“I’m grateful to the people who showed up, it was a great turnout,” Mr Bartlett says

This year’s commemorations were doubtful following the clo-sure of the RSA in 2013 but, with a group of determined locals, it all went ahead.

“It was a lot of hard work because of the timing of the event…I am thankful to all that helped along the way,” Mr Bartlett says.

He says the best thing was see-ing the amount of young people who turned up.

“It shows that they are interested about what is happening,” Mr Bartlett says.

In his speech last Friday, Mr Bartlett said that out of the 200 residents that were living in Wainuiomata at the time of World War One, just over 20 of them went to war; with fi ve losing their lives while at war.

Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace was also very impressed the loy-

alty of the Wainuiomata residents that came out to support their lo-cal Anzac Day commemorations.

“It’s good considering the RSA had a couple of problems over the last few years, well done to everyone that worked on it,” Mr Wallace says.

“The dawn service was great as well, all power to Bart he has done really well,” he says.

Peter Loader, who led the pa-rade this year, agreed with what Mr Wallace and Mr Bartlett said about crowd numbers.

“It was very impressive. All the turnouts have been good, every year. I love the kids turning up, they always want to learn about it [Anzac Day],” Mr Loader says.

This year’s parade was Mr Loader’s fourteenth time leading the parade. It is something he has done since he went to Gallipoli in 2000.

“Anyone that wants to go should go; it’s an experience of a life time, very worthwhile,” Mr Loader says.

The Petone Arena is one of the special projects proposed in the Hutt City Council’s draft annual plan.Council sta� members have outlined it to be a major community facility and investment for Hutt City residents. It has been asked by The Commu-nity Facilities Trust (CFT) to consider including a funding provision of $25m for the development of the Petone Arena, but this is subject to a number of conditions.Should there be satisfactory com-munity support, council may decide to undertake a more detailed analysis of the business case and the CFT will investigate consenting issues. Hutt City Council is calling for submis-sions from residents.

Residents have shown they are behind their local Community Patrol Wainuio-mata by supporting them through this year’s Good in the Hood campaign run through Z stations around the country.

While last year the community or-ganisation received about $1350 which covered its general expenses, this year $978 was raised.

Good in the Hood is an initiative to help local neighbourhoods, support-ing the things that matter locally and making a positive contribution around the country.

Each year, Z stations give neighbour-hood groups a share of $4000 to do ‘good in the hood.’ From thousands of applications, four are selected with members of the community deciding where the money goes by voting in their local service station.

Community Patrol Wainuiomata coordinator Mike Rosser is pleased the community got behind it for another year and says the support is needed.

At present, more than 20 people are involved through volunteering time to help protect the community and its residents, with about 12 people out patrolling at any one time.

“It’s great that our community, both in Wainuiomata and Seaview, support us,” Mr Rosser says.

Local patrols have been surveying the whole community for more than 10 years, running day and night routines. Community Patrol Wainuiomata has also started monitoring Seaview.

As part of the 2014 Good in the Hood campaign, Community Patrol Wainuiomata came second equal and raised substantial funds to support it getting a new patrol vehicle – with a portion going towards general expenses once again.

supported these organisations this year.

“We’re humbled to support them,” he says.

The community patrol placed second equal with Coastguard Wel-lington, while Wellington @ Heart came fi rst with $1379 donated. Last, but not least, was the Royal New Zealand Foundation of the Blind that received $666.

Groups in Wainuiomata are coming together to help keep young people oc-cupied throughout the month of May.

In a combined effort by Kokiri Marae Health Centre, Wainuiomata Community Centre and a number of local Maori wardens, another Wainuiomata Youth Project has been organised.

This is the third time the group has created a Youth Week like this, with the fi rst being in 2012.

Lizzie Raukawa, from Kokiri Marae Health Centre, says the success of the program is why it keeps going.

“It was so popular in 2012 that we had to keep it going in 2013 and the same with this year,” Ms Raukawa says.

Organisers have put the success of the event down to the children themselves.

“It’s driven by them, it goes by what they want, if they want to do something we will do that,” Ms Raukawa says.

