The search is on for some diabolical dia-per dumpers.The dumping ofwaste on open spaces

is always a problem, but people in Belharfear for their health after loads of nappiesended up in their area.A Tennant Close resident, who does not

want to be named, has raised her concernsfor thehealth of people in the area after loads

of used diapers were dumped on a field nearSt Vincent Drive recently.“We’re always having a problem with

dumping on this field, but this is too much,”she said.“There is a constant problem with dump-

ing of building rubble on this site, but latelysomehouseholders have also taken to dump-ing their dirt there.“I recently spotted somebody trying to

dump the contents of awheelie bin there, butI admonished him to take it home and wait

for collection. With this latest incident Icould not believe what I also found – a loadof diapers, obviously stinking terribly.“It looks like it was dumped here by a ser-

vice provider to a medical or health facility– it’s just such a lot.”Mayoral committee member for health Si-

yabulela Mamkeli has replied that the mat-ter has been investigated and the field hasbeen cleared.“It is not clearwhere thiswaste came from

as waste from the St Vincent Clinic is dis-

posed of via the normal refuse collection ser-vice, not by a waste removal contractor.“Illegally dumped material was also

present on erf 27465 that belongs to EskomHoldings and the City has served notice onthe land owner for the immediate removalof this waste.“Once the notice period expires, the City

will re-inspect the land and if it has not beencleared,wewill undertake thiswork andbillthe owner for the removal.”

Another resident in the area, Freddy Adam-son, also felt strongly about the illegal dump-ing at various places in the area.

“We always try our best to keep these openfields clean, but there are just too many busi-nesses that don’t care about others.

“It is important that all neighbourhoodsbe the eyes and ears of the authorities, butthen they must be prepared to react whenthese incidents take place.

“There have been too many cases wherewe phone when we see these dumpers in ac-tion, but they take too long to come out.”

The resident who originally complainedconcluded by adding that parents must alsobe aware of where their children are play-ing.

“Material like this that is dumped in ourcommunities can hold a serious health risk.Parents and care-givers must be aware ofthese hazards before children in their careget sick from playing in these areas.”

This type of dumping is also a problem inareas such as Bonteheuwel and ValhallaPark where they have also created highhealth risks.

Resident Johan Cruywagen warned peo-ple about children getting near to these are-as. “In an area where unemployment is veryhigh, there is a major problem where chil-dren are not getting enough to eat,” he said.

“The problem comes when household rub-bish is dumped and children find leftoverfood that has been dumped. They are tooyoung to know any better and just wantsomething to eat, but are unaware of therisks if they eat the sometimes rotting food.

“We have to be aware of these dump sites,report the perpetrators and make sure thatthey are cleared before somebody dies.”V For future reference residents can report dumpingto the City’s call centre on 0860 103 089, or to theirlocal law enforcement if they have information thatcould lead to an arrest.

Improved services in Belhar are just aphone call away with the opening of anew FreeCall line in the suburb.The City of Cape Town’s mayoral commit-

tee member for corporate services and com-pliance, Xanthea Limberg, last week un-veiled the City’s newest FreeCall line,which is situated in Belhar.

The FreeCall line is in the HuguenotSquare Hall and can be used to contact theCity for various enquiries and service re-quests, including account enquiries, and al-so to report illegal dumping, water leaks,sewer blockages, street lights that are notworking, potholes and damaged roads.

Today’s unveiling brings the total num-

ber of FreeCall lines installed in communi-ties across the city to 128.

The City is aware of the limited landlineavailability and the high costs of cellphonecalls. This led to the City installing FreeCalllines in public amenities in communities,which residents can use to contact the City.When a resident picks up the handset, theywill immediately be connected to the callcentre at no cost. The call centre agent willrespond in the language preferred by thecaller, log the service request, and providethe caller with a reference number.

“The City is committed to improving ourservice delivery, especially to lower incomecommunities,” said Limberg.

“We urge residents to make maximumuse of this FreeCall line and call upon theCity for help by reporting faults, loggingcomplaints and requesting services.

“Residents can further play their part inhelping us build a well-run city together byreporting acts of vandalism and the theft ofCity property. Our Customer Relations De-partment has increased the City’s capacityto respond to complaints, repair faults, andmonitor service delivery in the quickesttime possible.”

FreeCall lines are available in communi-ties across the city from Atlantis and Mam-re to Manenberg, Bishop Lavis, HanoverPark, Mitchells Plain, Brown’s Farm, Re-treat, Ocean View, Hout Bay, Dunoon, Phil-ippi, Langa, Nyanga and Gugulethu.

