Shinya Aoki’s game plan usually involves breaking his opponent’s arm while trying to take him down, earning him the title of

“Most Dangerous Man in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA)”.

Shinya Aoki is a Japanese mixed martial artist, grappler and former police trainee, who is currently competing for the One Fighting Championship (One FC) lightweight title against last season’s winner, Kotetsu “No Face” Boku.

He is best known for his flexibility and submission skills – often taking opponents by surprise – earning him the nickname Tobikan Judan, meaning “grandmaster of flying submissions". Speaking through his trainer, Chatri Sityodtong, we get into the mind of this prize fighter.

a MERE four years ago, the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) was foreign to Singapore. Since then, the scene has exploded with thousands currently in the community.

“When Evolve started, it was a struggle to get people interested or media coverage. Now, MMA is getting more mainstream acceptance,” says Chatri Sityodong, founder and chairman of Evolve MMA.

Even children are getting into the fray, with kids as young as six years old taking part in MMA programmes. Evolve MMA also teaches self-defence skills which help build confidence and discipline.

The One FC sees the world’s best fighters come together in one place with 600 million viewers in 70 countries. Be prepared to see knock-outs and incapacitating submissions.

One FC tickets are available from Sistic, and it will be held on April 5.

G.I. Joe:

The very exisTence of GI Joe could be in jeopardy. After the events of G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, the team is back. This time, apart from taking the fight to their mortal enemy, the malevolent Cobra organisation, they face a threat from within the government that could wipe them out.

abOut thE fIlMG.I. Joe: Retaliation is directed by Jon M Chu and is written by Rhett Reese

and Paul Wernick, based on Hasbro toy company’s G.I. Joe characters. Among the film’s many stars are Byung-hun Lee, Adrianne Palicki, Ray Park, Channing Tatum and Dwayne Johnson.

Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who has had a hand in some of the most successful film franchises to date including Transformers, felt that the first film’s conclusion left the door open to explore more within the world of G.I. Joe.

“I thought that ending the first film with the suggestion that there was an imposter in the oval

office was something that was completely unique and would be an interesting thing to examine… It was important to find a director who would really own it completely and be able to take all the multi-layered characters and treat them with gravity,” says di Bonaventura.

thE fan bOy DIREctORIt was Adam Goodman, president of the Paramount Film Group, who surprised di Bonaventura by suggesting rising director Jon M Chu.

“Jon and I had a funny first meeting because his

experiences are pretty far away from mine, and vice versa, but I discovered that he grew up with the G.I. Joe versus Cobra mythology and understood the internal aesthetics of what G.I. Joe is and that is something that’s invaluable,” recalls di Bonaventura.

In Chu, producers saw a fresh set of eyes with genuine enthusiasm.

Chu Recalls, “I grew up with G.I. Joe and was familiar back before the cartoon and comic books. My version would be what any fan boy would want to see.”

thE g.I. JOE PanthEOnFor the uninitiated, the G.I. Joe mythology runs deep and has a pantheon of characters to draw from, each with their own story and characteristics.

The filmmakers wanted to build on the elements and storylines from the first film and carry those through while simultaneously creating a new feel. This offered the opportunity to introduce new characters from the mythology.

actIOn MORE REal In 3DThe addition of 3D to the film brings it into a whole new playing field. It’s something

the studios and the director were eager to see.

“3D allows us to invite the audience into our movie. We span many different places around the world from Tokyo to Pakistan, to The Himalayas and, with 3D, we get to bring the audience into those environments. They get to experience the action as if they are right there,” says Chu.

He adds, “Dwayne Johnson's punches feel more powerful. You don't just witness Storm Shadow's blade-wielding, you actually get the feeling of ducking out of its way. The 3D just made our movie more fun for audiences around the world.”

Contemporary australian cuisine bistro Fordham & Grand is on Craig Road, along a row of shop houses. If you are as blur as I am, you’d walk past the wooden door twice before you find it.

The 45-seater bistro and bar is a cosy and intimate setting, perfect for a date night out without the kids. Open from 6pm to 3am daily, you can come here at midnight for a snack if you wish. Their chef has honed his skills at restaurants such as Joel Robuchon and Santi.

Owners Timothy Lim and Tron Young based Fordham & Grand on a street intersection in the Bronx, which is one of New York City’s most colourful areas.

“We liken the vibrancy of this street to the way we run our first establishment – with verve and passion. We also love how the name sounds and rolls off the tongue,” says Tron.

Their Green Pea Risotto with Zucchini Flower and Parmesan ($24) was a brilliant twist with green puree, crispy fried zucchini flowers and grilled zucchini slices. If you are hankering for a bangers and mash of sorts, partake in the Glazed Chicken with Pork Sausage and Mortar Potato ($26) – a plump Kurobuta banger and savoury-sweet glazed chicken thigh fillet with a generous serving of potatoes.

