der.
Hullehet dit in oorlegmet die departemen-
te van wetstoepassing en sosiale ontwikke-
ling van die Stad Kaapstad gedoen.
Volgens Hennie Koekemoer, waarnemen-
Volgenshom is daar ooknie n direkte ver-
band tussen die straatmense en die misdaad
in Loevenstein nie.
siesmeer gereeld sal voortgaan.
moet akkommodeer, s Koekemoer.
Benedicta van Minnen, burgemeestersko-
miteelid vir behuising, het by navraag ges
dat talle klagtes oorplakkers en straatmense
word veral in Bellville ontvang.
Wanneer ondersoek ingestel word na
klagtes oor plakkers en plakkershutte, ver-
wyder die plakkers self hul strukture. Die
wetstoepassingdienste help om die afval en
rommel te verwyder, het sy ges.

A
collection of deeply moving photo-
graphs reflecting the real life stories
of special needs children and their
parents, forms the heart of an initiative
started by a well-known local paediatrician.
The Touching the Heart initiative was
launched at a gala event held at Val die Vie
Polo Club on Youth Day.
The paediatrician, Professor Pieter Fou-
rie, who practises from Cape Gate Medicli-
nic, describes the coffee table book by the
same name as just that: a book designed to
touch the hearts of people.
We wanted to show the public the reality
of what these children go through what we
deal with while treating them, the fear and
anxiety they suffer aswell as the sorrowand
worry their parents have to face on a daily
basis, he says.
Fourie is the chief executive officer of the
Daniel and Friends Fund that was started
in 2014 to provide support for such children
and their parents.
This non-profit organisation is the legacy
of little Daniel le Roux (3) who passed away
after a brave fight against the incurable
Leighs syndrome in 2013.
When he suddenly stopped breathing in
September 2012, doctors prepared his par-
ents for the worst and emphasised that
there was no hope.
There was one doctor who gave us
hope, says Daniels mother, Lianie le
Roux, about meeting with Fourie. He was
that someone that we were looking for,
someone that did not give up and was will-
ing to fight with us for Daniels life.
Fourie heard about a new wonder drug
from the USA that was being developed and
tested on children, specifically for Leighs
syndrome. The company approved the use
of EPI 743 on compassionate grounds and
Danil was started on it immediately.
Slowly but surely he started getting bet-
ter and we were overjoyed. There were lots
of setbacks, infections with multi-resistant
organisms, and an emergency operation on
Christmas Eve that nearly cost him his life,
but Danil kept on fighting, with a smile on
his face, says Le Roux.
But despite this improvement Daniel fell
ill with bronchitis on 22 August 2013 and
was admitted to hospital for treatment,
where he unexpectedly died the next day.
The Daniel and Friends Fund came into
being after Fourie challenged a broken
heartedLianie and twoothermothers in the
same position to make a difference.
Nicky de Beers son Sam suffers from Ru-
binstein-Taubi syndrome, cerebral palsy
and autism, while Kate Laurie has two disa-
bled children, Mariel and Liza. They both
suffer from Aicardi-Goutieres syndrome.
Mariel died a week before Daniel, also due
to complications of her syndrome.
As a parent of a special needs child, we
realised how big the need was, says Le
Roux. There is very little support, and you
feel alone and isolated. You sometimes just
want to talk to someone that is in the same
situation that you are. Your family and
friends go on with their normal lives and
it feels like you are being left behind. Be-
cause no one that is not in that situation can
understandwhat it really is about. The feel-
ing of being utterly alone, the thousand
emotions in one day the fear of literally
holding your childs life in your hands.
Since its inception the organisation has
supported 76 families countrywide and
even reached beyond the borders of South
Africawhile supportingaDutch familywho
had to bring their severely disabled sonVic-
tor Goosen to Cape Town for life saving sur-
gery earlier this year.
When completed, the book will contain
some 70 pictures taken at the Tygerberg
Hospital and several other paediatricwards
across Cape Town.
The pictures were taken by Brackenfell
photographer Candice Rodriques.