She says they have been contacting the police and fi re service to see if they want to set up stalls showcasing what they do in the community.

“We have approached people from all around the community, trying to build up correspondence between the businesses and the community,” Ms Raukawa says.

The event runs throughout each day of the week, no matter what the weather. If it is raining they just move everything inside, she says.

Youth Week creates fun for locals

Wainuiomata children had plenty to do around the Hutt Valley these school holidays, with both the local com-munity centre and library hosting activities.

The library has held a number of events including ‘Stickdown Town’ and ‘In ya Face’.

“The programmes are de-signed for five to 12 year olds,” says library assistant Vera Pazan.

“Hopefully this will en-courage them to read books,” she says.

Last week’s ‘Sticktown Town’ event involved chil-dren learning about crazy buildings and structures around the world, giving them the chance to create some wacky structures.

She says these activities involve children making things they can take home to their families.

“Children like to do things that are hands on, stuff they can show their families,” Ms Pazan says.

The library is working with the community centre throughout the holidays. Pro-grammes are held by these organisations every school holidays throughout the year.

“It’s good that we are work-ing together with these pro-jects, it is something we have wanted to do for a few years now,” Ms Pazan says.

The Community Centre is holding a holiday pro-gramme in the second week of the break.

Both programmes will keep children entertained and will continue until school resumes for term two.

Easter celebrations were held around Wainuiomata recently, with a number of residents coming together for the festivities and choco-late.The neighbourhood and resi-dents of Aporoa, Orewa and

Ngaturi groves, and Parenga St had an Easter street bar-beque on Sunday.Wainuiomata resident Grae-me Biddle says everyone had a good time and they were very lucky with the weather on the day.

Discussions as to whether or not there is a problem with the number of pokie machines in Wainuiomata were made public at a recent Hutt City Council policy and regulatory committee meeting.

In 2013, New Zealanders spent $821 million on pokies, with more than $25 million spent in Hutt City alone.

Between June and September 2013, the total expenditure on pokies in Wainuiomata was $858,639.

The Gambling Act 2003 re-quires councils to review their gambling policy every three

years. Since the review in 2010, the number of pokie venues in Hutt City has fallen from 39 to 37 and the number of machines have gone from 545 to 529.

Council’s current plan is to keep the number of pokies at below 545, but offi cers are reviewing the policy.

Representatives from the com-mittee have outlined a preference of transferring pokie licences and relocation machines from areas such as Wainuiomata and Stokes Valley, to more affl uent parts of the Hutt Valley. A sug-gestion was also made towards the council possibly looking at

allowing no new machines in certain areas of the city.

In a report to the policy and regulatory committee, council advisors stated gambling of some form is a common activity in New Zealand; with 52 percent of adults who participated in the 2011/12 New Zealand Health Survey indicated they had gam-bled in the past year.

It was also noted that most people who gamble do not experience any addiction prob-lems however some do produce other dependencies and health problems.

“Problem gambling has

been associated with domestic violence, alcohol abuse, theft, bankruptcy, poor employment performance and poor mental health,” the report said.

So far a number of options have been created and voiced in terms the policy change, listing the pros and cons of each.

The public and council will work together during the con-sultation process, with decisions based on exiting budgets.

TAB venues around the city are owned and operated by the New Zealand Racing Board and do not fall under the council policy.

Council to decide number of pokies in city

Artists from around the country have been collaborating creations this month as part of the Hutt Valley’s Our Space project run by Close To My Heart – an organisation for individu-als to enhance their artistic talents.

Wainuiomata’s Denise Anglesey, from Denise H, created a number of upcycled and recycled items of clothing for the project, with Lower Hutt’s Patricia Manhire joining with her paper crafts and greeting cards.

Other artists included Upper Hutt’s mixed media artist Number 5, artist Freda Lobb, and jewellery and gift creators The Pewter Hutt.

Kruizey Kidz from Hamilton also made an appearance throughout the month long project, creating baby and children’s clothing for the Hutt-based craft events.

Christchurch-based Threadalicious was present for the event, alongside Kaz Designs from Thames and Square 9 from the Kapiti Coast.

