It was remarks like these from the 22 chil-dren at Tygerberg Hospitals childrens wardthat deeply moved Archbishop Emeritus Des-mond Tutu during his visit earlier this week.

Christmas came early for these childrenwhen Tutu and his daughter, Mpho, arrivedto hand out presents.

Tutus laughter rippled down the corridorsas he made his way to the children, who wereall eagerly awaiting him.

While they are not well, they are still joy-ous, Tutu said. He and his daughter handedout gifts such as teddybears, cars and dollsto each child.

Tutu gave his undivided attention to everychild, individually shaking their hands, chat-ting lovingly to them all.

Ten-year-old Lorenzo Jansen, who becameblind after a miraculous recovery from braincancer, thanked the Arch for the visit andthen asked if he could touch his face.

Immediately Lorenzo commented: Youhave a big nose! He moved his hand to hishead, and said excitedly: And a bleskop!at which Tutu laughed delightfully.

Lorenzo, who now attends the WorcesterSchool for the Blind, told Tutu he wants toplay the guitar one day and would love to re-ceive a guitar for Christmas.

Tutu was clearly moved by his warmth andlaughter, saying he had a fantastic spirit.

Lorenzos aunt Annelien Baartman, said it

was an absolute honour to have had Tutuvisiting the ward. It was a real treat.

The children, who suffer from various ill-nesses ranging from diabetes, cancer, TB andrespiratory problems, were very excited byhis visit. This visit was a highlight of theirstay in the hospital which they will probablynever forget. Tutu lauded Tygerberg Chil-drens Hospital, calling it a wonderful insti-tution. He said it was wonderful that moth-ers were allowed to stay with their childrenwhile they were in hospital.

I was in hospital when I was three yearsold after a burn wound. It was traumatic be-ing alone at such a young age. Here the chil-dren feel that someone is with them. It reduc-es the trauma and increases their chances ofgetting better. Before he left, Tutu prayed for

everyone in the ward, blessing the hospitaland staff. He made special mention of thosewho will have to stay in hospital, while all ofus can enjoy Christmas at home.

About his visit, Tutu said: We have comehere to spread a bit of joy, but we got so muchin return.

Tygerberg Childrens Hospital communi-cations officer, Laticia Pienaar, said the visithad been a real boost for the children.

Tutu brings so much energy with him andhas a passion for giving to others.. The gifts were given to Tutu in honour

of his 80th birthday. He had asked that in-stead of giving him gifts, friends should ear-mark them for various causes, including thechildren at the Tygerberg Childrens Hospi-tal, of which he is patron.

DispresieswatPhilipRedelinghuys, nuwevoorsitter van die sportkomitee van Parow-vallei, en sy span gedoen het. Hulle het han-de gevat met n paar mense van die publieken self begin om die Parowvallei-sportklubna sy ou glorie te laat terugkeer.

Op Saterdag 12 November het kinders vanParowvallei en die Parowvallei-voorberei-dingskool swartsakke gegryp en solank dieterrein begin skoonmaak. Hulle gaan im-mers self groot voordeel trek uit die klub sefasiliteite sodra di weer op die been is. nPlaaslike kruidenierswinkel het die skoon-maakoperasie geborg.

sipaliteit aan te pak.Volgens Philip gebruik n informele sok-

kerliga tans van die bane, al het dit heelte-mal verval. Die hoofredes vir die agteruit-gang was vandalisme, n gebrek aan sekuri-teit en n gebrek aan verantwoordelikeklubbestuur. Die nuwe Parowvallei-sport-komitee sal voortaan aan die munisipaliteitverantwoording doen oor alle sportaktiwi-teite, spesiale funksies en die algemene ge-bruikvandieklub. Diekomitee is reedsmetWP-tennis in gesprek oor die stigting van ntennisontwikkelingskoepel. Hierdie tennisdevelopment hub sal in die nabye toekomstennisklinieke en -afrigtingbydieklub seba-

ne aanbied, het Philip uitgebrei.Dis veral hier waar plaaslike skole betrok-

ke sal wees. Natly Marinus van die Parow-vallei-voorbereidingskool is volgens Philipreeds oorgehaal om die projek saam met dieklub en WP-tennis te laat werk.

Die klanke van beide tennis en georgani-seerde aksiesokker, behoort gou weer in Pa-rowvallei te weerklink. Wie weet, dalk wordn Wimbledon-kampioen nog hier gebore,skerts Philip.. Navrae oor die Parowvallei-sportkomi-

Miskien wel die eerste om die nooddienstedaaroor in te lig

In elk geval, ek kry die brandweer se nom-mer, want hulle het n afdeling vir die ver-wydering van diere. Ek het meer gedink disvir jou huiskat wat hoog in die boom sit ofjou boerboel wat die gat in die heining oor-skat het, maar n mens weet nooit. Dinge ver-ander.

