Great romance and tragedy are intrinsic to Shakespeare’s works. Shakespeare’s Globe, the London-based theatre company, raises the bar further with a fresh take and new ideas for The Taming of the Shrew.

Shakespeare’s Globe will be bringing the controversial play to Singapore this October. The play revolves around the demure Bianca, who is about to be married off, and her sister, the “ungovernable” and “shrewish” Katherina, whom the dodgy Petruchio attempts

What’s different is that this play, accused of being misogynistic, will feature an all-female cast this time. There will be other refreshing ideas and a surprise ending.

Joe Murphy, Director of The Taming of the Shrew, was recently in town to have a look at the venue and “to get a sense of the town, to get more ideas”.

He shares with us some interesting bites.

Why set up an elizabethan-style stage? We wanted to be faithful to the spirit of the play. The music and the lights will also be done live. All these enhance the experience of the story.

The costumes will be from the last century and the play will be presented in a universal way that everyone can relate.

Why the taming of the shreW for singapore?There’ve been some interesting questions asked here on the rights of women and equality, and this play can contribute

to the discussion.

Why an all-female cast?I can’t believe that the writer [Shakespeare] was misogynistic. Having an all-female cast makes it more of a comment or indictment on patriarchal society. It gives us the licence to be brave in telling Katherina’s story.

With eight empowered talents on stage, you know it is not misogynistic. It asks questions and is emotionally potent.

What is unique about this production?Apart from eight women actors, we have live music originally composed and Bianca and Kat have a saxophone duet!

The audience would have never seen the end speech and Petruchio’s reaction to it like the way we’re doing it. It is a unique idea.

The Taming of the Shrew (Shakespeare’s Globe) will be playing from Oct 2 to 13, 7.30pm, at the Fort Gate, Fort Canning Park. Tickets are available at $68 to $138, from Sistic.

Alison Ash lee shows that it is never too late to pursue your passion by switching career paths at the age of 32.

A secretary for most of her working life, Ash, as she prefers to be known, used to design clothes for her paper dolls while growing up.

“I used to create new clothes for my paper dolls when I was a little girl. And my uncle, who saw me doing that, told me, ‘If you could do that on paper, why don’t you try making a real one?’ I never forgot it,” Ash recounts.

With only an O level certificate, Ash had worked as a secretary for 16 years but her love for fashion never waned.

Ash had also just returned from Milan where she was pursuing a certificate in image consulting. Prior to that, she had also worked as a stylist’s assistant where she helped out on magazine shoots as well as assisted with the styling of celebrities such as Karen Mok.

Ash had recently taken part in T-shirt styling in Samsung Fashion Steps Out 2013.

“Singaporeans are slowly opening up and they are more interested in foreign trends, and it is a good thing as long as they aren’t affected by the warm weather,” says Ash.

“I just wish that they wouldn’t

just settle for T-shirts and jeans! In Europe, the cityscape is dull but the people are colourful. In Singapore, the city is vibrant but the people aren’t. We should embrace colour more!” she exclaims.

Ash loves styling according to a story; her concept being the particular trend she wants to channel. She shows us some of her styling charts inspired by The Wizard of Oz as well as the recent Fast and Furious 6 movie to illustrate her point.

“I can be a rock star today and a princess tomorrow,” she says with a smile.

celebrating 30 years of bringing French bakery fare into Asia, Delifrance has launched its first Michelin sandwich, “Le Paris-Singapore”.

Created by Michelin-star chef brothers, Jacques and Laurent Pourcel from Montpellier, this creation gives the word “sandwich” a whole new meaning.

MiCheLin CheFsChef Jacques was in Singapore to show off his creation. The sandwich is filled with French baby spinach, roasted chicken with Thai chilli sauce, pineapple slices, wakame, and mayonnaise and oyster sauce spread in between a classic French baguette.

The twin brothers run the restaurant Le Jardin des Sens in Montpellier as well as others in Bangkok, Tokyo, Shanghai, Geneva, Marrakesh, Casablanca and Paris. The “Le Paris-Singapore” sandwich uses specially-imported baguettes from France, which has an aroma of fresh cream and almond.

Their Oyster Omelette has a generous serving of juicy oysters cooked just right, and is delicious and not too starchy; the Hokkien Mee comes with their homemade chilli, and is not too moist or dry.

