GOOD NEIA/S

Exodus 3zt7-a\ r3-r4 / :. Timothy t:tz-t7 / Luke r5:r-32

I lost my wedding ring once. For two days I was frantic, practically turning

my whole house upside down. The loss was devastating-the ring

symbolized so much and obviously couldn't be replaced' I couldn't do much

eise during those days but worry-l had trouble working, sleeping, and

focusing. rfufr.n I found the ring safely tucked amid some blankets that had

fallen offtne bed, my joy was nearly indescribable. Palpable relief filled me,

and my world was back on track.

That experience gives me insight into "the joy in heaven" Jesus describes in

today's gospel a1 the repentance of a sinner. Sin causes a rift in our

,ul.tionr-hlp with God-it's a profound loss, like that of a shepherd losing a

sheep or a woman losing a coin or a careless woman losing her wedding ring'

Jesus tells us that God's joy at our repentance is even more profound-it's

worthy of a grand party and celebration. Take my joy atfinding my ring and

multiply it a hundredfold or more-that's the rejoicing in heaven when a

sinner comes home.

Knowing that's how God feels about our repentance should bring us relief

and pealce-and it should also move us to extend mercy to those who have

wronged us. Broken relationships are losses-we may try to pretend they

don,t affect us, but deep down they can still eat away at us, slowly

destroying our sense of peace and well-being. We can continue nurturing

grudges *d .ng"r, or we can grab on to the palpable joy that comes with

Lur.y and healing. Are you missing out on some much-needed ioy? Forgive

someone, and then rejoice. Janel Eske r I sundaybulletin@liguori'org

de ar PAD Rf,

O How is an icon dffierentfrom a regular painting of a saint?

In general usage, the word icon metns any symbol orimage. In the Church, however, it refers to an image thatdepicts Bible stories or holy people. According to theCatechkm of tlrc Catlnlic Church, icons spread the Gospel withimages instead of words (1160). The word iron comes fromthe Greek word eikenai, "to be like." Icons originated withthe Eastern Church. Even though an icon is an image

created with paints, icons are written, not painted. Iconwriting, called iconograpLry, is a vocation as well as a talent.

The difference between a painter and an iconographer is thaticonographers follow strict rules and standards set forth inEastern Church canon law and Christian tradition. Rootedin God's Word, icons are rich in symbolism. The colors,

gestures, and shapes speak spiritually to invite us to pray and

worship. Icons can be written on almost any suface, buthistorically most were written on wood and had a gold-leafbackground. One example of this type of icon is Our Ladyof Perpetual Help, which is believed to have been written inthe thirteenth century and was given to the Redemptoristorder in 1865 by Pope Pius D( who told them to "make herloeown throughout the world." It currently hangs in theChurch of Sant'Alfonso in Rome.

To see the original icon in real time, go to omphicon.org.