Events were held on High St at various times between Friday, April 11, and Wednesday, April 30.

The Our Space project was a craft event collaborating handmade styled and designed items.

New Zealanders are a crafty bunch


Doctors are here to help us when we are sick, now it is time for us to help them.

Hutt City Health Care Wainuio-mata has to move out of their current premises on The Strand at the end of May and the race is on to fi nd a new practice.

General practitioner Sandy Dawson says that they are doing everything they can to try and stay in Wainuio-mata.

“The current landlord is wishing to sell up, so we are working round the clock to fi nd other suitable premises,” Mr Dawson says.

He says they are looking for a place that is accessible for people with good parking and big enough so they have room for everything they need.

“It doesn’t have to be as big as before but it has to be convenient, that is the main thing,” Mr Dawson says.

If the healthcare centre does have to close, its patients may have to go over to the practice in Lower Hutt.

“At the moment both people can go to either practice, but only having the one would only be the fall back,” Mr Dawson says.

He says they prefer to rent as they do not want to owe money on a building

Doctors looking for help

when they want to focus on delivering health care.

“We enjoy doing what we do in Wainuiomata, we are not leaving any stone un-turned in trying to fi nd a new place,” Mr Dawson says.

The practice officials are interested in hearing from anyone who may know of a place in Wainuiomata they

can move to.“We are pressured with

time, but we are certainly looking for some where to go,” he says.

The Blind Foundation desperately needs families to help out with its guide dog puppy development programme that runs throughout the country.

Families would temporarily adopt a puppy into their home as part of a one year commitment to be puppy guide dog walkers, caring for the

dog before it starts proper training.As part of the Labrador retrievers

learning to become certifi ed guide dogs, volunteers look after a dog in their fi rst 12 to 14 months; helping them get used to people and differ-ent environments.

The Foundation is looking to place about 120 puppies this year.

While a majority of people would love to have these adorable puppies roaming their homes there are restrictions on who can adopt.

People are advised not be in-volved in full-time work and that there must only be one pre-schooler living at home. Potential adoptees must also have a fully fenced

section. Representatives from the founda-

An interactive exhibition that refl ects on times past and contrasts those with more modern concepts has wrapped up in the Hutt valley today.

Supported by Wellington Access Radio, Lyriks Sports Academy and The War Memorial Library in Hutt City, Wainuiomata and Lower Hutt viewers were invited to connect with the images on display, sharing memories, thoughts and commentary.

The exhibition was called

Through Our Eyes and was a pho-tographic commentary by students from the Art and Cultural Studies Programme at Naenae’s Lyriks Sports Academy.

Work was on display from April 4 to April 30 and focused on concepts of street art, environment and social commentary from contrasting perspectives.

Three creations on display at the War Memorial Library in Lower Hutt were reproduced onto large photographic canvas murals for

the exhibition.The originals - ‘Their Sacrifi ce’

and ‘Preserved Freedom’ - were painted by Leonard Mitchell in 1956 to commemorate those who died in the fi rst and second world wars.

The third mural ‘Human En-deavour’ features 50 local fi gures that represent aspects of human endeavour including education, music, farming and commerce.

Through Our Eyes was on display along High St, Lower Hutt.

Development Wainuiomata is excited for its fast approaching third Business Breakfast of the year, set to be held next month.

While normally the breakfast event is held on the fi nal Friday of the month, April was different with Anzac Day falling on the last Friday and organisers deciding to move it to May 2.

The event caters for about 50 business professionals from around Wainuiomata who attend each month.

At each event a guest speaker is invited and May’s speaker is Stuart Larking – a man with many years in the Telecommunications industry.

Mr Larking is set to share his knowledge of smart phone and tablet technologies with a promise of no geek speak.

He will also explore applications that will increase productivity and time management within businesses, helping people fi nd out about new products coming onto the market.

Organisers are urging those who attend to bring their smart phones as there will be an interactive portion of the next breakfast.

May’s event is set to start at about 7am at the Louise Bilderbeck Hall, located on Main Road.

with an interest in acting are being sought after for the critically ac-claimed play, The Sound of Music - which opens in New Zealand theatres for two shows later this year.

