WelcomeI have structured the organisation into 3 main service delivery vehicles: Training and Education, Community Café and Youth and Community Work. This has allowed us to focus our attention on what we do, who we do it with and ultimately why we do it? The results have been fantastic and show that Teesdale YMCA has the correct drive and direction to meet the needs of the community.

Teesdale YMCA’s culture and collaboration keeps people together through an active trust among the team. We have a vibrant team of strong people who are prepared to exercise distributed leadership in interchangeable roles and positions, which is both necessary and important for a progressive multi service organisation.

Our Training and Education has become a flagship model across the federation. The project gained national recognition when it featured in YMCA England’s National Manifesto which was debated in the Houses of Parliament. The impact to the profile of the organisation has been incredible, with many schools and colleges looking to work Teesdale YMCA as a direct result.

Another area of strength for the organisation is our Youth and Community Work, with quality outcomes been met through our Intergenerational Work,

Youth Work, Young Parents Project and Community Programs. We remain the most effective cross age group communicator in the region, building on the relationships with both individuals and related organisations. These relationships are built on trust and a quality of service that Teesdale YMCA delivers.

Cockfield Community Café is a fantastic project which services the community in much more ways than a simple café.: it is a source of information and a place to meet friends, a café that offers entertainment, arts, social activities and on evenings transforms into a youth work centre: we have rapidly become the heartbeat of the community.

As we live through the ongoing economic situation Teesdale YMCA has identified its strategic objectives which will see the organisation progress our services further into the community, create new opportunities and develop more services that will positively impact on the community.

It is our vision to work with, support and develop people and communities across Teesdale.

Kevin Wake CEO, Teesdale YMCA Ltd

2014-15 has been a great year for the organisation. We have yet again blown all expectations out the water, whether we measure them by attendees, projects, outcomes, volunteers, financial statistics or contextual indicators.

Welcome to our Annual Report 2015.Teesdale YMCA has had yet another highly successful year, working to support and inspire young people and communities throughout the area – in town, village and outlying areas.

This Report gives an insight into the activities we are involved in – and into the connections and relationships of trust we continue to nurture and value.

Since the last Annual Report, Trustees have had two reflection and planning events with senior staff, where we have taken ‘time out’ to look at our roots and heritage and how best to plan to continue to deliver our vision and mission in the months and years ahead.

We continue our work in three main areas: Training, Education and apprenticeships, community work (including our community café) and young people’s support and development.

We are fortunate to have a highly dedicated and professional staff team who

From the Chair of Trustees

continue to enable delivery of what we do, ably assisted by committed volunteers.

Trustees, who bring a range of professional skills and experience, continue to provide oversight and governance of TYMCA’s life and work; to them I extend my thanks. We are delighted that we have added two to our number, Alastair White and Annie Clouston.

Thanks are also due to our valued funders and other partners – without whom we could do very little! Your support and belief in our work is highly valued.

Times change, as they say – but everyone at TYMCA will be doing all we can to continue to support young people and communities in this area in the year ahead.

We encourage you to do all you can to support us in that task.

Teesdale YMCA continues to operate from a solid financial position. This is due to our success in securing grants and the generosity of our funders.

The challenge for a small charity is that despite these successes we cannot stand still. Funders legitimately expect to see meaningful and measured outcomes for their money. This remains the charity’s intention and the excellent work described in this report speaks for itself.

Our general reserves are low because as income grows, so does expenditure. Only six years ago our income was less than £100,000 a year. Now it is over £250,000. Expenditure has grown at a slightly higher rate so there is little leeway.

The Board and Executive Committee maintain a close watch on financial performance. Direct costs and overheads are carefully managed.

Income, costs and cash are tracked against the budget. Financial commitments are not made until the income to fund them is secured.

Treasurers Report

We continue to take a low risk approach to investments with any cash held in capital accounts with major banks.

The Board is very grateful to all funders past and present for their support. They can be assured that their generosity is being rewarded with efficient and valuable services that make a real difference to our community.Peter Colley, FCMA, CGMA, Treasurer

Teesdale YMCA has seen a positive expansion to their program of youth development work over the last year, offering positive activities and support to children and young people from as young as 5 weeks old and based over six sites.

Barnard Castle still remains our main hub on week nights, providing young people with a program of positive activities, opportunity for development, support and information. We continue to work with young people predominantly aged 10-17yrs on various projects and activities. Cooking remains the favourite activity, along with arts and crafts and board games.

