Socio-economic challenges in Joe SlovoPark and Du Noon continue to affectcrime statistics in Milnerton police’s

precinct.At first glance the recently released statis-

tics for the period between April 2012 toMarch 2013 inMilnerton and surrounds lookworrying.Murders have gone up from 35 to 45, rob-

bery with aggravating circumstances from238 to 325 andburglary at residential premis-es from 602 to 795.Of the 29 listed crime categories, only 10

have shown a decrease.The biggest of these were the illegal pos-

session of firearms and ammunition thatwent down from 29 to 19 and commercialcrime from 578 to 484.

RobberyThe latter is countered, however, by the

dramatic increase in robbery at non-resi-dential premises that shot up from 27 to 70.One of themost serious “crimes” in the ar-

ea isn’t even included in the statistics – apa-thy.Milnerton police station commander, Brig

Marius Stander, elaborates: “We organisemany crime prevention meetings, but when

the day comes that room is empty. Peoplemust be informed and become aware.Knowledge directly affects the individual’ssafety.“One could hear at these meetings that

crime is up in your street and you could real-ise it’s because the street lights arenotwork-ing or because the municipal grass needscutting.”Stander is jealous of the way the commu-

nity pulls together just a few kilometres tothe north in Table View and surroundswhere there has been a tremendous growthin the local neighbourhood watch and streetcommittees.How long it will take forMilnerton to real-

ise that this is the only way to go, is uncer-tain.Stander admits that the community and

the police should be pooling their resourcesand working together.“The community are our eyes and ears.

Without them there will be no witnesseswhen a suspect appears in court. Also, ifthey don’t look after their possessions by ac-tivating their alarms or leaving it on theircar seat then our job becomesmuchharder,”he says.Regarding the unfavourable statistics,

Stander emphasises that it is no surprise,since they work with it on a daily basis.

“It is a reality for us. We are worried abouthousebreakings in the Milnerton Centralarea and the more serious robberies in DuNoon and Joe Slovo. These two areas re-ceive special attention.”He adds that about 98 % of the murders

happened in one of these two areas.Stander reckons the best way to get the

crime under control in these areas is socialupliftment.“Living conditions there are dire in some

places. Various resources could be im-proved such as lighting and especially un-employment. In an ideal world we would

have a police station in Du Noon.”Milnerton’s statistics are roughly in line

with those in the province, with 22 catego-ries showing a dramatic increase as op-posed to 19 in Milnerton.The most serious of these increases (per-

centage increase in brackets) are murder(12.2%), attempted murder (40.9%), aggra-vated robbery (21.4%), illegal possession offirearm (21.4%), carjacking (45.6%), cash intransit robbery (114.3%), robbery at resi-dential premises (22.5%) and robbery atnon-residential premises (23.4%).Dan Plato,Western CapeMEC of Commu-

nity Safety, finds these increases “totallyunacceptable” and reckons one of the waysto keep the public in the loop is to releasestatistics more regularly.Says Plato: “Crime statistics provide a

measure of success of policing, but they arealso a valuable tool for responding to crimepatterns and directing valuable resourcesto where they aremost needed. This can on-ly be done by having access to statistics ona regular basis, so that various role-playerssuch as other government departments andcivil society can respond to the changingcrime patterns and help to prevent crime.”

ble.After Table View’s Lona Marais (47) was

“attacked and assaulted” by a 4x4 driverlast week Monday, her husband posted aheartfelt plea on an internet forum.“If anybody in the Blouberg/West Beach/

Table View area knows of a middle agedwhite male, overweight, with a newish sil-ver double cab 4x4 without number plates,please let me know. If the identified personis the person that attacked and assaultedmywife. Iwill pay aR50 000 rewardno ques-tions asked,” he wrote.Themessage was posted on various other

forums and soon the “hunt” for the driverwas on.The suspect handed himself in at the po-

lice station when he realised the uproar his

actions caused.Since then most media houses have re-

ported extensively on the incident.It has come to light that Marais and a

friendwere on a training ride onPerlemoenStreet in Bloubergstrand that morningwhen the suspect skipped a stop sign whiletalking onhis cellphone and almost collidedinto her.Marais shouted at him and then he alleg-

edly rolled down his window and started in-sulting her.Soon after he got out of his vehicle, spat

