There’s something about the moreish quality of Mexican food that makes it attractive to Singaporeans. Here are a few places that have joined the fray, or that you can try.

guzman y gomezSince its inception in Australia in 2006, Guzman y Gomez creator Steven Marks, a New Yorker, brought traditional Mexican flavours to Australia and then to Singapore.

The result is huge Burritos ($7.90-$10.90), Soft and Hard Tacos ($7.90 for two, $10.90 for three) and other sides such as salads, quesadillas and nachos. We especially love the Grilled Steak filling in a chipotle marinade with pico de gallo and salsa for a nice kick.

lower east sidePartners Christopher Lim and Claudio Sandri of Spathe Public House have started their own "taquiera" in East Coast. Christopher lived in California for six years where he had ready access to Mexican food and he brought this concept to Singapore.

Instead of a fried fish taco, try their Tilapia Taco ($12) comprising a broiled fish with tomatoes, onions, red peppers, cilantro and caper berries. Their tacos also come with three spice levels.

lunch hour juSt got better in the Central Business District with the opening of Japanese restaurant Marukyu.

Specialising in omakase type set meals and fresh food, Marukyu makes a good setting for lunch.

Started by Chef Derrick Lau, the distinctly Japanese décor of bamboo and wood sets the scene for a tranquil lunch.

Omakase – loosely translated to “I’ll leave it to you” – means leaving your meal selection at the hands of the chef.

trust the CheFThere are regular set lunches available but if you want to splurge on something more premium, try the Lunch Omakase Hana ($68) or the Lunch Omakase Maru ($88).

The Lunch Omakase Hana comprises two kinds of seasonal appetisers, three kinds of sashimi, a seasonal simmered dish, a seasonal grilled dish, a noodle dish and a dessert.

When we were there,

the menu started off with monkfish liver and seasoned roe for a light opening before the sashimi of winter yellow tail, slightly-seared megajiki and a scallop flavoured with truffles.

Pristine Fresh The seasonal simmered dish that day was a snow crab served in its shell with turnip and carrots in a broth. The next dish of winter black sea cod was marinated in a miso base sauce for an almost ambrosia-like taste.

The noodle dish did not disappoint, with the atypical angel hair pasta with truffle oil and salmon.

Dessert came in a pretty martini glass nestled in a leaf. If you’ve ever wanted your entire meal decided for you, fuss-free, try Marukyu for a treat.

French restaurant Fleur de Sel has joined the likes of Brasserie Gavroche and Maison Fatien in

the Tanjong Pagar area, with an updated version of French sensibilities.

Chef Alexandre Lozachmeur’s immense love for fine French cuisine and wine, and his years of experience working in the kitchens of some of the best restaurants in the world, has culminated in the creative menus at Fleur de Sel.

set Meals to Please If you have a client meeting or just a little more time for lunch, why not try the Executive Set Lunch ($38++) or the Fleur de Sel Set Lunch ($48++). Both set lunches have three-courses that change weekly. When we were there, we tried the latter set and loved it.

We liked the starter of Le Homard, a Boston lobster bisque, lobster tartar with sour cream and croutons. The tartar sits in a bowl before the warm lobster bisque is poured in, making it a rich and fresh bowl of soup.

La Cabillaud – a seared Atlantic codfish, baby spinach with Charlotte potatoes and beurre blanc sauce – was interesting to the palate. The beurre blanc sauce complemented the seared codfish’s meaty texture well. There is also a choice of two desserts in the set meal.

a la Carte orders Apart from the set meals, their a la carte menu also boasts dishes such as Le Lapin ($35), an Arborio rice risotto with shredded braised rabbit, mushrooms, olives, tomatoes

and rabbit jus and L’agneau ($42), a seared lamb saddle with a big-cut ratatouille, socca crisp and thyme-flavoured lamb jus.

Pineapple lovers should try their L’ananas ($15), a Sarawak pineapple roasted with rum, coriander and topped with vanilla ice cream. Mmm… W

kirin haS launched its latest innovation – Frozen Foam Beer.