“In line with our commitment to buildinga caring city, more FreeCall lines will be in-stalled during this financial year in themost vulnerable communities across thecity,” concluded Limberg.

That is the warning from a councillorin Uitsig after a young girl was injuredin the area recently.

“I was recently alerted to an incident inUitsig where a young girl was severely in-jured after having come into contact witha live power cable,” she says.

“When I contacted the family I also con-tacted authorities to find out who the ca-ble belonged to.

“Eventual investigation revealed thatthe cable was a Telkom cable and the girlwas shocked by a broken overhead Telk-om conductor cable hanging onto an ille-gal connection from the main house to abackyard structure.”

Van Reenen warns the public that thisis the danger of illegal connections withregard to cables from the City, Eskom orTelkom.

“The cables are very dangerous and

may cause serious injury when touched.“When you encounter such broken or

exposed cables please report it immedi-ately.

“Don’t go near it and clear the areawhile alerting others about it.

“Also make sure that children and petsdo not venture near them,”she said.

Ballroom dancing is an intergral part of the heritage ofthe Cape, and these learners gave the audience somefancy steps waltzing away.

A workshop where two very sensitive andimportant issues – depression and teenagesuicide – will be discussed, is set to be heldsoon in Malibu Village.

October is celebrated as mental healthmonth.

One of the main reasons for the work-shop, organisers say, follows the death ofa 12-year-old girl who shot herself but whoindicated her intentions to a coach.

Workshop organiser and qualified socialworker Ellen Jeftha says theworkshopwillfocus on confidentiality and legal aspects toindicate when is it acceptable to honourconfidentiality.

Theworkshop is open to every concernedperson working with children.The workshop will be held at the prefect

centre at the Malibu High School on 10 Oc-tober.

Costs for the workshop is R100 per per-son. Groups of five and more pay R80 perperson.

since starting last yearwithadonationofma-chines, they now have 15 workers on a full-timebasis supplinggarments to three compa-nies. “We’re proving that we can tackle anytask we are given,” she says.“Currently we are making uniforms,

Caps for a smile: Operation Smile has partnered with Fair Cape Dairies and shoppingcentres and some schools in the Western Cape to change the lives of children acrossSouth Africa who are born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. Amansellinghis computer led to thearrest of a suspect with R2 400counterfeit money in his posses-

sion.According to Lieutenant Kevin Willi-

ams of the Parow police, the complain-ant, who was selling his computer,agreed to meet a seller at a service sta-tion in Connaught Road, where thetransaction took place.It was when he counted the money,

that he realised one of the R100 notes hada slightly different colour.“The suspect tried to flee, but the com-

plainant told his friend to hold on to the

suspect until police arrived,” Williamssays.He then ran over to a Flying Squad ve-

hicle that was on the scene, filling upwith petrol.“They placed the suspect in custody

and arrested him for fraud,” Williamssays.Parow detectives responsible for com-

mercial crimes later interviewed the 26-year-old suspect and discovered that thehe was in possession of more counterfeitR100 notes to the value of R2 400.”The suspect appeared in the Bellville

Magistrate’s court on 10 September forhis first appearance, but is still in custo-dy for further investigation, says Willi-ams.

ants who reside in its rental and sellingschemes for diligently paying their rent byrewarding them with R1 000 gift vouchersin accordance with the City’s Housing In-centive Scheme.

This came as a special treat for recipi-ents SusanGeorge fromRavensmead,whocoincidentally celebrated her birthday onthe day, as well as Fuad Khan fromBelharand Mogamat van der Schyff from Wood-lands, who celebrated their birthdays onHeritage Day.

The oldest recipient today is 80-year-oldCarel Claassen from Elsies River.The tenants live in various areas, in-

cluding Manenberg, Uitsig and HanoverParkandhavepaid their accounts regular-ly for at least three consecutive months(February toMay 2015). Residents with ar-rears qualify if they have made paymentarrangements.

“TheCitywants to thank our tenants fordiligently paying their rentals. It is veryencouraging to see that a large portion ofour winners are pensioners,” said theCity’s Mayco member for Human Settle-ments, Benedicta van Minnen.

“People like 80-year-old Carel Claassen,a tenant fromElsies River, should be laud-ed for leading by example and ensuringthat their accounts are paid, despite theirday-to-day challenges.“The revenue obtained is used to main-

tain our rental stock, which contributes toproviding a better quality of life for ourtenants who are most vulnerable.”

