WalksforYoungPeopleontheViaAlpina

WithintheframeworkoftheViaAlpinaProject–Viadventure(ViaAlpinaDevelopment Venture), the Province of Belluno, has identified a series of objectivestobereachedintheprovince;oneofthese,incollaborationwiththeVenetoSectionoftheItalianAlpineClub,isthedevelopmentofhigh-qualitytourismandeducationalproposalsaimedatyoungpeople.Withthisinmind,insummer2006,theProvincialAdministrationlentitssupporttoaninternationalfurthereducationseminar“Youngpeopleandthemountains”,aimedatmountaineeringguideswhoaccompanyyoungclimbers belonging to the various mountaineering associations of the68nationswhicharemembersoftheInternationalMountaineeringandClimbingFederation.InadditiontotheproductionofaCD-romcontai-ningthetopicsdiscussedandelaborateduponduringtheseminar,thePilotProjectincludesplansforthesettingup,onthepartoftheItalianAlpineClub,ofaseriesof20educationaleventsaimedatpresentingtheViaAlpinainschoolsintheVenetoRegion,aswellastheorganizationof10educationalhikingtripstoexploretheViaAlpinaandtheAlteVieHighMountainRoutes.Thisbookletformspartofthisproject,anditsaimistosuggestanum-berofroutesinordertohelpyoungpeopletogettoknowtheBellunoDolomitesandthehostofplacesofhistorical,culturalandnaturalisticinteresttheyhavetooffer.

Thedescriptionsandtimesrequiredforeachhikingitineraryaremerelyindicative.Beforetacklinganyofthosesuggestedinthisbooklet,hikersshouldcontactthetourist offices indicated for information on the conditions of the route and to obtain asuitabletopographicalmapofthearea.Mountainhikingbooksandappropriateclothingarerequired,anditshouldbepointedoutthattheremaynotalwaysbetheopportunitytoreplenishwatersuppliesalongtheroutes.

1 - Tita Pòa Botanic Path in Lozzo di Cadore

TheTitaPòaBotanicPathcaneasilybereachedfromthecentreofLoz-zo, and nature lovers will find plen-

tytoadmireandenjoyalongtheroute,whichiswell-indicatedandprovidedwithexcellent,informativesignsandpanels.

It is advisable to start out near thechildren’sparkatPianizòle:thisplea-santroute,whichcanbecoveredin

around an hour, runs for about 1400metreson the slopesof thewoodland,where the steep forest path levels outonto the flat after a few metres. The fragrant Norway spruce forest alter-nates along the way with humid areascharacterized by ferns, field horsetail andwildhemp;abriefstopinthesha-deoftheancientash,beechandhazeltreesandoffyougoagainthroughthepasturelandstowardsthecharacteristic,solitary tabià, with their stables andbalconiesburstingwithhay.Theheadyscentoforchids,woodanemoneandSo-lomon’s ring flowers fills the whole path frombeginningtoend,andvisitorswillfind attractive wooden signs indicating thepresenceofthevariousplantspeciestobefoundalongtheway.Returntothedeparturepointalongthesameroute.

TheVal d’Oten is one of themostspectacular, mysterious places inthe whole of the Cadore area. It

liesbetweentheMarmaroleandtheAn-telao,andallowsthehikertoreachtrulyenchanting places of immense naturalbeauty. One such place is the Cascatadelle Pile Waterfall. Legend has it that“Pile”, thebrideof themightyAntelao,fell victim to an evil spell which trans-formed her into a waterfall dashingdownamidtherocksoftheGravina.

To reach the waterfall, it is advis-able todriveor takeabusalongtheroadfromCalalzodiCadoreto

“Praciadelan”, followingthesignsforthe“Val d’Oten”. This is the starting pointforthehikealongtheItalianAlpineClubpath no. 255, which leads towards theCapanna degli Alpini Refuge, and just alittlefurtheron,tothewaterfall.Itiseasytoreach,thankstoapathequippedwithstepsandfootbridgeswhichwilltakeyousafelydownto the footof thewaterfall.Ifyoucontinueonbeyondthewaterfall,at an altitude of 2018m you will reachthe Galassi Refuge, while from Praciad-elan,pathno.260leadstotheChiggiatoRefuge.Youcanreturntothedeparturepoint by retracing your steps along thesameroute.

3 - Ancient Strada Regia (Royal Way) from San Vito to Venas di Cadore

BeforetheAlemagnaRoadwasbuiltin1832,theStradaRegialinkedtheVenetoplainwiththeTyrol.Inthe

MiddleAges,theroadwasbusywithcar-riagesandpackmuleswhichtransportedgoods,suchasItalianwine,towardsGer-many.Duringperiodsofheavysnowfallitwas particularly difficult to transfer goods fromonecarriagetoanother.TodaytheStradaRegia isapopularwalkingrouteamid the fields on the left of the Boite Torrent,andoffers superbviewsof thevalley.