Fordham & Grand has tempting desserts such as French Toast with Dark Rum Sabayon ($15), in which the sweet brioche bread is soaked with egg, cream and sugar, baked and then brulee-d with sugar and served with dark rum sabayon, vanilla ice cream and chocolate sand. This is definitely the most incredible pain perdu I’ve ever tasted.

The bistro also has a fully-stocked bar with cocktails and

signature treats served in unique ways. Le Café Cocktail ($16) looks deceivingly like a cup of coffee but is really a frothy concoction of Courvoisier VS Cognac, port wine and egg yolk with cognac and grand marnier jelly that resembles sugar cubes.

Men who love pina coladas can drink them in peace here, as it comes cunningly disguised in a beer mug. No comments about drinking ladies’ drinks will be made.

The Bikini, a ham, cheese and truffle sandwich, is one of the most popular. It is the only one to have been sold out, twice! Taste and see what the hype is about.

saFe, easy, convenient, duRableNow, you will have nothing to worry about with Ez Living Pte Ltd’s range of home products for clothing-related housework or chores. Ez Living’s range of EZ products is time-tested, safe, convenient and durable.

The Ez Living Hi-Dry system caters to these needs for all users, especially in the important aspect of safety. Those who may not be tall or strong enough to balance a heavy, laundry-laden pole out of a window will have nothing to fear and never have to put themselves at risk again.

Ez Living’s clothesline systems not only greatly ease the difficulty of laundry hanging, its systems are smartly-designed to retract to a wall or ceiling, thereby saving precious space in a flat. Drying laundry by the sun also greatly conserves energy, and is environmentally friendly, unlike using an electrical tumble dryer, for instance.

diveRsiFyinG the PRoductsEz Living’s various clothesline models fit most yard and kitchen configurations, window openings and ceiling heights. More than that, Angeline constantly believes there is always room

for improvement, and has been looking into her company’s research and development of products.

For condominiums where high ceilings and false ceilings make the use of traditional poles unusable and impractical, Ez Living Pte Ltd expanded its range to include retractable laundry systems for such particular constraints.

With the aging population rising, Ez Living has also considered this segment and included the Automated EZ Bella system from Korea. The Bella system can be operated by remote control, giving even greater convenience, ease and safety.

Not surprisingly, Ez Living’s clothesline systems are sought after, not only by condominiums but even commercial institutions such as staff quarters, dormitoriess and hostels.

Ez Living’s range of products currently include: EZ Hi-Dry, EZ Lift, EZ Retractable, EZ Foldaway, EZ Foldown, Artweger drying racks, EZ Mobile Ironing Board, and EZ Wall Mount Ironing Board.

My spacecraft has just landed on Earth. Not much is known about my species but I hear

that we look intimidating to the human species.

I came to see those elaborate, circular patterns created on crops such as wheat and barley when they get flattened. Earthlings call them ‘crop circles’, or ‘crop formations’. In case you belong to the ignorant portion of the general populace of Earth, to inform you, there are about 26 countries having reported almost 10,000 crop circles in the late

takE OvERCrop CirCles have long baffled sCientists and sCi-fi enthusiasts. our reporter speaks to an alien who has just landed in singapore. this is what he/she/it shared with us

by Chia hui jun

In case you didn’t know, aliens do normal human things like go on dates too! One of the best places to meet single aliens is the newfangled Marina Bay Sands. We love the rocket-shaped part on top of the three towers, and the powerful beams of light emanating from the three towers can reach outer space. That’s one of the ways we gather data from Earth.

However, top secret information is encrypted, and transmitted by wavelengths that even the most sophisticated of devices cannot detect. Yes, I know, we are cool that way.

Other great alien hangout places also include satellite stations, what you call the new Supreme Court [which is actually a spacecraft] and Fort Canning, where there are a lot of secluded spots. Hey, we get frisky too.

Unknown to Singaporeans, one of our hidden colonies is underwater in MacRitchie Reservoir. We often gather there together to keep ourselves from missing our watery home. What stops us from being spotted and hence terminated, is our ability to mimic human beings. It is amazing, though, how no one finds people who walk around fixated by their electronic gadgets abnormal.

Many of our motherships - these huge circular discs with armour-lookalike exteriors - have already landed in Singapore. Some of us go for tours to get to know this planet better. I’ll probably take one of those quaint Duck Tours soon. In fact, that is where many alien couples meet.

