Dear Parents and Guardians This week is National Child Protection Week and it invites all Australians to play their part to promote the safety and wellbeing of children and young people. “Protecting children is everyone’s business.” This year NAPCAN (National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect) encourages us to build on “Protecting Children is Everyone’s Business: Play Your Part” by focussing on the theme ‘Stronger Communities, Safer Children’. This theme emphasises the importance and value of connected communities in keeping children and young people safe and well.

Communities in which children are seen and heard, where their participation is valued and where their families can get the support they need are stronger communities which contribute to keeping children safe and well.

Our focus at St Jude’s School is to support our students and their families to keep children safe at all times. The Protective Behaviours Program as well as resilience building and the development of compassion and empathy are all key elements of this strategy to empower and support children.

Our Pastoral Care Worker, Sister Sandra, is always available to support children and families as they work through difficulties in family life and other situations. Our Teachers and the Religious Education programs also empower students to understand the support and guidance to be found through our faith.

We continually strive to work with families to resolve problems and encourage happy and thriving children. The formation of the St Jude’s Social Justice Group also offers students an opportunity to focus on and seek to help others who are in need of this – a great way to develop empathy and concern for others.

At our assembly on Monday morning this week, all students were congratulated on their participation

and behaviour at the Faction Sports Carnival last Friday. They were truly wonderful! Congratulations to MERCY Faction for winning the shield in 2016 and to both Petry and Foley Factions for their spirited competition!

The weather on Friday was the beginning of some lovely Spring weather and provided the perfect backdrop for a wonderful opportunity for families to enjoy lunch together. Thank you to the many parents, grandparents and friends who attended and special thanks to the Friends of St Jude for providing the delicious morning tea and lunch treats for us to enjoy. Thank you also to the many parents who supported the finger food stall with their donations and those parents who helped to set up in the morning and pack up at the end of the day. We thank everyone sincerely for all of your work!

Our School is always busy with varied learning and challenge opportunities for students! I congratulate the following students who are our recent Times Tables champions : Yr.2 Champion: Edna Sunil R/Up: Ella Thuo Yr.3 Champion: Harry Gao R/Up: Athei Younis Yr.4 Champion: Alena Sunil R/Up: Elijah Moonemalle Yr.5 Champion: Eileen Sunil R/Up: Kiara Severin Yr.6 Champion: Stephni Jesuthasan R/Up: Noah Moonemalle

All students should continually work on remembering their times table, as the ability to have this instant recall supports all other mathematical operations. The Challenge will be on again in Week One of Term Four – keep practising!

The St Jude’s Spelling Bee for Years Four, Five Six is coming up soon – Week One of Term Four! This is a great preparation opportunity for the Interschool Spelling Bee to be held in Week Three of the Term and so interested students should register their participation with their class Teacher so that they may receive the word lists and start practising!

Another opportunity to demonstrate Learning is the Japanese Speaking Contest to be held on Wednesday 14th September at 9.00 am in the hall. Several students from Years Two to Six will demonstrate their excellent Japanese language skills to an invited panel of three judges. Mrs Mariko Waghorn has organised this special event for the students and we are really looking forward to hearing their expertise! This Friday Year Three students will present the assembly at 9.00am—I hope you can join us! God Bless, Lyn Stone, Principal

As we begin the season of Spring it is amazing to think about how quickly the year is passing and how busy we are!

Term 3 has been filled with so many varied learning experiences including a visit from the Constitutional Centre and an Excursion to Herdsman Lake.

Our MAPPEN topic of Money Matters challenged us to create a Savings plan and to focus more on identifying our needs and waiting for our wants.

The class Bank Incursion-Start Smart was inspiring and challenged us to think of different ways of saving. To complete the unit we visited Perth Mint and witnessed the process of melting gold, the making of coins and saw the amazing one tonne largest gold coin in the world.

In R.E we celebrated the Feast of Mary McKillop and The Assumption of the Blessed Mary and completed our unit on the Spirit Frees which was an introduction to the sacrament of Confirmation. A very special spiritual moment for us all was the visit we made to the Door of Mercy at St Mary’s Cathedral and the welcome and blessing we received from the Dean of the Cathedral, Monsignor Keating.

Year 5 NEWS

This Term has seen a strong immersion in the Arts with Edu-dance, The Poetry Competition, Song Fest and a performance by the choir at Performing Arts Concert. Our literature interests were sparked during Book Week by an Excursion to Amherst Library to hear author Christie Byrne speak about her writing. After this we challenged ourselves to improve our Narrative writing by applying editing skills to improve punctuation and the complexity of our sentence structure and to increase the use of descriptive vocabulary.

Our eco team has kept up the class scrap paper recycling and we are still collecting aluminium cans to fundraise for Caritas. We are working towards waste free lunch boxes and alternatives to the use of plastic bags and lunch wrap. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE, RESPECT REPLENISH, REFUSE.

With all the busyness we have enjoyed the moments of mindfulness and our weekly meditation which has helped us to focus and relax.
