Towanda Area School District The Towanda Area School District and the Bradford County YMCA work collaboratively and partner projects in our community that focus on athletic and recreational programs as well as ventures that promote wellness and safety for children and youth. Some examples of joint endeavors include active participation on the community wellness council, the First Friday monthly health and recreational event for elementary students and the monthly ‘walk to school’ activity from the YMCA building to the Towanda Area School District school campus. Additionally, the YMCA assumed responsibility for the community swimming program and recently agreed to transition the 5th and 6th grade basketball program to a community base also. We look forward to continuing the productive

community.

quality of life in the great City of Williamsport. It offers programs to people of all background, ability,

offer recreational programs, safe city pools, and a summer nutrition program that children in the city can embrace. We are fortunate that the YMCA is located in our city. I congratulate the YMCA’s staff, members, and volunteers on over 145 years of service to our community.

After speaking with the Y a few years ago, the

having a community recreation center could provide more services to the community if we collaborated with the River Valley Regional YMCA. Now, with the addition of the Richmond and Covington Townships as partners, that dream has certainly come true – much more so through the collaboration with the Y than if we had attempted it by ourselves. I hear from people almost daily that the new Tioga County Branch YMCA is GREAT! It has only been open six months, but it is already making a big difference to the residents of our community. On behalf of all the partners, we are so very appreciative of the YMCA’s efforts to ensure that everyone in northeast Pennsylvania has the opportunity to be a part of such a wonderful organization.

The River Valley Regional YMCA was formed in 2006, after several local Ys came together. The branches of the association are: Williamsport, Bradford County, Eastern Lycoming, Jersey Shore, and Tioga County. Banding together has given us additional strength,

YMCA MISSION: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build a healthy Spirit, Mind and Body for all.

Dear Friends,

Strengthening community is our cause.

At the River Valley Regional YMCA, we have had a remarkable year of delivering extraordinary experiences and impacting lives. People of all ages and walks of life are making connections at our Ys, improving their health, growing as individuals, and volunteering to help their community.

In 2010, we continued our long tradition of being both a catalyst and a conduit to positively impact our community in the areas of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

This year, our Y…

Through funding by the Lycoming County United Way, provided teen, senior and child care programs designed to give teens the building blocks needed for future success, seniors the support to remain active and independent, and child care to low in-come families.

Collaborated with local municipalities, to offer a Summer Nutrition Program, serving over 10,000 nutritious meals and snacks to impoverished youth. Through these collaborations, we were also able to offer four outdoor summer day camp locations to over 1,200 kids each day in the summer throughout NEPA.

Worked with STEP to provide state-subsidized preschool and school-age child care for over 400 children each day. While on the waiting list to receive STEP funding, the Y granted over $300,000 worth of aid to working parents that would not have otherwise not been able to afford the Y-child care. The River Valley Regional YMCA is the largest provider of licensed, curriculum-based child care in NEPA.

7,000 people that were members of the YMCA. The Y remains a champion of community health, providing ample and varied opportunities to get and stay healthy.

Through a grant from the First Community Foundation of Pennsylvania, explored funding opportunities to create a new facility which will serve the Williamsport community.

Partnered with the school districts in the area to provide before and after-school services to families with working parents. For those schools that cannot host the program, children are bused to the nearest branch. Over 2,500 children attended the Y’s latch-key programs last year.

Started a new collaboration with the Borough of

new Y location to serve children and families in Tioga County. Tioga County has never had a Y.

We thank you, our donors and volunteers, for joining with us to make a difference in our community. Your time, talent and resources have enabled us to welcome everyone and empower people to be healthy,

have led with wisdom and compassion; our partners have worked tirelessly beside us, and our amazing staff has consistently exceeded expectations. We are deeply grateful to you all.

We invite you to join us in celebrating the highlights on the following pages which give evidence to how we are strengthening our community!

YOUTH DEVELOPMENTNurturing the potential of every child

We believe that kids deserve opportunities to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Through the Y, our area’s youth are cultivating values, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health and educational achievement. There is an old Y saying, “It is better to build a strong boy today, then to mend a broken man tomorrow.”

2010 HIGHLIGHTS:

We offered opportunities for kids to start a lifetime of healthy activities, through youth sports, swimming lessons, and over 100 other activities to 3,500+ youth. The Y offers a multitude of activities, from youth basketball to cheerleading, and everything in between. There is something for every kid at the YMCA.

We empowered children to make friends, gain , and create memories to

last a lifetime, through our summer day camp programs for over 2,000 kids last summer. All of our major camp sites held in park settings in the out-of-doors, in order to get kids fresh air and away from the TV.

We prepared children for future success - academically and socially - to enter kindergarten. Our before and after-school programs offer academic tutoring as well as teaching the Y’s four core values of Respect, Responsibility, Caring and Honesty. We are the largest provider of licensed, curriculum-based child care in NE Pennsylvania, with over 1,200 children attending daily. We inspired and empowered teens with leadership skills, values and healthy living habits. These teen programs are offered to local kids free of charge.

HEALTHY LIVINGImproving our community’s health and well-being

With an emphasis on balance, the Y brings individuals together, encourages good health and

and shared interests. As a result, youth, adults and families are receiving the support, guidance and resources needed to achieve greater health and well-being for their Spirit, Mind and Body.

2010 HIGHLIGHTS:

We motivated and supported healthier lifestyles

training, etc. The Y is not only a resource for those that

helping “health seekers” who need the Y’s expertise to help them make behavioral changes needed to start a healthy lifestyle.

We empowered hundreds of seniors to stay physically and socially active through both land and water-based programs. The Y is proud of our collaborative efforts with the senior community to help keep our senior population healthy, socially engaged, and independent.

We strengthened positive family relationships through family fun nights, family programs, and parent-child programs. With the onset of the “internet generation,” the Y’s efforts to maintain face-to-face activities for whole family is making a positive difference in the ability of family members to connect to one another.