20th Century. Most of these crop

circles occurred in Southern England, near monuments such as Stonehenge. These crop formations are simply created when parts of the crops are tamped down but other parts are left intact. The edges are clean, and some consist of interconnecting geometric shapes. Humans have been puzzled by how these are done without any marks left by their makers, all within one night.

Earthlings are a curious and amusing bunch. They have many explanations for this phenomenon, ranging from weather changes, folklore, UFOs (that’s us!), top secret military experiments,

hoaxes, earth-bound microwave, lasers, GPS, and even marsupials which run in circles when they get high on opium-laden poppy fields. I know who the ones who are trippy are.

In 1991, pranksters Dave Chorley and Doug Bower took credit for them, saying that they’ve been creating crop circles since 1971 by using wooden planks and barrels. I heard that a researcher in Oregon said that GPS monitors are used to place the shapes, and magnetrons (tubes using electricity and

magnetism to generate high heat) cause the crop stalks to fall over at high speeds.

Now, a historian from Tasmania is saying that crop circles that were present in 1945 prove that crop circles are not a modern hoax. These humans really can’t make up their minds. It’s obvious who the superior life form is.

Some say the sheer size and geometric precision of these crop patterns can only be made by us extraterrestrial species, or alien spaceships. Well, my spacecraft did kind of flatten a few things when I landed...

A cottage industry has emerged around the circles, with clubs and books devoted to the study of crop circles. Archaeologists, physicists, and researchers have been baffled by crop circles for ages. Haha, sometimes it is amusing looking at human beings scramble around like confused ants.

In the early 1990s, a UK arts collective named Circlemakers created crop circles for artistic purposes, and for commercial clients as well. Aeronautical graduate students from MIT also have duplicated it, and there has even been a crop circles competition. What will these humans think of next?

In other parts of the world, we have publicly indicated our presence, such as in this tiny country called Singapore. In 2007, we sent bursts of green streaks across the skies, with a blue and light glow. Truth be told, that incident was more of an engine malfunction. Nonetheless, predictably, the president of the Astronomical Society of Singapore issued a statement saying that those were actually meteors which were a hundred times brighter. I know who the Men in Black have gotten to.

Frankly, humans are taking up so much space in the world. Many of them think that our purpose is to get rid of them and to dominate their world but, in fact, we are a peace-loving species. We simply desire to co-exist peacefully with humans and share public facilities. The concept of a flush-toilet is alien to us.

I will soon be taking my findings back to my home planet but maybe I’ll leave my mark on some crop circles too before leaving. W

ChrisToFle JArDin D’eDenLaunched in 2010, the Jardin d’Eden silverware collection brought a modern touch to the notion of preciousness, poetry and sensuality. While remaining true to its signature purity of line, Christofle entrusted the creation of this decorative collection to Marcel Wanders, a renowned designer known for extravagance and whimsy.

The result lived up to expectations, in a vibrant homage to nature engraved on silver with interlaced leaves, flowers and curls inspired by a lush garden.

In 2013, the Jardin d’Eden collection will expand to include a fruit bowl and a new tray. Pastry trays, coasters, as well as a salt and pepper set round up this collection of silver table accessories. The collection is also extending further into the home with a line of decorative objects

and home accessories including a letter opener, a paperweight and photo frames.

The engraving is embossed. It is the result of a complex, precise and delicate procedure that depends on the way in which the silversmith places a metal leaf on the matrix and stamps it to define its shape and décor. Upon close inspection, the modern take on baroque engraving reveals its secrets: it is composed of a blend of a finely granulated texture, a flat finish and latticework.

Subtly scent your home with the Pomegranate Grove Home Fragrance Reed Diffuser (200ml, $88), Fragranced Candle ($45) or Home Fragrance Spray (100ml, $30), all offering a crisp and fruity fragrance of tartly sweet accented with a burst of citrusy Clementine blossom and fresh fig leaf.

Decorate your coffee table with a potpourri such as the Pomegranate Grove Fragrance Botanicals with Home Fragrance Oil ($68), which consists of a visually interesting blend of rolled barks, twigs and cinnamon.

Simply place them into a glass bowl and sprinkle the fragrance oil to raise the scent according to your comfort level, and marvel at this conversation piece drawing guests like bees to honey.

ArigATo by lAlineThe Arigato range is deeply infused with the warm coastal scent of Japanese cedar wood – to bring warmth to the heart. Mixed together with the top note of tangerine-infused orchid and amber, the range leads you on a trail of charm and allure.

The Scented Candle is one of the best ways to create a romantic ambience – allowing the scent to be dispersed naturally. Just sit back and relax, and enjoy quality time with your loved one. The Room Spray is an instant and emphatic way to relieve stress with a pleasing scent. Gently spray upward toward the centre of the room, but be careful not to spray to much as the coconut fragrance can be too overpowering.

