14 Immediately he made the disciples getinto the boat and go on ahead to the otherside, while he dismissed the crowds.23 And after he had dismissed the crowds,

he went up the mountain by himself topray. When evening came, he was therealone, 24 but by this time the boat, batteredby the waves, was far from the land, for thewind was against them. 25 And early in themorning he came walking toward them onthe sea. 26 But when the disciples saw himwalking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried outin fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke tothem and said, "Take heart, it is I; do not beafraid." 28 Peter answered him, "Lord, if it

Last week I wrote about a real crisis theenergy crisis - which includes theenvironmental and the conservation crisis asopposed to the Social Security “crisis” - whichhas been in the headlines for weeks.

The more I thought about it, the moreI realized that there are other real crises thatour nation is facing which are either goingunaddressed altogether or are being handled introubling ways. Many of them I have writtenabout for a long time, but when they are puttogether...

There is the real crisis, for instance, facing our nation's most vulnerable population-poor children and children of color. It has beensaid that one can judge the strength of a nationby how it treats its weakest citizens.Apparently, our political leadership does notsee it that way, however.

The federal budget resolution justpassed by Congress includes major cuts thatlow income children need to survive and thrivewhile establishing the size of tax cuts to bepassed later this year. For example, the SenateAgriculture Committee must cut $3 billion, much of which will come from food stamps.

Or, $24 billion must be removed fromthe budgets of Head Start, education, housingand nutrition programs for poor pregnant

women and their children. An additional $10billion must be cut from the Medicaid programwhich funds health care for the poorestfamilies and the disabled. This is what PastorWright has been writing about on the Pastor'sPage for three weeks. Have you been reading?Have you acted yet?

Then there is the education crisis facedby the nation's poorest children and those ofcolor. While the No Child Left Behind Act ofthe Bush administration might seem to addresstheir needs, the reality is something quitedifferent. The mechanisms of this law arebased on standardized testing (with its well-known problem of cultural bias) and then onpunishment and sanctions of schools in whichstudents do not succeed on tests.

The Harvard Civil Rights Projectrightly predicts that large urban school districtswill eventually be designated as failing sincemost of their schools will be so named. Whatthen?

Bill Gates, the co-founder ofMicrosoft, is so concerned about Americanhigh schools, that his Bill and Melinda GatesFoundation is investing millions of dollars inredesigning them. In a recent speech to U.S.governors, he said, “America's high schoolsare obsolete. By obsolete, I don't just meanthat our high schools are broken, flawed orunderfunded - though a case could be made forevery one of those points. By obsolete, I meanthat our high schools, even when they're

working exactly as designed, cannot teach ourkids what they need to know today.” Gateswent on to say that our high schools weredesigned, for the world of 50 years ago (someof us might say 100 years ago) where onlyone-third of graduates needed to be ready forcollege and work. He added, “The other two-thirds, most of them low-income and minoritystudents, are tracked into courses that won'tever get them ready for college or preparethem for a family-wage job, no matter howwell the students learn or the teachersteach.”

Then he said, “This isn't an accident ora flaw in the system; it is the system.” Whatnow?

In addition, when I think of the toughbudget cuts now being faced by dozens ofschool systems across the nation, I know thatthis is a real crisis. Here in Cleveland, where Ilive, we cut $100 million from the schools’budget last year, resulting in 1,000 staff cuts, including many classroom teachers.

Now the same system is being forcedto cut an additional $36 million only a yearlater. Nearby Akron is cutting over $50million this year. Even the more affluentsuburban school districts are facing schoolbudget cuts, many for the first time. And thisdoes not even begin to address the inequity ofschool funding in states like Ohio, which relyupon property taxes for school revenue andwhere our state legislature has simply ignored

PASTOR’S PAGE

the Ohio State Supreme Court's four rulingsthat such funding is illegal and inequitable.