Children and Young People 14/15Example:

Young People’s Panel (TAP). Teesdale YMCA are working to support TAP’S Small Grant Scheme this year by coordinating the youth panel. We have recruited young people from across Teesdale with an interest in making a difference to their community; they have been trained to understand the process and are supported to make informed decisions about fund allocation. Feedback has been positive and they are now encouraging other young people to apply or be part of the panel – This project hopefully enables young people to have a voice and feel empowered!

Teesdale YMCA continues to have a strong presence in Cockfield and this has been cemented with the establishment of our own weekly youth club in the village. This is enhanced by school holiday activities and support to access additional events across Teesdale. We also continue to support the delivery of youth development work within Evenwood, enhancing partnerships between Teesdale YMCA and Durham County Council Youth Workers.

Over the last year we have also welcomed a new partner, Startforth Morritt Memorial CE Primary School. We now provide a weekly after school club within the school that has proved very popular, delivering a range of arts and craft sessions, this also allows a link and a friendly face once they are old enough to access our program of youth activities.

Additional Support:Teesdale YMCA remain passionate about providing youth focused support services, young people and the community can access or be referred in to:

/ IAG Sessions (Information, Advice and Guidance) this is an integral part of the support we offer young people and the wider community. If offers advice, guidance or even just information covering various topics; such as, Job Search, CV development, volunteering, training and education.

/ Alcohol Project – Teesdale YMCA works closely with Barnard Castle Neighbourhood Police Team (BCNPT) to enhance our support for young people; this project is engrained in our service. We continue to take referrals for individuals that need support.

/ Night Aces – Teesdale YMCA is one of many local organisations that supports Teesdale School’s Extended Services to deliver ‘Night Aces’. This weekly session provides after school activities to young people from Teesdale School in years 7-8.

Teesdale YMCA continue to work in partnership with OnePoint to deliver this project; utilising two venues to reach young parents all across Teesdale. These weekly groups take part in the Outreach Centre in Barnard Castle and on the Playbus in Cockfield to enable increased accessibility; reaching parents from as far as Bowes!

The project successfully delivers support through two strands:- Teesdale YMCA works with parents

to provide support, guidance and opportunities for personal development.

- OnePoint provide early year’s activities and support with child development; as well as parenting support.

Over the last year we have seen an influx in young parents attending the Tuesday Group, this has been welcomed and as a result have witnessed positive friendships,

young people accessing support to meet their needs and also children under 5 being in positive environment with their parents.

Children and Young People 14/15

Young Parent’s – Teesdale

Case Study: Over the last year we have seen two young parents, with support apply for college. Both obtained places on their chosen courses and were supported with their decisions. One young person has chosen to go ahead with this course and starts in September, we have supported her to access childcare and consider her transport options. This is a very positive outcome for the young person, her family and the organisation.

The aim of this project was to provide a program of activities that is accessible for young people and adults that would enhance their physical and emotional wellbeing. There are three elements to this project:

1. Intergen work: Working In partnership with ‘Heart of Teesdale’ we have a timetable of monthly workshops held in ‘The Manor’ in Barnard Castle. Young people are invited to work with residents on a number of activities

that include traditional craft, reminiscing and landscape themed activities. The impact has been tremendous…both young people and residents have given feedback that they sessions make them smile and relationships have formed within the group that enables residents to get the most from the sessions. This project has now developed and will hopefully be starting work in ‘The Charles Dickens Lodge’ in the summer.

Community:Teesdale YMCA has developed our portfolio of community development work over the last year to not only meet the needs of local people but also to enhance opportunities for community cohesion. The Community Café was our platform for community development work and continues to be a safe, welcoming space to come and have some lunch and also access a range of services such as IT equipment, training opportunities, support and information. We achieve this by providing a range of community and young people focused activities on regular basis.

ENRICHING RURAL LIVES:

Page 9: YMCA Teesdale Annual Report 2014-15

ANNUAL REPORT 2014-15 | 9

2. Free Sport Sessions: Every month young people can access two free sports sessions that are held at Teesdale Leisure Centre. They have the choice of Climbing, where they are supported by a professional climbing instructor or football coaching. These sessions are open to all young people in Teesdale and have been greatly received.

3. Community Arts Sessions: This element of the project was introduced due to the success of the ‘Create and Craft’ sessions we held last year. This project allows us to provide a yearlong timetable of monthly art sessions across Teesdale. At £2 a session, they are affordable and gain access to a range of very talented local artists.

TEESDALE TRAINING PROJECTThis TAP funded project has allowed three large organisations to work together to not only impact on the lives of children and young people but increase employability skills of local people. The project has funded the training of 8 local people, at the end of this training they will have achieved a Level 2 qualification in Youth Work. As part of the training they are also required to volunteer at various youth work organisations across Teesdale, enabling them to gain experience and enhance their skills. Teesdale YMCA and TCR HUB are working together to deliver the Level 2 qualification and coordinate volunteer placements, as well as supporting and guiding the new cohort of youth workers to meet the needs of young people.

