Imani Freeman, Nakaya Cooper, Carmen Rosales and Amaria Cooper led the Lady Cougars in scoring at the tournament. Western Hills plays Castleberry on Jan. 3, and Kubicsek said the Lady Cougars need this one. “I expect it to be a big game for us,” Kubicsek said. “It is a game we need to win if we want a chance at playoffs. I’m hoping we have a great week of preparation for the game.” Over at Benbrook, the Lady Cats have been hit by the flu virus, and coach Leta Lofton said some of her younger players have had to step up. “It has been a rough few days back from the Christmas holiday,” Lofton said. “But we were able to salvage the FWC tournament by moving a couple of capable freshmen up to replace those out sick.” Lofton said Quiarra Bolton, Miah Overton, and Madison Sorrell are to be commended for leading the team in the absence of Benbrook's two captains, and freshmen Macaela Creger, Valery King, and Emily Siddig “found them- selves filling some very big shoes on the varsity level.” Benbrook plays Dunbar on Jan. 3, and Lofton said her team will have its hands full. “We will go into the Lake Worth and Dunbar game with those just return- ing from the flu, but we still have our goals set and our minds set on being successful in district play,” Lofton said. “We will put our best foot forward.” For the Benbrook boys, an 80-34 victory over Venus was a nice win just before Christmas, and coach Blake Mendez said he could not have asked for much more from his team. “We played really well against Venus,” Mendez said. “We were aggres- sive on defense, which led to some easy buckets in transition. Edith was born on July 5, 1922 in Wilson, Okla. to Bryan and LallahDumas. She moved to White Settlement in 1946 with her husband Clarence.She was a homemaker and a lifetime member of the Eastern Star. She was aloving wife and mother and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband Clarence and her son Ronald. Survivors are: son, Mike Groomer and wife, Linda; son, StephenGroomer; daughter, Ruth Groomer; and fourteen grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Local non-profit, Reading Partners, is looking tochange this statistic by empowering members of themetropolitan Fort Worth community to serve as volun-teer tutors in one of five Fort Worth ISD schools wherethey operate one-on-one reading support programs. Over at Western Hills, the Cougars defeatedGodley by a score of 67-38 on Dec. 17 and willhost Castleberry at 8 p.m. on Jan. 3.
The Western Hills wrestling team will com-pete in the Lamar tournament this week, andcoach Heath Jackson said there are a couple ofobjectives. “Lamar is a great chance to see competitionfrom the east side of the Metroplex,” Jackson said.“We have always competed well at the Lamartournament. The head coach of Lamar (GordonStephens) is the former WHHS head coach andfounder of the wrestling program.” The Cougars completed in the Texas LadyChristmas Classic, where Aaliyah Ruiz took fifthplace in a pool of 18 wrestlers in the 119 poundweight class.
The Benbrook wrestling team competed in theEMS Tournament in Saginaw in mid-December,and coach Wade Cribbs said his teams competedagainst programs from all over the state. “The girls got third overall and the boys gotfourth out of the 5A schools in attendance,” Cribbssaid.