Die vrou by die brandweer is ddseker syhet verkeerd gehoor. Sy s sy gaan my deur-sit na disaster management, ek moet virRussell vra.

Ek vertel Gary nie, maar ekhet skiet oorweeg dis een vanmy meer twyfelagtige talente.Maar toe gewonder oor die ge-raas, gedink disaster manage-ment kan dalk dan wel opdaag.

Gary vra waar die slang nouis. Ek s, wel, ek reken in die ag-terplaas. Kyk jy nou daarna? Nee, ek het ditmet n emmer toegemaak en die emmer indie grond probeer indraai sodat die addertjienie kan wegseil nie.

Lewe die slang nog, vra Gary. Ja, laas toeek gekyk het. Ek dink nie suurstofnood kanso gou intree nie. Dit is nie n groot slang nieen dis nie n klein emmer nie.

Gary s hys oor tien minute daar. En hyis. Met n groot houer en n slangvangstokstorm hy van die voordeur af sonder huiwe-ring na die agterdeur en toe reguit na die em-mer. Jy sal sweer die man was al voorheenhier.

Snaaks, ek merk n sagtheid in sy o op.Ek het meer van n koudheid verwag.

Hy lig die emmer stadig op, nog meer, heel-temal. Gits, het die salmandertjie nou wrag-gies verdwyn? Maar toe steek Gary rustig syhand vorentoe, tel die wriemelende dingetjieop en praat uiters rustig terwyl die slangetjieom sy hand krul.

Hy kyk my half vraend aan.Jy hou hom in jou tuin, maar

Hulle is besig om uitgeroei te raak. Ek salhom op n veilige plek loslaat, beloof hy. Enek glo hom.

Net elf jaar oud en reeds n langasem. Karlidu Toit van Laerskool De Tyger in Parow,het dt onlangs bewys toe sy die vinnigstevroulike deelnemer aan die WP-oopwater-swemuitdaag by die Ashanti-dam by diePaarl was. Dit was boonop haar eerste oop-water-swem.

Altesaam 24 deelnemers tussen 9 en 58 jaarhet in die 400 m deelgeneem in water wat nskrale 19C was. Hiervan was 12 vroue. Sy hetalgeheel agtste oor die eindstreep geswem.

Karli swem al vandat sy agt jaar oud is enhet vanjaar vir die eerste keer kompeterendbegin deelneem. Sy oefen net twee dae perweek vir n uur lank by die gimnasium, wantdis al wat haar ouers se skedule toelaat. Hierrig Bianca Marais van Tygerberg Aquatics

haar af. Sy het nie juis iets gedoen om haarspesiaal vir die oopwater-uitdaging voor te be-rei nie, vertel haar pa, Niel du Toit. Ek wounet sien of sy nie paniekerig sou raak as sy niedie bodem kan sien nie.

Hy vertel dat sy n absolute waternimfie is.Dis n sportwat syvreeslik geniet. Sy souelkeuur van die dag in n swembad deurbring assy maar net kon. Sy sal byvoorbeeld pootuitvan die swemoefening af kom, maar weer bydie huis in die swembad klim as dit tog netwarm genoeg is.In hierdie stadium is daarnog nie spesifieke planne vir haar swempadvorentoe nie. Niel s hulle plaas in min drukop haar om te presteer. Ons vergelyk maarnet haar tye by elke gala met die voriges omte sien of sy verbeter.

Na afloop van die vergadering is n voorleg-ging oor waterbesparing gedoen. Hierna hetal die raadslede van subraad 4 (Goodwood,Parow, Ravensmead, Elsiesriver, Ruyter-wacht en Matroosfontein) n belofte van diewaterambassadeurs om water te bespaar ente bewaar, onderteken.

Gemeenskapslede van Elsiesrivier wat dieaanbieding bygewoon het, het ook die belofteonderteken.

Ek doen n beroep op alle inwoners om insubraad 4 te help om water te bespaar gedu-

rende die lang, dro, winderige somer-maande. Kaapstad is n gebied wat onderwaterskaarsste gebuk gaan. Dit het wissel-vallige renvalpatrone wat n groot invloedhet op die vermo om genoeg water te voor-sien, het Justus ges.

Hy het almal aangemoedig om water tebespaar deur water te bewaar, waterver-morsing te verminder en lekplekke te laatregmaak. Mense moet ook watervermor-sing en verstoppings aanmeld, asook anderoortredings van verordeninge.

