President’s Message

Should We Turn the Big Ship?

I recently had a great conversation with my favorite local

framer, John Zacharopoulos, Owner and Operator of The

Framing Establishment stores in Murray and Sandy. John has

over 30 years experience in the Utah framing business. Full

disclosure here – He is my favorite framer because he shows

my paintings in one of his stores. I also consider him a friend.

The gist of our conversation concluded that any business or

organization in today’s fast moving economy must adapt or

die. Let me start at the end of our conversation, with John’s

analogy; attempting to change a large organization is like turning a big ship. “It

doesn’t happen quickly and may take a lot of effort and time,” he said, “but

eventually, with persistence, the boat can change course.”

I loved the analogy. I happen to have some experience with big ships. I remember

returning to port aboard a US Navy aircraft carrier, marveling at how little tugboats

could guide and tow a huge aircraft carrier home. From my perspective, up on the

Admiral’s bridge, 20 stories above the waterline, the task looked impossible. But

tug they did, with masterful efficiency, bringing us safely home.

Where am I going with this, you ask?

Imagine the watercolor society structure as a mighty ship, on a steady course,

steaming through calm waters – but knowing a storm is brewing in the distance.

The society has two options: To stay on course and weather the storm, or alter

course and turn into uncharted territory. Please forgive all the nautical puns. I’m

having fun.

Option 1: Society stays on course. It perseveres; riding out The Storm, doing what

experience has taught her is The Way. After all, Good Weather will eventually

return, right? Society could well make it back to Good Weather with her calm

waters, battered but not beaten, still doing it The Way. Or The Storm could defeat

Society. Tug may have to rescue the remains, towing Society to the mothball fleet,

to finish out her remaining days as a tourist attraction in Florida…or Texas.

Option 2: Society reads the forecast and alters course into unknown waters. It

avoids The Storm – but encounters uncharted seas and lands, full of new people,

technologies and products: Facebook, the Internet, online entry forms and

newsletters, PayPal, email communication, customers who prefer bright colors and

abstract paintings, digital images, clay board surfaces, varnishes, watercolor

paintings without mats and glass - strange and unusual territory, indeed.

Society does not quite know how to proceed. But Tug offers a tow, and then

Abstract steps up to the end of the rope. Soon mighty Society heads slightly

starboard. And Value joins…and so does Design. Now Society is on a whole new

course. “But wait! We need to go back,” Society cries, “It was safer before.”

Colleen Reynolds

“Remember The Storm?” Asks Tug. “I’ll help you be

safe here.”

“And look at the colors and patterns on that distant

shore!” chimes in Abstract, “We’ve never been there

before. Isn’t it exciting?”

“NO!” Society exclaims, “It scares me!”

“It scares me too,” says Tug, “Let’s all go together.”

Social: Sep 1st 7:00p

UWS Events – Upcoming

Food, Fun and Framing! Join us to

kick off the UWS year for an Opening

Social (catered refreshments!) with our

new President, Colleen Reynolds,

and our Past President, Kristi

Grussendorf. Colleen will begin with

some welcoming fun and games and

describe the wholesale framing deal

for current UWS members (offered by

Alpine Mat Company). Kristi and

Colleen will then give a demonstration

on framing, both to prepare paintings

for exhibition entry and for plein air

events. Learn about the "tools of the

framing trade." Last year's quick

framing demo was so popular, we've

decided to feature it again! And just in

time too, because we will soon be

readying our Fall Exhibition paintings,

due at the end of September.

“I have been in

love with the

medium of

watercolor always

as its ability to be

a vehicle for the

unique voice of

the artist is

astonishing. … I

usually describe

my paintings as

'interpreted

Realism.' All art is a form of story-

telling and I believe that good art asks

more questions than it answers. … It

is my personal goal as an artist that

my work also succeeds as an

invitation to you to enter the world of

my paintings where I hope you are

moved to ask your own

questions, and begin to tell your own

stories.”

September 2015 Mini Workshop:

Digital Images Workshop Recap

We had a great response to a much-

needed workshop. With paintings to

photograph, computers, cameras and

cell phones, we all practiced trying our

hand at creating our own digital

images. Lots of missteps, some

successes, and more practice will

make it easier for all of us to enter

shows! We are planning to offer this

one-day workshop again in the future.

It will be great for a review or for new

folks wanting to learn this seemingly

complicated skill.

Lian’s art teaching credentials include

eight years at the University of

California at Berkeley as well as

watercolor and Chinese painting

workshops in the U.S., Europe,

2. Confused about how the art

business works, or how to manage a

small business.