Our children, especially our poorchildren, our urban and rural children and ourchildren of color are facing a very real crisiswhich will impact our nation and threaten ournational security in ways yet to be understood. What will it mean for our country in a decadewhen two thirds of the children attending highschool today will be unable to support theirfamilies?

Should we just build prisons right nextto the schools? How will a democracy survivein a country where many of its citizens cannoteven read the Constitution ....or a ballot? Howdo we live with ourselves when Medicaid cutsmean more poor children go without healthcare? What about the moral values of a nationwhich chooses to throw away millions of itschildren so that its wealthiest might receive taxcuts?

What is moral about leaving a nationaldebt of half a trillion dollars for our children topay off? This, I believe, is a very real crisis -an economic crisis, an educational crisis - amoral crisis - not for our children, but for us.

We NEED You!

Your pastor, your church and theentire Media Department of Trinity UnitedChurch of Christ need you to spread the word!

For well over ten years, Trinityprovided the Chicagoland viewing audiencewith one full hour of power. For well over tenyears, members of this church, friends ofTrinity and many, many others were blessed toget the genius of Rev. Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright,Jr. We were blessed and provided ministry tobe a blessing to several thousands in theChicagoland viewing area.

We thank God for all who watched usand worshiped with us during that period oftime. As we all know, however, “to everythingthere is a time and a season.” The season haschanged. We were blessed to have faithfulviewers during the WJYS season. As faithfulas our viewers were, however, their viewingdid not generate any revenue.

Your church spent well over twomillion dollars airing that prime time Mondaynight worship service. Within those ten years, two million dollar expense, we did notgenerate one-tenth of the expense in revenue. Our viewers failed to plant a seed in thisministry. They failed to purchase the sermonsor support the ministry of the churchfinancially. Life was made very easy for theviewers, as they taped the services andsermons, week in and week out.

Because we are blessed to have Dr.Wright as our pastor, and so many othersacross the globe long to be blessed by themessages God gives him, we remainedprayerful for ten years. Our prayer was forGod to lead us to minister, at least nationally,in God’s own time.

As the ministry of Dr. Wright grew, preaching and lecturing 40+ weeks out of eachyear in all areas of the world, more peopleoutside of these walls called Trinity UnitedChurch of Christ constantly prayed and askedwhy they could not get Dr. Wright on any oftheir religious broadcast programming. Severalothers began working on securing PastorWright and Trinity on national programming.

Because God is faithful, Trinity is nowable to share the liberation theology preachedthrough the man of God, Jeremiah A. Wright,Jr., with the nation! What a blessing thisnational ministry has already been to thechurch, within one month!

Monetary gifts, tape series orders, book sales, Trumpet Newsmagazines, etc., comein daily! We receive more calls now for orderson any given Sunday or Tuesday morning thanwe would receive within an entire month whilewe were broadcasting on WJYS. To God bethe glory!

We are encouraging our faithfulviewers who would plan their Mondayevenings around the ministry of Trinity UnitedChurch of Christ to subscribe to the tape

ministry. We have had monthly tapesubscribers (many living out of the country)for the past 15 years.

Understanding change is never easy,we ask you to please help us make thistransitional season of change a much easierone. Support the ministry of media and help usreach the masses. Please continue to pray forus, as we strive to do the Will of God andshare the Man of God with the world, and notsimply confine him to this small Chicagolandviewing area.

God bless you!

Deacon Jeri L. Wright, Media Director and the entire Media Department of Trinity

Dear Trinity Member:I am writing you on the day the

bulletin goes to print and by Sunday, May22nd, it may be too late, but I am alerting youon the day I found out about this. Urgentaction is required by the members who havecomputers and internet access.