weekliks operasies in Bellville omklagtes
van plakkers te ondersoek, maar die
meeste van hulle keer eers saans terug,
het hy ges.
Suzette Little, burgemeesterskomitee-
38802. Hulle kan ook die hulplyn 0800 872
of 201 skakel oor sake rakende straatmen-
se.
Deur geld aan die straatmense te gee,
moedig dit hulle verder aan om perma-
nent op straat te bly.
Skenkings kan ook gemaak word aan
nie-regeringsorganisasies wat n saam-
werk met straatmense, het sy ges.
V Inwoners word aangemoedig om enigemisdaad
by 021 596 1999 aan te meld.
TheCapeTownGemandMineral Clubwill
host their next open day at their clubhouse in
Goede Hoop Street, Bothasig, from 10:00 to
15:00 on Saturday 2 July. Visitors will be able
to browse stones, crystals, minerals, beads
and ready-made jewellery and enquire about
the clubs field trips, courses and activities.

A Louis Vuitton purse, an iPhone, designer
jackets, make-up, as well as R40 000 in cash,
were among the items that were robbed
from the comediant and cabaret singer Na-
tanil this past Saturday at a guest house
on DAria outside Durbanville.
Natanil, who was due to perform at
DAria later that evening, was one of the lat-
est victims of robbery and the incident
caused him to miss his own show.
Another robbery also took place at the
Clara Anna Fontein development site on
Sunday 26 June.
Natanil was taking a nap at the time of
the robbery to recover from bronchitis and
an ear infection, reportedDie Burger. It was
reported that he pretended to be asleep
when he heard people entering his room.
According to Captain Marchell Rhode,
spokesperson of the Durbanville police, the
robbery took place at about 14:30.
While he was sleeping, unknown sus-
pects forced open the front door and gained
excess to the premises. The complainant
heard a female voice and thought it was one
of the cleaning women. Later he heard a
male voice and then got up and saw a man
running out of the house, Rhode said.
They grabbed his jackets, microphone,
shoes, make-up, a Louis Vuitton purse and
iPhone all to the value of more than
R100 000, he said. They also took his pass-
port, identity document anddrivers licence
and theatre bag. The robbers jumped in an
oldwhite bakkiewith an unknown registra-
tion number and sped off, he said.
Die Burger reported Natanil felt very
sick and was shocked after the robbery and
was treated in hospital. By the time he was
discharged, it was long after the starting
time of his show.
. On Sunday at about 10:15, four armed
men entered the Clara Anna Fontein devel-
opment. They robbed a guard of two com-
pressors and fled in a Hyundai bakkie.

ie buurtwagte van Aurora, Kendal,
Stellenberg, Stellenridge en Ridge-
worth het op Donderdag 23 Junie in
oorleg met die metropolisie en Bassett-se-
kerheidsmaatskappy motors in Bo-Oakda-
le afgetrek en op gesteelde goedere en
dwelms beslag gel.
Volgens Hennie Groenewald van die se-
kerheidsmaatskappy word sulke operasies
gereeld gedoen veral wanneer verdagte
voertuie of inbrake in die omgewing plaas-
vind.
Ons het vooraf in die operasiekamer by-
mekaar gekom om ons strategie te beplan,
en het naby Stodels geparkeer. Die meeste
motors wat afgetrek is, se motorvoertuigli-
sensies en die bestuurders se rybewyse is
nagegaan. n Verdagte bakkie is in Kendal-
weg vasgeparkeer en die insittendes is
deursoek.Ons konniks onwettigs by die in-
sittendes kry nie, maar daar was n sak toe-
gedraai in n weggooibare babadoek. Die
metropolisie het die sak oopgemaak en die
dwelmkhat daarin gekry, hetGroenewald
ges.
dig.
In n ander voorval is n bottelgroen To-
yota afgetrek, gelaaimet gesteelde goedere.
Al drie die insittendes is gearresteer. Die
motor se nommerplaat is deurgegee na die
operasionele kamer en is as gesteel aange-
meld, s hy.
hands gesien.
begin jy hallusineer. Ek moet erken dis
nogal iets nuuts vir my, het hy bygevoeg.
V Bel Hennie by 074 473 5774 as jy iets verdag in
Bo-Oakdale opmerk.
Buurtwagte behaal groot sukses
So lyk die dwelm khat, wat gekonfiskeer is.