in her face, punched her arms, twisted onebehind her back and tried to force her intooncoming traffic.“Luckily all cars stopped and people tried

to intervene,” said the husband. “But every-body was too scared to approach this guyas he was screaming he would kill all cy-clists and everybody else.”The suspect will appear in court at the

end of this month, but the manner in whichpublic pressure resulted in theman turning

himself over to the police is noteworthy.“The benefits of social media cannot be

underestimated,” says Table View Neigh-bourhood Watch’s (TVNW) Gemma Rede-lingshuys.This neighbourhood watch has a blos-

soming Facebook page with thousands ofmembers.Almost daily someone will report an inci-

dent on the page and withinminutes peoplewill “be on the lookout”.Table View Police spokesperson Lt Eliza-

beth Munro agrees that social media is a“wonderful tool”, but she adds that itpresents a new challenge as well – regula-tion.“I’m very happy with TVNW’s page be-

cause Gemma usually phones me and veri-fies an incident before it is posted,” she ex-plains.“People like to add ‘tails’ to stories and

their opinions could turn something posi-tive into something negative, so one shouldbe careful,” she explains.

Recently Table View Lions Club sold cupsof soup at R10 each to raise funds for Penin-sula School Feeding Association (PSFA).It was also apparently a great public rela-

tions exercise as membership brochuresand Lions Club International videos weredisplayed for the public to peruse.According to the club not as many cups

were sold as anticipated, but every centhelps and the community were generous intheir monetary donations. The balance ofthe unsold soup was donated to TLC Out-reach Project for Street Children.PSFA remain committed to continuing

their service of feeding the 22 000 hungrychildren in 111 schools that do not receivethe subsidy. These schools are fed fromfunds raised through their various cam-paigns.The annual cost to feed these children

amounts to R8 690 000.Of the 111 schools, 67 have been “adopted”

by caring individuals and corporates for theyear ahead. The difference, amounting tomore than R4 800 000 has to be raised.

A Brooklyn family claims they are beingmistreated by the local police because theylive in the country as foreigners.The father of a family of six children (who

did not want to be named) was apparently“threatened” by aneighbourmore than twoweeks ago.According to the wife, her hus-band had to endure horrific threats and in-sults, but when they went to Maitland po-lice they were not helped.She said: “The police know exactly who

the suspect and the witness is, but they donothing because we are foreign. Our kidsare traumatised!”Three days after the initial incident the

suspect “completely destroyed” the win-dows of the family’s home and vehiclesparked on their property in the earlymorn-ing hours.Yet, according to thewife, the police have

still not reacted to the incidents.The spokesperson of Maitland police, W/

OSiyabulelaVukubi, is adamant that everymember of the public is respected by the po-lice, whether they are from this country ornot.“If anyone suspects that they are not be-

ing assisted in the correct manner theymust ask the officer on duty for their nameand take the matter to the station com-mander. There is also an independent bodywhere the police can be reported. I find itvery hard to believe that any officer woulddiscriminate against people because theyare a foreigner,” he says.DanPlato,WesternCapeMECofCommu-

nity Safety, says: “If anyone has a com-plaint about a member of the police refus-ing to open a case, they can report the mat-ter via Report-a-Cop on 021 483 4332, or SMSthe word REPORT to 35385 and a depart-ment official will call back to collect the de-tails, anonymously if needed.”

When the rusty-coloured caracal felineopened her eyes, the pain subsided for amoment and was replaced by surprise.The caracal (rooikat) was lying on the

back seat of a Mercedes.Within seconds she was doing her best

“don’t-you-dare” impression when a per-son tried to open the door.This seemed to work, because that face

contorted with fear.She can remember crossing theN7near

Melkbosstrand... feeling an unbearablepain shoot through her leg and then pass-ing out.Two people were peering through the

window this time. She hisses and spits.By the time the feline was darted by the

SPCA the inside of the car had lost theBattle of Claw and Seat.The story begins with a Canal Walk

businessman driving from Yzerfonteinon the N7.Unfortunately, he hit a caracal on his

way towards Cape Town and was facedwith a dilemma – should he drive on ortry to save the unconscious cat?He chose the latter.The man loaded the cat into his car on

the back seat and raced toHakunaMatataVeterinary Clinic in Bloubergstrand.Once he arrived he left one of the win-

