SUNDAY SCHOOL 9:30 WORSHIP SERVICE 10:30
From the Colemine
Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to
God the Father through him. Colossians 3:17
This seems like a pretty tall order to do everything in the name of the Lord. Maybe on Sunday morning,
maybe for a little while during the week when we pray or read the Bible and have our devotions. Could
this possibly mean all the time every day? There might be some things we do we really don’t think Jesus
really should be involved in. If that is the case should we be involved in it either?
Then there are the mundane things we do, like mowing the lawn, washing dishes, cleaning the house,
washing the car, would Jesus really need to be involved in that activity too? How about the fun stuff we
do, fishing, playing golf, playing cards, dancing, going to sporting events, watching a movie, do we do
those things in the name of the Lord Jesus too? How about at work? Does Jesus want to be involved in
what we do at work too?
We don’t have a problem with having Jesus be involved in the spiritual aspects of our life. I would like
to think Jesus wants to be involved in every aspect of our life even the mundane things and the fun things
and even our work life. He wants to be involved in our life not just on Sunday morning, but every day of
the week in everything we do.
Jesus tells us He is with us wherever we go, so we can let Him have a place in our life in everything we
do.
Pastor Steve

Faith Builders in May and June
The Faith Builders class will be discussing

love during May. We will look at scripture
from Acts, 1st Corinthians, and 3rd John. Sub-
jects include truth, the gifts of the Holy Spirit,
and gifts of languages and love.
In June, we look into the Old Testament and
discuss the prophecies of Amos. We will see
what he says about oppression of the poor,
sexual immorality, luxury, and corruption.
These themes he addressed those many
years ago seem to be with us even today.
Come join us and be part of our fellowship.

Meet Gerald “Jerry” Elliott
Submitted by Jan Hedges
Gerald “Jerry” Eugene Elliott is the youngest of three sons born to Paul and Minnie Bracken Elliott. He was born in Independence, Kansas on July 8, 1929. They like to say, “I was responsible for the crash.” His father, worked for the Sinclair Oil Company and his mother worked in a bookstore during World War II.
Jerry’s oldest brother Paul Otis was killed in World War II. He was an in-structor pilot. His other brother is Rev. Dr. Robert Melvin a retired minister in the Christian Church in Oklahoma. He just turned 91.
Jerry attended grade school, high school and junior college in Independ-ence, KS. He went out for track but had to give that up because he hurt his knee. He was in anything that had to do with music – band, orchestra, choir and drama. He loved music. He was the drum major for the high school and junior college band. Following junior college he went to Phillips University for one year then came back to Pittsburg to Kansas State Teachers College. He graduated in January 1953, and was immediately drafted into the army.
Work for Jerry began with a job at the shoe store in high school and junior college. At Pittsburg, he worked in the Department of Education as a typist. When he joined the army (1953-55), he also worked in an office doing clerical work. He laughs, “I joined the army to see the world and spent most of my time at Fort Riley.”
Marjorie (Marge) Newkirk lived a block away from Jerry growing up in Independence. Like Jerry, Marge loved music and was the head drummer for the drum corp. She went on to become a music teacher.
Jerry and Marge began dating in junior college and were married on July 6, 1952. They had been married for 58 years and a day before Marge died of complications from Parkinson’s. They have three children. Tom is an elementary principal in the Denver area and will retire this year. He and his wife Cathy have two daughters and one granddaughter. Dave is the principal at Eugene Ware Elementary School in Fort Scott. Dave and wife Jan have one son Steve. Daugh-ter Amy is employed by the Federal Government and lives in Denver.
After his time in the army, Marge and Jerry moved to Denver where Jerry taught fourth grade for 35 years. Marge taught music in Jefferson County schools (near Denver). After his retirement, Jerry continued to substitute in Jef-ferson County in library media for fourteen more years. While in Denver, both Jerry and Marge were organists in several different churches. ‘Filling in’ often turned into two or three years at a time.
In 2005, Jerry and Marge moved to Fort Scott to be closer to family. While Jerry loved living in the city, Marge wanted to get back to a smaller town. Their son, David, helped them find a place to live. They started coming to the Methodist church because they appreciated the wonderful music.
Over the years, Jerry has been very involved in Masonic groups, Scottish Rite, and Shrine and served as or-ganist for these groups. In Denver, he was the pianist for a chanters group. He has also been involved with Eastern Star in both Denver and Fort Scott. He served as worthy patron two times in Denver and once in Fort Scott. He is also a member of Kiwanis and plays the piano for them at their weekly meetings.
Music has been a big part of Jerry’s involvement in church. When he was in high school, he was the youngest organist ever in his church in Independence. Since coming to Fort Scott, Jerry has been active as secretary/treasurer for HOCROC and United Methodist Men. He attended M&M Homebuilders Sunday school class until recently.
When asked about a special memory in the church, Jerry thinks of the funeral of his wife Marge. He again speaks of his love of the music and says his favorite hymn is “My Tribute”.
“I’m happy living in Fort Scott and have a number of good friends through church and Kiwanis,” Jerry states. Jerry’s hope for the church and for religion in general is for a ‘resurgence of involvement’. He says, that hope can be expanded to include civic organizations and community involvement as well.

A Prayer for Mom
A young boy had been misbehaving, so his mother sent him to his room. Sometime
later, he came out and told his mom he’d prayed about the matter. “That’s good,”
she replied. “If you ask God for help to not misbehave, he’ll help you.”
“Oh, I didn’t pray for help behaving,” said the boy. “I prayed for God to help you
put up with me.”

What is a Dad?
A dad is someone who wants to
catch you before you fall
but instead picks you up, brushes you off,
and lets you try again.
A dad is someone who holds you when you cry,
scolds you when you break the rules,
shines with pride when you succeed,
and has faith in you even when you fail.
—Unknown
A dad is someone who wants to
keep you from making mistakes
but instead lets you find your own way,
even though his heart breaks in silence when you get hurt.
