One night a teenage girl brought hernew boyfriend home to meet her par-ents, and they were appalled by hisappearance: leather jacket, motorcy-cle boots, tattoos and pierced nose.Later, the parents pulled their daugh-ter aside and confessed their concern."Dear," said the mother diplomatical-ly, "he doesn't seem very nice.""Oh please, Mom," replied the daugh-ter, "if he wasn't nice, why would hebe doing 500 hours of communityservice?"
A guy walks into a post office oneday to see a middle-aged, baldingman standing at the counter methodi-cally placing "Love" stamps on brightpink envelopes with hearts all overthem. He then takes out a perfumebottle and starts spraying scent allover them. His curiosity getting the better ofhim, he goes up to the balding manand asks him what he is doing. Theman says, "I'm sending out 1,000Valentine cards signed, 'Guess who?'""But why?" asks the man.
"I'm a divorce lawyer," the man re-plies.
A fourth class teacher was giving herpupils a lesson in logic."Here is the situation," she said. "Aman is standing up in a boat in themiddle of a river, fishing. He loseshis balance, falls in, and beginssplashing and yelling for help. Hiswife hears the commotion, knows hecan't swim, and runs down to thebank. Why do you think she ran tothe bank?"A girl raised her hand and asked, "Todraw out all his savings?"
Joe the lawyer died suddenly, at theage of 45. He got to the gates ofHeaven, and the angel standing theresaid, "We've been waiting a long timefor you.""What do you mean?" he replied. "I'monly 45, in the prime of my life. Whydid I have to die now?""45? You're not 45, you're 82," re-plied the angel."Wait a minute. If you think I'm 82,then you have the wrong guy. I'm on-
ly 45. I can show you my birth certifi-cate.""Hold on. Let me go check," said theangel, and disappeared inside. After afew minutes the angel returned."Sorry, but by our records you are 82.I checked all the hours you havebilled your clients, and you have tobe 82..."
A retiring farmer in preparation forselling his land, needed to rid hisfarm of animals. So he went to everyhouse in his town.To the houses where the man is theboss, he gave a horse. To the houseswhere the woman is the boss, a chick-en was given. He got toward the end of the streetand saw a couple outside gardening."Who's the boss around here?" heasked."I am." said the man."I have a black horse and a brownhorse," the farmer said, "which onewould you like?"The man thought for a minute andsaid, "The black one.""No, no, no, get the brown one." theman's wife said."Here's your chicken." said the farm-er.

According to RGData the“multiplier effect” meansthat €1 spent locally isworth €4 while €1 spend ina global chain is worth afraction of that.
How the Multiplier Effect works
A really basic example of how themultiplier effect works and helpsthe local economy is as follows;
I go to my local electrical shop onemorning and spend €100 on someelectrical appliance. Later thatmorning the owner of the electricalshop goes to the local garage andpays for €100 worth of long over-due maintenance to his car. The me-chanic has a Christmas partycoming up and needs some newclothes so he goes to the localclothes shop and spends €100. Theowner of the clothes shop goes tothe local hair salon and spends €100on a beautiful new upstyle forChristmas. The hairdresser visitsthe local butcher and buys €100worth of meat…… This story couldkeep going on and on re-spending/recycling the same moneythroughout the community. In thisvery basic example €500 has beenspent in the local economy (ofcourse the figures are rounded offfor convenience, but hopefully youget the basic idea) Now just sup-pose I bought my electrical appli-
ance online from overseas orinstead of supporting the local trad-er I went to a large foreign ownedmultinational?
You may say that you get bettervalue for money buying online or inthe multinationals. That’s fairenough. Everybody is looking forthe best value they can. But largenumbers of people making a con-scious effort to spend an extra bitlocally can and does make a differ-ence. For instance, instead of oneperson spending €100 we couldbreak it down into 10 people spend-ing an extra €10 or 20 peoplespending an extra €5 locally. Imag-ine the over 40,000 readers of theTipp Tatler spending just an extra€10 or €20 with small independentretailers. That’s not an extra €10 onwhat you would already be spend-ing, that’s just spending it locallyinstead of giving it to some globalcorporation to divide up amongsttheir shareholders.
Local businesses support communi-ties, they employ local tradespeo-ple, they buy local goods andservices, they support local clubsand sporting bodies,
Just ask yourself the next time yougo to buy something “Will the mon-ey I spend on this item make itsway back into my community. Orwill it leave the country and provideno benefit whatsoever to me, myfamily, my friends or neighbours.