nVerdagte isWoensdag 22 Junie inAndrew
Murray-straat in Bo-Oakdale met gesteelde
goedere vasgetrek.
plaas gesien is. Gordon enNothnagel het on-

ohannes Kotze (80), alombekend as
doen as hy net by die huis moet rondsit.
breek word by motors of huise nie, want
die kwaaddoeners ken almal se bewe-
gings, s hy.
of tannie. Voorheen was di aanspreek-
vorm amper soos n vloekwoord, maar dis
nou uit respek dat jy so aangespreek
word, s oom Hannes.
Soms as hulle in die middedorp inko-
pies gaan doen, is hy verbaas as die drom-
krappers vir hom s hy loop darem ver
My spanmaat wat nou by my sy vak-
leerlingskap in buurtwag doen, is Ben
Rhode. Hy is nog bloedjonk, want hy het
in Mei eers afgetree. Nou spot die ander
lede en s soort soek soort.
Wanneer ons iets verdags in die buurt
opmerk vreemde motors of onbekendes
Ons
was sewe kinders en vyf leef nog. My ryk-
dom is my vier kinders twee seuns en
twee dogters en hulle het almal universi-
teitsopleiding ontvang, danksy my spoor-
wegsalaris. Ek het 41 jaar, 1 maand en 10
dae vir die SA Spoorwe, nou Transnet,
gewerk.
baan by die Horskool Bellville kom
voortsit het.
Kyk, ek kommos van n plaasskooltjie
en op Paleisheuwel praat ons mos net
Afrikaans.
On-
land kom, wasmy naamVlakhaas of som-
mernetVlakkie. Ekwondernounogof die
onderwysers darem geweet het wat is n
vlakhaas, want hulle was almal van die
stad.Maardeesdaepraat ekookdiekonin-
waardigheid, want jy weet nooit wanneer
jy n persoon nodig gaan kry nie.

Sy plan getrou uitgevoer
het. Omhierdie resultate te
behaal, het jy n ongeloofli-
ke span mense nodig
S gesels Ilse Maartens,
takbestuurder van MES,
wat n amper nege jaar die
tuig by MES neergel het.
Die viering skep ook ge-
leentheid om aan ons mis-
lukkings te dink. Dis ook
belangrik, want daaruit
kan ons leer en iets prak-
ties van God se genade beleef! Ek was be-
Die grootste werk is binne my gedoen, s
sy.
kon werk. Johan Krige het my geleer hoe
prakties werk. Fanie Botha het my geleer
Alan Childs het my geleer oor inspirasie
Haar kollegas is n wonderlike pot-
verryk n ware Ubuntu-belewenis: ek is,
want hulle is. Ek salueer hulle uit my
hart in diepe dankbaarheid vir hul onbaat-
sugtige diens en liefde vir hul medemens.
Van die straatmense en
vroue wat vasgevang is in
prostitusie het ek die
meeste geleer en danksy
hulle glo ek dat wonder-
werke regtig gebeur.
Mense word genees en
lewens word herstel, s
sy.
Syhet ook geleer dat per-
sepsies feite word, maar
feite kan ook verkeerd
wees. Ek het baie aanna-
mes gehad oor hierdie
dierbares en wat hulle no-
dig het. In my tyd hier by
MES het hierdie groepe
my soveel geleer om baie
van my verkeerde opvat-
tings reg te stel. Hulle het
my n groot stuk nederigheid kom leer
waarvoor ek innig dankbaar is. Daar is al-
tyd iets om voor dankbaar te wees. Maak
stryd teen armoede, s Ilse.

skade was nie so erg dat ek nie kon sien nie.
My instink s toe vir my ekmoet nie stop
nie, maar aanhou ry. In daardie oomblik het
ek net aan my passasiers se veiligheid ge-
dink. Ek is seker dieman of symakkers wou
h ek moes stop sodat hulle of die bus kon
steel of ons leed aandoen, s Adams.

nag, s Van Niekerk.

