The WISEAwardsEach year, the WISE Awardsrecognize six successfulinnovative projects that areaddressing global educationalchallenges.
WISE brings to light these educational models for
their positive contribution within a community or
society and their potential for scalability. Year by
year, WISE is building a community of educational
innovators which offers a fertile environment for
groundbreaking collaborations.
There is a need to highlight best practices be-
cause they can inspire other projects and be
of use to practitioners and learners around the
world. I encourage people engaged in innovative
projects to share models that have had a signifi-cant impact in improving peoples lives.

Innovations can be of many kinds depending on the context. WISE seeks to highlight todays most innovative
solutions and approaches to educational challenges confronting the world at large.
Project representatives from any region, educational sector or level may submit applications which demonstrate
the quality and impact of their activities in accordance with the criteria. Whether you are involved in a project
that provides access to quality education, creates new opportunities for lifelong learning or develops innovative
educational technologies and approaches, WISE invites you to apply for the 2014 Awards.

All eligible applications, presented in English on the official application form, will be evaluated in accordance with
the regulations. A Pre-Jury will select 15 Finalists and the Jury will make the final selection of six winning projects.

Solving the social issue of historical Amazigh under-
performance in primary education by bringing their
native language into the classroom (Reach: Morocco)
Medersat.com is a rural program for Amazigh children thatconstructs and operates pre-schools and primary schools
with an Amazigh-language curriculum. The project seeks toease the transition from pre-primary to primary school andhas so far reached out to 15,000 pupils.

Innovative and hands-on education in science, techno-
logy, engineering and mathematics (STEM) for secon-
dary school students (Reach: Saudi Arabia)
iThra Youth Initiative is a youth development project that in-cludes initiatives promoting transition towards a knowledge-based society. The programs conducted under this initiativeinclude science and math camps, workshops, internationalscientific expeditions, a portal hosting the scientific contentand a reading festival targeting public schools in urban andrural areas across Saudi Arabia.
Pathways to Education(Canada),initiated by Pathways to Education Canada
Helping youth in low-income communities to gra-
duate from high school and access post-secondary
education (Reach: Canada)
Pathways to Education Canada aims to help young peopleliving in poverty graduate from high school and access post-secondary education and employment. Thanks to its holis-tic program providing academic, social, professional andfinancial services, the project has experienced tremendousgrowth since its inception, and now operates in 13 commu-nities across Canada, helping over 4,000 students each year.

An in-classroom secondary school teacher program to
improve education achievement and opportunities for
Maori students (Reach: New Zealand)
Te Kotahitanga addresses one of the major challenges facingeducation in New Zealand today, namely the continuingsocial, economic and political disparities between the des-cendents of the Anglo-European peoples and the indigenousMaoris. The project offers an innovative curriculum and pe-dagogy in order to increase involvement, success rates andlife opportunities for young Maoris.

Online learning platform enabling users worldwide to
gain employability skills through free, self-paced mul-
timedia courses (Reach: International)
ALISON is an online learning platform enabling users world-wide to gain employability skills by providing free and self-pacedcourses. It is a free learning website providing over 500 coursesto two million registered learners the world over. ALISON offersan innovative test system where an employer or college canchallenge a graduate at any time to sit a simple online test.
PEAS (UK),initiated by Promoting Equality in AfricanSchools (PEAS)Unlocking the potential of young people by delivering
access to affordable, quality secondary education via local
income-generating activities (Reach: Uganda/Zambia)
PEAS creates high-quality, sustainable secondary schools thatcontribute to long-term societal change, poverty reduction andthe empowerment of young people in Uganda and Zambia. Theinnovation lies in its model that allows high-quality education to bedelivered at low cost and in a sustainable fashion.The public-privatepartnership with the Ugandan Ministry of Education helps PEASreceive a capitation grant per pupil to keep fees as low as possible.