3. Just sourpusses.

Sometimes you hit a trifecta and find

someone who fits in all three

categories. When I see that, I am

sad for whatever circumstances

have given them such a negative

outlook. That’s because I know they

are victimized to a degree by

themselves. To be on balance, I

must say I know many more happy

artists than I know unhappy ones.

If you are bitter about the state of

your career, you need to turn your

negativity around. Life is too short to

be unnecessarily unhappy about

your career or your life. We don’t all

get the same skills and starting

point. We do all have the same

options to choose to make the best

of what we have.

Buying Art Is Not Out of Vogue —

It Never Was.

If you are struggling in your art

career, it is under your control to fix

it. You can find an unending list of

reasons why things suck.

Technology, geography, and apathy

are biggies for many. Here’s the

thing. People have never stopped

buying art. Let me repeat. People

have never stopped buying art.

I have known artists, art publishers

and gallery owners who have stayed

in business through thick and thin.

Buying habits change. Some years

are better than others. Nevertheless,

art continues to sell. Always has,

always will.

Why Is Your Art Not Selling?

Okay, maybe they aren’t buying your

art. If that is the case, you need to

figure out why. The usual reasons

are either you are making work that

is hard to sell. That is, it has limited

appeal to most buyers. Or, you have

work people will buy when they see

it often enough, but you are not

efficient in getting it seen by the right

prospects often enough.

If your work is a problem, you can

keep making work like that, but you

should lower your expectations

about how well it will sell. Happiness

is about meeting expectations. If

yours are out of line with the reality

of what you are making, you are

making yourself unhappy.

Ten Right Ways How to Be A

Over the years of reading forums

You can also choose to make art

with more appeal. Even though it is a

creative endeavor, it is also a

product that needs commercial

appeal if you want to build a

successful business around selling

it. Otherwise, accept you have

created a pleasant pastime where

you occasionally get rewarded with

sales.

If It’s Not Your Artwork, Then It’s

Your Other Work.

If you know your art sells when

enough people see it, and you are

not moving your work, you have a

marketing problem. Making art is

part of your art business. The other

part is finding customers and

prospects and selling your work to

them. That takes marketing first and

selling second. Marketing and selling

your work is your other job. One you

cannot let lapse without risking your

career.

Marketing creates interest and

intrigue. It drives actions that lead to

sales. You get sales with a well-

designed website, strong traffic,

excellent conversions with powerful

calls to action. You might also get

sales because you drive traffic to an

e-commerce site.

As an alternative, you might network

online and offline and generate

direct sales to collectors. This

scenario, selling direct to collectors,

is the best for artists and collectors.

It is what I teach and preach about.

Selling through galleries works.

There just are too few to go around.

There Is No Free Lunch.

You have to make your own way.

When you begin to move in the right

direction, you will find there are

those who want to help you. Start

7 UWS Paint Spot, September/October 2015

or "Sig", has a beautiful show currently hanging in Furhiman Fine Art and Framing.

On the evening of the Logan Gallery Walk, she greeted friends and new viewers of

her work from her wheel chair. Her silk paintings are so vibrant and lively, and some

of her paintings made me wish for a road trip to New Mexico.

Sig spoke of some of the other artists we know who have influenced her work. I

thought of my own experiences with many of you. I am so grateful to know you, and

feel your influence in my own efforts to be a better painter. We artists sometimes

like to work alone, but I really feel we benefit greatly from the support, experience

and knowledge of those other artists around us.

I am a better artist because of my involvement in the Utah Watercolor Society, and I

have heard others share the same sentiment. When we help each other build this

organization, we all win. Thank you for the part you play! Get and stay involved! We

all need each other's support!

Upcoming Cache Valley Events:

Our next three workshops are Kristi Grussendorf, September 18th – 19th, "Poured

Painting Techniques"; Lester Lee, September 26th – October 3rd, "In the Steps of

Georgia O'Keefe"; and Charles Reid, October 12th – 16th.

We look forward to our upcoming meetings, starting in September. They will be in

the Logan Library, on the Second Tuesday of the month. critique starts at 6:30pm,

and our meeting starts at 7:00 pm.

Our Fall show will be in November. See the calendar on page 2 of the newsletter for

important dates.

Utah Watercolor Society is a great influence on me. I love

the opportunities my involvement gives me.

This August, I had the great privilege of seeing Joyce Baron

and Cache Valley Artist Richard Garland exhibit beautiful

paintings at the Kimball Art Festival in Park City. Richard

Garland's artwork has a wonderful spontaneous, watery feel

to it. I love what the paint does on his paper! I can really feel

the emotion of Joyce Baron’s dynamic work!