1. Local Economic Stimulus.
When you purchase at locally ownedbusinesses rather than nationallyowned, more money is kept in thecommunity because locally-ownedbusinesses often purchase from otherlocal businesses and service provid-ers . Purchasing local helps grow oth-er businesses.
2. Non Profits Receive GreaterSupport.
Local business owners donate moreto local charities than non-local own-ers.
3. Unique Businesses Create Char-acter & Prosperity
The unique character of your localcommunity is defined in large part bythe business that reside there, andthat plays a big factor in your overallsatisfaction with where you live andthe value of your home and property.
4. Environmental Impact Is Re-duced.
Small local business usually set upshop in the town/village centre, pro-viding a centralized variety that ismuch friendlier to a community'swalk score than out of town shoppingmalls. This generally means contrib-uting less to sprawl, congestion, habi-tat loss and pollution.
5. Most New Jobs Are Provided ByLocal Businesses.
Small local businesses are the largestemployers nationally. Plus the morejobs you have in your local commu-nity the less people are going to have
to commute which means more timeand less traffic and pollution.
6. Customer Service Is Better.
Local businesses often hire peoplewith more specific product expertisefor better customer service. You arealso going to see these people aroundtown and they are less likely to berude because they have to face youday after day.
7. Local Business Owners Invest InCommunity.
Local businesses are owned by peo-ple who live in the community, are less likely to leave, and are moreinvested in the community's welfareand future.
8. Public Benefits Far OutweighPublic Costs.
Local businesses require compara-tively little infrastructure and moreefficiently utilize public services rela-tive to chain stores.
9. Competition And DiversityLeads To More Consumer Choices.
A marketplace of thousands of smallbusinesses is the best way to ensureinnovation and low prices over thelong-term.
10. You Matter More
We talk a lot about exerting influencewith your purchasing choices, or"voting with your wallet." It's a factthat business respond to their custom-ers but your values and desires aremuch more influential to your localcommunity business than the largechain stores.
10 Reasons To Shop Locally& Support Independent Retailers
When I was a young man, I wantedto change the world. I found it wasdifficult to change the world, so Itried to change my nation. When Ifound I couldn't change the nation, Ibegan to focus on my town. I couldn'tchange the town and as an older man,I tried to change my family.
Now, as an old man, I realize the on-ly thing I can change is myself, andsuddenly I realize that if long ago Ihad changed myself, I could havemade an impact on my family. Myfamily and I could have made an im-pact on our town. Their impact couldhave changed the nation and I couldindeed have changed the world.
I could have changed the World

Ireland Reaching Out And TheGAA Team Up
Ireland Reaching Out (Ireland XO)and the GAA will launch aninnovative pilot programme aimed atattracting members of the IrishDiaspora to the GAA club networkworldwide in San Francisco onSunday next, December 4. Thesimple idea is that as parish
communities around Ireland identifypeople connected with their parishthrough their genealogical research, they introduce them through theIreland XO organisation to the nearestinternational GAA club so that theycan learn about, and possiblyparticipate in Irish sporting culture, well away from Ireland. Over 450GAA clubs are now in existenceoutside of Ireland around the world. The pilot project will be launched byGAA President Christy Cooney, andIreland XO Chairman, Mike Feerick,at a special brunch event at theTreasure Island GAA facilities. Theevent is being held in conjunctionwith the visit of the 2011 HurlingAll-Stars to San Francisco. Leadingmembers of the Irish technologycommunity in Silicon Valley will alsoattend the event. It is hoped thatshould the project prove successful inSan Francisco, it will be rolled out toall GAA clubs worldwide.