In an effort to increase loan and rentalcollections, the scheme rewards thosewhopay their accounts regularly by giving

them a chance to win prizes. To qualify forthe draw, housing debtors must have paidtheir housing accounts for a period of atleast three consecutive months, with sixhousing debtors per month winning shop-ping vouchers to the value of R1 000 each.

Since the introduction of this incentivescheme in November 2010, rental and loancollections have risen by an average of16% and 25% respectively.

Winners are of all ages. They are drawn

from both the City’s indigent group andfrom those who are currently working.“By encouraging our residents to pay

Samaritan wheels out newwheels for Iris HouseIris House Hospice celebrated their new setof sponsored wheels recently.

“At our annual Mardi Gras Ball on 22 Au-gust one of our guests, Craig Capper, offeredto pay for a vehicle for our ‘angels’ to betransported to our hospice building,” saidCarol Petersen of the hospice.

Because of the new wheels, the childrenwill now also be able to benefit from the hos-pice’s Respiteday care sessions onMondays,Wednesdays and Saturdays, said Carol.

The benefactor did the handing overaround noon the following Saturday amidstcheers from staff and visitors. He and Suevan der Linde, founder of the hospice, re-vealed the beautiful and very handy new setof wheels, still fresh from the dealership.

“He paid for the car in full two days afterour ball,” a proudCarol said after the unveil-ing.

Craig attended with his partner and theirson and a Guardian Angel trophy was be-stowed on him for his generosity and kindact.

Richard Knoetze not only set the recordfor the longest braai attempt ever – 96hours – for the Guinness Book of WorldRecords earlier this year, more recentlyhe got some help together in terms ofsponsorship, and hosted a regular braaifor the clients at the Elim night shelterin Elsies River.Richard is the founder of BraaiPolar,

an awareness campaign for bipolar dis-order, so meat on coals with a cause liesclose to his heart.“We wanted to do something special

for the clients of the centre,” Richardsays.He got together with Pieter van Dalen

A five-year-old’s fascination with hors-es has become a passion for a 17-year-old inBelharwho isnowready to jump

to another level.The journey for Jessica de Vries started

with a family visit to Spier in the winelandswhen she was five, and led to a passion that

has seen her winning show-jumping compe-titions for many years.Her mom, Charlene, described the start of

that passion when the family visited Spiermentioning that even as a toddler she hadthis fascination with horses. “She would al-ways point out horses in books or when wewere out on a family drive,” she says.“Then on the visit to Spier there were po-

ny rides and she did not want to stop riding.

She just wanted more and R200 later thegroomwhowas leading the horses eventual-ly let her start leading the horse around –and she was completely comfortable with itfor the rest of the day!”That day was the start of Jessica’s passion

and her dream of going on to a higher leveland competing at the Olympics.“I live, eat, sleep and dream horse riding

and show-jumping,” says the young eques-trian, who is also an accomplished artistwho loves drawing her favourite animal.“Show-jumping has beenmy passion from

an early age and I have the determinationand drive to compete on a professional levelwith my ultimate goal being the Olympics.“I currently have a 10-year-old gelding

who was dressage schooled but I have per-sonally schooled him for show-jumping.“He is performing excellently in practice

shows andwe havewon every practice showthatwe entered.My years of horse riding ex-perience and training has put us in goodstead to compete on a professional level butcompeting, paying for tack andmaintainingmy horses has been extremely challengingand expenses are escalating.”Jessica explained that her mother has al-

ways supported her and carried the finan-cial burdens of the sport but injured her legat work and is now unemployed.“It is for this reason I need to seek sponsor-

ship to assist me in attaining and achievingmy goals,” she says.“I intend to partake in competitions of the

South African National Equestrian SchoolsAssociation as a starting stone to the rest ofmy competitive career and will be enteringthe qualifiers early next year.”While Jessica had years of riding lessons

at junior level the family couldnot afford les-sons at a higher level but that never deterredthe young rider.“I would not allow this to get me down so

I spent many years riding, practising andtraining on my own.“There was always this quest for acquir-

ing more information, knowledge and tech-nique so I watched videos, read books andspoke to experts in the field,” she said.Mom Charlene is very proud of her

achievements. “Her dedication to her sportis phenomenal, even facing the setback of

my injury,” she said.“People in the sport have acknowledged

her excellence as a rider and the results inrecent shows have proven this.“Thehardwork that she puts into training

has also paid off in her school work whereshe is also a top achiever knowing that ittakes hard work and concentration to be thebest, and that is her goal in show-jumping.”Jesica says horse riding is known to be a

sport for the rich.“I have experienced this at many competi-

tions, but my sacrifices, tears, hard workand determination is my motivation to suc-ceed and be aworthy competitor,” continuesJessica.“My appeal for a sponsor is for more than

helping me achieve my dreams in the sportbut I also want to be a positive role-modelto other young people from all walks of lifeto strive to reach a positive potential in life.“They must join me in showing the world

