2018 Fiscal Year Impact Report

A Year of Growth and Progress

A New BeginningA patron saint of desperate cases and lost causes is what our name defines,

I’ve lived a forlorn life of despair and hopelessness which may have lead me to St. Jude’s but now I live a life of success

and happiness like many of you.

No longer am I a child, I’m a young adult and a good mother. I aspire to be who

I want to be and who I shall be.

I will forever be a part of St. Jude’s where “my past does not define my future.”

“You are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.” ~ Christopher Robin

These powerful words inspire the work we do at St. Jude’s Ranch for Children every single day! We know the children and young people entrusted to our care have had to endure unspeakable abuse, neglect and many challenges. Yet, in the face of adversity, they demonstrate incredible resiliency, courage and success!

Because of YOU, in 2018 we were able to serve more children and young people than any other single year in our 52-year history!

Because of YOU, we provided safe homes, high quality meals, top-notch tutoring, important life skills training, mental health services and much more!

Because of YOU, we helped many young people graduate from high school and be accepted into various colleges and universities!

Because of YOU, we helped children and young people be seen, heard and valued!

Because of YOU, our community of services inspired hope and healing for all of those we serve!

Sincere gratitude to all of our partners and donors! Because of your investments in our agency and programs, 2018 was a year of continued work to support our mission of transforming the lives of those we serve by breaking the cycles of abuse and helping children and young people become thriving and positive members of our community.

We look forward to 2019 being a year of continued growth and service in Southern Nevada. I thank you in advance for your continued assistance. Together we can do so much to positively impact children and young people at-promise, not at risk. They are at promise of greatness if only we have the courage to stand with them.

In your partnership,

Christina VelaExecutive DirectorSt. Jude’s Ranch for Children

LETTER FROM EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

I am excited to report on the important and significant strides of this past year for St. Jude’s Ranch for Children. We continued to serve those with no voice and most in need, child victims of abuse and neglect, pregnant teens and homeless youth and young adults in Southern Nevada. We also took pride in our sibling preservation program, which touches most every youth in foster care in Southern Nevada. The year wasn’t without setbacks and challenges but also incredible progress, opportunities and partnerships. We are so thankful for every person that invested their time, resources, and talents to benefit those we care for. 2018 was also the year that St. Jude’s Ranch for Children announced our intention to build The Healing Center for the specialized care of child sex trafficking. Subsequently, because of our mission, our capabilities and our experience, we are best situated to tackle this epidemic. We hired visionary architects, held town hall meetings with our surrounding neighbors, continue to have conversations with all relevant government agencies and of course reached out to our most gracious donors. We are very grateful and impressed with the sheer number of friends who want to help in this endeavor and are willing to stand with victims against this form of human slavery. In the past, I informed you of the strategic goals that we had set out to achieve and our progress at that time. Those strategic goals, although extremely important were laid as one-year goals. Thank you to a very dedicated staff and board of trustees; I am proud to report that we were so successful in our one-year goals that we recently met again in February 2019 and began groundwork on a 5-year strategic plan. For over 52 years we have helped break the cycle of abuse and neglect in Southern Nevada and it is important to us that we have never strayed from our roots or our mission. Success for us would be to work ourselves out of job because there is no such thing as child and youth victims of abuse and homelessness but until that time arrives we intend to be the charity of choice when helping children, youth and young adults. We stand today, more able to service those most in need. With Gratitude,

Lance T. KnightChairman of the BoardSt. Jude’s Ranch for Children