dows slightly open and went in to informDr Carike van Loggerenberg of the newpatient.Much to everyone’s shock the feline

awoke from her slumber while he wasgone.Says Van Loggerenberg: “We informed

the SPCA and had to wait for them to ar-rive and dart her. Her back right leg was

broken. This kind of injury requires thatshe stays immobilised during aftercare,so the only thing the SPCA could do wasto put her down. It was very sad, but onemust look at the bigger picture.”Cape of GoodHope SPCA’swildlife unit

manager Brett Glasby says they had todart the animal through the gap in thewindow.“She was a wild animal and very defen-

sive. There was an extra element of dan-ger because the animal was injured,” heexplains.Both Van Loggerenberg andGlasby say

that the driver showed compassion to tryto help the animal, but that he didn’t goabout it in the right way.

Glasby says it was lucky the caracaldidn’t wake up while he was driving.“We really appreciate what the gentle-

man did. Not many people would do whathe did, but it would have been a very dan-gerous situation had the animal woke upwhile he was on the N7.“The wild cat could also have woken up

while he put it in the car.While we appre-ciate what he did, it is better to get some-one who is trained and able to do the han-dling,” says Glasby.According to him one can save the

SPCA’s number on one’s phone for quickaccess or one could phone theCity of CapeTown’s 107-number,who in turn could no-tify the SPCA.

The caracal’s close encounter with a Mercedes was his last.

TheMountain andTrail Enthusiasts(MATES), in partnership with theFriends of Blaauwberg Conserva-tion Area (BCA), will hold the thirdBCA Mates Trail Challenge in theBlaauwberg Nature Reserve on Sat-urday, 28 September.After the success of the previous

events, great interest is expected inthis year’s event.“There are a number of race

events in and around the TableMountain area and the Winelands,but this trail challenge is the onlyone that offers the opportunity torun through the Blaauwberg NatureReserve. With views of Table Moun-tain, Robben Island and Table Bay,participants can run either the15 km or the 8 km route. The routeswill run over the two hills, Blouberg-koppie and Kleinberg, and throughthe colourful spring vegetationwith-in the nature reserve,” says thecity’s mayoral committee memberfor economic, environmental andspatial planning, Garreth Bloor.The proceeds of the race will go to-

wards promoting the conservationof the reserve.Registration will start at 06:00,

with the longer 15 km race startingat 07:30. The 8 km race will start im-mediately afterwards, at 07:45.There are a limited number of en-

tries so pre-registration is a must.Participants can register using theform on the website and paymentcan be made via bank transfer. Theentry fee has been kept as low as pos-sible, and is R100 for the 15 km trailand R50 for the 8 km trail.Chairman of the Friends of BCA,

Roy Fuller-Gee, says: “Since the firstchallenge event in 2011,wehave seenrunners return each year to enjoytaking on the scenic route throughthe Blaauwberg Nature Reserve,which involves the Kleinberg andBlaauwberg Hills. Beach left spotless after school cleanupBefore Sinenjongo High School cleaned Sunset Beach.

While most people were tucked up in bedduring the rain storms last Saturday, 110learners from Joe Slovo Park were singingsongs of optimism as they made their wayto Sunset Beach inMilnerton for the annualInternational Coastal Cleanup Day.One look at the filthy beach, which was

made worse by the storms washing up litterfrom the ocean, and the learners knew they

had their work cut out for them.But they were up for the challenge!The event began with a safety talk about

what can and can’t be collected during thecleanup, then a group of youngsters dancedto their favourite beats on the Coca-Colagigrig stage. After the show, the learnerswere given shirts, caps, and gloves by Penin-sula Beverages and rubbish bags by Plastics

SA, then they made their way to the beachfor an hour and a half where they picked up179 bags of litter, weighing 1 074kg.The 350 metre stretch of beach was unrec-

ognisable after the learners tackled the litterproblem, and they worked up an appetite.PenBev then fed their hunger with well-

deserved fresh fruit and sandwiches, as wellas refreshments.

Denise Green, PenBev’s corporate socialinvestment manager comments: “We are soproud of the learners from Sinenjongo Highwho showed their dedication to the environ-ment by braving the cold to help clean thebeach.“We are passionate about environmental

issues and supportmany of these types of in-itiatives.”