Precious paws sold on beachPluto, a seven-and-a-half-year-old Boxer dogwhowentmissing while his owner was surf-ing in Granger Bay, was reportedly stolenand sold for R50.His bereft owner, Robert Abel, told

News24 on Sunday that he left his “sweet-na-tured” pet on the beach on Friday while hehit the waves – something he often did, asPluto is well-known in the area.“Everyone loves the dog ... He is legendary

atmost of the surfing beaches of theAtlanticseaboard.”When Abel came out the water, he saw

that Pluto was gone. He began looking forhim and approached a couple on the beachto see if they had seen Pluto.Thewoman told him that the dog had been

with them before, but then her “friend soldhim for R50” to a woman in a car.She told him the womanwas at Pick n Pay

with the dog, and would return.“You will get your dog back,” the woman

apparently told Abel.However, shortly afterwards, the couple

disappeared from the beach area. Abel saidthey appeared to be homeless.Abel then went to a nearby police station

where he was told that if he emailed a photoof the dog, patrols would be informed to lookfor him. Once he did so, he decided to stoplooking.“I would have kept hunting but I thought

the patrol could cover more ground.”However, Abel said hewas horrifiedwhen

hephoned thepolice station thenext dayandwas told that they did not have access to theemail system after hours or on weekends.“It’s absolutely appalling,” said Abel, re-

gretting the lost time he could have been outsearching for his precious pooch.By Sunday, he had still heard nothing

about Pluto’s whereabouts.Abel said he got Pluto when he was six

weeks old and “you could hold him in onehand”. He originally named him Da Bomb

but then was concerned it might cause prob-lems at airports with security, so changedhis name to Pluto because Boxers “are goofyand super-sweet in nature”.He said while Pluto did not like to swim

“he did love to run in the water up to chestlevel”.JP Smith, mayoral committeemember for

safety and security, says that while he hasnot heard of the abduction of dogs frombeaches, he knows of two cases where dogswere snatched in the vicinity of their own-ers’ homes and sold.He says many people who might appear

homeless are in fact “strollers” who come toareas like the beaches in the day, in orderto “acquire odd jobs or seek donations”, be-fore returning to where they actually lived.He believes “the chance is slim” that Pluto

World Cup matches in Amsterdam.Ricardo de Reuck’s charges finished fifth,

after initially getting off to a flier in thegroup stages of the tournament, winning alltheir opening matches.The World Cup uses the game of soccer to

inspire the homeless to make significantchanges in their own lives, whether it be bygetting a job or returning to their families.The competition currently has 74 country

participants.The South African team comprised five

representatives from the Western Cape, twofrom the Eastern Cape and one fromKwazu-lu-Natal. In the second group phase of thetournament, the team only dropped pointsin a draw with Brazil on their way to theknockout stage of the event.However, they would come unstuck

against Portugal in the quarter final, losingthe match 5-2.But they redeemed their pride by bounc-

ing back in the fifth place play-off, beatinglast year’sCup championChile in the semifi-nal before seeing off Romania to secure fifth

spot. Despite coming agonisingly short ofclaiming the grand prize, De Reuck main-tains that the bigger picture for their oppor-tunity to represent their country is a tre-mendous achievement in itself.“We grew up surrounded by gangsterism,

we know what poverty is like, yet weachieved certain things in our lives. Theycan do the same if they put the hard workin”, says De Reuck when speaking about histeam.De Reuck points out that there are a few

ex-players who are now actively involved inthe organisation, and says that it is all aboutseizing this opportunity that is given to

them. “There are a lot of people out therewho believe in what we’re trying to achieve.These guys just need to believe in them-selves, their abilities and the possibilitiesthat are out there.”The team’s playing kit was designed and

It did not take long for TUT tostrike as Masonwabe Sokanyile bur-ied an early free kick which left UWCgoalkeeper Reon October standing toput his side 1-0 up.UWC had an opportunity from a

free kick of their own shortly after-wards, but Phiwokuhle Mpalalacould not hit the target after meetinga deep ball at the back post.
