In our last edition we asked you to tell us how you Pay-it-Forward to help others in need. We found three kids that are doing so much that we had to feature them. Here is their story:
Dear Kirby Kangaroo,
My sisters and I found some extra purses and
backpacks when we cleaned out our toy box. Mom
said we could fill them with things and donate them.
We filled the purses with makeup, lotion, hat and
gloves, gum, and other things. In the backpacks, we put
crayons, notebook, pens and pencils, ruler, and other
things. We will donate the purses to Foundations for
Living, which helps the homeless and the backpacks
to Wisconsin Nicaragua Partnership to give to kids in
Nicaragua. It makes us feel happy to help others.
Sincerely,
Isabelle (8), Lucille(6), Loretta (5)
Kirby loves learning about proper ways to save, when to spend, and how to share charitably in his community but, before you can spend, save, or share you have to earn. Summer is a great time of the year to learn about the responsibility and independence that comes with being your own boss! Watch how Kirby and his friends turn an average summer into a great learning experience entrepreneurship!
Kirby and his friends, Cash and Coin, were playing hopscotch outside when they saw old Ms. Katie getting ready to mow her lawn.
Ms. Katie was struggling and the group went over to help her.
“Hey Ms. Katie, can we help you mow your lawn and clean up the yard?” Kirby asked.
“I would love the help.” Ms. Katie said, “Thank you!”
Kirby and his friends helped Ms. Katie clean up her yard. Once they were finished, Ms. Katie turned to them and said, “Thank you so much. You all are very kind to help an old woman like me. Here is $5 for each of you.”
“Oh you don’t have to give us money Ms. Katie, we wanted to help,” said Kirby.
“I insist,” she said. “You know, children; I bet a lot of people around the neighborhood would really appreciate it if you helped them with their yards too.”
“That sounds like a great idea!” said Ryan.
“Yeah! We could even turn it into a business,” said Cash, “We could call ourselves the ‘Lawn Service Helpers’.”
The group went to Kirby’s house and created a plan for their new business. They chose what services they would offer to their neighbors and how they would promote their company.
They made flyers to post around the neighborhood, talked to Ms. Katie about other neighbors that needed help with their lawns, and walked around the neighborhood letting everyone know that the “Lawn Service Helpers” were in business.
Kirby, Cash, and Coin helped their neighbors with cleaning, mowing, and taking care of their lawns. The “Lawn Service Helpers” became so popular
that Kirby and his friend continued to help their neighbors all summer.