Auditions for the tour started last week at the Michael Fowler Centre; but only 18 children from the 1000 children that have registered nationwide are set to be chosen at the end of the period.

Director Anton Luitingh began his search for New Zealand children to play the Von Trapps in Wellington last Tuesday, and those selected will be part of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s blockbuster stage production.

Following the selection process the chosen child actors will spend three days in Auckland with the Mr Luitingh testing their talents.

Producer James Cundall says this is an exciting opportunity for local talent to star in an international and West End blockbuster.

“We are looking for children to play six roles in this family musi-cal and encourage aspiring young actors and actresses of the right height to come along and audition,” Mr Cundall says.

The Sound of Music tells the story of Maria, the fun-loving govern-ess who changes the lives of the widowed Captain Von Trapp and his seven children by re-introducing them to music, culminating in the family’s escape across the mountains.

The show opens at the St James Theatre on September 12 and tickets go on sale in June.

Next month, Grey Power Wainuio-mata Association members will vote on who they want to lead the group for the coming year.

Current president Ken Salmon, who is standing down from his position later this year, says it would be very pleasing to get enough volunteers for a committee as well as a full team, including a president, vice-president, secretary and treasurer.

The association will be holding its annual general meeting on May 28, with the main focus around where the future lies for Grey Power in Wainuiomata.

“Nominations are needed to enable us to form a good, workable commit-tee,” Mr Salmon says.

“Many people shy at the word ‘com-mittee,’ in simple words, it is defi ned as ‘a group of people appointed or chosen to perform a function on behalf of a larger group.’ It is a team with various skills and abilities work-

encouraging the community to come along to meetings so they can see how the association operates.

The next meeting is on May 28, with the venue yet to be announced.

Changes to the Hutt South electorate boundaries will see Labour MP Trevor Mallard lose valuable voters ahead of the elections later this year.

The Hutt South MP believes he may have lost about half of his voters through the release of new draft boundaries re-cently.

As part of the changes the Lower Hutt suburb of Nae-nae is set to shift to Labour MP Chris Hipkins’ Rimutaka electorate.

Mr Mallard’s 2001 majority before the proposed changes was about 4800 however, this may now be around the 2000 mark.

Earlier this month, Mr Mal-lard says the boundary changes mean he welcomes Western Hills into the Hutt South elec-torate and that it was “sad to lose Naenae into Rimutaka.”

relationship with Johnsonville/Newlands,” Mr Mallard says.

The Hutt South MP believes the confi guration is logical as the alternatives would have been to split hills or put Hills into Rimutaka and Taita.

He says it was still better than the majority he inherited when he fi rst stood in the then Pencarrow position.

“The effect is to roughly

halve the Hutt South majority, currently 4825. When I fi rst ran here, the previous majority was only 384,” Mr Mallard says.

Comments about the changes were left on Mr Mallard’s Facebook page by support-ers, including one from Lisa McGregor who says that she was not impressed because she had voted for him for years.

While Ohariu MP Peter Dunne lost Korokoro and Maungaraki to Hutt South, the changes also see him pick up Wadestown from Wellington Central.

“I know the Western Hills pretty well. Friends and elec-torate committee members live there,” Mr Mallard says.

The representation commis-sion outlined there would also be 64 general and seven Maori electorate seats under the new boundaries that will apply for the next two elections.

This year’s general election is set to be held on Saturday, September 20.

Wainuiomata’s only gym is set to make the move to a bigger, and more prime location later this year.

Currently the Wainuiomata Way of Life Community Fitness Centre op-erates from next to the Parkway and Wainuiomata Hill Rd roundabout, in an approximately 600 metres-squared location.

With the move, the main focus was to reside in a bigger and more functional building; creating the op-portunity for the gym to grow, says owners Scott and Lynda MacKenzie.

The fitness centre’s new build-ing, currently undergoing major redevelopment, is situated close to the entrance of the shopping centre, inside the old post offi ce building.

Mr MacKenzie says the new loca-tion is about 1000m2, allowing more space for fitness equipment and different spaces to accommodate more classes.

The gym will be located in a space

of 600m2, with an area upstairs dedicated to the fitness centre’s karate academy.