Your voice and the voices of yourfriends and church members are urgentlyneeded this week to prevent several judicialnominees with troubling civil rights recordsfrom being hastily seated for life on some ofour nation's highest courts. Unless moderateSenators come up with a last minutecompromise, Senate Majority Leader Bill Fristappears ready to make good on his threat to

end the tradition of checks and balances whichpreserves minority rights in the Senate. It isanticipated that debate will begin on judicialfilibusters and the appellate court nomineesPriscilla Owens and Janice Rogers Browntoday, Wednesday morning, May 18th. Fromthere, the action will quickly shift to VicePresident Cheney who, as President of theSenate, will be asked to rule that only 51 votesare needed for U.S. circuit court of appeals andSupreme Court nominations. This rulingmakes it likely that the Senate will confirmthese two nominees and sets the stage for anultra-conservative Supreme Court nomineelater this year.

Beyond what happens with anyindividual judicial nominees, what is really atstake in protecting the filibuster is theguarantee that diverse points of view will beheard. Ninety-five percent of President Bush'sjudicial nominees have been confirmed. Thosenominations, which have been held up by thefilibuster under Senate rules, have beendelayed for good reason. Time is running out.

ALPHA KAPPAALPHA SORORITY/

DR. MARY H. WRIGHT

Today, as a culmination of the Women’s Conference, Women’s Week and ourcelebration of women, the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha are honoring my mother, Dr.Mary H. Wright.

The women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority have gathered today to worship with usat the first service and to pay tribute to one of the greatest women of God it has ever beenmy pleasure to meet (my Mom! smile).

When I invited my mother to come from Philadelphia to Chicago to celebrate withher sorors on this day she said she would try her best, depending on the amount of pain shewas in and depending on her ability to travel. Her absence here today lets you know thatshe was not physically able to make the trip.

She called to express her thanksgiving to the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha and toexpress her sorrow for not being able to be here in person. She asked me to thank hersisters for her.

I want to thank the women of Alpha Kappa Alpha for honoring my mother. I wantto thank them for honoring me by honoring her and I want to thank them for upholding thehigh standards of their sorority as they continue to serve God and God’s people.

Gratefully yours,

Pastor Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr. and Dr. Mary Henderson Wright

Misplaced priorities can causemisery. In this country, our priorities aremisplaced. This country spends obsceneamounts of money to push and propel awar that was declared on deception. Thiscountry continues to approve tax breaksand policies which make the rich richer, while the poor continue to languish inpoverty. On the other end of thespectrum, this same country refuses toplace the same effort and concern onissues affecting persons living with theHIV/AIDS pandemic. This countryrefuses to place the same effort on issuesconcerning the healing of diseases, because the treating of disease symptomskeeps the finances flowing into thepockets of the pharmaceutical companies.I tell you, we have misplaced priorities. We would rather build bombs to kill thanfind cures for diseases in order to heal.Misplaced priorities!

Our misplaced priorities also applyin the matter of hunger. In this countryalone, there are 36 million people at riskof hunger. This means that 36 millionpeople are either skipping meals or eating

less in order to try to make ends meet. This number includes 13 million children. For years, we as a church, have joined inwith Bread For The World, and otherorganizations urging Congress to endhunger. I urge you to do the same todayby signing the letter which will bedistributed during service calling onCongress to make hunger a priority.

Have you ever played hide and seek? Mostchildren have. For me, the most exciting partwas when the person who was “it” uncoveredhis or her eyes and shouted, “Ready or not, hereI come!” That’s when the game really begins. The hiding is just like setting up pieces on achess board. The players would have to be readyat that time for fear of getting found.

Many of us postpone donating time, talent andtreasure completely, waiting for “just the righttime,” which seems to be always moving aheadbecause we rarely reach it. And many others dotry to practice good stewardship, but again, “justdon’t think they’re ready” to raise theircommitment to their church when asked.

But the needs of the church and community willnot wait. They call out, “Ready or not, here wecome!”

Children need tutoring and supplies now tosucceed in school. Shut-ins need visits to relievetheir loneliness. The hungry need a food pantrynow, and so on. Shouting, “Time out! I’m notready!” might work in hide and seek, but not inthe real world. These needs, and many others, must be met. So as Christians, we have to “getready, set and go” out to all the world and give.