En betaal vir waterdienste ontvang.Hyhet ges tuinmaak en huishoudelike ge-bruik is steeds verantwoordelik vir diegrootste persentasie van daaglikse waterge-

bruik. In terme van die Stad se waterverorde-ninge, het ons almal n plig en verantwoorde-likheid om water te bespaar, het hy beklem-toon.

Hy het die volgende maniere om water te be-spaar voorgestel:. Lei water voor 10:00 of n 16:00;. Gaan lekplekke gereeld na en laat dit her-

stel;.Moenie harde of geplaveide oppervlaktes

met n tuinslang skoonspuit nie;. Koppel n selfsluit-toestel aan jou tuin-

slang;. Laat waterbesparende toestelle aanbring

waar moontlik;. Hou krane toe wanneer dit nie gebruik

This morning (12 November) it was amale voice. Fortunately I did not comply.When I kept asking why are they so con-cerned about my computer the personslammed down the phone.

Scam could haveended in disasterTuesday (15 November) at 13:30 I wasdriving inBellville onDurbanRoad in thedirection of the N1 highway.

At a red robot, the driver of the vehiclebehind me (a white commercial van withorange adverts across the top) got out ofhis car and approached my window say-ing that I had petrol leaking from the backof my car.

When the robot turned green I found asafe place to pull over (at the bus stop stillin Durban Road) and he pulled behind meon that busy road, like a Good Samaritanwho was assisting me out of a fix.

I got out of my car and he inspected un-der my car and said there was a definiteleak and that he would help me, whereaf-ter he signalled that I should follow him.

When we both got into our respectivecars and pulled off, he overtook me andturned immediately left at the approach-ing intersection assuming that I would

follow him.I ignored this stranger and proceeded

straight.I went to the nearest petrol station just

a little stretch away and asked the petrolattendant to assist me in determining ifI had a fuel leak under my car pointingat the exact location where the concerneddriver had pointed.

Two petrol attendants checked the bot-tom of my car and there were no leaks.This con artist was white, sounded Afri-kaans and in mid-twenties.

This is a scam aimed at misleadingwomen travelling on their own.

Had I accepted his assistance, he proba-bly would have dispossessed me of my ve-hicle, stolen my bag and jewellery andmost likely harmed me. It all happenedvery quickly!

Horse wasabused todeath

A horse owner, charged with contraven-ing the Animal Protection Act in whatis described as one of the worst cases ofabuse of an animal in many years, wasgranted R3 000 bail in a Bellville courtlast week.

The wounds on the horse were so exten-sive the animal couldnt stand.

The animal, named Mr Lonely, was dehy-drated due to fatigue and in severe shockand trauma. He was lying prostrate on theground, partially covered by a blanket, histesticles badly swollen and with open welts.

The horse couldnt stand as his hindquar-ters were giving way and he died shortly af-ter being found.

MeganWhite of theCartHorseProtectionAssociation last week said the associationwill call for themaximumsentence tobe im-posed on the owner and another two adultmales from Freedom Farm. They appearedin court on Friday 17 November on chargesof cruelty and abuse.

The horse was found after a patrol inspec-tor of the association received an urgentcall from a Freedom Farm resident, inform-ing her about a horse lying down in the fieldbehind his property.

On arrival, she was totally unpreparedfor the shocking scene, White said.

The horse was immediately injected witha strong painkiller and the inspector re-quested help from three bystanders to carryhim to the horsebox.

En route to the Epping Clinic, the associa-tions consultant veterinarian was called toassist and treat the horse.

The vet stated the condition of Mr Lonelywas likely caused by human cruelty andabuse, and that the prognosis was poor.

White says witnesses stated they hadseen Mr Lonely pulling a cart driven by theowner and two youths over a period of threedays. They had been driving recklesslyaround the farm for long periods, beatingthe horse with a stick and a rubber hose.

She said given the extreme nature of theabuse, and the torment that Mr Lonely en-dured, the management and committee ofthe Cart Horse Protection Associationunanimously agreed that charges be laidagainst the owner and two drivers.

Concert forChristmasThe Orion Organisation (a therapeutic andtraining centre for people with disabilities)will be hosting a concert at the AGS Churchin Goodwood on Sunday 4 December from18:00 until 19:30.

Aviva Pelham and Riaan Hunter will per-form, together with other artists such asFriedel Mitas, Conroy Scott, Charne Hugo.

Nicky Abdinor, a clinical psychologistborn without arms and who acts as ambas-sador for Orions art project, will be theguest speaker.

Guests are invited to bring along a dona-tion for Orions Christmas party or a usedtoy for a child at the centre.