“We had been talking about mov-ing for a while. We just wanted to get the right place,” Mr MacKenzie says.

“It will be good to be able to segregate the equipment. We will be able to spread things out a bit more and have designated areas for our different equipment...The gym can grow now. We’ve already almost doubled the amount of machines we have,” he says.

The community fitness centre’s current lease runs out on September 30, so Mr MacKenzie is working towards an opening date before then.

“We’ve only just started working on the new building, so we will be announcing an opening later in the year. We are hoping for something around the July-August time,” he says.

There are about 300 members are currently signed up at the Way of Life gym, with 100 enrolled in the

karate academy.Mr MacKenzie says with the new

location and size of the building that is set to increase.

Throughout the past few months, Mr and Mrs MacKenzie had been talking to councillors Campbell Barry and Margaret Willard about the future location of the gym.

“They believe it has huge potential to make the area more vibrant and will hopefully encourage more businesses to move into surrounding empty shops,” Mr MacKenzie says.

“For us, it will have great linkage to the park and hopefully we can run fi tness classes in the park,” he says.

When the new location opens later this year, the owners hope to have a number of new treadmills and other equipment; as well as new fi tness classes set to be in operation.

Wainuiomata Way of Life Commu-nity Fitness Centre will be located next to Labour MP Trevor Mallard’s Wainuiomata offi ce, and the grocers – set to reopen in coming months.

Hutt Valley and Wainuiomata residents joined the global fashion industry last Thursday to highlight the challenges faced by the fashion supply chain.

Raising awareness about the industy’s most pressing issues, such as exploitation and pollution, Fashion Revolution Day saw a series of events organised around the world to allow designers to engage with their local communities.

After years of careful budget-ing and help from New Zealand Credit Union (NZCU) Bay-wide, a young Wainuiomata couple have fi nally realised the dream of having a new home.

Quinton Paki and Sisi Tuala-Le’afa have three young chil-dren but really needed more room for their growing family.

Despite the couple both hav-ing jobs, for many years the pair believed they would not be able to get a mortgage, let alone service a home loan.

The couple have been cus-tomers of the credit union in Wainuiomata since 1999 and

over the past months NZCU has worked with them, help-ing them budget and set up a savings plan.

Earlier in April, Quinton and Sisi moved into their fi rst home and have achieved their home ownership dream.

“We wouldn’t be in the house without the support and guid-ance of NZCU Baywide,” Sisi says.

“We are enjoying it but will enjoy it more once we put our stamp on it,” she says.

NZCU Baywide team leader Mani Malaeulu says it was a delight assisting Quinton and Sisi into the dream of owning their own home.

“We work with the people that can’t get a foot in with the

bigger banks. We are honoured to have the family as members of NZCU Baywide,” Mani says.

As a result of community concern about illegal and anti-social activities, the Wai-nuiomata Rural Community Association is set to install surveillance cameras on Coast Road and Moores Valley Road.The association’s chairman Shayne Edwards says that stock rustling, illegal dumping of rubbish, stolen cars be-ing burnt out, boy racer activities and burglaries have all been problems from time to time in the rural area around Wainuiomata.“This is a lovely peaceful area with a great community, but occasionally we get a few idiots coming out here to cause trouble. We’re hopeful that the new security system will deter them”, Mr Edwards says.Local residents agreed with the asso-ciation last year that the installation of security cameras was a top priority for the area.The surveillance project has been achieved through help of funding from Hutt City Council, via its Hutt Safe City Group Charitable Trust.Committee members say they are very grateful for the support.“The cameras will record the number plates of vehicles using Coast Road and Moores Valley Road, but won’t show individuals, so there shouldn’t be any privacy concerns,” Mr Edwards says.The security system will be managed by the Wainuiomata Rural Community Association, and number plate data will be provided on request to the police, � re service and Hutt City Council if they need to investigate incidents.

A former Wainuiomata Intermediate student has secured her spot on a New Zealand waka ama squad heading to Rio de Janerio later this year.

Jaleighquar Rahiri will be part of a team of eight pad-dling in the junior J19K division and will compete against a number of countries at the World Championship Sprints event in August.