Another option is the Fragrance Diffuser. The natural essential oils calm the senses – perfect for relaxing on a weekend afternoon. Simply insert the fragrance stick into the bottle of essential oils for 24 to 36 hours. When the end becomes dry, simply reverse them, exposing the saturated ends.

Running 150 minutes with moderate intensity in a day reaps almost the same health benefits as running 30 to 45 minutes five times a week, research shows. This defies the myth that running has to be frequent in order to reap health benefits.

What does moderate intensity mean? Being able to speak short sentences comfortably while exercising indicates moderate intensity, says Dr Ong Joo Haw from the Sports Medicine, Orthopaedic Surgery Department in Khoo Teck Puat Hospital.

TyPes oF RunningOne can choose from a few different types of running – recovery runs, base runs, long runs, and progressive runs. A recovery run, also known as jogging, is a relatively short run performed at an easy pace, while a base run is a relatively short to moderate-length run done at a runner’s natural pace.

Triathlete Mok Ying Ren recommends that joggers keep it easy and allow their bodies to determine the pace. “Leave your

Running tips

watch behind and look around at your surroundings,” he says.

Progressive runs, or tempo runs, are slightly faster than a runner’s natural pace. For example, select a loop course such as at Bedok Reservoir, warm up for 15 minutes, and then run two to three laps around the loop, going faster with each lap.

On the other hand, a long run increases raw endurance and lasts long enough to leave a runner moderately to severely fatigued. Those who are training for races can vary their distance and duration accordingly.

If you are training for a marathon, run for two to three hours comfortably at an easy pace; for a 10km race, runs of up to 60 to 90 minutes would suffice.

“Vary the distance and duration of the runs, running speed, frequency of sessions and the terrain’s incline, as these build running speed, endurance and tolerance for hilly conditions,” says Dr Ong.

Ying Ren says that treadmill running removes the wind factor, and less effort is needed as the

road moves under your feet. There are advantages to

training outdoors. The training environment is harsher and more varied, increasing one’s fitness level and allowing one to adapt to different weather conditions.

RouTine and TechniqueIf you want to start a recreational running routine, Hollie Avil, a coach at MetaSport, recommends starting with 15-minute base runs to get used to the feel of running before building it up slowly over time. After that, you can begin progression or other types of runs.

There are several elements of a good running technique - run tall, lean forward slightly, engage your core, move your arms in a forward motion, keep shoulders relaxed, look ahead to the horizon, and land mid-foot. Try to run three to four times a week, and do stretching exercises before.

Experts encourage a mix of runs each week, with easy jogs after days of long runs. The cardiovascular system develops faster than the muscular system so, while the heart and lungs may feel good, the muscles lag.

If you feel any aches or discomfort, take a few days off

or do easy runs to allow your muscles to adapt and to get stronger. Rest periods allow the body to make adjustments for increased levels of fitness.

healTh TiPsTo get the full benefits of exercise, one should maintain a balanced diet, get sufficient sleep, and avoid alcohol and smoking, as the former is a diuretic and the latter affects lung function, Dr Ong advises.

If you are above 35 years old or lead a sedentary lifestyle, or have known medical problems or musculoskeletal concerns, seek medical advice. Dr Ong cautions against over-training as it can result in injuries and decreased immunity.

For cardiovascular health and other benefits, head out for a jog today.

"I wanted to bring my own version of menswear and my own vision to the industry" he says.

With over 2,000 choices of fabrics sourced from Italian and Swiss mills, there is plenty to choose from. While you are at it, get a pair of bespoke leather or suede shoes that are handmade by craftsmen in Hong Kong.

“Most consultations take at least half an hour for decisive men. The longest I ever took was three hours for eight shirts!" he says.

He also provides styling tips to clients to help bring out the full potential of the suit. He has even had a movie-buff doctor ask for a Sherlock Holmes coat.

"Most of my clients are PMEBs, bankers, lawyers and creative types and their suit tastes differ according to their profession," says Han San.

He adds, "Men are getting more metrosexual and are willing to go for slimmer cuts, bolder colours. Once they find something they like, they stick to it. So I have a fair client base of regulars."

One of the major errors he sees men commit with suits would be having much too long sleeves and fall length. Another would be mismatched jacket and pants.

"You can't have a black jacket and a charcoal pair of pants. It just looks like you made a mistake. Contrasting colours like orange jacket and black pants are fine," he says.

Q Menswear's bespoke outfits start from about $860. They also stock accessories such as ties, lapel pins and even military decorations.

“Bespoke is individual and shows the soul and characteristics of the wearer," says Han San. W