his week construction is finally un-
derway in anattempt to relieve traf-
fic congestion in Durbanville and
make provision for the rapid develop-
ment in the north.
Transport for Cape Town will spend
approximately R64 million on the exten-
sionof Jip de JagerDrive inDurbanville.
The northern section of Jip de Jager
Drive currently ends a few hundred me-
tres after the intersection with Van Rie-
beeckshof Road. The City will now em-
bark on construction work to extend Jip
de Jager Drive all the way to Racecourse
Road, also known as theM13, in Durban-
ville.
According to Brett Herron, Mayco
member for Transport for Cape Town
(TCT), the contractor will be on site this
week.
People may not notice any physical
construction work during the first few
days as the contractor must prepare the
site and set up a base camp, he says.
The base camp typically consists of
temporary offices from where the site
manager and engineers will work, as
well as changing rooms for the employ-
ees working on site and sanitation facili-
ties, he said.
The extension of Jip de Jager Drive is
part of the Citys Congestion Manage-
ment Programme, which dictates how
TCT, the Citys transport authority, will
spend an additional R750 million over a
period of five years for road infrastruc-
ture projects to alleviate the major pres-
sure points in the city.
According to Herron the new sections
will add an additional 1,7km to the exist-
ing Jip de Jager Drive.
Once completed, the new road will al-
leviate traffic congestion on the other
suburban roads in the Durbanville area
and cater for the increased demand for
road space due to rapid development to
the north, he says.
Furthermore, these new sections will
provide residents with improved access
to residential and commercial areas, as
well as to schools.
The new sections will provide motor-
ists with a more direct route between
Durbanville and the N1 freeway. It will
divert a significant volume of traffic
from Tygerberg Valley and Van Rie-
beeckshof roads.
In fact, once the extension is complet-
ed, the travel distance between Van Rie-
beecks-hof and St John roads will be
shortened by nearly two kilometres,
says Herron.
New traffic signals will be installed at
the intersectionof Jip de JagerDrive and
Tygerberg Valley Road, and at the inter-
section of Jip de Jager Drive and Race-
course Road.
The new northern and southern sec-
tions of Jip de JagerDrivewill be a single
carriageway.However, the intersections
are designed to accommodate a dual car-
riageway in future.
Apart from a universally accessible
walkway and street lighting on one side
of the road, the project also provides for
cycle lanes on the shoulders of the new
sections of Jip de Jager Drive, he says.
Even though traffic should not be se-
verely affected by the roadworks, TCT
anticipates somedisruptions alongRace-
course and Tygerberg Valley roads, but
only a few months down the line when
the construction has reached an ad-
vanced stage.
Any lane closures to accommodate
the roadworks will be limited to off-peak
periods as far as possible. The construc-
tion period is about 14 months, if all goes
according to plan. I want to thank resi-
dents in advance for their patience dur-
ing this period, says Herron.
Jip de Jager to be
extended at last

Dis n ver-
stommende verhaal en n bewys
dat die Here n plan met elke
mens se lewe het.
Hyt op Fochville in Noordwes
grootgeword waar hy ook in 2000
gematrikuleer het. Hy was goed
in sport, veral gholf, maar ook n
tipiese rebelse tiener. Ironies ge-
noeg was sy bynaam op skool
Pastoor.
In my hart het ek geweet ekt
n roeping in die lewe, vertel
Henry,maar vir lankhet hy daar-
die roeping onderdruk en aan die
skadukant van die lewe rondbe-
weeg die kant waar drank en
dwelms hoogty gevier het.
Hyt n skool opdiemynebegin
werk en was op twintig die jong-
ste voorman by n myn in die
Noord-Kaap. Hyt hard gewerk
maar ook baie hard gespeel en
baie hard baklei.
Dis toe datTannieLillemore, n
sendeling, sy pad op Northamna-
by Rustenburg kruis. Syt daarheen ge-
trek in opdrag van die Here. Syt hom nie
geoordeel nie, net baie met hom gesels.
Oor die Woord en oor Jesus. Dis sy wat
hom tot bekering gebring het.
Hywas besope en vol dwelms toe Tan-
nie Lillemore een aand met hom gepraat
het en vir hom ges het die Here het n
planmet hom. Terwyl sy gepraat het, het
ek skielik nugter geraak en n encounter
met God gehad. Ek was dadelik sober en
by my verstand en het net daar my hart
vir God gegee. Sulke trips vat gewoonlik
8 tot 13 ure om uit te werk. Ek het besef
die Here het my van dwelms en alkohol
bevry. Dit was radical.
Dit was Tannie Lillemore wat hom by
dieHatfield-opleidingsentrum inPretoria
afgelaai het. Hy is daar as pastoor opgelei,
Hyt Tannie Lillemore nooit weer ge-
sien nie.
Vandag is Henry n geliefde pa, skoon-
seun, pastoor envriend ... en ook n talent-
volle sanger.
Sy debuutalbum is beskikbaar by alle
CUM-boekwinkels of by dieDeBron-kerk.
Dit kan ook digitaal afgelaai word by