Four young martial arts students and animal lovers from Wainuiomata have planned a cool event to raise funds for New Zealand animal shelter, HUHA (Helping You Help Animals.)

Faolan Harkness, Callum Pollard, Brodie Sue (7), and Tora Harkness, 3, will be taking part in a kick-a-thon, supporting HUHA through performing one kick for each dollar it spends on vet bills per month.

HUHA is dedicated to teaching empathy to the community and providing shelter for those less fortunate animals that struggle to survive in today’s disposable culture.

The sanctuary is fun and interactive in many ways, designed to encourage our pet owners to be proactive and responsible for the welfare of animals, and the protection of our unique environment.

So far, Faolan, Callum, Brodie, and Tora’s Kick5000 fundraiser has secured about $1000 out of their $5000 goal, with thanks going to the support from their local community.

Steph Morris, who told the Wainuiomata News about the four charity kickers, says the support is awesome and hopes donations continue for the children’s campaign.

The four Wainuiomata-based students are all young and of junior grades so they have been training to be able to complete the Kick5000 fundraiser.

Faolan, Callum, Brodie, and Tora are all animal lovers and want to do something to help animals in need.

New Zealand politician Mojo Mathers and television personality Mike King are just a few that have got behind the campaign and shared their support around New Zealand.

Ms Morris is grateful of the support and is proud of her martial arts students creating this event.

The soon-to-be launched, all new Hyundai Sonata has been teased by South Korea’s largest automaker – Hyundai Motor Company.

Some details of the all-new Sonata that were released include a new-look exterior and reinforced improved body structure and rigidity for safety. Despite the model’s world premiere set for later this month, the Sonata will debut in New Zealand towards the second half of 2014.

The Sonata is the second model to adopt ‘Fluidic Sculpture 2.0,’ completing a more refi ned, pre-mium look. On the outside, a single-framed, premium hex-agonal grille, refined sidelines and futuristic rear designs help create an image of a dynamic, sophisticated premium midsize sedan. A longer wheelbase also maximizes the car’s cabin space.

We would both like to thank,somewhat belatedly, all of our patients for your kind cards, gifts,words and thoughts when our practice was sold at the end of May 2013. It was a difficult decision to make after 26 years of serving the community of Wainuiomata, but the steadily increasing paperwork was the last straw. We agonised over our decision to move on in our lives and create a long-overdue better lifestyle for ourselves because we knew that small family practices were no longer sustainable and ours would be unlikely to sell. This was of great concern to us and we were determined to keep on working until we could sell the practice to a doctor who intended to provide our patients with medical care within Wainuiomata. We had, in fact, just about reached the point where we thought we were going to have to “close our doors” and so we were so relieved when we managed to sell the practice. We had hoped to sell the StrandCare building at the same time, but we are still the owners and have placed it on the market as a fully functional Health Centre. The building is for sale to any doctor or health professional who wishes to buy it.

Three Wainuiomata Rugby Club play-ers have been picked for the Samoan under 20 world cup squad.Anthony and Andrew Mamea, along with Henry Stowers were selected for the team recentely ahead of New Zealand’s hosting of the Junior World Championship 2014 in June.The rugby club celebrated the three player’s achievements recently, along with congratulations given to Norm Faalinga after making his 100th ap-pearance for the green and black side.

Big achievement for rugby players

Wainuiomata Rugby Football Club is hosting its annual Old Timers Day this Saturday. It is an opportunity for the club to say thank you to members for being a part of the club over the years and past seasons.Partners, family, and friends are in-vited, and the day kick starts at 11am with a meet and greet, followed by lunch at midday.Entertainment starts from 6.30pm.Teams will also be playing for the Paul Hakaraia Trophy on the day, which is currently in Wainuiomata’s possession.

Wainuiomata Rugby Club’s premier side managed to hold on to a 30-26 victory in this week’s round against Wellington, after nearly blowing a commanding lead.

The local side opened the scoring after a Fa’atau Mamea try, before Wellington tied things up soon after.

Tyler Tane then kicked three penal-ties to give the home team a 16-7 lead approaching half time.

