Thanksgiving Proclamationfrom Founders Online, National Archives and Records Administration
New York, 3 October 1789By the President of the United States of America, a Proclamation.
Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence ofAlmighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly toimplore his protection and favor—and whereas both Houses of Congress have bytheir joint Committee requested me “to recommend to the People of the UnitedStates a day of public thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledgingwith grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God especially by affordingthem an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safetyand happiness.”
Now therefore I do recommend and assign Thursday the 26th day ofNovember next to be devoted by the People of these States to the service of thatgreat and glorious Being, who is the beneficent Author of all the good that was, thatis, or that will be—That we may then all unite in rendering unto him our sincere andhumble thanks—for his kind care and protection of the People of this Country pre-vious to their becoming a Nation—for the signal and manifold mercies, and thefavorable interpositions of his Providence which we experienced in the course andconclusion of the late war—for the great degree of tranquillity, union, and plenty, which we have since enjoyed—for the peaceable and rational manner, in which wehave been enabled to establish constitutions of government for our safety and hap-piness, and particularly the national One now lately instituted—for the civil andreligious liberty with which we are blessed; and the means we have of acquiring anddiffusing useful knowledge; and in general for all the great and various favors whichhe hath been pleased to confer upon us.
And also that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers andsupplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech him to pardon ournational and other transgressions—to enable us all, whether in public or private sta-tions, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually—to renderour national government a blessing to all the people, by constantly being aGovernment of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executedand obeyed—to protect and guide all Sovereigns and Nations (especially such ashave shewn kindness unto us) and to bless them with good government, peace, andconcord—To promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, andthe encrease of science among them and us—and generally to grant unto allMankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.
Given under my hand at the City of New-York the third day of October inthe year of our Lord 1789.

The White Settlement Bomber News supports the WSISD Bears and Lady Bears!
Brewer High School Principal toStep Down After Thanksgiving Brewer High School Principal Pam Turner announced to her staff onFriday, Nov. 17 that she will retire at the end of the 2017-18 school year, andshe'll begin a new position in White Settlement ISD after the ThanksgivingBreak. "This year has been a tough year for my family and I," she said. "I needto be there to support them, and I've been given an opportunity to finish outthe remainder of the school year doing what I have always loved ... mentoringat-promise kids and preparing them for Brewer High School." Jeff Seeton, Career and Technical Education Director at Brewer for thepast four years, will serve as interim principal at the school. Turner said, "The Brewer High School students and staff deserve a leaderwho can give them 100 percent, and I'm not in a situation that enables me todo that right now." "I love Brewer High School," she said. "The students and staff have beenmy family, and serving as principal has provided me with some of my great-est memories."
The Bears finished the regular season with a 6 and 4 record but wantedto extend their season by playing at least one more game. The seniors on thisteam should be proud of their accomplishments this year and the City ofWhite Settlement should be as well. Ryan started the scoring in the first quarter with a 45 yard touchdownpass to lead 7 to nothing. The Bears responded with a good drive deep intoRaider territory but then the drive stalled. Jorge Estrada kicked a 26 yardfield goal to get the Bears on the board trailing 7 to 3. Ryan scored again inthe second quarter to go up by a score of 14 to 3. If not for a great goal linestand late in the second quarter by the Bear defense, the score would havebeen 21 to 3. The third quarter was all Denton Ryan as they held the Bears offense incheck and put three scores of their own on the board.
Brewer Bear Football (continued from page 1)
In the fourth quarter Ryan scored again to go up 42 to 3. Later in the finalquarter the Bears moved the ball down the field and Justin Davis scored from10 yards out. After the Estrada extra point the Bears trailed 42 to 10. TheBears scored again late in the final quarter as Christian Calton scored from 1yard out to tally the final score of the game with Bears on the deficit side ofa 42 to 17 loss. It is a hard way to end the season that had so many excitingplays and moments for this hard fighting Brewer Bear football team. As an alum myself, I take my hat off to the coaches, players, and ofcourse the parents who raised these young athletes. As Always, GO Bears!Bear Stats: Passing—Carson Ingram, 6-2068-0-0. Husband and children of Sandra Upshaw surprisedher with a party to celebrate her 80th birthday. A large num-ber of family, friends and neighbors attended. Sandra is anhonor graduate of Technical High School...class of '56. Shebecame a Civil Service employee shortly after graduation. In1959 she married David Upshaw, a United States Marine. They had three daughters, Donna Raney, Connie Ortiz, &Debbie James. Sadly, Donna, the oldest went to be with theLord in February 2006. Her three exceptional son-in-laws,Jesse Ortiz, Mike James, & Shelby Raney participated in thecelebration.
During three overseas deployments, including twoto Vietnam, Sandra would return to Ft. Worth. In the 1950sand 1960s military pay was low and food stamp programswere either unknown, unavailable or not widely used to sup-port pay. Sandra was steadfast not to work outside the home. She elected to babysit and be with the girls at all times dur-ing David’s long absences. The constant sound or her prized1930s Singer sewing machine was prevalent. She skillfullymade all their clothes. She often dressed the girls alike. Theyoungest daughter felt slighted on occasion, since her hand-me-downs often resembled previous outfits.
Sandra's first eighty years have been difficult, butcertainly exciting. She has traveled to every state in theUnion. Upon retirement she, and husband David, embarkedon an 8,000 mile car trip to Alaska. Memories of that adven-ture will remain forever. She has also vacationed in Mexico,Canada, Hawaii, & Japan.
Sandra's husband David says that the song of theperson that walks behind, never seeking the limelight or anyrecognition accurately describes her... She is, however, the"glue" that has bonded this family for almost 60 years. Herdeep Christian faith has helped the family endure devastat-ing hardships and grief. Most notably, the death of theirdaughter Donna.
Happy birthday, Sandra! The next 80 years will beeven more exciting.
