A new Coder Dojo club has started in St.Joseph’s secondary school in Borriso-leigh. The St. Joseph’s Coder Dojo isrun by volunteers within the school andpupils have the opportunity to learn howto code, develop websites, mobile appli-cations, programs, games, electronicsand more. “With the ever increasing de-mand for ICT graduates and the in-creased exposure to digital media andsystems, students are hungry for knowl-edge and information in the area. Weare delighted to be leading the way inthis field and preparing our students forthe rapidly changing working environ-ment” said Kevin McCarthy, Principal atSt. Joseph’s.

Jacqueline Humphries, IT Lecturer fromLIT Thurles was involved in starting theCoder Dojo movement in Tipperary in2012, and is assisting St. Joseph’s in es-tablishing the club. She stated that Cod-er Dojo clubs provide an opportunity foryoung people to experiment and learnfrom their peers and from experts in theindustry in a fun and interactive way. “Icame in contact with St. Joseph’s whilstjudging at the SciFest competition, and Iwas taken aback with the sheer numberof projects entered by the school. They

were given the accolade of the “BestSchool for Science” by SciFest, andhave also won at BT Young Scientistlast year. Their approach to teachingscience and technology in a fun and en-gaging way is exemplary, and so I feelthe Coder Dojo is the perfect fit, and thenext logical step for the school, and I’mdelighted to be in a position to help.”said Ms. Humphries.

Kevin McCarthy said he was thrilled toprovide the opportunity to their boys andgirls. A number of our students havebeen attending Coder Dojo for severalyears in other venues, and so to bringtheir knowledge and experience back tothe school is invaluable.

Teacher,Mr.Cathal O’Shea will co-ordi-nate this club on Wednesday evenings4.00pm to 5.00pm. Leading the group isour own John Ryan who has won nu-merous programming competitions in-cluding the Google Call to Code,Coolest Projects Award and reached thefinal six of the All-Ireland ProgrammingOlympiad team.

The Coder Dojo club is limited to stu-dents of St. Joseph’s and will run once aweek after school.

Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur(IBYE) competition is an integral part ofthe Action Plan for Jobs and is support-ed by the Department of Jobs, Enterpriseand Innovation through the 31 Local En-terprise Offices around the country.

At the IBYE Regional Final, three localbusiness owners and new start-ups fromTipperary, all under the age of 30, wenthead-to-head with other county winnersfrom Clare, Limerick and Kerry.

The nominees were all interviewed by athree member judging panel and had todeliver a business pitch, live. Assessed

on criteria such as business innovation,job creation potential and financial plan-ning, the announcement of the nationalfinalists was made at a reception in TheAbbey Court Hotel in Nenagh with spe-cial guest Minister Alan Kelly TD. Oth-er guests at the Regional Final includedCllr Seamus Hanafin, Cathaoirleach ofTipperary County Council Mr. Joe Mac-Grath, Chief Executive Tipperary Coun-ty Council and Ms Rita Guinan, Head ofEnterprise, Tipperary Local EnterpriseOffice.

Congratulating the finalists, the Ministerfor Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Ri-chard Bruton T.D. said: “Central to ourplans for jobs and growth is supportingmore businesses to start-up. You can see by this stage of howdestructive social anxiety is. It is sodisabling because sufferers feel helplessunder the onslaught of its symptoms,which are psychological and physical.The psychological symptoms of socialphobia are fear, anxiety and worry.These unpleasant feelings may come onmonths before the event, and you worryabout making a fool of yourself in public,making a mess of a speech, being seenby others as being nervous, beingjudged and ridiculed, and being self-conscious. It is as if you are the centre ofattraction for the wrong reasons. Youknow that this is ridiculous andirrational, but this does not ease theworry and the fear.

This intense fear, worry and anxiety willaffect your body and bring onunpleasant physical reactions. Yourmouth may feel parched, sweat breaksout on your forehead, your voicebecomes shaky, your hands feelclammy, your face twitches, and youmay feel faint. Some of the reactions aresimilar to those of panic attacks. Acommon reaction is palpitations, whichin themselves can cause a lot of stressand fear. Those who suffer from thiscomplaint may tremble and sweat, evenat the thought of going to a celebration.They immediately become tense, blush,and often feel dizzy. They mayexperience an overwhelming sense ofdespair and hopelessness; feel a knot intheir stomach, and a strong desire toescape from the social event.

One of the principal symptoms of socialphobia affects your breathing. As thestress and anxiety increases, you willbegin to breathe rapidly, and this in turntriggers other distressing physicalsymptoms such as dizziness, a chokingfeeling, increased pulse, and tension.These can be relieved by deepbreathing. Meditation and relaxationtechniques also provide some relief. Ona longer term examine your thoughtsand try to change them. Negativethoughts predicting disaster orembarrassment create a negativeoutlook and an irrational inner world,which nourishes the anxiety. Changingthese thoughts to more positive onesstarves the anxiety and destroys theinner irrational, unreal world that youhave created. For example you could

change the following negative thoughts,‘I know I’m going to make a right idiot(eejit!) of myself’, ‘I can’t do this’, ‘ thisis too much for me’, ‘I know I’m going toget a panic attack’, ‘people will think Iam a bore’, people will think I’m stupid’,‘I know I’m going to sweat, and what willpeople say’, ‘I know my mouth will dryup and I will speak with a squeak’, andso on. You might substitute thefollowing positive thoughts for thesenegative thoughts - ‘I know what I’mtalking about, I have researched what Iam going to say’, ‘I might sweat. Sowhat!’, ‘it is normal to be nervous whenspeaking in public’, ‘I will have a glass ofwater nearby if my mouth gets dry. It’snormal to have a dry mouth whenspeaking publicly’, ‘I won’t get a panicattack. I know how to breathe deeply toensure my breathing is ok’, ‘Peoplewon’t think that I’m boring. If some do,so what!’, ‘I am not that important thatpeople will focus on me’. Try to put in athought that is exactly the opposite ofthe negative thought. You could practisethis on a daily basis until it becomessecond nature to you.