ItisadvisabletosetoutfromSanVitodiCadore,andheadtowardsSerdes;ifyougoalongViaVillanova,aroad

on the right leadsoff up to abeautiful

clearing with fine views of the Pelmo and the Antelao. From here, continuetowardsBorcadiCadorealongVia O.Sala, where you will find signs and pan-els indicating the route tobe followed.Some spectacular scenery, with lovelylittle churches and daring bridges, canbeadmiredalongtheroad,whichleadsto a fork with the carriage road whichruns from Cibiana to Venas di Cadore.Aftergoingupthisroadfor1km,youre-turnontothemainroad(Venas-Cibianafork), where the route ends; to returntothedeparturepoint,youcantakethebuswhichrunsfromVenasbacktoSanVito (Info.: San Vito di Cadore TouristOffice 0436 9119).

tific point of view. On the rock of a huge boulderyoucanseeperfectly-preserveddinosaur footprints dating back to theTriassicage,whichcametolightwhenaseriesofenormousrockscamecrashingdownfromthePelmetto.Inanagedur-ingwhichtheoceansbathedthefootofourmountains,someoftheseprehistoricreptiles leftbehind tracesof their exist-enceinthesoil.

ItisadvisabletosetofffromtheStaulan-za Pass and follow the Italian AlpineClubpathnumber472inthedirection

oftheVeneziaRefuge.Afterjustoverhalfanhour’s pleasantwalk youwill reach asign indicating “Orme dei dinosauri” (Di-nosaurtracks);turnlefthereontoasteepslopewhichwill take you in just a shorttime up to the site (continuing on fromhere,onpathnumber472,willtakeyoutotheVeneziaRefugeinaboutanhour).Par-ticularcareandattentionarerequiredonthe final part of this route, which is difficult asaresultofthesteepslopeandslipperysurface.You can return to thedeparturepointbyretracingyoursteps.

5 - Mondevàl Man

Journey to the Mesolithic site ofMondevàl,wheretheburialsiteofahunterdatingback6000yearswas

found by Vittorino Cazzetta of Selva diCadore. The site of this important ar-chaeologicaldiscoverynestles inoneofthemostbeautifullandscapesintheDo-lomites,inthemunicipalityofSanVitodiCadore,apopulardestinationwithmanyhikers.

It is advisable to set out from theGiau Pass and walk along the Ital-ian Alpine Club Path number 436.

GoacrosstheForcellaZoniaSaddleandcontinue.Thispartof thepathrequiresparticular attention,with two especiallydifficult stretches. After you cross a large glacialdepression,asteepstretchleadsup to the Forcella Giau Saddle. Admir-ing along the way the Dolomite peakswhichencircle thenaturalamphitheatreofMondevàl,godownbeneaththerock

wallsoftheLastonidiFormin,leftofthecharming littleBasteLake.Justbeyondhere,ontherightyouwillseethewestsideoftherockwhichguardstheburialsitewhereMondevàlManwasfound.Onthewayback,youcanreachtheCase-ra Mondevàl hut, visible from the areaaroundtherock,andhalfwayupthehill-side,goroundBasteLakeandbackontotheForcellaGiauSaddle,whereyoucanrejoin the route back to the departurepoint.

7 - Cherz Plateau and Pieve di Livinallongo

TheCherz Plateau is a naturalwin-dow out over the Dolomites, andoffers ample grassland, ideal for a

relaxing stop.Theplateau is the centralpointofaninterestingitineraryforanyonewhoenjoysthesceneryoftheDolomitesandwantstoenterintothetypical,char-acteristicenvironment inwhich the localpeoplelive,anenvironmentwhichisim-menselyrichinhistoryandinLadinculture.

It is advisable to start out from theStrada delleDolomiti Road, betweenLivinèandPezzei, in themunicipality

of Livinallongo. The route goes up to-wardsthehamletofCorte(whichyoucanalsoreachbycar),whereyoucanseetheruinsoftheoldAustrianfortandthelit-tlevillagechurch,andmovesontowardsContrin.Here,youcomeoffthelittleroadand go along a path which leads first to-wardsthe“LaCiasota”and“Incisa”Ref-uges, and from there on the left to thesuperb Cherz Plateau, where you will find

ThePordoiPassisoneofthemostim-portantmountainpassesintheDo-lomitesandformspartofthefamous

“StradadelleDolomiti”Road,designedin1909bytheAustrianimperialarmy.Origi-nally conceived for military reasons, thisroad,whichlinksCortinaD’AmpezzowithBolzano, made a significant contribution to thesuccessfuldevelopmentoftourisminthearea.

Itisadvisabletosetofffromthetopofthepass,wherethereisplentyofpark-ingspace,tovisitthePordoiPassWar

Memorial,whichyoucanreachbywalkingalonganotparticularlysteeproadforjustoveranhour,enjoyingextraordinaryviewsofthevalleyontheway.Thehugememo-rialchapel,situatedatanaltitudeof2239metres, has an octagonal-shaped keepandawidecircularbasecomposedoftworings. The memorial is open to visitors,andconservestheremainsoftheAustro-

HungariantroopskilledinWWIaswellasthoseof400Wehrmachtsoldierswhodiedin WWII. From the surrounding fields you can admire a fine landscape which ranges fromtheSasBecètotheSassoCappello,from the Mesola down towards the bot-tomof theValcordevole.Behindyou riseuptherockybastionsoftheSellamassif,whichseemstowatchoverthememorial.To return to thedeparture point, retraceyoursteps.