2012 Winning Projects
Satya Bharti School Program(India),initiated by Bharti Foundation
Providing quality education for underprivileged child-
ren in rural India (Reach: India)
The project provides high-quality end-to-end education,free of charge, to underprivileged children, particularly girls,in rural India. It has impacted more than 62,000 children,almost half of them girls, and currently reaches over 37,500children in 750 host and neighboring villages, the majority
from minority communities.
Cristo Rey Network Corporate Work StudyProgram (USA),initiated by Cristo Rey NetworkA sustainable revenue model of high school education
for low-income students (Reach: USA)
The project gives low-income students access to the high-qua-lity instruction they need to be college-ready by the end of hig hschool. Students work five days per month in an entry-level
job in a white-collar company and the fee for their work is usedto pay tuition costs. To date, the p roject consists of 25 collegepreparatory high schools across the USA, serving 7,400 stu-dents, and it partners with 1,700 companies.
RoboBraille (Denmark),initiated by Synscenter Refsnaes
Transforming documents into Braille and other for-
mats (Reach: International)
RoboBraille is a free web-based service that converts tex-tual educational materials into formats such as Braille, mp3files, structured audio books, e-books and visual Braillefor the blind and partially sighted, people with dyslexia orpoor reading skills, and the illiterate. RoboBraille currently
serves between 1,000 and 2,000 daily user requests all overthe world in 15 European languages and in Arabic.
Solar-Powered Floating Schools* (Bangladesh),initiated by Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha
Solar-powered floating schools for year-round edu-
cation in flood-prone areas (Reach: Bangladesh)
The project ensures childrens education in Bangladesheven during the height of the monsoon. The boats collectstudents from riverside villages and provide on-boardsmall-group instruction. Each boat school has a classroomfor 30 students, an Internet-linked laptop, a library and elec-tronic resources. To date it benefits over 90,000 families inBangladesh.

lies from the Steung Meanchey landfill district near
Phnom Penh (Reach: Cambodia)
The project changed the lives of more than 1,200 families in theSteung Meanchey landfill district, one of the most impoverishedand environmentally toxic places in the world, in the outskirts ofPhnom Penh, by focusing on education as a primary, basic need. Itprovides access to clean water, food, healthcare and education, andit cares for children and their families in four residential schools, threesatellite schools, a community medical center, a daycare center, anursery, a maternal care program and outreach programs.
PSU Educarchile(Chile),initiated by Fundacin ChileA free interactive online pre-college in Chile(Reach: Chile)
PSU Educarchile is the first free, interactive, online college pro-gram in Chile preparing young people to take the obligatory Uni-versity Admission Test. Every year PSU Educarchile reaches 1.2million students many of them from low-income backgroundsand remote areas through websites and mobile phones. Theproject is supported by national and regional governments, andby the countrys main telephone companies and communica-tions media.
BBC Janala (UK),initiated by BBC World Service Trust
Providing English language lessons throughmobile devices (Reach: Bangladesh)
BBC Janala enables people to learn English in a simple andaffordable way using multimedia devices. At a negligiblecost, BBC Janala provides audio lessons to 26.3 million indi-viduals in Bangladesh who want to improve their Englishlanguage skills and improve their job prospects.
Creative Partnerships(UK),initiated by Creativity, Culture and Education (CCE)Developing the creative skills of young people(Reach: UK, Lithuania, Norway, Germany)
In 2010/11 Creative Partnerships worked in 2,500 schools inEngland to develop creativity in young people through part-nerships between schools and creative professionals. Sinceits launch in 2002 it has benefited 5,200 schools, 150,000teachers and 1.7 million children and young people.
SueaLetras(Chile),initiated by the Center for the Development ofInclusion TechnologiesSupporting literacy learning for children with hearingdisabilities ( Reach: Argentina, Chile, Colombia,Mexico, Uruguay, Costa Rica and Spain)
SueaLetras is an open-source tool that aids literacy learningby using sign language as a bridge. It supports teachers ofstudents with hearing disabilities aged 4 to 12 years. Theprogram has been downloaded more than 24,000 times.
Connexions (USA),initiated by Rice University
Sharing educational materials through an open-source platform (Reach: International)
Connexions allows free and open use of educational ma-terials by a global community of authors, teachers, andstudents. Blocks of information, regularly refreshed, canbe connected in many ways to personalize the learningexperience. Connexions is used by 2 million people in 190
countries each month.
School-Business Partnerships (Morocco),initiated by Al Jisr
Involving the business sector to improve the quality ofeducation (Reach: Morocco)
School-Business Partnerships uses the expertise of thebusiness sector to improve the management and quality ofeducation. School-Business Partnerships benefits 160,000students in 320 schools across Morocco.
Teacher Education in Sub-Saharan Africa(TESSA)(UK),initiated by The Open UniversityImproving teacher education in Sub-Saharan Africa(Reach: International)
TESSA is a network of 20 universities and organizationsthat are expanding and improving school-based trainingfor teachers in 12 Sub-Saharan African countries. Contentsare created collaboratively and adapted to countries andcultures. TESSA supports 400,000 teachers with multilingualresources.