ie misbruik van dwelms soos dagga en
tik onder die jeug jonger as 20 jaar, is
een van die grootste poblemewaarmee
Badisa in die Wes-Kaap te doen het.
Die Verenigde Nasies se internasionale
dag teen dwelmmisbruik en onwettige han-
del is Saterdag 26 Junie gevier en die leuse
vir vanjaar se veldtog is Luister eerste.
is. Die ander groot probleem is die skokken-
de voorkoms van fetale alkoholsindroom en
statistiek toondat tussen 68 tot 89 gevalle per
1 000 geboortes landwyd voorkom.
Ons verwys gewoonlik ons pasinte in
dieWes-Kaap na die Ramot-behandelingsen-
trum in Parow, het sy ges.
Die ander groot probleem in dieWes-Kaap
is die ernstige nagevolge wat alkoholge-
bruik gedurende swangeskap inhou.
Hulle
het dus n glyskaal volgens inkomste gem-
plementeer vir pasinte wat nie kwalifiseer
vir n staatsubsidie nie, het sy ges.

Teach young
ones to
fall in love
I sat upright with my legs dangling over
the edge of the seat, my tiny hands
fidgeted in anticipation. The lights went
down, the curtains opened, the action
started and I was in love.
I must have been about six or seven
years old when my Oumie took me to see
my first theatre production. In those days
options were limited, but every school
holiday my gran would drive me off to
The Baxter Theatre to see the latest
childrens piece.
It was the beginning of a long and very
beneficial love affair.
You see, my love of theatre opened a
whole new world to me.
I have travelled to prohibition-era
American prison cells in Chicago, to
Paris with Phantom of the Opera, to
exotic Africa with Postcard from Morocco,
experienced Russian folklore with Swan
Lake and 15th Century England with
Shakespeares Richard III.
The theatre
unlocked my
imagination and
introduced me to a
world of fantasy
that allowed me to
experience stories,
music and beautiful
imagery that would
often stay with me
long after I left the
venue.
But, sometimes
when I speak to
people, I realise
that many still see
the theatre as an exclusive experience,
despite the fact that the vibrant arts
culture in Cape Town lends itself to far
more inclusivity than ever before.
This winter school holiday, for exam-
ple, sees a great number of childrens
theatre productions on offer around Cape
Town.
Then theres all the community theatre
initiatives going on around the northern
suburbs from the Milnerton Players to
the youth-driven Project 021.
And, if theatre isnt your thing, the
stand-up comedy and magic industries
are both on the rise.
Add the huge number of live music
events in TygerBurgers weekly Whats
On diary and Capetonians really are
spoilt for choice when it comes to
entertainment even during the tradi-
tionally quiet winter months.
A wise producer once told me that
audiences need to be developed. We need
to expose young audiences to the stage in
order to cultivate theatre-going adults.
So, why not take a child to the theatre
this holiday? You might just prompt a
life-long love affair. Louisa Steyl

Peter Smulik puts two
questions concerning the
operation of nuclear power
stations (Ignorance over
nuclear tech, TB, 22 June).
One, insurance cover in
the event of a release of
nuclear particles due to an
uncontrolled event, accident,
or an operating error due to
staff incompetence or con-
struction errors.
At Chernobyl it was staff
doing procedures in an
unsafe reactor, and at
Winscale, sensors wrongly
positioned, resulting in a fire
in the graphite reactor core.
That type of fire in graph-
ite becomes self sustaining.
The Japanese event was
caused by a natural event,
which caused the flooding of
the cooling pump emergency
diesel generators, as the
normal power for them had
been lost with the destruc-
tion of the normal grid
supplied by turbo-alternators.
With regard to the insur-
ance for such an event, and
claims by the nearby and
affected residents, he should
attend the Public Safety
Information Forum, which
will supply him with the
information required.
These he can extend to
cover the demolition of the
power plant, when its useful
life has finally expired. He
can also request for special-
ist speakers to lecture on
such subjects. If Eskom can
find such a willing person,
then he can be asked.
What he should bear in
mind, is that he should be
more afraid of what is
happening to our food than
from nuclear waste (a
personal comment!).
We have a situation in a
small community up the
West Coast, where the
prediabetic and diabetic
incidence is one person in

