If we were to ask you what you thought Equality and Diversity means for you, we would almost certainly have a different meaning from a small audience and more importantly, a different interpretation and contextual understanding.

Although, the Equality Act 2010 was trumpeted as a long-overdue chance to consolidate, clarify and improve the UK’s notoriously complex equality and discrimination law. The majority of the Act has now been in force for over a year. But, has this 21st century legal instrument served its purpose? Or has this merely confused the issue and redirected focus to independence scrutiny and policing?

Either way, it’s time to talk and discuss what this means for practioners and how we can truly begin to understand the core principles of changing what we do to meet not only our legal duties but also to deliver fair and equitable services in the face of economically challenging times.

We know we are in the most fiscal of times, everywhere we look and everything we hear refers to spending and service reviews, austerity and economic downfalls. So, the sooner we accept recovery can only be sustainable if we view some of the solution we require to be one which is based on an inclusive recovery, the better we will be in terms of achieving long term benefits.

The economic problems cannot be adjusted to ignore those individuals who are at most risk of exclusion, BME indivuduals, women, young people, old people who cannot find jobs or achieve the required level of academia because of inherit and

institutional discrimination. Their contribution to the economy is essential and a prerequisite to any upturn in a positive and prosperous economy, their taxes are needed just like everyone else’s and equally important they want to work and provide aspirations to their future generations.

What is the solution then to bringing about social mobility we so often hear? The answer is not process driven it is revisiting the fundamental principles of social inclusion. Making decisions based on a different society we have now, however small and isolated groups there are they must be included in your strategic decision making processes ensuring they are fair and do not exclude any individuals or groups. In summary as Trevor Phillips stated in a recent speech-Why Equality and Human rights are essential to economic recovery:-

“Whatever the answer to Britain’s economic problems, in this recession, being fair, and being seen to be fair, will be central to the task of bringing Britain back to prosperity. Equality and inclusion are good for our economy. We aren’t making a case for special treatment. We are just asking everyone to do the right thing”.

Here’s to another successful year of celebrating our regions talent in this year’s Tees Valley BME Achievement Awards 2012. The Thistle Hotel Middlesbrough will welcome local partners and communities to share together in the annual fixture which is truly becoming one of the main equality showcases of the year. From young and budding individuals to distinguished long-standing members of the community who bring about social change the Awards ceremony plays homage to our Tees Valley heroes.

Recent changes in the Equality and Diversity landscape has presented organisations both in the public and private sector with challenges as they seek to advance race equality and deliver equitable outcomes for all protected characteristics, Never before has working in partnership to deliver common equality and diversity objectives been so important. The challenges of bringing about positive change are exasperated by the negative and misrepresented

exposure some BME communities can face. It is the pursuit of achieving the desired blue print of social integration and cohesion which is the underlying objective of the Awards ceremony, one where partners and key stakeholders can truly appreciate who our communities are and what programmes and projects can help them achieve this desired diversity utopia.

We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate all our nominees and winners and thank our supporters wholeheartedly. Without both, not only would we miss out on this fantastic opportunity to meet and celebrate truly significant contributions of BME individuals and groups, we would also see a gap in the showcasing of our culturally diverse sub-region. Nazir Afzal OBE, is Chief Crown Prosecutor for the North West of England and formerly Director, Communities for the Crown Prosecution Service & Legal Director in CPS London.

During a 22 year career, Nazir has prosecuted some of the most high profile cases in the country and advised on many others. Many of his cases have set precedents for how the criminal law should operate. He initiated ground breaking conferences and seminars that have addressed; Stalking, Crime in sport, Sexual explotation, Airport crimes, ‘Honour’ crimes, forced marriage, anti-social behaviour and gang crime.. The present high profile of these subjects owes a considerable amount to Nazir’s tireless ‘campaigning’ on the issues. He leads nationally on several legal topics. In recent months he decided that 3 householders should not be prosecuted for killing intruders thereby clarifying the law on self defence. He led the criminal justice response to the disorders in Manchester and Salford which brought great reassurance to a frightened public. He successfully prosecuted the man who killed Indian student Anuj Bodve in Salford and the gang that groomed young girls in Rochdale. He advises UK government ministers and trains lawyers and judges from other countries including the US and Canada. He has responsibility for more than 100,000 other prosecutions each year.

