AIM OF THE SKILLThis chapter mainly deals with the behaviour of the ball if when kicked at a particular point on it. The ball can be kicked on top, middle or at the bottom and each time there will be a different effect. Understanding this will be key in executing the skills which you will be learning in the due course.

THE BALL BEHAVIOUR - I

When the ball is struck hard from the top through to the bottom it will give the shot a dip effect. When the power from the strike decreases the ball spins forward, falling rapidly to the ground. This is an excellent way to beat a wall at free kicks as the ball should clear the wall then dip towards the goal.

When the ball is struck hard at the bottom – Used for chipping and striking the ball high over long distances.

THE BALL BEHAVIOUR - III

When you hit the side of the ball only it will swerve or bend to the left or right.

THE BALL BEHAVIOUR - IV

The middle of the ball is struck for medium-length mid-height passes and shots. The ball will stay low and can be hit with great power in this area.

AIM OF THE SKILLThe aim of the skill is all about the aim of football – to kick the ball. Many of us have seen some wonderful goals, beautiful passes, long range volleys etc. All this begin with a power touch known as ‘kick’. If you aren't kicking then you aren't playing football. In the next few slides let us look and learn how to execute the most elementary part of this beautiful game.

BASICS OF KICKING - IOne of the most common

error a beginner does is to kick the ball from the toe (Refer fig) Kicking with the toe, you will have no control as to where the ball would go. In addition, you risk yourself from injuring your toe – Not what you require.

AVOID KICKING FROM

YOUR TOE

BASICS OF KICKING - IIThe correct place to kick the

ball is from the lace side as shown in the figure. If you look at the videos of many footballers closely, you will see that they all kick the ball from the lace spot. Ensure you practice this well.

BASICS OF KICKING - III

If you want to be sending a cross while you are kicking, try kicking from the spot as shown in the figure. This ensures you get a good curve on the ball.

BASICS OF KICKING - IVIn order to play short passes

– Refer the fig to kick the ball from the side of your foot. This gives you a better control of the passes you make.

BASICS OF KICKING - V

While kicking the ball, if your body is leaning forward then the ball usually remains low and is used for low effective drives. If your body is leaning backwards, you will be lofting the ball into the air.

BASICS OF KICKING - VI

While kicking the ball, your non-kicking foot determines which way the ball will go. (REMEMBER THIS!!!)If your kicking leg is right – then your left leg points or which ever your left leg points, the ball goes in that direction. Vice- versa for left footers.

LEG POSITION Having a proper leg position is the important step of the process. You can kick the ball, touch the ball depending on what is required. Kicking leg can be brought as high as possible, depending on the power. Higher the kicking leg, more power it can generate. While the kicking leg is taken care, there are parts of your body which must also be in sync – like ankle, knee, hips and the finale ‘feet’ to give direction to the ball.

ANKLE POSITION

Keep your non-kicking ankle rested to the ground. This adds to your composure and gives you a stable stance to kick the ball.Remember to lock your ankle!!!

KNEE POSITIONYour plant (non-kicking foot) knee should be slightly bent. This will ensure that you strike the ball with the laces. The more you bend the knee the more chances you'll have to strike the ball with your laces.

PLANT DISTANCETry to keep your plant leg about a foot or a foot and a half away from the ball. This will ensure that when you strike the ball your kicking ankle will be at a 45 degree angle: the angle at which you'll generate the most amount of power.

BODY POSITIONIf you lean forward, it will ensure your shot will stay low to the ground. If you lean back, the ball will go up in the air.

45 DEGREE POSITION

This is extremely important. If this is not done correctly your shooting will not improve. Your ankle needs to be at about a 45 degree angle so that you can strike the ball with your laces. If you are not at this angle there is a high chance that you will strike the ball with you toes.Always remember – Never to kick the ball with your toes!!!

DID YOU KNOWA league was formed in the Netherlands in 1889, but professionalism arrived only in 1954. Germany completed its first national championship season in 1903, but the Bundesliga, a comprehensive and fully professional national league, did not evolve until 60 years later.

DRILL This is for working on your instep kicks all by yourself. If you have a blank wall or a strong fence, then this is all you need. Mark it with chalk X’s at various heights Set the ball down about 10 feet away, make your approach and kick to one of the targets. When the ball bounces back, dribble it into place, and make another approach, this time aiming for a new X. Continue the drill as long as you wish, making sure that every X receives a kick. You can vary the distance and direction and kick the ball to targets.
