Western Federation of Watercolor Societies History
Society Delegates and Alternate Delegates
The Western Federation of Watercolor Societies was founded in 1974 by the New Mexico Wa-tercolor Society through the foresight and work of Dr. David Gale. Today WFWS includes over 5,000 artists in several societies across western states. Our mission is to encourage and recognize artistic excellence and promote the visibility of watercolor in the West.
Our juried show is hosted each year by a different regional member society. We showcase works cre-ated with a variety of water-based media. Mem-bership in WFWS is automatic for any member of one of the ten societies. Signature Membership may be awarded to any artist who is a member of one of the WFWS member societies and whose work has been included in three WFWS Exhibitions. Master Signature status, added in 2020, may be awarded for any member whose work has been included in eight WFWS Exhibitions.

Project Manager’s Message President’s Message
The Utah Watercolor Society is honored to host the 46th Western Federation of Watercolor Societies Exhibition and Delegate Meeting. This is a great opportunity to celebrate some of the finest watercolor artists in the western states and in the world. Unfortunately, the ongoing worldwide pandemic continues to inhibit our ability to meet in person, therefore the painful and difficult decision was made by the UWS WFWS committee to make the event digital this year. Even though we will miss being together, we are endeavoring to make this digital event memorable.Since its inception in 1974, UWS has been committed to supporting our membership by providing opportunities to further their skills and exhibit their work. We provide a wide variety of activities, including workshops, plein air events, exhibitions, and scholarships. We value our participation in the WFWS as part of our ongoing promotion of water media and community outreach. We would like to thank everyone who submitted their artwork for consideration – and wish to congratulate those artists who are in the exhibition.A very special thanks to all participants, including the WFWS committee, for their hours of preparation for the 46th WFWS Event.
Roxane Pfister, President, Utah Watercolor SocietyWFWS 46
Just a brief few words to accompany the message from my most excellent management partner, Maura Naughton. Maura was involved with our last UWS-WFWS Event in 2010 so her experience, support and encouragement was a prerequisite for my involvement! Excitement and participation continued to grow throughout this planning process and the necessary talents and gifts continued to materialize. We believe using ArtCall has been one of our very best decisions and we are so grateful for the incredible efforts of our Exhibition Chair, Ann Galt. I want to personally thank ALL the incredible volunteers. Although we had both a Plan A & a Plan B, it was a mixed emotional bag when we finally made the call to go virtual. As with Zoom meetings, there are many positive aspects of a virtual event. Planning continued with renewed enthusiasm and creative ideas. Our talented juror, Sarah Yeoman has selected an exceptional exhibition and every effort has been made to create an inclusive, low cost, entertaining and accessible WFWS46 Event.
Kristi Grussendorf,Utah Watercolor SocietyProject Manager, WFWS 46
For more than a year we’ve all been bombarded with news of the pan-demic. I would like to just talk about the art. Artists across the WF member societies did their job painting fantastic works beyond word descriptions. Our juror, Sarah Yeoman, did her job selecting the cream of the crop from a strong field of hope-ful artists. If our founder, Dr. David Gale could see us now, he would smile at how the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies has grown into an exhibition of water media works that is on par with the quality of other national exhibitions. We have planned the best, most exciting virtual event possible. We hope this allows more people to enjoy this exhibition from their homes in states across the western United States. This format allows you, the viewer to take your time to see the excitement and wonder that each artist has conveyed about his/her subject and the process of creation. We all look forward to the time when we can meet together, face to face, again. A special thanks to all the volunteers, delegates, artists, Sarah Yeoman and especially my co-hosts, Kristi Grussendorf and Ann Galt. It’s been a privilege working with you all.

Project Manager’s Message
4
It is an honor being invited by the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies to jury its 2021 Exhibition. I would like to congratulate the artists from the 10 watercolor societies for their outstanding entries. It has been a pleasure to view and spend time with your works.
Selecting 100 paintings out of over 800 pieces was a challenge for me. The overall high quality of work coming from each society made it even more difficult to narrow down. To start I familiarize myself with all of the paintings before starting the selection process. My selection then begins with choosing those works that show mastery of the medium through strong composition and color choice. The next and more important question is can I see the artist in process and do they have a story to tell? Does the painting provoke an emotional response? Has the artist taken a risk going beyond technique to discover his or her own voice and vision?
I would like to congratulate every artist who entered the show and a special congratulations to the artists whose works were chosen. I wish you all the best in your creative journey.
