Albert Glynn from Roscrea and JamesSherlock from Athlone, have togetherdesigned a hydro-turbine engine sys-tem that enables people to harnesselectricity from the natural flow of wa-ter in minor rivers, streams, weirs andsluice gates.Their innovative and creative thinkinghas resulted in a fledgling but hugelypromising Business called “Ár Nua-TEC” which has gained anomination(Business category) on theshortlist for the prestigious DavidManley Emerging EntrepreneurAwards sponsored by the DublinChamber of Commerce.

Lateral thinking seems to come natu-rally to Anthony Glynn, who studiedRenewable Energy Development at

LIT.Tipperary (formerly TipperaryInstitute.) During the course of theprogramme Anthony developed hisinitial concept and has gone on to pur-sue his dreams of devising new waysof generating electricity for rural com-munities at a reasonable cost.The combined innovative spirit andcreative thinking embodied by the dy-namic duo have resulted in the devel-opment of a micro-hydro turbineengine called “DUNK-E”which givespeople the choice of generating theirown electricity by harnessing the ener-gy provided by natural resources. Theturbine has yet to be patented. Antho-ny claims that the main advantages of“Dunk-E” combine energy savingswith cost efficiency and has applica-tions both within Ireland and abroad,including developing countries.

John O’Shaughnessy, Managing Di-rector of Clancy Construction, waselected President of Thurles Cham-ber at the recent AGM held inThurles.John takes over from PJ Shanahan ofTim Looby Associates, who com-pleted two packed years at the helmof Thurles Chamber. JohnO’Shauughnessy tells us that “PJworked tirelessly during his twoyears as President of the Chamberand had some significant successduring his tenure with the officialopening of Thurles Chamber Enter-prise Centre (TCEC) which was ajoint venture between ThurlesChamber and LIT, the installation ofthe CCTV system to the town ofThurles and the reduction of theChamber debt to name a few. All ofthese were significant achievementsfor Thurles Chamber during a timeof deep recession. County Tipperary Athletics Boardis 90 Years Old

We’re delighted to see new business-es emerging throughout Tipperary asshoots of recovery start to appear.This week we talk to Joe Corcorcanwho launched Curryquinn Eggs lastNovember.

Joe worked in Galmoy Mines for over13 years but like many others acrossthe county, was made redundant in2009. As Joe explained “I looked forwork for months but the recessionhad just kicked in and it was impossi-ble to get any work. There was littlework I could apply for and I wasn’tgetting anywhere so I started lookingat the food industry, as I had alwaysbeen interested in food. I had a limit-ed amount of land so I couldn’t makeenough of an income from cattle andtraditional farming. While I wasthinking about a food business, I reada story in The Farmers Journal abouta new EU directive that was going tochange Irish egg production and themore I looked into eggs, the more itseemed like the perfect business forme.”

It took Joe over 2 years to finish hismarket research, business plan andsource funding. Building of the stateof the art facility beside his homecommenced in May 2012 and Joe

started selling the first eggs in No-vember 2013. It’s been a huge learn-ing curve for Joe but he has lovedevery minute of it. The business start-ed with 1,000 hens but due to demandfrom customers, has now increased toover 2,000 hens laying daily.

Joe has been delighted with the sup-port he has got to date from acrossNorth Tipperary and is now supplyingeggs to all great food retailers withina 20 mile radius of Dolla (includingNenagh, Thurles, Silvermines, Tem-plederry, Borrisoleigh, Ardcronery,Ballycommon and Puckane). As wellas shops and butchers, CurryquinnEggs are getting great support fromhotels, restaurants, nursing homes andof course the great bakers of NorthTipperary. Joe believes the support isdown to locals loving to support localfood produce and the quality of thefresh Tipperary egg he is producing.Joe was also greatly encouraged bythe help provided by Rita Guinan andEleanor Forrest of the North Tipper-ary County Enterprise Board.

More relax-ation techniques, negative self-talk islethal, creating a dangerous, irra-tional and negative fantasy world.She also outlines a process of autogen-ics (autogenic training is a relaxationtechnique developed by the Germanpsychiatrist Johannes HeinrichSchultz), which seems easy to practice.Because this is so effective, there is awarning that it might be unsafe forpeople with diabetes, low blood sugarlevels and heart conditions. The reasonfor this warning is that blood pressuremay suddenly drop because of theseautogenic exercises. Similarly, if youfeel anxious during or following theexercises it is best to avoid them. Thefollowing is a basic idea of one exercise-Sit in the meditative posture and scanthe bodyMy right arm is heavyMy left arm is heavy.Both of my arms are heavy.My right leg is heavy.My left leg is heavy,Both of my legs are heavy.My arms and legs are heavy and warm(Repeat three or more times)

My heartbeat is calm and regular(repeat 3 times)My solar plexus is warm (repeat 3times)My forehead is coolMy neck and shoulders are heavy(repeat 3 times)I am at peace (repeat 3 times)

While the workbook by Martha Davisand her colleagues is very useful,Bourne’s workbook is one that I wouldstrongly recommend that you have onyour bookshelf. It has over 400 pagesof extremely helpful material. It wouldbe useful for people suffering fromanxiety or for counsellors dealing withthose who have this painful condition.It is particularly good on self-talk(chapter 8). Negative self-talk is closelylinked to our beliefs and assumptions,which have roots in our childhood. Forexample, the belief ‘I am worthless’comes from an abusive childhood. Ifchildren do not experience love fromsomeone, they feel unlovable andworthless. This core belief is firmlyplanted in their core and becomes man-ifest in adulthood.At the beginning of this series of arti-cles I have already mentioned negativeself-talk, but let us explore it furtherhere. We have seen that negative self-talk (‘what ifs’) brings us into a fantasyworld that strengthens anxiety. Thisfantasy world is built on a foundation ofnegative self-talk. It has roots of nega-tive self-talk. It is important for us tobecome aware of our negative self-talk(that destructive monologue that goeson incessantly in our mind), because ina way it can lie outside our awareness.

I believe that it is a mechanical andinstinctive response that has been bredin our core from childhood. It mayseem based in reality, but it is irrational.People suffering from anxiety, phobia,or panic live in this irrational world.When we live in this irrational, nega-tive world, it is no wonder that we areactively avoiding situations in the realworld. For example, if we think that weare going to blush on a particular occa-sion, we may remain away. Similarly,if we manage to attend this particularoccasion we may get the irrationalthought ‘suppose I panic’. The veryword ‘panic’ may bring on the physicalsymptoms of a panic attack. Such nega-tive thinking is a fertile ground for thenoxious weed of anxiety and panic. Itenvisages the worst possible scenario.

Series 4, no. 19. Anxiety. challengingnegative self-talk and irrational ide-as. Alpha brainwaves.If we have developed into adults besetby negative and irrational self-talk, wemust learn to confront them. We, there-fore, become aware of each negativethought and challenge it. Examine thetype of words you are using in thisinner dialogue. Look at phrases such as‘I must do something or the conse-quences will be disastrous’, if I blushpeople will think I am stupid and fear-ful’, ‘if I falter in my speech people willridicule me and think that I am a fool’,and so on. Confront such thoughts with‘how do I know what people are think-ing’, ‘so what’, ‘what they think is notgoing to kill me’, and so on. Realise,too, how harmful such thoughts are. Doyou really want to torture yourself withsuch irrational thoughts? Do you reallywant to make yourself miserable? Partof identifying your negative thoughts isto take time to look at them. Writethem down so that you can see howirrational they are.
