running back CorneliusHouston, who scored on two rushing touchdowns for the Bears. Brewer is 1-7 on the season and 1-5 in district competition as it preparesfor Friday night's game with Granbury, and Peterman said the objectives forhis team remain the same as they have all year. Peterman said. “We want to continue to improve each week regardless ofour record, and we have seen that from our team.” The will play the Pirates at 7 p.m. on Nov. 1 at Granbury, and Peterman

said that feels quite certain his team will be in foranother big challenge. “Granbury is a physical, much-improved teamthat is going to come to play. We'll have to beready for them,” Peterman said.

In addition to keeping your family safe whiletrick-or-treating this Halloween, it’s also importantto protect your car. More vehicles are broken into orstolen in Texas on Oct. 31 than any other day of theyear, according to data from Allstate Insurance. Allstate looked at auto claims data over the lastten years (2007-2018) and identified Oct. 31 as theday with the most car break-ins and total car thefts. “People should take precautions while trick-or-treating to ensure a safe and fun Halloween for theirchildren, but it’s important to also protect your vehi-cle and belongings while you’re out celebrating.”Says Jay Haidari, an Allstate agency owner inFrisco. “Leaving your car running while unoccu-pied, leaving your car unlocked or leaving valuablesin plain sight can lead to ruining your Halloweenfun.” Allstate recommends taking these steps to helpensure your car is safe on Oct. 31 and throughout theyear:Keep the Tricksters Out An unlocked door or rolled-down window givesthieves fast access to everything in the car. Also, never leave your vehicle running or the smart keyinside the car while it is unattended. Look Around Park in well-lit areas of the parking lot or street.Look for safety benefits like security cameras orpedestrian activity. Lights, cameras and law-abidingcitizens are turn-offs for thieves.Hide it First or Take it Along If it’s too bulky to keep in your possession, storevaluable items in the trunk of the car or out ofsight—and do it before you park. Waiting to hidevaluables until you’ve arrived can allow a thief towatch where you stow your stuff. No Tricks, Just Treats Car thieves tend to avoid cars with alarms oranti-theft devices because they attract attentionwhen they go off. Consider installing an audiblealarm system and a visible anti-theft device. Checkwith your insurance provider; you may receive a dis-count on your auto insurance for some of thesedevices. In the unfortunate event items from your car orthe car itself are stolen, it’s important to understandyour insurance coverage. Comprehensive auto insur-ance typically covers vandalism to your vehicle orreplacement value for the stolen car. Generally, that’s only if what’s stolen was factory-installed.Personal property inside or on the car— bikes, cellphones, backpacks—is typically covered by home-owners, renters or condo policies. Apartmentdwellers can find themselves unprotected if theydon’t have renters insurance. Stay safe this Halloween!
