A funny old year was 2006. On thepositive side, it continued the ‘action-packed’ trends of recent years withticket sales up, a host of major artisttours, an increase in the number ofsummer festivals and a general senseof well-being across the industry as awhole. I even allowed myself the rareluxury of a holiday and was verypleased (and relieved!) to welcomeRachel Esson on board as AssistantEditor.

On the down side, Syd Barrett,James Brown, ‘Fluff’ Freeman, GenePitney, Wilson Pickett and DesmondDekker left us to join Elvis’s celestialcabaret, while the demise of industrygreats Tony Gottelier, Christopher Bock,Richard Floyd and Guido Noselli cast ashadow of sadness for those fortunateto have worked with them.

Some of us were also forced todevote much time to the hot subject ofOfcom’s auctioning of the UK’s radio spectrum.Visiting the Houses of Parliament with a smallgroup of like-minded ‘activists’ was notsomething I expected to be doing this time lastyear.

Over the next year, we’ll be warming up tothe 10th anniversary of Total ProductionInternational with a number of exciting newinitiatives and enhancements to the magazine,as well as keeping our eyes on the year’s bigevents... as ever.

Tonight we are once again in the experthands of production manager Steve Allen andhis co-ordinating sidekick Julie Chennells, notto mention our talented and loyal cast of TPiAwards production veterans, without whom ourevent would be a humble tea party.

We all realise that you are arguably themost difficult audience in the world to please— being the people who put on live events allyear round and have seen and done it all —

and so the challenge is always a nerve-wracking one!

This event is, of course, all aboutcelebrating the achievements and contributionsof production crew personnel and companiesall over the world, and the importance of theirwork becomes more crucial with every passingyear, as audience expectations grow... alongwith ticket prices.

There will be lots of people who leavehere tonight without an award, but theircontributions to this wonderful industry are noless vital. So let’s not think of tonight ascompetitive, but more a celebration of ourunique and gifted community.

Thank you for joining us and making ournight a special one.

PROGRAMME

TPiAwards07Brochure.qxd 24/1/07 11:28 Page 3

Page 4: TPi AWARDS 2007 Brochure

06tpi07awards

There are several ways to judge thesuccess of a trade association, one of whichis growth in membership, another is growthin activity. The last 12 months saw the PSAachieve rather good results in both of theseareas.

A steady rise in membership wasboosted by our partnership with the NUSwhich has brought every one of theiraffiliated Student Unions on board as anassociate member. Student Unions are abreeding ground for the next generation ofproduction managers, event organisers andagents — you get the picture — so havingthem on board means that our commitmentto professional development and higherstandards is embraced by the future of yourindustry.

It’s easy to put a figure on membershipincreases; you just look at the revenue —up by 38%. It’s not so easy to quantify anincrease in activity but believe you me, itcertainly feels like more than 38%!

To some, it may seem that many of theprojects we get involved with take an

awfully long time to deliver results. It’s true, some of them do and it’s seriouslyfrustrating at times. Take the Noise at Workregulations; we’ve been working with theHSE on industry-specific guidance for overtwo years now and, boy, do the wheelsturn slowly. The work is almost completeand the guidance will be out for openconsultation this month and ready forpublication six months before theregulations come into force for our industrynext year.

Our involvement means that it will bemore relevant to our sector making it easierfor us to comply with their interpretation ofthe rules.

We’ve been busy working behind thescenes in the field of education. Our helpand support assisted Newcastle College intheir development of a Foundation Degreein Technical Live Event Production. Thecourse was written with close consultationwith employers, resulting in content that isbased on practical experience as well asclassroom learning.

If you’ve been to Newcastle Arena in thepast six months, you’ve probably beenworking with students from that very course.

Still in the field of education, our industryis about to embark on the development of aNational Skills Academy for Live Music withGovernment backing of around £7 million,we’ll be taking a giant leap towards acomprehensive educational programme forour sector, from late school years to on thejob assessment-based qualifications.

The Safety Passport is now up andrunning. We spent 2006 redeveloping, piloting and fine tuning the course intosomething that is now widely accepted asan industry standard and has been adoptedby a growing bunch of companies.

We’re still working on insurers too; manycompanies have seen premiums drop, partlydue to our involvement with insurers,

A WORD FROM THE PSA

TPiAwards07Brochure.qxd 24/1/07 11:28 Page 4

Page 5: TPi AWARDS 2007 Brochure

convincing them thatthere really is adifference betweenPSA members and non-members.