I thought I might comment on
the new fence that is being
put up for the parking lot in
front of the Durbanville
municipal building.
While it is an eye sore, it
seems necessary as my car
was tampered with last week
when I parked it there for an
hour. The door lock was
forced but luckily not opened.
It is a shame that a large
fence now has to be built to
keep crime out of the lot, but
I appreciate the effort made to
make it a safer place to park.

three. At the turn of the
century 1800s to 1900s the
world wide cancer incidence
was one person in every one
hundred and fifty. Now it is
one in five. Why?
Traces of the active chemi-
cal in the herbicide Round Up
are now being found in the
cotton wool used in female
hygiene products, made of
cotton from genetically
modified cotton plants.
Perhaps the human seed
should be genetically modified
to accept Round Up and the
insecticide BT?
This genetic modifying of
plant material is not done to
improve the nutritional value
of the plant, but to make it
immune to the application of
definitive herbicides or
insecticides. The insecticide
BT is also put into the genetic
make-up of the plant. We, the
populus, are pursuaded to eat
this evilly contrived junk in
the interests of worldwide
food sustainability. Great
lobbying phrase used on
governments ...
We have already had DDT,
Thalidymide, and various
other evil chemicals banned.
Some, although banned, are
still being used!
It seems we are being
committed to a chemical
death and not a nuclear one!
Nuclear waste degenerates,
but hard chemicals do not!
The pebble bed reactor
burned up nuclear waste as
does the latest version of the
nuclear salt reactor. Both are
1950s technology. Google
Trans Atomic Power for the
latest design of the nuclear
salt reactor.
The PSIF is set up for the
residents in the 5km and
16km evacuation zones. But
outsiders are more than
welcome.
We have had all sorts of
interesting visitors, local
residents, to an ex-nuclear
submarine nuclear engineer,
to me, who had been involved
in the first nuclear power
stations built in the UK,
albeit in a nut and bolt
tightening capacity.

Voor enige ernstige gevolg-

genoem word dat die draer

Daarom is dit wys om eende

Wie sou kon dink dat die

nWednesday 22 June, the Kenridge cross
country team hosted their annual charity
run at Kenridge Primary to raise funds
for three-year-old Mason van Dyk.
Mason suffers from a rare life-threatening
skin disorder known as Harlequin Ichthyosis.
He was born with thick plates of skin cover-
ing his face and body. His face and eyes were
pulled taut and his left hand was deformed. His
body rejected his barely formed right hand and
auto amputated it, said Jenny Fisher, organis-
er of the event. Masonwas not expected to live,
but he is a fighter and has just celebrated his
third birthday. The costs to keep Mason com-
fortable, mobile and healthy are astronomical,
and the Kenridge pupils decided they wanted to
dedicate 60 minutes of their time helping him.
In 2011 the cross country captain, EmmaRoss-
ouw, initiated this worthy cause by requesting
they run to raise funds for people and children
who do not have the same freedom ofmovement
they have, and in doing so, giving them a better
chance of living more fulfilling lives.
The learners from Grade 1 to 7, as well as
many of the teachers, came out in their masses,
full of the Kenridge spirit for which they are
known, and ranup a storm forMason. LittleMa-
son was present and loved meeting the children
and the attention that was lavished on him.
It was a special moment when he said thank
you to all of the runners over the microphone.
When asked if he would attend Kenridge Prima-
ry one day, just like his mom, Lisa, he became
very excited and exclaimed: Yes!