The Citizens Foundation(Pakistan),initiated by The Citizens Foundation
Building and managing schools in poor rural andurban areas (Reach: Pakistan)
The Citizens Foundation gives the least privileged access toeducation by awarding scholarships and building schools inpoor rural and urban areas in Pakistan. Over 115,000 childrenare being educated in a network of 830 schools across 93towns and cities.
The Smallholder Farmers Rural Radio (Nigeria),initiated by The Smallholders Foundation
Improving agricultural management through educa-tional radio broadcasts (Reach: Nigeria)
The Smallholder Farmers Rural Radio in Imo State, Nigeria,provides information and advice in the local language onagricultural and environmental management, and marketaccess. The radio station has 250,000 listeners.
Next Einstein Initiative(South Africa),initiated by the African Institute for MathematicalSciences (AIMS)
Training talented students from across Africa insciences through international partnerships (Reach:African continent)
AIMS prepares Africas top math and science graduates forcareers in research, industry and government. The projectcurrently gives full scholarships to 100 high-potential stu-dents in South Africa, Senegal and Ghana. It has trained 442students from 35 countries, one third of whom are women.
Mother Child Education Program (MOCEP) (Turkey),initiated by ACEV Mother Child EducationFoundationTraining mothers as first educators(Reach: International)
MOCEP supports the education of preschool children in under-
resourced communities by training the mother in her roleas a first educator through group discussions. Programshave been replicated in 13 countries, reaching over 700,000
individuals and training over 8,500 teachers and volunteers.
MIT OpenCourseWare(USA),initiated by the Massachusetts Institute ofTechnology (MIT)Providing educational content through the onlinesharing of MIT courses (Reach: International)
MIT OpenCourseWare is a web-based platform that makesavailable core educational teaching materials from a majorityof MIT courses for free. It has shared over 2,150 courses and18,000 lectures across 33 academic disciplines, reachingover 150 million individuals in more than 220 countries andterritories worldwide.
Rewrite the Future(UK),initiated by Save the Children International
Improving the provision of education for childrenin conflict-affected and fragile states (Reach: Inter-national)
Rewrite the Future has changed childrens lives througheducation in 20 conflict-affected countries. The programhas helped 1.6 million children get back into school, and
secured a better education for more than 10 million children.
The campaign has now been fully integrated into Save theChildrens activities.