It’s fresh. Buying local food meansthere is less time between when yourfood was harvested and when it getsto your table.
It’s better for the environment. Localfoods require less packaging andtravel less distances, saving on wasteand pollution.
It’s better for you. Local foods aremore nutritious: food loses vitaminsand minerals as it ages.
It supports local economy. Buyingfrom local farmers supports business-es in your community, aiding theoverall local economy.
It creates access to food experts.Buying local food creates the oppor-tunity for you to build a relationshipwith your food supplier, learningabout what he or she knows best—food.

A Big Welcome, that’s theMessage from the Market Townof Nenagh this Christmas
It is a Christmas tree festival and itserves two purposes 1: It raises badlyneeded funds to repair the roof of StMary’s and 2: It promotes local business-es, schools, charities and organisationswithin the community.
So what is a Christmas tree festival ?
Groups, charities, organisations ,schools ,individuals , businesses, are invited toprovide and decorate a Christmas treewhich has to include some promotionalinformation about themselves and alsokeep to a theme which for our first festi-val is The twelve days of Christmas.
The decorated trees are then put on dis-play inside or outside St Mary’s and anadmission charge is made for members ofthe public to view the trees. It is hopedthat there will be some entertainment dur-
ing each day of the festival which endson the Sunday with a community carolservice.
The Christmas Tree Festival will take parton the following dates and times, whichcoincide with the late night Christmasshopping in Tipperary Town.
Wed 14th Dec 2pm - 6pm launch of festi-valThurs 15th Fri 16th Sat 17th 1pm - 5pmSat 7th 7.30pm Concert by The TipperaryGospel singersSunday 18th 1pm - 2.30 pm Carol Serv-ice 3pm with the CJ Kickham band
There is no charge for displaying aChristmas tree , Monday the 12th andTuesday the 13th the Church will be openfor you to set up your Christmas Trees.

Review by Elizabeth O’SheaBook ReviewFather John KenyonBy Tim BolandAn independent group of home owners
has decided to band together and unitein a concerted effort to protect allhomes against repossession.
The group, calling itself the Anti-Evic-tion Taskforce is growing in numbersat a tremendous pace. Starting with ahandful of people under threat of evic-tion, its numbers swelled to over 200people overnight, even before its web-site was complete.
“The continued apathy and procrasti-nation of the government in dealingwith the crisis has ignited our move-ment” said Patrick Grant, a member ofthe group, he cited “The tremendouswork being done by New Beginnings,The People’s Association Watchdog,Defend Our Homes League and IrishHomeowners Unite is being ignoredand given nothing more than a glanc-ing nod of recognition by the govern-ment, while Ireland is sinking deeperinto a quagmire of misery and socioe-conomic disaster.
The Anti-Eviction Taskforce will turnout in numbers to offer a physical pres-ence to homes under immediate threatand will have legal observers at each
attempted eviction to document, record, offer advice and act upon anyissues that are considered dubious orillegal.
The Anti-Eviction Taskforce is sure tobecome one of the most popular move-ments on the net in Ireland as thisweek we see over 100,000 familyhomes threatened.
The Anti Eviction Taskforce supportsthe initiatives and hard work of all oth-er groups involved with protectingfamily homes that are under threat, in-cluding The People’s AssociationWatchdog, Irish Homeowners Unite,DOHL and New Beginnings.