Kuils River Hospital recently be-came Africa’s first and only ac-credited advanced heart care fa-

cility.This accolade was bestowed on the

hospital by the international AdultCongenital Heart Association (ACHA).

The hospital’s secret heart weapon?When Dr Lou Hofmeyr, an adult con-genital and structural heart diseasecardiologist from Milnerton, joined thehospital’s state-of-the art cardiac unit,the SA Endovascular Practice.

“This afforded the Netcare Kuils Riv-er Hospital (NKRH) the accreditation,”said Karen Eagle, the hospital’s spokes-woman.

AdvancedThe distinction between any other hospital’s cardiac

unit and the one now functional in Kuils River, is thefact that they offer advanced cardiology.

And it was Hofmeyr’s completion of an 18 month fel-lowship in 2012 thatmeant thehospitalmet all the crite-ria to obtain the accreditation which made it the onlyone on the continent with this honour.

“NKRH is the only facility in Africa to offer advancedcardiology recommendedby theACHA,”Hofmeyr said.

He explained that a number of requirements had tobe met to become Africa’s leader in ACHD. These in-cluded having an extended medical staff including sur-geons, intensive care specialists, imaging and anaes-thetic backup, as well as nursing staff, high care andICU facilities. Finally a structural heart and interven-tional cardiologist, such as himself specialising inACHD.

“A multi-specialised group of practitioners allowingthe practice to perform comprehensive medical and in-terventional cardiological services,” he said.

LeadersHofmeyr was clear about what his team wished to

achieve.“In time,weaim tobecome the leading

cardiac facility in the country, with pa-tients travelling from far to be treatedby this teamofmedical experts,”he said.

Ever heard of a baby born with a “holein the heart”? This is what Hofmeyr’sjob is all about. He explains.

“Congenital heart disease is a type ofbirth defect in one or more structures ofthe heart or blood vessels that occur be-fore birth.

“The most common congenital heartdisorders affecting adults include ab-normalities of the valves and vessels ofthe heart wall that develop with wearand tear on the heart, or through otherdisease processes,” he said.

Impressive“The most common type of congenital

heart disease include abnormal connections betweenthe right and left sides of the heart, such as holes inthe walls or obstructions in the normal pathways exit-ing the heart.”

Because of its super heart team, the hospital boastsan impressive number of cardiac treatments. These in-clude coronary artery disease, adult congenital heartdisease, peripheral vascular disease, structural heartdisease and valvular heart disease, Hofmeyr said.

“Advanced cardiology is offered not only to adultsbut teenagers and young adults with complex heart dis-ease. Education to people with congenital heart diseaseis also essential and is available in order to prolong andimprove quality of life,” Hofmeyr added.

He explained that Coronary Artery Disease is themost common type of heart disease and is one of theleading causes of death in South Africa.

Dear Cllr Brett Herron: AsMayco member for stormwaterI thought I should bring thisstory to your attention – goodand bad!When Cape Town wasdeluged on 29 August, our oldhouse, on the corner of Farn-worth and Donegal streets inRugby was directly affected.The water flooded the streetsto the extent it flowed into ourgarden – undermining ourfoundations and causing wallsto crack further.Here, a touch of history: Inorder to provide sufficientdrainage to the catchment areaof Wingfield and what is nowthe Century City wetlands,Rugby, Tygerhof, Ysterplaat,(strategically the Air Forcebase) and parts of Brooklynand Milnerton, the Wingfieldoutfall was built. After passingunder Koeberg Road theselarge stormwater pipes run...all the way to the beach southof the Lagoon Beach complex.Due to blockages furtherdown the pipes, on that day,the manholes were blown offby the force of the water andsevere flooding of the streetsresulted, as well as the soccerfields of the Portuguese Club. Ireported this to the City ofCape Town and a team wassent as a temporary solution.Weather forecasts on 14 and15 September predicted heavyweather for 19 and 20 Septem-ber, so on Monday the 16th Icontacted the city again. Thenext day a team arrived andstarted work.Initially they were non-plussed as to why the southernand centre manholes should befilled with water... the pumpassembly, used for irrigatingthe soccer fields of the Portu-guese Club gave clues. Insummer when the water tableis low, there would be littlewater flowing through theoutfall pipes, so a complicatedsystem of damming up thesouthern and centre pipes was