On Honour based violence and forced marriage, Nazir is regarded as the foremost internationally renowned expert, regularly presenting to audiences all over the world. He has personally prosecuted more than a dozen so called honour killings including the most high profile. He advises police, ministers and NGOs on all matters pertaining to these issues and has been a key player in development of national strategy to tackle these behaviours.

Nazir is a tutor for several leadership programmes in the public and private sector. He has made presentations to dozens of diverse organisations in this country and abroad. He is on the European Union list of expert speakers. He has given hundreds of interviews in all forms of media. He is also legal adviser to the successful ITV series “Law and Order UK” and legal advisor to the BBC Eastenders drama series.

In addition to his CPS commitments, Nazir gives a considerable amount of time to charitable work and is trustee of several. He is a Governor of Brunel University and unpaid consultant to voluntary sector organisations working with vulnerable people.

Nazir’s has received many accolades, in 2005, he was awarded an OBE by the Queen for his work with the CPS and involvement with local communities. He has also had the honour of being the only lawyer to ever prosecute a case before the Queen. In 2007, he was awarded the CPS’s Public Servant of the year, named Legal Personality of the Year by the Society of Asian Lawyers, the UK Government’s Justice Award 2007 and awarded the Daily Mirror newspaper “People’s award” voted for by readers. Recently he was awarded the Asian Woman Magazine Excellence Award and the Law Society/Bar Council Mentoring award. Nazir was also selected for the Asian Power 100 along with the Muslim Power 100 list, thereby recognised as one of the 100 most influential leading Muslims and Asians in the UK. He has since been listed in the Pakistan Power100 2012 which regards him as one of the 100 most influential people of Pakistani origin in the world today.

The RRF was created by the region’s Refugee led Community Organisations (RCOs) 11 years ago. Its founding aim was for the region’s community of refugees and asylum seekers to work together to produce and use their Collective Voice, strategically, to influence policy and practice that are the systemic, root causes of the poverty, disadvantage and exclusion they experience in their daily lives. Its mission is to empower the community with the skills, knowledge and confidence to speak up for itself, to be actors in the process promoting integration and social justice – rather than rely on others to speak for us, or about us.

Through the RRF’s support and work, we aim to transform our members lives on two levels: the first is the change we manage to create in policy and services, so that all Refugees and

Asylum seekers have the opportunity to be full, equal and active citizens in the social, economic, political and cultural life of the region; on the second level, by genuinely being actively involved – by being part of the process through which those changes are brought about - our members gain the essential knowledge, skills, networks and confidence to be activists in further and future change.

Over the last year we have supported 53 members of 30 refugee led initiatives from across Tees Valley to:

•Contribute their community’s voice to our Collective work to raise awareness and influence change in policy and the way services are delivered around

health, economic inclusion and safety in the community

•Develop greater knowledge, skills, confidence, networks and partnerships

•Empower them to develop and deliver integration support or enterprise

•Enable their members to access a greater range of services

The Tees Valley Inclusion Project CIC provides a range of programmes which aims to improve the social, economic and well-being of BME Women and the wider communities across Tees Valley.

The aims of the project, specifically developed to meet the needs of local BME community are to work in partnership to address:-

• Employment, Education and Training “Diversity Works Programme”• Reducing health inequalities• Supporting victims of Honour based violence, Forced Marriages and domestic violence

Our approach is to work collaboratively with local partners to provide appropriate interventions and offer the support to women and families. The main programme of work will help to meet the needs of BME women and individuals in the Tees Valley area in areas of social and emotional well-being. Our aim is to provide activities and awareness of good health, equality of opportunity and employment initiatives which promote social inclusion whilst recognising cultural diversity. We can offer organisations a varied programme of work which helps meet their equality objectives and provide much needed support to members of the BME community.

CLEVELAND POLICE IS PROUD TO SUPPORT THE TEES VALLEY BME ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS 2012

There are currently 228 licensed community radio stations providing a new voice for hundreds of local communities across the UK. Fuelled by the hard work and enthusiasm of volunteers, they reflect a diverse mix of cultures and interests and provide a rich mix of mostly locally-produced content. They run on a not-for-profit basis and bring community benefits such as training and community news and discussion.