I
f you look after your business,
your business will look after
you.
This is themotto of a young 76-year-old
Mickey Radowsky, co-owner of Textile &
Towel in Willowbridge which opened
two weeks ago.
Mickeys retail career started in 1962
at Universal Stores, a family credit cloth-
ing chain. Mickey has also owned vari-
ous Cardies and a Cash Converters fran-
chises. In 1972 he joined Western Prov-
ince Hardware which, by the time he left
as managing director, was a chain of 15
shops. In 1983 he joined Monex Develop-
ment and worked on the construction
and opening of the Tyger Valley Shop-
ping Centre which opened in 1985 with
Mickey as the general manager, a posi-
tion he held for nine years.
Subsequently, from 1998, he was again
involvedwithMonex in the development
and construction of Canal Walk, where
heheld thepositionofmanagingdirector
until that centre was sold to its present
owners in 2003. From that time, until
2014, Mickey has practised as a retail
leasing consultant to both retailers and
shopping centre owners.
At 75 years old, his second marriage
was to Diana, who owns a textile store.
As a result of his involvement with her
business, he saw an opportunity for him-
self in buying and selling short lengths
of fabric which he did informally for two
years. During this time he met John Dos
Santos, the towel half of the business.
It occurred to me that by extending
the range and quality of our offering we
could provide the Willowbridge shopper
with top quality branded textiles and
towels. I put this idea to John who saw
the merits and bought into the concept
enthusiastically. It is ourmission to pro-
vide quality products that represent
great value, says Mickey.
John was working for a publishing
company in Observatory and was told at
62 years old that he should leave as per
company policy.
My late wife, Claudia, said I neednt
worry and that Ill eventually find some-
thing. So when I left the publishing com-
pany I put onmy thinking cap and decid-
ed to concentrate on something that is
used daily, and that is how I started trad-
ing Glodina towels from the side of Bos-
mansdam Road and the flea market in
Milnerton. I met Mickey and as the say-
ing goes, the rest is history, says John.
Mickey knew Tyger Valley well and
when they started to look for premises
they opted for Willowbridge Mall.
The reasons for our decision were
that it was a good area, well established,
the residents in Tyger Valley are still
working and have a monthly income,
their homes are paid for and the ladies
love to shop. By word of mouth patrons
are entering the shop, says John.
The name of the shop is self explanato-
ry and their towels are useful gifts for ev-
ery occasion.
We keep a full range of towels in all
sizes and even a range of baby sets. We
recommend upholsterers, curtain mak-
ers and people that can cover lamp-
shades and make cushion slips. Each
looks after their own business and the
best part of the venture is that we know
the commodity inside out. When I dont
know something, I Google it. Since we
started the shop we both lost weight
gone are the days of snacking the whole
day; we are too busy seeing to the needs
of our customers, said John.

Winelands Toastmasters recently held a
youth event where children aged between
five and 13 learnedmore about the organisa-
tion and also got first-hand experience of
speaking in public.
The children came from Durbanville,
Goodwood, Fish Hoek and Newlands. Six of
the children gave prepared speeches on the
theme Animals. Speech titles covered a
wide spectrum ranging from cat whiskers,
koala bears, Indian rhinoceros and even im-
aginary animals.
The Table TopicsMaster, James Hurford,
then brought in a bag of balloons.
The children had to choose a balloon, pop
it and find the speech topic inside the bal-
loon.
Not only did the children deliver speech-
es, but they also shadowed the normal
Toastmaster roles. Josh Brown shadowed
the ah counter, Chloe van der Merwe shad-
owed the grammarian, Kammel Naidoo as-
sisted the time keeper, Aidan Strydom par-
ticipated as Sergeant At Arms as well as
JokeMaster, andRebeccaBrownhelped the

With his inspirational message, Gavin,
the runner-up of the national singing com-

South Africas top Christian singers on
this years Gospel Skouspel stage.

Gavin, who used to live in Durbanville,
says he jumped at the opportunity when
he was invited to perform at the show.
Im very religious and my mom has
been in theministry formywhole life, he
says, adding: It would be amazing to be
given the chance to standup thereand sing
for God and everyone.
While Gavin is currently riding The
Voice SAwave, hes no stranger tomusical
success and his road to the competition
was a winding one.
When he first spoke to TygerBurger in
2012, hewas visiting SouthAfrica between
working with his band Sunshine State in
Australia. Thiswas after a chancemeeting
with Brain McFadden from Westlife saw
Gavin moving to Ireland for nine years
and later travelling theworld toworkwith
songwiters such as Billy Mann, who
writes for Pink and Phil Thornalley, the
writer of Natalie Imbruglias Torn.
He decided tomove back to SouthAfrica
permanently soon after meeting his wife
while here for a holiday.
I was away for years and just couldnt
be away from family anymore.
Since then hes been busy with cover
shows in Johannesburg where the couple
have made their home. He also took the
seventh place in the X Factor SA competi-
tion in 2014.
In-between all of this, Gavin was fight-
ing a personal battle though. The singer
and songwriter has been open about his
struggle with alcohol dependency since
the start of The Voice SA.

stage and just mood in general, I knew it
