On Monday, March 1, a will premiere one of our new productions, Dolley Madison, a 90-minute portrait of the woman who transformed the previously undefined role of the President’s wife and became America’s “first” First Lady. The show will air as part of the American Experience series.

These days, Dolley Madison might not be a household name, but in her time, she was renowned. She lived through two wars, knew the first twelve Presidents, and watched America evolve from a struggling young republic to the first modern democracy in the world. At a time when women could neither vote nor participate officially in politics, Dolley, wife of the fourth president James Madison, became one of the most influential and best loved figures of her day. When she died in 1849 at the age of 81 – as one of the last remaining members of the founding generation – Washington City honored her with the largest state funeral the capital had ever seen.

The show follows in a’s tradition of exploring the American Revolution with shows like Liberty! and Alexander Hamilton. In choosing Dolley Madison as the subject of the next show in this vein, a Executive Producer Catherine Allan notes that in previous programs, the people at the center of the story were men. She and Middlemarch Films Producer and Director Muffie Meyer wanted to focus on the women’s stories.

Allan says, “Dolley Madison appealed to us because she was a powerful and influential public figure at a time when women were excluded from politics. She achieved this by taking the traditional feminine roles of her day – including wife and hostess – and playing them to the hilt . Not only did she become the country’s first great political hostess – bringing people of both political parties together at the White House during one of the most bit terly divided periods in Washington politics – she promoted the feminine values of civility, cooperation and empathy.”

Dolley Madison looks at both Dolley’s public achievements and at her private life and explores how under her influence, the ill defined role of the President’s wife became a public position for the first time. “Dolley very consciously cooked up a formula” says First Lady biographer Carl Sferrazza Anthony, “one that straddled the line between queen and commoner and which ultimately became the formula for a genuinely successful First Lady in her time and ours.”2Monday,March1,8pm;Sunday,March7,7pm

PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

One of the things that we are most proud of at a

is our commitment to civic engagement, public

affairs and news programming. If a free press is

vital to democracy, then I know that a and PBS

play key roles in that equation. From Almanac, to

the PBS NewsHour, to Frontline, the work we do is

unparalleled.

Many of you have heard recently that PBS has

decided to discontinue two popular journalism

shows, NOW on PBS and Bill Moyers Journal – a

move that has caused some concern.

I am fortunate to sit on PBS's Board of Trustees,

and I assure you that neither PBS's nor a's

commitment to journalism has wavered. In fact,

PBS is redoubling its commitment, with news

and public affairs as the centerpiece of its new

strategic plan. Refreshing the PBS NewsHour and

strengthening its online presence was the first

step. This change, with Moyers and NOW on Friday

nights, is the second step.

We have known that Bill Moyers wanted to slow

down the pace of his work for a number of years. In

fact, he had talked with PBS about retiring earlier,

but we just wouldn't let him go! As for NOW, as

you know, PBS has very limited resources. The PBS

executives chose to reinvest the funds we were

providing to NOW into a brand new series, Need to

Know, which will premier this May.

Need to Know will be a one-hour program broadcast

every Friday evening and will be produced by PBS

station WNET in New York. It is my hope – as well

as yours I suspect – that it will carry on the great

tradition and high standards set by two of our

country's best journalists: Bill Moyers and David

Brancaccio. And who knows, David and Bill may not

really be gone from PBS.

First-rate and impartial public affairs programming is at the core of who we are as a station. All the changes that the media landscape has undergone in the past few years can be confusing, but you can rest assured that great journalism will always have a home here on a.

Each year, hundreds of people find hope through a handful of organizations across the

country that train service dogs for people with disabilities. Through a Dog's Eyes follows the

journey of recipients as they go through the heartwarming and sometimes difficult process of

receiving and becoming acclimated to a service dog. Jennifer Arnold, founder of one of the nation’s

largest service dog organizations, Canine Assistants, details her unique teaching methods, giving

viewers an intimate look at the canine-recipient matching process. The program offers inspiring,

hopeful stories that show how dogs can affect everyone’s life and how, with a little patience and a

lot of love, an “ordinary” dog can show how extraordinary he or she is.