It’s the differencebetween members andnon-members that we’llbe focusing on, too. We’re stepping up our efforts to market ourmembers as first choice when it comes toevent production; the addition of asearchable database of members on ourweb site will make finding membercompanies easier. If you’re not in, you won’tbe listed, it’s as simple as that.

Late 2006 saw a flurry of activitypreceding Ofcom’s much-feared DigitalDividend Review. The re-allocation of theanalogue TV frequency spectrum threatenedour use of wireless microphones andpersonal monitoring systems. Our work withother user groups ensured that our needs

were considered, resulting in a proposalthat gives scope for a solution that suits allparties.

Without representative voices for thesectors concerned, we could have lost avital part of our production armoury. We areyour representative voice and we need yoursupport to continue our work — vital workon vital issues that are too numerous for thisspace.

Here’s to an even more successful 2007.

TOUR MANAGER OF THE YEARco-sponsored by &

A veritable god among British tourmanagers, Andy Franks (a.k.a.The Man In Black) has workedwith some of the most demandingacts in the business and stillretains a unique knowing grin thatcan only be fashioned as theresult of witnessing (andsometimes partaking of) heroicacts of on-the-road excess.

Previously Wob Roberts’partner-in-crime with artists suchas Robbie ‘Rudebox’ Williams,Andy has more recently extendedthe Fransksy VibeTM to a young, upcoming band by the name ofColdplay. You might have heardof them.

Production manager MarkWard describes Andy as “themighty tour manager largelyresponsible for keeping theentourage relaxed”.

‘Franksy’, who has also beenworking recently with the ScissorSisters, Interpol, Rilo Kiley andThe Elected, was presented withthis very same award back in2004... that kind of suggests thathe’s pretty good, don’t youagree?

GARY BRADSHAW

FRONT OF HOUSE ENGINEEROF THE YEARsponsored by

After leaving Cardiff University in 1975 with BSc degree in Geology ("a good idea at thetime"), Gary and brother Alan formed their own band and sold out every venue in Weybridgebefore retiring and living off the proceeds of hiring out their PA system. Eventually theBradshaws sold the PA to John Henry's and went freelance as engineers.

Gary's first major client was XTC, whose tour manager hooked him up with the Eurythmics, leading to three long tours with Dave & Annie and a stint as a studio engineer at their ChurchStudios when off the road. Other great artists Gary has toured with have included SimpleMinds, Simply Red, Depeche Mode, Tears For Fears, Roger Waters, Diana Ross and the soloAnnie Lennox... not forgetting Bobby Davro, Bill Oddie and Dennis Waterman!

Last year was full on, with Gary returning to the FOH position for Take That, touring withSimply Red in the summer and then going straight out on George Michael's 25 Live tour.

CHRIS RUNCIMAN

Although Christopher Runciman’s gravitydefying sideburns appear to have beenimported from the Dickensian era, one canbe assured that the rest of him is muchmore up to date.

His music business experience stretchesback to the ‘60s when, as a teenagepromoter, he booked Paul Simon for £25.He later became a member of the PrincipalEdwards Magic Theatre entourage whowere the first act signed to John Peel’slegendary Dandelion label.

Chris is still in great demand as a tourand production manager with James Taylor,Jackson Browne, J.J. Cale, Emmylou Harris,Steve Earle, John Lee Hooker and NanciGriffitths being just a few names to havebenefited from his acute touring commonsense.

Along with former road pal Peter Filleulof the Climax Blues Band, Chris has playeda key role in re-establishing music on theisland of Montserrat, as the technical guruof the new Montserrat Cultural Centre andassociated events including the ManyHappy Returns concerts of 1998 and ‘99.

“Cirque du Soleil began with a very simple dream,” says Guy Laliberté, who foundedthe company in Quebec in 1984 — a company that has constantly pushed theboundaries and expectations of live entertainment with a stream of staggeringly highproduction value shows, combining circus skills with dance choreography, music andcreative set design. While residential and touring shows such as Mystère, Alegría,KÀ, Quidam, Saltimbanco, O, Zumanity and Dralion set new standards, it is arguablythe Cirque’s collaboration with The Beatles and Apple Corps on the Las Vegasresident show, LOVE, that has brought the company’s incredible skills to a moremainstream audience. The emotional combination of specially ‘reconstituted’ Beatlesclassics with unparalleled Cirque performance art has placed this production in aleague of its own.Mark Cunningham, Editor, Total Production International