Yes, you read it right. Kirin Ichiban’s premium first press draft beer made of 100 per cent malt now comes with a frozen foam head made from that very same liquid gold.

This brand new Frozen Foam Beer, and beer drinking experience, was unveiled at Switch by Timbre on Nov 14. Switch is the first live music entertainment establishment in Singapore to serve the Frozen Foam Beer.

Kirin’s Frozen Foam Beer served at Switch comes in five flavours – Cranberry, Lime, Lychee, Mango and Blackcurrant. Each flavour had been carefully-designed to complement the crisp and fruity notes of Kirin Ichiban beer. The lychee flavour is especially pleasant, but can be a bit too sweet after a while.

sealinG in the Cold The frosty foam is dispensed from a special machine from Kirin, at a temperature of -5 degrees Celsius. The frozen foam head acts as a lid, covering the Kirin Ichiban draft beer and sealing in its coldness for up to 30 minutes.

If you’ve ever experienced the problem of trying to keep your beer cold without adding ice cubes, you’d understand how timely this invention is.

“I am very honoured to be leading this incredible line-up of amazing musicians with Shimada,” said Loong.

The stunning Ryna Mori stood out as the lead vocalist, with her soulful and soothing voice. Her opening song, Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” immediately roused the audience.

Method1. Cut tofu into small pieces, and season with salt and pepper.

2. Make ginseng sauce using the ingredients listed above. Grind pear and add to ginseng sauce.

3. Wash the baby leaves salad and cut cherry tomatoes in half.

4. Cut white mushrooms into pieces and pan fry.

5. Remove water from tofu, and cover with starch and flour. Deep fry the tofu.

6. Place deep-fried tofu and other vegetables onto a plate. Pour ginseng sauce on the top and it’s done.

Singaporean Songbird Olivia Ong has done us proud since her first debut album Girl Meets Bossa Nova.

Her ethereal voice has also been heard in the theme song for the hit TV series, “The Little Nonya”. We managed to chat with her about her new role as spokesperson for beauty brand FANCL, and the latest in her life.

how do you like your new role as FanCl’s sPokesPerson?I’m very happy and definitely very flattered to be chosen as FANCL’S spokesperson! I love that FANCL’S philosophy is about being preservative-free in all their skincare beauty products, which means being free of any harsh chemicals. (For me that is very important!)

While paying homage to the original Korean film, this Oldboy heads into its own shock-filled, shadowy territory. Based both on the graphic novel by Garon Tsuchiya and Nobuaki Minegishi, as well as the highly-acclaimed film by Park Chan Wook, this American remake has director Spike Lee at the helm.

sudden disaPPearanCe The titular character of Joe Doucett (portrayed by Josh Brolin) is a downward-spiralling advertising executive and absent father. One drunken night, he is kidnapped out of the blue and placed into a mind-numbing solitary confinement within a bizarre, hotel-like prison.

Joe remains there for the next 20 years – full of torment that transpires without any indication of his captor’s identity or motive.

Inexplicably released from his nightmare, Joe emerges into the world with a single obsession: to uncover the person who orchestrated his punishment – and to, more urgently, understand why. But, though he is now physically free, he is still being manipulated, still caught up in a twisted web of conspiracy and payback that threatens to engulf him.

His quest for answers leads him to a, young social worker (played by Elizabeth Olsen), and ultimately to an elusive man (Sharlto Copley) who allegedly holds the key to his liberation.

direCtor’s iMPressions As it did for so many others, Oldboy consumed Lee the first time he saw it, years ago.

“I was just blown away by it. It was a completely unique story with all the best elements of mystery and revenge, portrayed in the grittiest possible of ways,” the director recalls.

“People had never seen anything like it – I hadn’t either,”

“He went into quite a bit of dignified detail, which was extremely helpful to us in terms of deciding that that period in her life was now history,” explained Robert Bernstein, one of the producers.

“We decided now we could interpret that and make a film based on facts,” he said.

direCtor CoMes on board Later, Oliver Hirschbiegel, director of Downfall was brought on board to direct the film. Hirschbiegel had heard of Princess Diana but he wasn’t at all familiar with the story that they wanted to tell.

