Sales Management CommentsAs Canada’s longest running Simmental fall consignment sale we have been very proud to have been involved throughout its evolution. Things have changed incredibly over the years, mostly with different associa-tions, clubs and groups that have been involved. One thing that has never changed is the solid reputation for quality that Simmsational is known for nationally and beyond.

Absolutely without exaggeration, the LaBatte Simmentals “mini-produc-tion” is always the opportune chance for outlying programs to advance themselves by acquisitioning a heifer from a source that has proven itself genetically, professionally and as committed as maybe the business has ever seen. The consistent “look” and “type” that proudly carry the “IPU” tattoo is really an amazing feat that continues to enhance not only the home-herd but the breed on a whole. Take notes here on how to be a registered cattle breeder.

We add a very nice feature to Simmsational with a second “mini” this year. It comes from the Boon family’s Lazy Bar B outfit! I can vouch for the program in a big way that it is no-nonsense and as respected in the commercial sector as a source for bulls that has gathered a very loyal repeat customer base. They have been a mainstay and more-so, a leader, of the Advantage Bull Sales held each March in Saskatoon. Maybe this ranch has introduced the PFRA market to Simmental bulls as good as any. The likeable demeanor and logical aspect that is taken to breeding Simmental cattle has begun to pay dividends and rightly so. This set of bred heifers all carry service to a proven calving ease bull that does more than just sire live calves. His one daughter, the solo heifer calf consigned, attests to this!

We have bulls once again consigned as a necessary avenue to facilitate some of the consignors who wish to showcase this side of the herd. Historically, fall consignment sales, including Simmsational, had top bull calves on offer for the producer, registered or commercial, that are savvy enough to seize the opportunity to get a head-start on their bull shopping.

I think the ability to raise quality bulls is a good topic to build off of here. Just look at the list of long-time to recent consignors and see the correla-tion to some of the most reputable bull sales not only in Saskatchewan but Canada-wide! It is these type of females that they offer here that produce their success on the bull-front. The fortunate side is they have enough herd depth to release these females to enhance other producers marketing prowess.

Welcome to Simmsational 2014 at Johnstone Auction Mart, Moose Jaw, SK. on Thursday, December 11th. This is the 37th consecutive sale and we have consigned to all of them. Wow! How time flies. This is an exciting time in the cattle business as it was when we held our first Simmsational Sale in 1977. In 2014 we are seeing record prices for cows, bulls and calves. A few years ago I predicted we would see $.90/lb cows and $2.00/lb calves in the near future. Well it finally arrived and now we’re seeing $1.30/lb cows, $1.50/lb bulls and $2.80/lb calves. I congratulate all the com-mercial cattle people who hung on in lean times and are now reaping the rewards. The cattle industry looks like it’s in for many good years as the cattle numbers are still low in Canada and the U.S.

We are again consigning ten bred heifers from the heart of our program. Six soggy, broody, red heifers, including two baldies. They are all bred to the $40,000 homo polled Kuntz Sheriff 8A bull that was purchased by Bonchuk Farms and Semex. LaBatte Simmentals was the contending bidder on Sheriff. We were fortunate enough to purchase two of the three semen packages that were offered for the 2014 breeding season. The four black heifers in the sale are featured by the two outstanding Liner 56U daughters, a soggy, broody, Stubby heifer and a showy Tula 1R daughter. These heifers are all A.I bred and have no exposures.

We are starting off our sale offering with an awesome Lotto heifer. She is deep bodied, thick, as broody as they come, very nice fronted, is setting up a beautiful udder and is mated to the $40,000 Kuntz Sheriff bull. She is solid red and is out of two black parents which would make her a non diluter. We think this heifer is going to be a front pasture cow. She has the broodiness, style and power to raise those top bulls and females.

This is the first IPU Code Red 53Y bred heifer we have ever offered for sale and she is a good one. Her mother is a Red Chief granddaughter with some Fleck influence. He is a performance bull that we decided to keep from our 2011 calf crop and we haven’t been disappointed. This is one of our feature black heifers. Sired by Springcreek Liner 56U and out of a great, solid black Gunner dam. The 56U’s are making tremendous young cows, they have excellent udders, calve well and breed back. We think they are going to be like the Red Chief – produce. The 15A heifer is moderate, soggy, thick, very broody and has excellent feet and legs. She’s bred early to the calving ease specialist, WFL Absolute, that Rancier Farms have used so successfully in their program.

I think this group of bred heifers and the heifer calf we have brought are a true representation of our cow herd and the direction we are heading. Hilltop Holdings came about a little over a year ago, after a phone conversation between Gary and Kim and Darcy. This phone call resulted in us partnering on 21 black and red Sim-mental cows to calve in 2014. Females were purchased from LaBatte, Spring Creek and Sunny Valley with plans to further build from this base. These cows are run at the Anwender Ranch alongside their well known and established purebred Shorthorn herd near Radville, SK. You’ll notice a lot of Spring Creek breeding on the bottom side of our pedigrees as we focused on buying some good young cows from Brian to start our herd. This young red bull is the result of one of those purchases. To our knowledge, this will be the first bull calf off of the famous Captain Morgan sire to sell at public auction and we think he is a good one! He has some great cow families on both sides of his pedigree with Pepsi and Black Jenna on the top side and being out of a good, young Spring Creek cow that is a direct daughter of Brian’s high selling red cow from his 2013 female sale. This bull’s dam has done a tremendous job raising this guy. He’s an extremely long spined, good topped bull that has shown good performance with an actual weaning weight of 895 lbs on August 27, after starting out with an 86 lb birth weight. Wrap that performance up in an eye-appealing, deep, dark, red hair coat with a really easy going disposition and we have a calf that we are proud to sell as our first ever consignment to this prestigious sale. Bubba is a soggy, soft middled, thick haired beef machine. Although he has a little larger birth weight, he will still have calving ease from Stubby. Should any purchaser fail to settle for his purchase Transcon Livestock Corp. reserves full power to resell the animal to the best advantage either publicly or privately, without further notice. Any loss arising from such resale together with keep and all other expenses shall be payable by the defaulter. All settlements must be made with the clerks of the sale before any cattle will be released.BID - Every animal consigned to the sale must be sold by auction.
