80th Year No. 22 817-246-2473 7820 Wyatt Drive, Fort Worth, Texas 76108 suburban-newspapers.com May 28, 2020 From the Sports Desk with John English Senior Athlete Tribute: Western Hills HS Softball With its season cut short by the COVID-19 outbreak, the Western Hills softball team never had the opportunity to see if it could repeat on the success of the 2019 program and make the play- offs again. Coach Dawn Aman said the virus has helped her players and coaches put things in perspective. “This has been a crazy season,” Aman said. “No one would have predicted something like this happening. It is so important that we learn to seize the opportunities in front of us when we can. We never know when something like COVID-19 can hit.” It has been particularly hard on the senior players, who will not get a chance to finish out their last season as hoped. Western Hills graduates Sara Baker, Ashley Belisle, Nakaya Cooper, Lauren Hukill, Karrington Nero, Ravin Valdez and Debra Williams. Aman said these athletes have meant a lot to the program. “This is a great group of young women,” Aman said. “Many have been with us since they were ninth graders and have grown with the pro- gram. It has been a pleasure to be their coach and watch them become the amazing women they are today.” Aman said when the season was initially sus- pended, her team remained positive that play would resume. “Obviously, this has been an unusual season with the COVID-19 outbreak and how it affected the season,” Aman said. “We have talked several times about staying positive throughout this. Initially, we were hopeful that we would get a chance to be out on the field again. Sadly, that did not happen. The experience has been hard for all of us, but especially the seniors. So many of their experiences have been taken away due to COVID- 19. But they have handled these disappointments with grace and maturity.” Aman said it is her desire that this year's sen- iors realize the impact they had on the Lady Cougar softball program. “I hope the seniors take the life lessons they have learned through the years and continue to be successful in life,” Aman said. “All of them have plans after high school to go to college or join the military. They are destined for great things in the future. We will truly miss them next year.” Sign up to have the free digital edition of the Benbrook News sent to your inbox weekly! Click Here SUBSCRIBE

Suburban Newspapers, Inc May 28, 2020, PAGE 4Published with Permission from the Obama FoundationGraduate Together: America Honors the High School Class of 2020 On Saturday, May 16, President BarackObama spoke during Graduate Together: AmericaHonors the High School Class of 2020. Heencouraged young people to be brave, do the rightthing, and build community. He also acknowl-edged what we as a community have already seen- the Class of 2020 is full of amazing leaders, cre-ative minds, and hardworking individuals who arealready on the right path. The address can be viewed online athttps://www.obama.org/updates/president-oba-mas-graduation-message-class-2020/. A transcript of his address follows:

I couldn’t be prouder of all of you in the grad-uating Class of 2020 – as well as the teachers, coaches, and most of all, parents and family whoguided you along the way.

Now, graduating is a big achievement underany circumstances. Some of you have had to over-come serious obstacles along the way, whether itwas an illness, or a parent losing a job, or living ina neighborhood where people too often count youout. Along with the usual challenges of growingup, all of you have had to deal with the added pres-sures of social media, reports of school shootings, and the specter of climate change. And then, justas you’re about to celebrate having made itthrough, just as you’ve been looking forward toproms and senior nights, graduation ceremonies –and, let’s face it, a whole bunch of parties – theworld is turned upside down by a global pandem-ic. And as much as I’m sure you love your parents,I’ll bet that being stuck at home with them andplaying board games or watching Tiger King onTV is not exactly how you envisioned the last fewmonths of your senior year.

Now I’ll be honest with you – the disappoint-ments of missing a live graduation, those will passpretty quick. I don’t remember much of my ownhigh school graduation. I know that not having tosit there and listen to a commencement speakerisn’t all bad – mine usually go on way too long. Also, not that many people look great in thosecaps, especially if you have big ears like me. Andyou’ll have plenty of time to catch up with yourfriends once the immediate public health crisis isover.

But what remains true is that your graduation

marks your passage into adulthood – the timewhen you begin to take charge of your own life. It’s when you get to decide what’s important toyou: the kind of career you want to pursue. Whoyou want to build a family with. The values youwant to live by. And given the current state of theworld, that may be kind of scary.

If you’d planned on going away for college, getting dropped off at campus in the fall, that’s nolonger a given. If you were planning to work whilegoing to school, finding that first job is going to betougher. Even families that are relatively well-offare dealing with massive uncertainty. Those whowere struggling before, they’re hanging on by athread.

