Dear Friends,

What’s your Y story? That is often a question someone asks as they begin discussing the variety of experiences a person can have at the YMCA. When someone joins the YMCA of Greater Richmond, he or she may come with the expectation of a specific experience, but a pleasant surprise may await when a new experience surpasses that expectation.

At the conclusion of our 2008 Annual Report letter, we looked forward to 2009 and stated, “…our strong mission, commitment to quality program delivery and fiscally conservative management will ensure that we continue to build a strong spirit, mind and body for all!” We did it!

Beginning with our commitment to fiscal responsibility and professional management, the YMCA of Greater Richmond ensured that after 155 years of serving the Greater Richmond community our programs and services would remain open to all. Last year, we provided $6,303,038 in financial assistance to families and individuals. This created memberships that paved the way to healthy lifestyles, opportunities for students to take swimming lessons or attend a safe after-school program, and facilities where members of the community build relationships. While the economic climate for corporations, foundations and donors across our region remained uncertain, we received $5,700,320 in contributions. This has supported the delivery of our mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

We recognized that we could not continue to provide quality programs without growing and expanding, and started with two of our existing 15 branch locations. The expansion of our Midlothian Family YMCA nearly doubled its size with the inclusion of a new gymnasium. And, in October, we broke ground at the Patrick Henry Family YMCA to consolidate its operations into one location. After 15 years of service in Hanover County, community leaders determined the time was now to grow and expand the aquatic facility to accommodate all the YMCA programs already offered and broaden the Y’s reach. Both capital projects will provide intergenerational space for seniors and youth; child care classrooms that embrace our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility; and new group exercise rooms and wellness space. This will increase the versatility of programs offered to meet the diverse needs of our members.

All that we accomplished this year lead to 154,948 individual YMCA experiences throughout Greater Richmond. Read further in our 2009 Annual Report and “Experience the YMCA” – you’ll meet some of the remarkable individuals whose lives were enriched last year through the YMCA of Greater Richmond.

In August 2009, while working full time at the Virginia General Assembly, Gwen Foley taught 19 high-impact group exercise classes at the Patrick Henry Family YMCA – a personal record. She did this despite undergoing radiation treatments every weekday at VCU Medical Center.

“There were some days when I didn’t think I could do it,” says Gwen. “But after the class was over, I felt so much better.” Gwen has always loved exercise. Her doctors consider her physical health a large factor in her ability to endure the surgery, chemotherapy and radiation required to fight her extremely aggressive form of breast cancer.

“There’s no doubt in my mind that the exercise and support I got at the Y helped me through it all,” says Gwen, now through with her treatments. “I love every class I teach because I know I’m helping others stay healthy. I love working with new people and encourage anyone, no matter their perceived limitations, to come and take those first steps.”

YMCA staff are frequently recognized for their commitment to members. in 2009, 2,583 staff helped others build healthy spirit, mind and body.

the YMCA of Greater richmond engaged 6,939 volunteers as program leaders, fundraisers and policy makers who ensured fiscal responsibility during the Great recession so that the delivery of our mission was uncompromised.

After 15 years serving students, families and active adults in Hanover County, community leaders spearheaded the effort to consolidate and expand the Patrick Henry Family YMCA, to be completed in fall 2010.

Willie Smith knew his life had to change. “I was always a big person and tried many times to lose weight unsuccessfully. I got really committed after learning more about the negative effects of obesity on life expectancy,” says Willie. He joined the Goochland Family YMCA on an affordable Young Adult Membership.

“I talked to their wellness staff and they worked with me to create an exercise plan based on my goals,” says Willie. Originally weighing over 300 pounds, Willie had already dropped over 50 pounds when he decided to join the 2009 YMCA 10k Training Team. He completed his first 10k race that March and lost over 110 pounds total by the end of the year.

Willie is now a very familiar face at the Y. His experience hasn’t only made him healthier, it’s also introduced him to the Y’s programs and mission. “I love mentoring in their after-school program. It’s just a great place to be.”

CorporAte Wellness programs demonstrate success with reduced employee absenteeism and lower health care claims, which result in reduced insurance premiums. fifty-two corporations utilized the YMCA of Greater richmond to meet this need.

In 2009, 154,948 individuals built a strong spirit, mind and body by participating in YMCA programs, embodying our core values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.

How many people choose a hotel based on its proximity to the nearest YMCA? There are quite a few, and Burdi Mahoney is one. Her lifelong involvement with the YMCA as a competitive swimmer began when she was just a teenager in New York State. Her avocation as a swimmer included more than 20 years in US Masters Swimming before pursuing training for open-water events hosted by a Virginia Beach YMCA. Since relocating to Richmond in 1991, this committed swimmer has trained at three different YMCA of Greater Richmond branch locations. At the Manchester Family YMCA, where Burdi now trains, much of her own inspiration has come from those who surround her in the pool. “Fellow YMCA swimmers have always been very encouraging to me. I am constantly amazed by the dedication of those swimmers who overcome physical disabilities to persevere in the pool. The nurturing experiences that I’ve had at the YMCA help me remember to take every opportunity to tell my pool-mates ‘keep up the good work,’” she says. “I realize that the Y itself is a common thread that holds together the pieces of my lifelong fitness fabric. When I enter a YMCA – whether it’s for the 1st time or the 1,000th time – there is a certain familiarity and comfort in knowing that you are welcomed home.”