Another is Moi Lum Restaurant, run by the founder’s son and grandson, Mr Chris Kuang, offering Cantonese cuisine. Their Majestic Roast Chicken is to die for, with crispy skin and tender, white meat served with prawn fritters – the way it was done in the 1950s. Their tasty, irresistible Salted Egg Yolk with Fish Skin will be launched in July.

otheR gReat dishesMuthu Curry’s Fish Head Curry also does not disappoint. It is fragrant and infuses the soft fish meat, giving it a lovely taste.

Fortune Food, located at Chinatown Complex Market & Food Centre, serves good Popiah full of fresh ingredients such as turnip, bean sprouts, crushed peanuts and carrot wrapped in a paper thin skin. Their chicken salad with wasabi mayo roll is an interesting twist, with the right mix of chicken floss, wasabi and mayonnaise.

an alternative artisanal proprietor has opened its doors in the quaint Tan Boon Liat Building at Outram Park.

Founded by Bruce Chapman and Robert Collick – the same brains behind Jones the Grocer Singapore – the place carries a variety of condiments, spreads, coffee and even bread.

aRtisanaL PRoduCeLocal roasters from Toby’s Estate in Singapore developed five coffee blends. Each blend has a distinct

flavour profile and is available for tasting at the warehouse outlet at Tan Boon Liat Building.

The store also houses Australian ice-cream brand Pat and Stick’s with to-die-for ice cream sandwiches as well as bread and patisseries from B.A.O (Bakery Artisan Original) – brainchild of former Canele Patisserie pastry chef, Christophe Grilo – every weekend.

We love the pain au chocolat from B.A.O which has a honey chocolate filling, making the pastry even more sinful.

The Providore Mandarin Gallery Café has also opened. The café serves breakfast, lunch and a small-plate sharing menu in the evenings.

The duo also has future plans to expand into Japan in 2014.

To complement the Michelin sandwich, Delifrance has also partnered with fellow French company Monin to create two sparkling drinks: Le Spicy Mangue Collins and the Pink Grapefruit & Elderflower Spritz.

The Le Paris Singapore sandwich is available in select Delifrance outlets such as at Raffles City and Jem, until Aug 31.

PLeNTY oF FAvouriTes You can’t blame the guy for disappearing, musically, for the past seven years though – he’s been busy with all of the above, and finding the love of his life in Jessica Biel. i’m glad that he did, because Mirrors, the song that he wrote with her in mind, is definitely one of my favourites in the album, The 20/20 experience.

add to that the winner that is

suit & Tie (featuring Jay-Z), and you’ll have the urge to shift your weight from foot to foot and snap some fingers while you’re feeling the groove. another old friend, Timbaland (with whom he has had several collaborations with in the past) also produces the album and appears on a few tracks, most notably in Tunnel Vision.

if you enjoyed their previous collaborations and works, it’s likely that you’ll be tapping your feet to this as well.

PusHiNG THe BouNDAries Justin definitely stretches his limits in this album, with tracks like Let That Groove Get in. it has such a tribal feel to it, you can almost picture several Latinas and their bountiful behinds doing the salsa, or the Congo.

Then, he throws us off with Blue Ocean Floor, a chill-out eclectic track with so many genres layered within; that it sounds more like it came from an Oceanlab album.

Overall, The 20/20 experience is an all-round experience for the audience, and is a quality offering that i never would have imagined would come from a member of a boy band. W

These are serious warning signs of osteoarthritis.

WHAT IS OSTEOARTHRITIS?A slippery tissue called cartilage covers the end of the bone in the joint, a place where bones meet. When you move, this protective cartilage allows your bones to slide over each other smoothly, and absorbs the shock to your bones.

As time passes, the surface layer of cartilage breaks and wears away. Without the lubrication provided by cartilage, bones rub against each other, causing pain, swelling, and hindered joint movement.

It is common among people over 60 years old, and the pain and stiffness are the worst at the end of the day. It becomes difficult to walk, climb stairs, squat or kneel.