Jason Love then pounced on a loose Wellington pass and sprinted 60 me-ters to score and open up a 23-7 lead.

The local side led 30-12 midway through the second half before letting the visitors back into the game.

In the second half momentum changed. Wellington forced a tight head scrum and then its winger ran 95 meters to bring the score to 23-12.

Bevan Clark then momentarily put things right for the locals scoring a try that Tane converted to extend the lead out the 30-12.

However this is where the scoring

ended for Wainuiomata, as poor discipline and bad defence saw Wel-lington score two quick tries to make for a nervous fi nish.

Wellington pressed hard, but the Wainuiomata defensive line held out until the fi nal whistle.

Highlights for the home side included Tyler Tane continuing good kicking form, placing 15 points between the posts - which ended up being the dif-ference between the two teams.

Jason Love also played well, with his speed proving vital in saving a Wellington try. He also worked hard to force turnovers.

The victory keeps Wainuiomata in the top eight, and in place to qualify for the Jubilee Cup.

The senior first side suffered an-other loss, losing to Avalon 52-7. The women’s side also suffered a loss to Avalon 19 points to 14.

Next week it is old timers day at the local club, with both the top teams facing Poneke at William Jones Park.

The premier’s next game is for the Hakaraia Trophy - a trophy that both clubs take great pride in playing for.

An away win is a feat that any team who travels is determined to reach. So for the Wainuiomata Firestone Colts, the weekend’s 26-nil win over Rahui was exactly what was wanted.

The Wainuiomata under 21 side travelled to Otaki Domain on Saturday to play its Rahui Rugby and Sports Club counterparts.

The team’s Sven Johnson tells the Wainuiomata News it was a good trip up and that the team came together to show some dominance on the fi eld.

In the fi rst 20 minutes of the game, hard work and dedica-tion paid off for Wainuio-mata, with the team setting

up camp in the opposition’s half for about 20 minutes.

While it took a little longer for Wainuiomata to score its fi rst try, scored by Joel Kreiss, the plays and perfor-mance was top notch.

Kreiss’ try ended up being converted to make score 7-nil.

Back and forwards play from both teams showed a little more control during the game, before Stuart Upton stepping up to score his fi rst try of the season.

Wainuiomata went into the second time with a lead of 12 points to nil.

The second half showed the Rahui discipline slip a little, with a player sin binned – followed by a few more warnings.

Big win for colts

Wainuiomata scored a penalty try to make it 19-0, with Kreiss scoring his second try of the match.

Johnson says the game ended a little earlier than Wainuiomata had hoped for but, the 26-nil win means they hold on to

the table lead with maximum points.

The weekend’s player of the game was Fa’avae Lemau.

Wainuiomata Firestone Colts’ next game is on May 3 against Paraparaumu/Plimmerton at Mary Crowther Park.

Maria Cramp took a step back into what she knows best over the weekend - cross country running.

Held on Saturday, the event saw a number of athletes from around the Hutt Valley and Wellington region race in Wainuiomata as part of the Shaw Baton Relay.

The young athlete took out the fourth fastest time in the senior women’s division of the event hosted by Wainuiomata Harriers, with Luke Stoupe on

form in the under 12 boys and Mackenzie Winter doing well in the under 12 girls event.

Last weekend’s Shaw Baton Relay involved athletes running over rural areas of Wainuiomata, through streams and up hills.

Wainuiomata Harriers will host its classic mountain fun run and walk at the end of May and the club’s Nikki Braniff-Jones urges members of the commu-nity to get involved.

Ms Cramp uses cross coun-try running as training for her athletics.

An array of kick-off times to suit football fans of all ages have been confi rmed for the 52 matches of the FIFA under 20 World Cup to be hosted by New Zea-land next year.

To ensure New Zealand’s football family is at the heart of the global event, the games will be hosted around the country, with the sport’s enthusiasts getting first access to the tickets during an exclusive three week window, beginning April 28.

Wellington Regional Sta-dium is set to host three double-headers during group match play. The fi rst will be on May 30. The next pair of matches will take

place on June 2, with games to continue that weekend with another on June 5.

