Tonight, Total Production really does come ofage. As we celebrate the 10th anniversary ofthe magazine, we also enjoy another TPiAwards event (our seventh to date), but thistime in the rather more plush environment ofGrosvenor House in London’s Park Lane. It allfeels very grown up... just like the liveproduction industry itself whose players arefully deserving of a somewhat ‘upgraded’ nightout!

The growth of both the magazine and theAwards over the years has happened inparallel to the widespread blossoming of livemusic, which now eclipses the recordbusiness... and then some.

Most of the people present at theGrosvenor tonight will have played a vital partin creating live experiences for increasinglydemanding audiences, and alucky few will walk away withan affirmation of theircontribution.

This year, it’s all changefor the TPi Awards. Notonly do we have a newvenue (and a new-styleaward trophy) but we’realso blessed with JamesCobb who debuts withour team as productionmanager.

James is presidingover a two-part event— our 26 categorieshave been separatedinto 11 company awards presented atthe PSA Conference Lunch, and the remaining 15(mostly personal ones) during the evening, leavingmore time for the all-important socialising!

It doesn’t seem like 10 years since Andy Lenthalland I brought out the debut issue of TotalProduction magazine (above). But 10 years can fly

by pretty quickly when you’re profilingthe greatest events on the planet.

I would like to thank everyonewho has helped us achieve a publicationof which we remain very proud, andalso our crew, suppliers and valuedsponsors who have made a contributionto what we hope will be yet another

memorable TPi Awards.

It’s heartening to know that, when a fairly majorshow or event takes place, the majority of suppliersare PSA members and, when the credits roll, thereare names that are recognisable from the list ofindividual members.

Glancing through the TPi Company Awardnominees and winners is a fairly positive experience— again with plenty of PSA members there. It’s notso when looking through the individuals; those thatare at the top of their game, the key people, thefaces.

Don’t get me wrong, we have a strong andgrowing individual membership but it seems thatthose big names, with some notable and muchappreciated exceptions, haven’t yet grasped theidea of supporting the organisation that is best placeto support the industry from which they derivetheir livings.

Every single non-member winner and nomineewas contacted last year; one responded saying theywere now based in the US “but please keep intouch”.

So, to GCB, Steve Iredale, Philip Winward, JonBray, Steve Jones... thank you for being the typeswho stick a cheque straight in the post every year. And a special tribute to John Roden, a man who‘got it’ and signed up straight away. Irreplaceable.

It’s strange that, when visiting a relatively highprofile North London PA company to get themback on board, the MD, whilst digging through aseemingly endless catalogue of tenuous reasons notto join, stated that he doesn’t think about ‘thesethings’ because he only deals with things thatdirectly affect his business like buying and renting kit.

And who the hell deals with the things thatindirectly affect his business? A trade associationwould do nicely.

It’s a real shame that some want to contributewhile others are quite happy to benefit withoutcontributing. This isn’t exclusive to the PSA; I meetregularly with other trade association types whohave the same gripe. Sure, there are direct benefits

for members that are not enjoyed by non-members but the wider picture reveals work thatbenefits a whole industry, member or non-member.

As well as the financial contribution there arethose that go the extra mile; the people who spendtheir own, unpaid time attending meetings, briefingsand conferences. Special mention is reserved forthe PSA Council; their time and effort is essential toguide the efforts of the PSA — it would existwithout me, it wouldn’t without them.

Sincere thanks to all those that enable me tohave a richly diverse (being in two places at once),stimulating (moments of blind panic) and rewarding(still have time to do a paper round before work)job. For the rest, come on, it’s not like you’re goingto leave the industry and get a proper job.

A quietly-spoken former musician,Mike Darling “fell into” backline techjobs many moons ago, before theKaiser Chiefs took over his life inAugust 2004.

At first, he considered the movea step down, having becomeaccustomed to production tours atthe Academy circuit level with Lamb.Today, however, the Kaiser Chiefsare one of the UK’s best-selling andmost popular live acts.

In parallel with the band’sgrowth, from Barfly gigs to sell-outshows at Earls Court and theirupcoming stadium headliner atLeeds United’s ground, and hisdevelopment of a solid, enthusiaticcrew (with PM Robin Scott), Mike’stour manager role has grown andexpanded beyond his wildestimagination — and all within justthree and a half years.

BART CLEMENTDutchman Bart Clement’s reputation as one of Europe’s most imaginative, cutting-edge setdesigners receives a mighty boost with this accolade. The originality that defines his stageenvironments was recently typified when he worked for the first time with Belgian superstarsClouseau, for whom he created a giant, 17m high by 30m wide curved wave-like back wall andprojection surface from nearly 400 aluminium cubes covered in white Polystretch fabric.

Last year, Bart also designed a three-section structure for the Holiday On Ice productionElements. Manufactured by LiteStructures, the dominant feature was a central truss spiral, measuring 25m across, 4.5m deep, and more than 150m in overall length.

This followed his work on Marco Borsato’s Symphonia In Rosso spectacular which resided atArnhem’s Gelredome for a record number of sold-out dates. Bart’s ambitious production designincorporated a number of different video surfaces arranged in a strikingly original format. A verticalguitar-shaped screen formed the centrepiece of the stage design.

PETE HOWARD 1942-2007

THE JOHN PEELUNSUNG HERO AWARDAWARDED IN CONSULTATION WITH THE PSA

PRESENTED IN MEMORY OF JOHN PEEL O.B.E.

The much respected Pete Howard — the founder of Skan PA Hire who was also known as ‘DefPete’ or ‘Pete Skan’ — passed away on November 28 2007 after a fight with cancer, aged 65.

Pete had a long and multi-faceted career spanning many different areas of the audio industry, from his origins as a bass player to manufacturing loudspeaker cabinets, but it was the pioneeringspirit behind his work with Skan PA Hire that inspired so many young engineers.

Among them was Wayne Barker of W E Audio, who says: “Pete was always the ultimatepioneer and master of audio in many ways. There are many good people out there who had thePete Skan training and are still at the mixing desk and pushing boxes.”

Chris Fitch, who took over the management of Skan in the ’90s, says: “Pete expected a lotfrom the people who worked with him but this was rewarded with the opportunity to work onsome fantastic shows and to receive training from one of the most experienced people in theindustry. His passing makes the world a poorer place.”

THE EDITOR’S AWARD

“Never have I witnessed such sizzling audience anticipation before a show as the fever thatpreceded the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute at London’s O2 Arena on December 10 2007. As I wrote inmy January issue report, this was the ultimate “I was there” event — one of truly historicproportions that featured a seizmic masterclass performance by the reunited Led Zeppelin.

“As if that wasn’t enough, the night also boasted Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings, Foreigner, PaoloNutini, Paul Rodgers, Percy Sledge, Ben E. King and prog heroes Keith Emerson and Chris Squire, amongst a host of genuine music legends. It was a rare occasion where even the most excessivemedia pre-hype couldn’t prepare the onlooker for the sheer quality of delivery that followed.

“This award goes to Harvey Goldsmith, production managers Jim Baggott, Steve Iredale andTony Panico, and a host of associates, crew and suppliers who played an important part in anunforgettable experience. Thanks to each and every one of you.” — Mark Cunningham

One only needs to spend five minutes on www.stufish.com to appreciate the sheer diversityof his genius and his contribution to the art of live production.

The designer of this year’s Olympics ceremonies in Beijing, Mark would be the first toacknowledge the crucial importance of his London-based studio team and associate designers atStufish in all of this, and, being of a modest disposition, it is inevitable that he will accept this awardas much for them as for himself.