People are more susceptible if they are obese, or have joint trauma or injury, muscle weakness, a family history of osteoporosis, or work in certain occupations. There is no single test to diagnose osteoarthritis, and most doctors use methods such

as X-rays, physical examination, blood tests, or testing of joint fluid to diagnose it and rule out other diseases.

TREATMENT OPTIONS Currently, there is no medication that can cure osteoarthritis or regrow cartilage in osteoarthritic joints. However, there are treatment options to alleviate one’s pain and discomfort.

Consider embarking on an exercise routine of strengthening exercises, aerobic activities, range-of-motion activities, and balance and agility exercises. Exercise can also reduce weight, and thus reduces stress on weight-bearing joints, limits further injury and increases mobility.

Physiotherapy, analgesics, rest, joint care, and walking aids may be helpful as well. In severe cases, joint replacement surgery may be necessary. Much research is being conducted on tissue engineering to grow cartilage, tools for early detection, medications to prevent, slow down or reverse joint damage, complementary and alternative therapies and vitamins and supplements for osteoarthritis.

DIET AND SUPPLEMENTS A healthy diet is important as a preventative measure – calcium

to keep the bones strong, omega-3 fatty acids to reduce inflammation and subsequent joint damage, and Vitamins A, C, E and selenium for their anti-oxidation properties.

Classic tales such as Madam White Snake, The Monkey King and The Butterfly Lovers have

been told through the traditional art form of Chinese Opera for decades.

Now, every Friday and Saturday night, the Chinese Opera Teahouse on Smith Street will perform an excerpt of The Patriotic Princess: about the last princess of the Ming Dynasty.

We speak with Ms See Too Hoi Siang, a 37-year veteran of Chinese opera, on the art.

What got you interested in Chinese opera? The beauty of the art. It is a combination of art forms that consists of makeup, singing, dancing and acting.

What is Chinese opera training like? Training involves singing – how to project your voice and learn the tactics to control your vocal range, and stretching – to make sure your body is flexible to perform all skilful ways of dancing and fighting. Although it depends on how talented each individual is, we believe that practice makes perfect.

hoW long do you take to get ready for a performanCe? To prepare and perform on a regular show, I take about an hour, sometimes between 30 minutes to 45 minutes, to prepare (from makeup to dressing-up). Most artists take around two hours.

WhiCh has been the most memorable moment on the job? When I did my curtain call for my

37-year presentation show, I felt really appreciated and I could feel the love showered upon me from everyone present.

Would you enCourage the youth of today to try their hand at Chinese opera? Yes, come and learn more about this rich form of art. Chinese opera is a good platform to many other forms of arts too!

What makes you happy? I’m content with what I have. I believe in being kind to others and being loved by others keeps me happy. W

stories & plays Most of the storylines in Chinese opera or plays are based upon the Chinese classics and legends. As such, all the opera plays convey certain values or virtues from Chinese philosophy or tradition. These range from loyalty to love to fidelity.

masks & ColoursVarious masks and make up patterns are used in Chinese opera. Each look and colour has a specific meaning. Generally, a white face depicts someone who is sinister or shady.

Sometimes the colours may be tied to popular characters. Red, associated with bravery and loyalty, is the colour of the face of Guan Yu, the famous Three Kingdoms general.

Where to WatCh performanCes Today, public performances are rare except occasionally by the

remaining few opera houses, or in public spaces (especially in the heartlands) during the Chinese lunar Seventh Month. This is part of the festivity of the Chinese Ghost Festival and is for the appeasement of spirits and entertainment of their living relatives.

7. royal PalaCe & Silver Pagoda One of the main historical sites in Cambodia, the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda cannot be missed. One amazing fact is that the buildings of the Royal Treasury and the Villa of Napoleon III here, built in Egypt in 1866 for the opening of the

Suez Canal, were transported and presented to the Cambodian king as a gift. Initially constructed out of wood in 1866, the Silver Pagoda was expanded by King Sihanouk who had the floor inlaid with solid silver tiles, hence its name.

6. tonle SaP lakeTonle Sap is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. It has been designated as a “biosphere" by UNESCO due to the richness and diversity of life found there.

Here, you will find colourful houses like no other, young children rowing boats and even playing with pythons, and many Cambodians living off their catch. Tonle Sap is a rustic and magnificent picture. One of the famous residents here is the Giant Mekong Catfish. W