Encour-aged from an early age by his parents to stayon the straight and narrow path by workinghard while encompassing a strong sense ofmorals and discipline, Vinnie matriculatedfrom Mondale Secondary School and wenton to complete his National Diploma of In-formation Technology at the CPUT.As a youngster, Vinnie was an introvert,

spending most of his time reading comicbooks and playing video games. A nerd bydefinition. It was also at this early age thathe became captivated by the larger than lifespectacle that is professional wrestling.After completing his studies, he contacted

Shaun Koen and the AWA in March 2004.An opportunity would eventually come

when Vinnie competed against fellow chal-lenger William McQueen and then-champi-on Johnny Palazzio in the first ever laddermatch in June 2007. And even though he

wouldnot attain victory on that night,Vegaswould continue to press forward by compet-ing and perfecting his craft.He has become a two-time cruiserweight

A gap for rugby talentThe Western Province Rugby Football

Union has unveiled a new initiative toprovide much-needed educational sup-

port to young rugby hopefuls in the prov-ince.

The Western Province Rugby President’sTrust, launched at DHL Newlands on Tues-day 17 September, will provide bursaries, aswell as rugby training and development togifted young players who can’t afford prima-ry, secondary or tertiary schooling.

The brainchild of previous president, To-bie Titus, the trust has now come to life and

is set to change the lives of many childrenwho are eager to pursue a career in profes-sional rugby.

Unifying“There is no doubt that sport, and particu-

larly rugby, is a unifying force; one that canbring together the communities across theWestern Cape,” comments Thelo Wakefield,current president of the union and of thetrust.

“However, there are so many talentedyoung players that, while they have a natu-

ral aptitude for rugby, are unable to realisetheir full potential since they don’t have ac-cess to funds for schooling. The trust aimsto give an opportunity to these players, giv-ing them a well-rounded approach to theircareer.”

“Being a successful rugby player is aboutmore than just playing rugby,” commentsScarra Ntubeni, DHL Stormers and DHL WPplayer and speaker at the launch.

“It’s about having an educational frame-work – understanding the business of rugbyand how to build a career once your profes-

sional rugby days are over. The trust is a keyintervention, since it allows potential play-ers to acquire this knowledge to be success-ful.”

It is registered as a Section 18A non-profitorganisation, is funded through public dona-tions and will now be on the search for like-minded partners and donors to increase theopportunities for bursaries. These bursariesand development opportunities are open toany young rugby player between the ages ofsix and 21, who feels that he or she showsdemonstrable talent or potential.

This year’s Old Boys Rugby Tournament willbe hosted by Uni Milnerton Rugby Club atTheo Marais Park.

Milnerton Old Boys will be defending theirfourth title in as many years against Bos-mansdam, Table View and Rondebosch.

On Friday 27 September Table View will

face Rondebosch at 19:00 and MOB vs Bos-mansdam at 21:00. On Thursday 3 OctoberMOB and Rondebosch will lock horns at 19:00and Bosmansdam and Table View battle at21:00. Friday 11 October sees Bosmansdamand Rondebosch at 19:00 and MOB vs TableView at 21:00.

Cape Town is gearing up forspectacular skateboarding ac-tion over the next couple of dayswith two top pro skaters jettinginto the Mother City to partici-pate in a series of skateboard-ing demonstrations in the run-up to the Kimberley DiamondCup world skateboardingchampionships presented byKumba Iron Ore.

Silas Baxter-Neal, who wasnamed Thrasher magazine’sSkateboarder of the Year, andMike Anderson will be joiningthe Skateboarding for Hoperoad show.

The Skateboarding for Hopecommunity outreach pro-gramme is a joint initiative be-tween the Northern Cape pro-vincial government, KumbaIron Ore and Boogaloos, to pro-mote and grow the exciting

sport of skateboarding in SouthAfrica.

The initiative has been trav-elling the country during thepast three years and hastouched the lives of thousandsof South African youth.

Over 4 000 skateboards havebeen handed out to underprivi-leged kids across the country toenable them to embrace this ex-citing and fastest growingsport.

Today, wednesday the roadshow will move to ValhallaSkate Park for a demonstrationat 10:00 with a final street ses-sion scheduled for Cape Townafterwards. The Kimberley Dia-mond Cup will take place at theKumba Skate Plaza in Kimber-ley from 27 to 29 September.
