THE ARTICLE

The Article

The article I chose to analyze for this assignment was Yahoo Finance's article Onboarding with a Human Touch from ADP

The article basically speaks to the fact that only 20 percent of employees, and 9 percent of managers feel that their companies do onboarding extremely well

Who is ADP?

ADP is essentially a company that looks for ways to improve the workers experience, through organized payroll, HR, and benefits

They look to connect Human Relations with Human Resources

What does the article say?

The article talks about the onboarding process as an important part of the processAccording to my boss, employees make a decision on whether they like a job in the first week

The first days and weeks on the job for new employees are crucial and make or break a new employee's impression on whether or not they want to stay. It is both an exciting and stressful time

THE CONCEPTS OF HUMAN RELATIONS

The Concept of Human Relations

Intro to Human Relations

According to Merriam-Webster, human relations is a study of human problems arising from organizational and interpersonal relations

The Concept of Human Relations

Intro to Human Relations

According to Merriam-Webster, human relations is a study of human problems arising from organizational and interpersonal relations

The graphic below basically gives an idea of an IDEAL situation in human relations

THE CONCEPTS OF HUMAN RESOURCES

Human Resources

Human Resources and Human Relations are two different things.

Human relations is a department within an organization that deals with the people who work for that organization.

Human Relations VS Human Resources

Human Resources starts with the idea that all people should be for one common theme, and working together. More of a team approach to Organizational Communication

Human Relations basically says that a happier person is a more productive person.

Human Resources on the other hand, takes the opposite perspective, that a more productive person is a happier person.

THE CONNECTION

Models of Socialization

In the chapter, we learned about the models of Socialization. The socialization process model tells us that the pre-arrival of employees, is followed by an encounter

That encounter is followed by an attempt for the new employee to fit in with the current staff.

Then, after all that, the outcomes take placeProductivity and Commitment

Turnover

Necessary Information for Socialization to Occur

In the chapter, we learned about the content of Socialization.Role-related informationPeople don't want to go into a new job, and just sit and do paperwork for days. They need time to get involved first

The article supports this information, and gives a connection to the real world, when Anna Carsen, VP product management at ADP said The first days and weeks on the job for new employees are crucial and make or break a new employee's impression on whether or not they want to stay. It is both an exciting and stressful time. The last thing a new hire wants to do is sit in isolation, wading through mounds of paperwork

What if the process doesn't work out? Why didn't it work?

In the chapter, we learned that individuals on the sideline of communication networks are more likely to exit

We can connect this to the article from ADP, where it talks about creating a process where employees are welcomed, and comfortable before even walking on the job.

Research Questions

I expect to in the future see further research done on how we can improve human relations in the workplace. Is this necessary? Would having better human relations really improve the workplace, and is it possible?

Research Questions

I expect more research from companies having to do with the ever increasing effect that social media has on them, and how social media will effect this process. What do you think?

Social Media will Impact Organizational Socialization