The second strand of this projects sees the addition of Durham County Council Sport Development Team, the funding enables members of the community that are involved in community sports clubs access to sports qualification that will enhance their delivery and ultimately make their clubs more sustainable. The team can also support you with the development of your club or team.

The past year has been an exciting year for Training and Education with Teesdale YMCA, full of changes, new students, new courses and new staff. The opening of the Training Centre based at TCR Hub has allowed us to expand the training and education services we can offer to the community. The Training Centre is a fully working commercial enterprise producing products for sale, whilst at the same time offering training opportunities. This combination of enterprise and training allows young people to be immersed within a work based environment on a weekly

basis. Our apprentices offer some fantastic peer mentoring and give a clear example of progression from school to the work place.

After much hard work the Training Centre was awarded NCFE Centre status which allowed us to offer nationally accredited courses to people of all ages at Levels 1 and 2. The Training Centre ran courses for students from 3 schools 4 days a week, with students working on Craft and Art & Design courses which offer them an opportunity to gain GCSE equivalents within an enterprise environment.

The hard work of all staff within Training and Education has been recognised in several ways throughout the year. Firstly the provision we provide was graded as OUTSTANDING within recent Ofsted inspections. We were then added to the preferred providers register for Alternative Education providers within County Durham. Finally we were held up as an exemplar model for Training within the YMCA National Manifesto.

In amongst all of the new courses, accreditation and inspections staff and young people

combined to create the Sleigh upon which Santa arrived in style in Barnard Castle. This has to be the most memorable moment from the past 12 months!

All in all this has been an exciting year, full of hard work and challenges, but one in which tremendous progress has been made. I am extremely proud of all staff and young people who have been a part of the Training and Education at Teesdale YMCA this year.

ANNUAL REPORT 2014-15 | 15

The trip/discovery visit has ended and left me with some amazing memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. The YMCA has something about it that gives people the opportunity to learn, develop and truly make a difference no matter where you are in the world.I can only paint a picture through my words of the flavours of things and experiences I had whilst on the trip and even then it won't do it justice...whether it was the people, the places, the buildings, the culture, the communities, the generosity shown or simply the children...it was magical. From day 1 we worked hard, hitting the ground running to visit YMCA projects across the Kerala and Tamil Nadu regions: orphanages, schools, day care centres, self-help groups, river communities, sport and recreation centres, Tsunami relief and rebuilding projects, housing projects and centres to help the children suffering from mental illnesses. Every single project was quite remarkable....I have spent time reflecting on the experience, attempting to come to terms with what I saw, who I met and what I did......I usually have a very pragmatic approach to life and work and part of my character tells me to process the experience into some form of order: perhaps labelling each project, even scoring them in some way to inform myself which fits best with what I was looking for....however on this trip my personal system has been blown out of

Discovery visit indiaWhat a remarkable experience!

the water! Everything touched me and made me think of ways I can improve, both personally and professionally.India to me is a cacophony of noise and an explosion of colour, sometimes feeling like an amazing fire work display just without the wiz bangs! There are tut tuts weaving in and out, cars and motorbikes and buses and wagons flying around, constantly trying to overtake, the tooting and endless need to get wherever you're going quicker than possible or necessary...simply fantastic! There is a freedom of expression in India with the way they live and the work they deliver. I feel it comes from the lack of Big Brother Contracts, the no-need to complete endless forms, the box ticking and the paperwork that is required in the UK in order to prove your worthiness. In India, they simply get the job done. The YMCA supports the most needy, the most malnourished, and the communities that require it most. Their work is done by listening, developing and understanding the issues that are affecting India. With this knowledge they work as one, they all contribute: financially if they can or hands on if that's

what they can offer. It works. The feel good factor of the YMCA's presence across the regions was immense. They respect the organisation, its values and aims and work together to create better communities. My learning from the experience will not end now. I intend to develop further links for Teesdale YMCA, our staff, our communities and our young people. The work we do in the future will be heavily influenced by this experience, and with a clear positive mind, we will continue to grow and make fantastic contributions to the region we work in and the communities we serve. I'd like to make special thanks to Ken Montgomery (Head of International Affairs YMCA England) for making this trip an experience I'll never forget and the colleagues I went with from throughout England for their support, the tolerance shown to each other and laughter we shared. I would also like to thank the staff, board members and volunteers from every Indian YMCA we visited for their hospitality, genuine affection shown to us all and their amazingly inspirational work.