Nanhi Kali(India),initiated by Mahindra Trust
Supporting the primary education of underprivilegedgirls in India (Reach: India)
Nanhi Kali supports young girls in poor urban and remoterural areas of India who are at risk of dropping out of schooland ensures that they have 10 years of continuous education.Implemented through a network of 23 NGOs across sevenstates, the project provides material and academic supportto over 76,000 girls.
Curriki(USA),initiated by CurrikiConnecting the global learning community in orderto share educational content (Reach: International)
Curriki is a web 2.0 platform that allows educators to publishlesson plans, textbooks and courses, and to connect withother educators worldwide. The platform has reached over8 million educators and over 30 million students around theworld.
The Self-Sufficient School(Paraguay),initiated by Fundacin Paraguaya
Providing education direct to chronically pooryoung people (Reach: International)
The Self-Sufficient School provides free education and trainingto the poor while producing and trading goods. Students runon-campus rural enterprises whose income fully pays for theireducation. The model has been replicated by more than 50organizations in 27 countries.
Escuela Nueva(Colombia),initiated by Fundacin Escuela Nueva
Improving basic education in low-income schools(Reach: International)
The Escuela Nueva education model places pupils at theheart of the learning process by allowing them to interactwith each other and with the teacher, and to learn throughdiscussion and experience. The teacher becomes a facilita-tor and guide to the learning process. The model has beenadopted in 17 countries, reaching over 5 million children.
Distance Learning in the Amazon Forest(Brazil),initiated by The Amazonas State Secretariat ofEducation
Connecting remote communities through the livetransmission of classes (Reach: Brazil)
Programs enable live, interactive, real-time and on-demandaudio, video and data connections between students andteachers via Internet and satellite technology. Education iscurrently provided to 35,000 students.
Widows Alliance Network - WANE (Ghana),initiated by Mama Zimbi Foundation
Empowering widows through lifelong learning(Reach: Ghana)
WANE empowers widows economically and socially byequipping them with business skills. The project offers itsservices through a network of 300 widows clubs and socie-ties which provide vocational, business and entrepreneurialtraining to over 6,000 widows in Ghana.

About the WorldInnovation Summitfor EducationWISE was launched by Qatar Foundation in 2009 under the
patronage of its Chairperson, Her Highness Sheikha Moza
bint Nasser. WISE is an international, multi-sectoral platform
for creative thinking, debate and purposeful action. WISE
is a global reference for new approaches to education.
Through our ongoing programs and our flagship annual
Summit, we are promoting innovation and building the
future of education through collaboration.
Education, from policy-making to the classroom, often lacks
the impetus for constant innovation active in other sectors.
Todays learning systems have difficulty coping with the
global challenges of poverty, conflict, unemployment, ine-
quality, environmental sustainability and others. WISE is a
response to the need to revitalize education and a global
platform for the development of new solutions.
At WISE, we believe that the positive contribution of
education can be enhanced through innovation in three
priority areas: access to quality education for all, learning
for life, and making education available anytime, anywhere.

Other WISE Programs
The WISE Summit
The annual three-day event in Doha, Qatar, is the leading interna-
tional forum for innovation in education, bringing together over
1,000 practitioners, decision makers and thought leaders from
multiple sectors and more than 100 countries. The 2014 WISE
Summit will take place November 4-6.
The WISE Prize for Education, the first major global prize of its
kind, recognizes an individual or a team for an outstanding,
world-class contribution to the field. The first two WISE Prizeshave been awarded to Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, Founder and Chair-
man of BRAC, and Dr. Madhav Chavan, Co-Founder and CEO of
Pratham.
The WISE Books support, spread and inspire innovative thin-
king and sound practices in education. The upcoming WISE
Book Learning {RE}imagined - How the connected society is
transforming learning focuses on the link between technology
and learning.
WISE Learners Voicebrings the all-important views of students
to the task of rethinking education. A selected group of young
learners plays an active role in the Summit and is involved in
WISE activities throughout the year.
The WISE collaborative web platformis an interactive knowledge
base that offers a wide range of tools to people working in edu-
cation-related sectors. It includes a social networking feature thatenables the WISE Community to connect and share knowledge
and best practices.
Learning Worldis a weekly TV magazine program on education
developed in partnership with Euronews. It broadcasts 16 times a
week to 155 countries in 11 languages.
The WISE Haiti Task Force brings together innovators and
successful projects that are contributing to rebuilding Haitis
educational system which was devastated in the earthquake of
January 2010.