In any event, it is clear that this mix ofnegativity and emotional turmoil, some-times accompanied by poor family dy-namics cause relationships betweenfamily members to suffer, and to fosterfurther depression. Marriage relation-ships can deteriorate if severe depressionpersists over a long period. There is astrong association between depressionand marital distress. The non-depressedpartner is saddled with coping alone aswell as enduring the behaviour of thedistressed partner. The non-depressedpartner may see him or her as a burden, causing worry and failing to respond pos-itively to support. Part of this worry isabout the hopelessness that is inherent indepression, and hopelessness can be apointer to suicidal thoughts. Suicidalthinking is also a symptom of depressionrooted in a sense of futility, of beingworthless, and the thought that death ispreferable to living. This reality is anightmare for a family, and for the non-depressed partner.Of course, depression in the context of amarriage relationship can be a two wayprocess. Marital dysfunction can in itselfcause depression; for example the endingof close intimacy is highly stressful andmay bring on depression. Research hasshown that dissatisfied spouses are threetimes as likely to develop depression assatisfied ones. Some studies relating tomen and depression show that marriagetroubles is the single most common prob-lem associated with male depression. They show that men can’t cope with dis-agreements as well as women, and try toavoid arguments. The female partner ismost likely to wish to talk about the prob-lem and the male partner wishes to avoidtalking about it. She feels ignored and hefeels nagged, and withdraws further. The negative impact of depression onmarriage relationships may be increasedif the depressed partner has a long-termmedical condition. Such a condition maymake the depression worse as well asincreasing the health costs in any house-hold, a reality that can further increasetension in the marriage relationship. If thetension becomes too strong it can lead todivorce, and it seems that men are morevulnerable to depression than womenduring the divorce process. Sometimes itcan be devastating for them, and is likelyto cause severe depression, as well asantisocial behaviour, anger, alcohol use,and anxiety. This may be because theman loses not only a partner, but alsoloses contact with children, their familiarplace of living, and mutual friends, placeof worship, neighbours and communityassociations. This depression also leadsto suicidal intent and often suicide. De-pression may be further fostered if theman remarries. He may feel inadequate, angry, powerless in relation to step-chil-dren; and the difficulty of supporting asecond family may impose a severe bur-den on him. Depression, too, is a greater
risk for men who are already vulnerableto it. Every situation, of course, is unique, and I am acutely aware that marriagebreakdown is also very depressive forfemale partners. One of the saddest results of depressionis how it damages good parenting. Adepressed parent may lack energy, pa-tience and interest, and result in negativeparenting or even disengagement to someextent from the children. Research hasshown that there is a strong correlationbetween childrearing styles and the pres-ence or absence of depression in thechild’s later life as an adult. Parents, whoare controlling, and either lacking affec-tion, or, on the other hand, overprotec-tive, are sowing the seeds of depressionin their children. This depression is likelyto sprout in the face of stressful events inlater life. Most of the research has beendone on women, but recent studies havealso underlined the significance of pater-nal depression on parenting. ProfessorThomas J. McMahon of the Yale Univer-sity Medical School and a colleague A. ZSpector show that depressed fathers showmore negative parenting behaviours, andare less inclined to play with their chil-dren, read to them, hug them or help withthe daily routines. Depression in fatherstends to be associated with more hostilebehaviour towards the children, and ismore critical, bringing about a conflictualrelationship with the children. They alsocontribute to marital disharmony and thisbecomes a negative experience for chil-dren. There is a two way process here, too. McMahon and Spector state that de-pressed men may experience guilt andnegative feelings, just as mothers do,when they contemplate their failure tofunction properly as parents.

Buying local products at locally ownedbusinesses keeps money circulatingcloser to where you spend it.This creates a ripple effect as thosebusinesses and their employees in turnspend their money locally.Unfortunately, most corporate chainssend most of your money out of town.
If everyone in a community spends agreater percentage locally, the multipliereffect turns that into big bucks for thelocal economy. For example, increasinglocal spending from 50% to 80% morethan doubles the money - therefore€200 spent locally could have close to€500 in impact on the community!
