TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME
The Lord be with you! Leaving aside contemporary politics, we return to the Baltimore Catechism’s
presentation of Confirmation. Today we are looking at the Gifts of the Holy Spirit and how
Confirmation strengthens them within us.
Question 698. Which are the effects of Confirmation?
Answer. The effects of Confirmation are an increase of sanctifying grace, the strengthening of our
faith, and the gifts of the Holy Ghost.
Question 699. Which are the gifts of the Holy Ghost?
Answer. The gifts of the Holy Ghost are Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge,
Piety, and Fear of the Lord.
Question 700. Why do we receive the gift of Fear of the Lord?
Answer. We receive the gift of Fear of the Lord to fill us with a dread of sin.
Question 701. Why do we receive the gift of Piety?
Answer. We receive the gift of Piety to make us love God as a Father, and obey Him because we
love Him.
Question 702. Why do we receive the gift of Knowledge?
Answer. We receive the gift of Knowledge to enable us to discover the will of God in all things.
Question 703. Why do we receive the gift of Fortitude?
Answer. We receive the gift of Fortitude to strengthen us to do the will of God in all things.
My commentary
As we have mentioned before, there are two major categories of grace: sanctifying and actual.
Whereas sanctifying grace is the habitual indwelling of the Holy Spirit within us, actual grace is a
temporary gift from God for a specific end. The Gifts of the Holy Spirit are actual graces that
enable us to fulfill God’s Law in particularly difficult circumstances. Accordingly, we do not often
utilize the Gifts of the Holy Spirit but rely on them when we encounter a grave difficulty.
The Fear of the Lord and Piety compliment each other by moving us away from severe temptation
and disposing us to love God as our Father. Generally speaking, fear moves us away from that
which consider dangerous and/or harmful. Fear of the Lord is not fear of God as such but fear of
our suffering the consequences of sin, i.e. eternal damnation. We need this Gift when we
encounter particularly strong temptations and need to emotionally detach ourselves from what is
tempting us. Piety, on the other hand, engenders in us a deeper love of God as our Father.
Although we usually speak of piety in reference to prayer, its root meaning is the disposition of a
loving son or daughter. We want to please our parents since we are grateful for all that they have
done for us. Likewise, Piety allows us to love God in a supernatural way that we could not achieve
by our own human powers.
Sometimes we face a moral challenge that we could never have anticipated: Knowledge of God to
our rescue! By inspiring us to see the matter in the way that God does, we have certain knowledge
of what God desires. Whereas Knowledge gives us God’s grand perspective, Counsel (as we will
learn about next week) give us a deeper apprehension of particulars.
Lastly for this week, Fortitude obviously strengthens our will to put into effect what God wants of
us. Also known as Courage, Fortitude as a Gift moves our will away from our selfish desires and
towards the good that God wishes for us to achieve. Throughout our lives we will encounter
circumstances that demand more than we can provide. In such instances Fortitude gives us the
strength to boldly do God’s will.
As will become even more clear next week, the Gifts of the Holy Spirit go together. When we are
gifted Knowledge, we often also receive Fortitude to enable us to do what God wishes. Likewise,
Fear of the Lord might help break us away from a strong temptation so that Piety might then move
us to love God more tenderly. In noting these wondrous gifts, we see that God supports in all the
most difficult times of our lives.
In Christ,
Fr. John