Currently there are just two community radio station in the Tees Valley region, Community Voice FM (CVFM) radio in Middlesbrough and Radio Hartlepool.

Community Voice FM (CVFM) Radio was launched on the 10th August 2009 with the aim of serving the community of Middlesbrough and the wider Tees Valley region through a diverse range of radio programmes and community projects.

The station is now well known for its diverse range of programmes, broadcasting on 104.5FM in the Middlesbrough area and online via www.cvfm.org.uk website.

Giving Middlesbrough Communities a Voice!

The station caters for diverse range of the communities, having developed programmes which cater for numerous musical tastes, cultures and interests. Asides from serving the niche music tastes, the station

also broadcasts programmes in number of different international languages which caters for Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic and Refugee communities living and working in Middlesbrough.

The radio station aims to bring communities together through music, sports, culture, discussion

and debates by utilising the power of radio, this work is demonstrated by its commitment, support and sponsorship of flagship events in Middlesbrough’s Calendar e.g Middlesbrough Mela, The Intro Festival, Middlesbrough Literary Festival, Volunteer Star Awards and Tees Valley BME Achievement Awards.

The radio station is predominantly operated by an enthusiastic and committed team of v o l u n t e e r s , supported by a small team of paid staff, who coordinate v o l u n t e e r

activity and deliver community focused projects which are designed to meet the aims and core commitments of the station.

Over the past 18 months the radio station has delivered a number of high profile and awarding winning projects, which have

supported over 500 hundred people with IT training, employability, volunteering and capacity building opportunities. CVFM Radio is always looking for people to add to our pool of volunteers so if you can spare a few hours a week to support a local initiative, we would love to hear from you.

Our programme schedule is fairly fluid, which means we can experiment with new music

and programme formats, so if you have a good idea for a new show then please do get in touch with us (full training will be provided). STRONGER COMMUNITIES PARTNERSHIPThis theme seeks to support the building of active and cohesive communities across Redcar & Cleveland where active citizens are able to speak up on their communities’ behalf and where a thriving local third sector has the capability and resources to bring local people together, deliver services themselves, and influence the way public services are delivered, so that they are well-designed, accessible, responsive and effective.

The Partnership is made up of both voluntary and statutory representatives whose primary objectives are :

• To promote Social Inclusion and renewal within the most disadvantaged communities within Redcar and Cleveland. • Encourage active stronger communities to have a much enhanced role in engaging with public services and local issues. • Ensure that all partnerships and thematic groups have considered social inclusion and cohesion in the development of their individual work programmes, and reviewed the outcomes of their initiatives.

The Stronger Communities Partnership is responsible for the following policy areas:• Voluntary Sector Forum oversees the partnership’s work in relation to• Responding to the changing and diverse needs of a vibrant and thriving voluntary sector • Collective voice on local, regional and national issues • Inform infrastructure services which are responsive to the changing and diverse needs of a vibrant voluntary sector • Community capacity building/community development, including learning opportunities for community engagement and community assets

• Community Cohesion Partnership oversees the partnership’s work in relation to: • Practical action to address the four principles of Community Cohesion • Social exclusion issues incorporating the seven equality strands • Hate crime reporting • Faith• Financial Inclusion oversees the partnership’s work in relation to:- • Development and Implementation of Financial Inclusion Strategy • Formation of a Financial Inclusion Forum• Compact Implementation Group• An agreement about the way we work together between local public bodies and voluntary organisations and community groups.• The Compact is a way of working that respects, values and recognizes each other’s contribution.

The Middlesbrough BME Network is a registered Social Enterprise, a not-for-profit Strategic Infrastructure Organisation, with over 75 Black, Minority Ethnic (BME) and Refugee led organisations as members of BME Community Forum.

The BME Network provides Information, Advice and Guidance to BME led civil society organisations, Community groups and residents based in Middlesbrough, whilst working closely with the wider community, Local Authority and other Government Agencies and Institutions .

Our organisation works at various levels with public service providers, to advise, guide and support them, often acting as a critical friend to ensure that their services are meeting the needs of Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Communities living in Middlesbrough and the wider Tees Valley region.
