As for me, I joined UWS many years ago, but decided to be more active after our family returned to Utah from a short stint as hobby non-farmers in Pennsylvania. We missed the Westfriends, the mountains, red rock, and weather. I still love my goats and I miss them. I started attending meetings regularly when Maura Naughton was President and decided to join the UWS Board in 2010 under Joy Nunn's leadership. Why did I do that? I wanted to meet UWS artists and participate in the organization in a different, more in-depth way. I am so glad I did. I started with Publicity and evolved to the Presidency! In between, I worked with Lynda Burruss on the Small Works Exhibitions in Logan and chaired the Communications position as we moved to digital and online technology. As your VP, I am proud to tell you that, with Board help, I submitted our first ZAP grant application (waiting to hear results), and provided two excellent workshops, spending time with two wonderful national artists, Tom Schaller and Bev Jozwiak. I set up a 2018 contract with Jean Haines, developed our surveys so we can better understand and improve what we do, returned to working with Maura for planning our 3 rd Annual Arts and the Park Event, and acquired a great Board for 2016-2017. Here is my art thing...I paint. I love watercolor. I take workshops because I want to get better and I want more tools with which to experiment. As I go to more, I like the camaraderie and I gain confidence. I enter exhibitions; I go to exhibitions. I have been accepted into some, always a good feeling, and have been rejected from some, not such a good feeling. I do not have the Stars; I am not Signature. I think I am like many of you. Start our year with a fun evening

socializing with UWS members.

Activities to be announced.

Iain Stewart’s sole focus will

be bringing your creativity to light

and aiding you in dispelling the

myths of the difficulties of painting

in this wonderful medium. Given

the right encouragement and

understanding of the basic

fundamentals, watercolor is a

creative outlet unmatched for its

ease of use, cost of materials, and

pure enjoyment of artistic

expression.

Through demonstration, thoughtful

critique, and lessons learned over a

long painting career Iain will help

you understand how to prepare for

and anticipate the challenges that

painting in watercolor presents. By

guiding you through his process,

which relies on simplification of

subject through exploratory

sketching and value studies, Iain

will demonstrate how to create a

road map that, if followed, will

greatly improve your painting. His

purpose is to provide you with

a repeatable process, involving

carefully planned steps that you

can use for painting any subject.

The class setting is very relaxed

and accommodating to all quite

often with a broad mix of

experience and skill levels

represented. Most importantly, Iain

allows as much time as possible for

one on one instruction and critique.

In the end it's about you and your

3rd Annual Arts and the

2016 RECAP.

More historical buildings were

painted this season and this

wonderful event is improving each

each year.

A big thank you goes to Maura

Naughton for all her hard work on

the event as well as to the Arts

and the Park UWS Committee. We

also express appreciation to

Shawn Rossiter, our MC; Annette

Lamb, President of Entrada Board,

and her husband Larry; Capital

Reef National Park

Superintendent.

A tremendous sense of

camaraderie was felt as new

friendships were built and old

friendships renewed. We can't wait

for next year! Remember – Arts

and the Park is now a menu

choice under Paint Outs on the

UWS website!

Awards were given for both small

format paintings and large format

paintings.

UWS delegates, Tom Howard &

alternate, Kristi Grussendorf, drove

to Denver, Colorado (with spouses)

Wednesday, June 8th to represent

UWS at the WFWS meetings and

exhibition. Maura Naughton also

attended the board of delegates

meetings to share progress made on

the WFWS archives.

Some additional highlights of the

weekend were the network meeting

where societies shared their insights

and ideas, a painting exchange, the

exhibition tour by the juror & the

farewell dinner at the Cussler

Automobile Museum. It was a busy,

fun filled weekend, and the UWS

delegates were honored to represent

our Society. It is, indeed, very good

to be part of Western Fed!

If you’d like to get more involved, our

turn to host the annual WFWS

exhibition comes up again in 2021

and we will need many

hands. Traditionally, societies begin

planning these events five years in

advance so it’s not too soon to begin!

News From the North – UWS Cache Valley Chapter (CVC)

President’s Message

8 UWS Paint Spot, July/Aug 2016

Art for me is an attempt to express the wonder I see in

the world around me. I have been strongly drawn to the

beauty of nature since I was a child. I began painting

with oils as a teenager, and only discovered watercolor

about three years ago, at the insistence of my wife. In

all art, I am particularly captivated by the effects of light

in landscapes and other subjects, and hope to continue

to learn how to express the effects of light in my

paintings. I am fascinated by the magical things

watercolor does, and plan on continuing to discover

and try to master its mysteries for as long as I can

paint.

2015-2016 has been a good year for the Cache Valley Chapter of the Utah

Watercolor Society. Our attendance has grown from about 35-40 to around 50

or even 60 people. A few years ago we had to move from one of the smaller

rooms at the Logan Library to a larger room. Now we are contemplating where

we might go if/when we need a still larger room. Growth has its challenges as

well as its joys. Our winter exhibition at Logan Art Gallery, judged by Carl

Purcell, gave members from both Cache Valley and the Salt Lake area a chance

to display their talents. We appreciate the support from the gallery and from the

artists. See the article at http://uws-cvc.blogspot.com

We have had some very good presentations at our monthly meetings from such

wonderful artists as Laura Hawley, Charles Reid, Tom Howard, Kristi

Grussendorf, Dianne Adams, Joseph Alleman, Lester B. Lee and Glen Edwards.

Workshops in Cache Valley were held by Kristi Grussendorf, Lester B. Lee, Tom

Howard, Colleen Reynolds, Dianne (Sig) Siegfried, Ian Ramsay, Charles Reid,

Carl Purcell, Eiko Anderson, and David Lobenberg. What an exciting opportunity

to learn! Watercolor classes were also held in Smithfield at Sky View High

School, taught by Lester B. Lee and Jeannie Millecam. Our Scholarship

program gave an award (in the form of a package of art supplies) to a local high

school student who exhibited her painting at the Springville Art Museum. A new

innovation in the Cache Valley Chapter this year was the acquisition of new

video recording and projection equipment for use in our monthly demonstrations

and our workshops. We are now able to project a large image of the

demonstration to the whole room. These demonstrations are being put online for

chapter members to access from home. We are looking forward to a wonderful

year in 2016-2017. Who knows what news we will have as we go forward!

Heartfelt Condolences

UWS extends our condolences and

best wishes to the family and loved

ones of Renon Klossner Hulet, who

passed away on July 4, 2016. Ree

was a gifted artist and teacher. Her

bright smile and positive energy will

be sorely missed by all who knew

her. But, we will celebrate her life

with smiles rather than sorrow – as

we know she would wish it.

Click here to read her obituary

and/or leave your comments to her

family.

“Art is the tool I use to express my

emotional response to life. Like

hitting a high ‘A’ on the keyboard,

which makes a tuning fork vibrate, I

sometimes feel the vibration

emanating from a subject and THAT

is what I hope to capture in my work.”

~Renon Klossner Hulet