When he was first sent the script, he admitted he didn’t want to read it.

“I wasn’t interested in Princess Diana but my agent told me that

Stephen Jeffreys is a very fine writer, so I read it. I was totally surprised. Ten pages in, I was completely hooked and I got what I hadn’t expected – a very exciting and touching love story,” he said.

MetaMorPhosis? The heart of the film is the rite of passage of Diana from a slightly depressed, lonely lady to somebody who had found fulfilment in her personal life, which extrapolated into her professional life. Within that story is the love story between Diana and Khan.

“Who knows what would have happened if she were still alive today?” asked Bernstein.

Khan said, fairly recently, when he opened the hospital in Pakistan that Diana would’ve definitely been at his side as his wife or married to somebody else.

“This gives you the sense that from his point of view, it wasn’t necessarily over but he didn’t have the opportunity to have a second chance and that is the tragedy of this story,” said Bernstein. W

About 150km from the border of Myanmar, in the South-western part of China, lies Lijiang. Approximately 30 times the size of Singapore and with 1.22 million people,

there’s plenty of room for everyone. One of the reasons for its low population density

is, perhaps, its remote location. Fortunately for Singaporeans, there is now a four-hour direct flight from Changi on TigerAir.

like the Phoenix FroM the ashes In 1996, Lijiang was struck by a major earthquake measuring 7 on the Richter scale. In its aftermath, much of the city was rebuilt according to safer building codes.

Many of the hotels are new, clean and stylish to accommodate their newest industry – tourism. Quite a number of the city hotels are only a short walking distance from the main attraction – the Old Town.

Much of the rigid structures of the Old Town – walls, streets and ceilings – fell during the earthquake. Except for the rare few buildings, which remain intact, most of the Old Town had been restored to preserve the original experience.

Even the cobblestone streets have been replaced. Ironically, the new ones have rough surfaces, while the old ones had been smoothened from hundreds of years of foot traffic.

After the earthquake, all the new buildings were restricted in height. As a result, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, Lijiang’s second main attraction, still graces Lijiang’s skyline.

world-Class Cultural heritaGe The Old Town emerged some 800 to 900 years ago. It gained importance over the years as the Southern centre for silk embroidery trading. As part of the Southern Silk Route, caravans of horses, on two-year journeys, plied through the Old Town carrying commodities to places such as Tibet and Iran.

Today, the descendants of those horses carry quarry of a different nature – cash paying tourists. If horseback riding is not your thing, the town is a great place to meander on foot.

There are hundreds, if not thousands of shops, tastefully enclosed within “ancient” shop houses, offering drinks, souvenirs, local street food, and different ethnic cuisines.

One of the most popular items with tourists is the rose petal biscuit. It’s like a tau sar piah with rose petal paste filling. It is sweet and dry, and with a mild scent of rose in every bite.

The Old Town is quite large since it is designed to accommodate legions of domestic tourists during “Golden Week” [the Lunar New Year holiday period] and school holidays. I would recommend spending an afternoon and evening there, as the place looks quite different when the sun goes down.

During daylight, the town appears more ancient. However, at night, thanks to electricity, the town twinkles like a big Christmas tree.

Built on a slope, the Old Town’s well-lit rooftops seem to cascade from the hilltop down to the town centre. There are many places to eat and many interesting types of food to try such as bamboo-stuffed rice, stir-fried sparrow, sautéed tofu, and many others.

Visit “Bar Street”, a side alley within the Old Town teeming with bars, loud karaoke music and hostesses in beautiful and elaborate traditional costumes, enticing weary travellers to quench their thirst. Like Old Town, I suspect this tradition hasn’t changed for centuries either.

Despite its outward rowdiness, “Bar Street” is clean and feels very safe. But, it is not without controversy.

Lijiang’s significance in history and the preservation of the Old Town have helped it to

claim a respectable status as a UNESCO World Heritage site. However, “Bar Street” remains a thorn in its respectability.

The bar scene, loud music and touting are quite fun for tourists but belittle Old Town’s cultural significance, and threaten its heritage status. Subsequently, regulations have been created to curb the noise and to comply with cultural standards.