All of which means that you’re going to haveto grow up faster than some generations. This pan-demic has shaken up the status quo and laid bare alot of our country’s deep-seated problems – frommassive economic inequality to on-going racialdisparities to a lack of basic health care for peoplewho need it. It’s woken a lot of young people upto the fact that the old ways of doing things justdon’t work; that it doesn’t matter how muchmoney you make if everyone around you is hun-gry and sick; and that our society and our democ-racy only work when we think not just about our-selves, but about each other.

It’s also pulled the curtain back on anotherhard truth, something that we all have to eventual-ly accept once our childhood comes to an end. Allthose adults that you used to think were in chargeand knew what they were doing? It turns out theydon’t have all the answers. A lot of them aren’teven asking the right questions. So, if the world’sgoing to get better, it’s going to be up to you.

That realization may be kind of intimidating. But I hope it’s also inspiring. With all the chal-lenges this country faces right now, nobody cantell you “no, you’re too young to understand” or“this is how it’s always been done.” Because withso much uncertainty, with everything suddenly upfor grabs, this is your generation’s world to shape.

Since I’m one of the old guys, I won’t tell youwhat to do with this power that rests in yourhands. But I’ll leave you with three quick piecesof advice.

First, don’t be afraid. America’s gone throughtough times before – slavery, civil war, famine, disease, the Great Depression and 9/11. And eachtime we came out stronger, usually because a newgeneration—young people like you—learnedfrom past mistakes and figured out how to makethings better.

Second, do what you think is right. Doingwhat feels good, what’s convenient, what’s easy –that’s how little kids think. Unfortunately, a lot ofso-called grown-ups, including some with fancytitles and important jobs, still think that way –which is why things are so screwed up. I hope thatinstead, you decide to ground yourself in valuesthat last, like honesty, hard work, responsibility, fairness, generosity, respect for others. You won’tget it right every time, you’ll make mistakes likewe all do. But if you listen to the truth that’s insideyourself, even when it’s hard, even when it’sinconvenient, people will notice. They’ll gravitatetowards you. And you’ll be part of the solutioninstead of part of the problem.

Finally, build a community. No one does bigthings by themselves. Right now, when people arescared, it’s easy to be cynical and say let me justlook out for myself, or my family, or people wholook or think or pray like me. But if we’re goingto get through these difficult times; if we’re goingto create a world where everybody has the oppor-tunity to find a job, and afford college; if we’regoing to save the environment and defeat futurepandemics, then we’re going to have to do ittogether.

So be alive to one another’s struggles. Standup for one another’s rights. Leave behind all theold ways of thinking that divide us – sexism, racialprejudice, status, greed – and set the world on adifferent path.

When you need help, Michelle and I havemade it the mission of our Foundation to giveyoung people like you the skills and support tolead in your own communities, and to connect youwith other young leaders around the country andaround the globe.

But the truth is you don’t need us to tell youwhat to do.

Because in so many ways, you’ve alreadystarted to lead.

Congratulations, Class of 2020. Keep makingus proud.

CongratulationsClass of 2020!

Throughout high school, I’ve stayed involved withband and art. I have competed in Art shows such as theTAEA Visual Arts Scholastic Event (VASE), Districtauditions for Concert band and UIL for MarchingBand. My favorite schoolmemories include all the band trips I went on and play-ing Mafia with my classmates after begging our teach-ers to let us play a little more. I want to thank my teachers and peers for alwaysmotivating me and helping me. I also want to thank myfamily who stayed involved in all my activities andalways congratulated me on my accomplishments. I especially want to thank my mom who remindedme not to stress myself out too much, and that noteverything has to be perfect.

From the Waverly Park Garden Club

June Yard of the Month Selection

Waverly Park Garden Club has awarded Larry and Becky Knox Yard ofthe Month for June. They have lived in their home on High Ridge Road inthe Timbercreek area of Benbrook for four years. Their well established, beautifully manicured, St. Augustine front lawn isbalanced by two large Red Oak trees. Their gracefully curved flower bed, filled with cedar bark and bordered by solar lights, extends the length of theirhome and is anchored by a large Yaupon Holly on the right side. Nearest to their home is a row of individually manicured Burford Hollies,in front of which are deep burgundy rounded Chinese Fringe Flower shrubsproviding a background for variegated Liriope that stretches the length of thebed. Their garage is flanked by two smaller beds accented by a filigreed wallornament. They include Dwarf Yaupon, Liriope and a large WaxleafLigustrum. English Ivy adorns a wrought iron table and chairs at their entrance, above which in a large Boston Fern. A large bird bath, a statue of childrenunder an umbrella, and decorative pots containing red amaryllis, moss rose, hosta, and red geraniums fill the bed in front of this area. The Knox family has always enjoyed working together to maintain andcare for their attractively landscaped yard, and the backyard is equally asbeautiful.