Wellington Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says these double-headers will draw fans from all around to the capital.

“Our excellent facilities have seen a huge growth in ‘The Beautiful Game’ in the Capital, so the FIFA under 20s will be a memo-rable experience for all,” Ms Wade-Brown says.

The capital will also host a round of the play offs on June 10 and will take centre stage when it hosts one of four quarter fi nals on June 14. Other quarter fi nal action will be hosted by Auckland, Hamilton and

Christchurch.The world’s top four teams

will have semi-finals in Christchurch and Auck-land; while the third and fourth place finals will be on June 20 at North Harbour Stadium before the 2015 fi nal.

He says the competition is in a great position to ensure that everyone will get to see the world’s greatest emerging football stars on home soil.

“These are exciting times for football fans in New Zealand – FIFA’s second largest global football event is coming here, and the big names of tomorrow will be discovered at our football grounds,” said Mr Beeche.

Wainuiomata-based athlete Maria Cramp has stepped up to the mark to help her Wel-lington team win a national interprovincial athletics tournament.

Held in Hastings over the Easter weekend, the young athlete competed in a number of events as part of a grade 12 girls’ team from Athletics Wellington.

Maria ran in the 400 metre, 800m and 1500m and also took part in the shot put - as she had to do four events with at least one being a track or a fi eld event.

The Wainuiomata runner came fifth overall in the 1500m and 7th in the 800m which she says was a “great achievement” as she has only been running on the track since the start of this season.

In the 1500m, Maria had to compete twice and won one of her heats.

This year is the third year in a row that Wellington has won at this event and at the Easter event the team scored 120,821 points - the most ever for Wellington and the most points by any team since 2001.

Maria started out as a cross country run-ner and only joined athletics at the end of last year. She believes she has shown huge improvement over the season so far and was a strong member of this year’s grade 12 female squad.

Her father, David Cramp, says he is really proud and that Maria is showing a lot of determination to win.

With the athletics season all wrapped up, the 12-year-old has rejoined the Wai-nuiomata Harriers and is looking forward to running cross-country events throughout the next few months.

Maria competed in a harriers event over the weekend and is hoping to be involved with national cross country championships held later in the year.

Athletics Wellington sport development manager Jo Murray says Wellington has a large group of talented young athletes and a very committed group of coaches who give up so much of their time to help them achieve their goals.

Other teams from Wellington that at-tended the Hastings event included a grade 12 and 13 boys’ team, as well as a grade 13 girls’ team.

Maria’s grade 12 team included members Grace Ohlsson, Sophie Atkinson, Marama Butler, Sara Cooper, Lucy England, Nova Hammett, Ashleigh Jones, Georgia Nairne, Monique Sears, and Kusla Smith.

She says big thanks go to the coaches and managers who have been involved this season and to those who travelled away with the team for the event.

In preparation for the Easter weekend national tournament, Maria had to do a lot of training.

Mr Cramp says as soon as Maria joined the club she was attending training events with her team mates. He says she was also doing her own training in the spare time she had.

A line up of local and regional events has been planned for darts enthusiasts during the month of May.

Wainuiomata Darts Association (WDA) members have the chance to be involved in about 10 competitions, with the fi rst this Friday.

The Ben Hill Trophy and Franklin Shield Challenges V Kapi Mana will begin on Friday, May 2, at 7pm and will likely see a number of locals striving for a win.

Throughout the month there are three Wainuiomata specialised competitions, including an open singles event on May 9, husband and wife/defacto couple’s tournament on May 23, and a drawn pairs round on May 30 – all starting from 7pm.

The month long line up is set to create some entertaining competition and will be well worth it, says club offi cials.

While more events around the region are available to local players, other events released by WDA include Griffi ns Husband and Wife/Jolly Good Friends + 101 Cups on May 4, and the Levin Shield Challenge vs. Upper Hutt on May 16.

Others consist of a quiz night and junior fundraiser on May 10, the Grif-fins Open Mixed Pairs and Ladies Invitational on May 18, as well as the Wellington Festival of Darts at Macs Brewery on May 18 and the club’s com-mittee meeting on May 19.