The YMCA leArn-to-sWiM program provides free swimming instruction to second grade students in the Cities of Richmond and Petrsburg and Henrico, Goochland, Powhatan and Chesterfield Counties. As a result, 2,700 students had a feeling of accomplishment last year.

the YMCA introduced the concept of group swim lessons in 1906. in 2009, the YMCA of Greater richmond taught 68,968 private and group swim lessons as a fundamental element of aquatic safety.

Thirty-five eager students arrived at the Chester Family YMCA in the fall of 2009 to learn about the Leaders’ Club being started at their local YMCA. William Ares, just beginning his seventh grade school year, was one of them. He knew one thing many of the others didn’t – what an amazing experience you can have at the YMCA. William has been around this YMCA since 2005 when his mother enrolled him in summer day camp while she was at work. “I loved it,” William is quick to say when sharing his story. Few of the teens who gathered for that cookout were intimidated by the expectations of being a YMCA Leaders’ Club member. Minimum standards for academic performance, physical fitness expectations and an annual requirement of 100 community-service hours are hallmarks of this program that builds confident students and community leaders for tomorrow. William’s passion for Leaders’ Club is driven in many ways because of the opportunity he has for service. Many of his community-service hours at the YMCA include volunteering as a swim instructor and refereeing soccer or basketball. You may even find him at the front desk of the Y answering phones or giving a tour to prospective members.

“I put Leaders’ Club above everything except school,” William says. “I’m willing to help anybody.”

jack fyockWhen Jack Fyock and his wife moved to Richmond from Massachusetts just over five years ago to enjoy their retirement years, they joined the Chickahominy Family YMCA and found a home.  Jack is the embodiment of an Active Adult. With the branch’s leadership, he and a group of older adults developed the Senior Hot Spot – a gathering place of fun and fellowship for seniors in Eastern Henrico County.  “I’m in the best shape of my adult life!” seventy-five-year-old Jack is quick to say. Jack can often be found in classes such as Body Sculpting, Pilates on a Ball or even Absolutely Abs! His hope is to increase the number of active older members in group exercise classes by becoming a certified group exercise instructor himself.  While sharing his own YMCA experience Jack says, “Being involved at the YMCA will open opportunities for you to be engaged in very satisfying activities whether it’s for your personal, physical or mental health. Belonging at the Y will open new vistas for anyone who is interested.”

Older adults have unique wellness needs that must be addressed to ensure quality of life. The silversneAkers® fitness progrAM provided 2,638 participants in 2009 with an innovative health, exercise and wellness program that helped them live healthy and active lifestyles.

Socialization improves physical and emotional well-being and increases mental alertness. in 2009, 9,216 adults over age 65 remained engaged at the YMCA of Greater richmond.

“They were killed like cows,” Awut Chan said with tears in her eyes. Originally from war-torn Sudan, Awut was tied to a tree and left for dead after witnessing the murder of her parents. She was freed after seven days. Her family suffered constant harassment, midnight raids and beatings. She received asylum in America thanks to the efforts of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. But, her time here has not been easy. She works on the janitorial staff at the Tuckahoe Family YMCA and raises her nine children and two grandchildren alone.

When the Department of Social Services stopped providing funding for child care, Awut was faced with the possibility of losing her house in order to take care of her three youngest children. Knowing the Shady Grove Family YMCA provides on-site child care at her children’s school, Awut’s supervisor, Flossi Beal, worked immediately to enroll them. Thanks to the YMCA’s financial assistance program, Awut can work and her children are safe after school.

“I see God in all people at the YMCA. The YMCA is my family, the people here are my brothers and sisters,” says Awut. Despite all she has been through, she is always happy, and can often be heard singing cultural songs as she cleans the Y’s facilities. “If you trust in God, He provides. God has brought me to the YMCA.”

the YMCA of Greater richmond is one of the largest charitable organizations in the state. Generous people and organizations contributed $5,700,320 to ensure the successful delivery of our mission in 2009.

in the midst of a challenging economic environment, the YMCA ensured membership and programs remained open to all families and individuals by providing $6,303,038 in financial assistance.

Last year, 49,881 individuals received financial assistance, removing a barrier to quality child care, aquatic safety, socialization and healthy lifestyles for many.

parents and grandparents enrolled 3,551 children in our nurturing YMCA Child CAre program that offers homework assistance, crafts, games and friendship at 40 sites in the richmond region.
