YMCA Mission: To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all.

Dear Friends:

Welcome to our Y. Anchored in more than 10,000 neighborhoods across the country, the YMCA has the long standing relationship and physical presence not just to promise, but to deliver, lasting personal and social change. Strengthening the Virginia Peninsulas is our cause and we serve three crucial areas of focus to help individuals, families and communities learn, grow and thrive.

Thanks to the support of community members like you, individuals throughout the Peninsula were able to achieve great things. We are changing lives together and are pleased to share a few of these stories as we celebrate highlights from 2014.

The Y is for Youth Development, because we believe all kids deserve opportunities to discover who they are and what they can achieve. Through the Y in 2014, there were 233,388 service opportunities. Our summer camp program was one of many significant accomplishments of the year. Over 18,603 kids attended camp at 14 different locations throughout the Peninsula service area. Summer learning loss was one of the social issues we addressed this year. With tremendous support from our corporate partners, Y campers read 23,238 books and participated in our first summer STEM fair.

Second Grade Learn to Swim is a signature program funded through community gifts with support from the YMCA endowment fund. In 2014, 721 children were introduced to free swim lessons throughout our service area. Every second grader in Northumberland County was given the opportunity to participate in swim lessons and water safety at the YMCA. In all, over 2,300 children have been served through this program. We still have a long way to go to reach our goal of every child in second grade, over 7,800 children annually. When our endowment reaches $10,000,000, we will be able to serve 7,800 children every year and our community will be a safer place for our children.

The Y is for Healthy Living, improving the nation’s health and well-being. The Y brings families closer together, encourages good health and fosters connections through fitness, sports, fun and shared interests. In 2014, we had 594,400 service opportunities. The Y is uniquely positioned to partner with local hospitals and with support from Y-USA, LIVESTRONG at the YMCA was offered for the first time this year. Newport News and Isle of Wight County served as our launch sites offering 4 sessions serving 48 cancer survivors and patients with a program designed to help navigate services ranging from emotional support to insurance, employment, financial and treatment concerns. This program is provided by the YMCA at no cost to the participant and will be expanded to multiple branches by 2016.

The Y is for Social Responsibility, giving back and providing support to all our neighbors. The Y has been listening and responding to our communities’ most critical needs for 118 years. Whether developing life skills or emotional well-being, welcoming and connecting diverse populations, or advocating for healthier communities, the Y fosters the care and respect all people need and deserve. The Y is for the entire community, and is open to everyone.

In 2014, The Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA launched Togetherhood, a new volunteer program designed to bring communities together and provide service projects for our members and program participants. In November, over 270 volunteers teamed up to make a difference by leading service projects in the Newport News community.

• Thanksgiving: 435 Dinners were served or delivered

Y Volunteers provided and delivered Thanksgiving Meals for the homeless and “alone” at three locations throughout Newport News.

• Heart to Heart: Heart Pillows for Mastectomy Patients

Members created/sewed heart pillows for mastectomy patients

Togetherhood will be expanded into all our locations by 2016.

In all, in 2014 we had 845,473 service opportunities. We are grateful for your commitment to our mission. Working together, we are changing lives and strengthening our community.

In 2013, the Consumer Product Safety Commission reported, “Drowning is the leading cause of unintentional death among children 1 to 4 years of age and it is the second leading cause of death for children from 5 to 14 years old.”

In 2011, the YMCA endowment trustees pledged to offer every second grader in our service area free swim lessons as a community service. Second Grade Learn to Swim is a water safety course offered through the Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA. In 2014, water safety classes took place at nine (9) community pools serving 721 children.

Northumberland County Schools was the first school system to approve allowing every second grader the opportunity to participate. The school system provides transportation to the Y pool and the YMCA staff and volunteers provide free swim lessons and water safety instructions for all.

“There is a generational fear of water in our community, and after just three years of School to Pool we have seen a significant change in confidence for both children and parents. For us at the Northumberland Elementary School, it has become a vital part of our effort and belief in educating the entire child. Quite simply this program is a life saver and a game changer.” —Theresa Larsen, Principal Northumberland Elementary School.

Learning to swim gives children confidence that carries over into other aspects of their lives. It keeps them physically active, and helps them develop life-long healthy habits.

“Why is it we feel so alone when we are diagnosed with cancer? The diagnosis knocked me off my feet in so many ways,” explains Rhonda from Smithfield. “I was scared, angry, determined to get better, and, though nobody did anything to make me feel it, I felt I was a burden. I had to depend on so many people to help me do so many things.”

In 2008, YMCA of the USA partnered with the LIVESTRONG Foundation to help cancer survivors begin the journey toward recovery with the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program. Part of the Y’s commitment to strengthening community through healthy living, the program offers adults affected by cancer a safe and supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. In 2014, the Peninsula YMCA joined the journey and started offering the program in Smithfield and Newport News.

“LIVESTRONG at the YMCA was the answer to so many of my prayers. I was desperate to feel strong again, to feel like myself, have confidence, and take back my life. The first day at LIVESTRONG, we all introduced ourselves and explained our illnesses. Most of us will live in health for years to come, others knew they could not win the war, but they wanted to fight. We fought together trying out exercises and equipment, and sharing highs and lows. As friendships grew, my body grew stronger, and so did my spirit. I no longer felt alone.”

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA focuses on the whole person – not the disease. The free 12-week program meets twice a week for 90 minutes. Traditional exercise methods ease participantsback into fitness. Focus is on building muscle mass and strength, increasing flexibility and endurance, and improving confidence and self-esteem.

To date, 48 individuals have completed LIVESTRONG at the YMCA.

The Peninsula Metropolitan YMCA has been chosen among the first Ys in the country to help launch Togetherhood™, a member-led community service program. Togetherhood™ is the Y’s Signature Program for Social Responsibility and invites Y members to lead and participate in volunteer service projects that benefit the community where they live.

Togetherhood™ is designed to be a simple, fun and rewarding way for members to identify ways they can give back and support their neighbors through their own ideas, skills and energy and the network of the Y. We are inviting members to participate in the Y’s cause to strengthen community; our Newport News branch launched Togetherhood™ this fall.

“I feel so welcomed by the Y today,” whispers a Newport News father, almost as though saying a prayer. “My wife passed away last year, so it’s just me and my son now. I am gaining skills in the kitchen, but I am definitely not ready to tackle a big turkey dinner and, to tell you the truth, I really wanted to be around other people. I asked Ms. Staszewski the other day if we could come to dinner too, and of course she said yes, no hesitation. I know most of the people here are down on their luck in one way or another, so all these people are just like me. They just want some good company, to feel welcome and to break bread together.”

One of the Newport News YMCA’s four Togetherhood™ projects is Thanksgiving dinner. This year they served about 435 people at three different locations — at the Y, Denbigh Community Center, and Mary Immaculate Hospital — and delivered meals to homeless individuals who were afraid to leave their belongings so they could come in for dinner. Leftovers were delivered to a local homeless mission. The other Togetherhood™ projects are volunteering with PORT Homeless Shelter, sewing heart-shaped pillows for mastectomy patients, and cleaning up yards for ten elderly/hospice homes is planned for the spring of 2015.

The Y believes in the power of communities coming together to help each other.

Togetherhood is designed to be run by a Service Committee made up of Y members working as volunteers, and a single Y staff person who acts as an advisor. Together they take on local problems in an organized, rewarding, convenient, and fun way that helps Y members strengthen the community where they live.
