Dear God, All I ask for in 2011 is abig, fat bank account and a slim body. Please don’t mix these up like you didlast year. Amen.

Some days I wake up and ask myselfwhat I'm doing with my life. But mostdays my wife does it for me.A man was sitting alone in his officeone night when a genie popped up outof his ashtray and said, "And whatwill your third wish be?"The man looked at the genie and said,"Huh? How can I be getting a thirdwish when I haven't had a first or sec-ond wish yet?" "You have had twowishes already," the genie said, "butyour second wish was for me to puteverything back the way it was beforeyou made your first wish. Thus, youremember nothing, because every-thing is the way it was before you

made any wishes. You now have onewish left.""Okay," said theman, "I don't believethis, but what theheck. I wish I wereirresistible to wom-en.""Funny," said the ge-nie as it granted hiswish and disappearedforever. "That wasyour first wish, too!"

A man brought hismassive Dobermanpinscher to the vet tobe spayed. Beforetaking this dog'sleash, the vetglimpsed at thoselarge teeth of hersand asked the

owner,"Is she friendly?""Friendly?!" said the man. "She's hadfive litters!"

When I go to casinos, the most ridicu-lous sign I see is the one that says..."Ifyou have a gambling problem, call1-800- GAMBLER."So, I call them and say, "I have an aceand a six. The dealer has a seven. What do I do?"

Aunt Mary, a spinster of 92, had final-ly consented to go to a rest home, butstrictly on a two-week-trial basis.Consequently, she took a small over-night case with only the bare essen-tials.A couple of days later her niece wassurprised to get a phone call from herdemanding more clothes."Please bring me that good black silk,my lavender print, the brown wool..."and she went on and on. Finally aftera brief questioning from her niece,Aunt Mary expostulated:

"There are MEN in this place!"When a guy's printing on his printerbegan to grow faint, he called a localrepair shop where a friendly man in-formed him that the printer probablyneeded only to be cleaned.Because the store charged €50 forsuch cleanings, he told him he mightbe better off reading the printer's man-ual and trying the job himself.Pleasantly surprised byhis candor, he asked,"Does your boss knowthat you discouragebusiness?""Actually, it's my boss'sidea," the employee re-plied sheepishly. "Weusually make moremoney on repairs if welet people try to fixthings themselves first."

I went to the cinema theother day and in thefront row was an oldman and with him washis dog. It was a sadfunny kind of film, youknow the type. In thesad part, the dog criedhis eyes out, and in thefunny part, the dog

laughed its head off. This happenedall the way through the film. After thefilm had ended, I decided to go andspeak to the man."That's the most amazing thing I'veseen," I said. "That dog really seemedto enjoy the film."The man turned to me and said,"Yeah, it is. He hated the book."

Burglaries are not restricted to partic-ular times of the day or the any spe-cial season. Thieves are on theconstant lookout for easy targetsand when they do strike, cause a greatdeal of distress and insecurity. Asalways, prevention is better than cure,so it is worth walking around yourhome and checking on your own se-curity.

Windows are obvious entry points. Ifthey are old, it may be worth invest-ing in new windows with locks. Theycan also come with catches thatprevent them being opened more thana few inches. Another advantage ofnew windows is that they have great-er energy efficiency, which can savemoney in the long run. Door locksshould also be checked for efficiency. If they are the old lock, it would beworth replacing them with multiplelocking mechanisms. Obstacles arethe best form of defence against bur-glars. If you have patio doors, makesure they are well secured as these arefavourite entry points for thieves.

Security alarms are also a great idea, and are a great deterrent. Be sure an

get a licensed professional to installyour alarm system.

Outdoor sensor lighting is a good de-terrent and having good lighting out-side the front and back door willenable you to see who is outside.Spy holes and door chains are sensi-ble security devices. Lights on timerswitches inside the house will alsogive the illusion that someone ishome, before you actually get homeand will also act as a deterrent.

If you are unfortunate enough to beburgled, it would be difficult to proveany recovered belongings are actuallyyours, so it is advisable to mark yourbelongings if it is possible. Forsmaller items such as heirlooms orjewellery, take photos of them andkeep records about their unique mark-ings. Keep the records separate fromthe recorded items.

If you are still unsure, get in touchwith your local security firm, for ad-vice on your own home.

How Secure Is Your Home?

There are many good reasons to hirea marquee; the marquee turns anyparty into an occasion. When peoplesee a marquee and they hear the mu-sic they begin getting into the partymood, ready to meet friends and chatto old acquaintances. Due to the un-reliability of the Irish weather hiringa marquee is a must for any party be-ing organised at home. There’s noth-ing worse than organising a barbequeonly to have it ruined by a downpourof rain and everyone having to scram-ble inside and try locate a chair to sitin or a corner to stand in. Most hous-

es can’t cater for a large number ofpeople and you end up with groupsscattered all over the house, in theliving room, the kitchen, sitting onthe stairs etc. Hiring a marquee foran event gives you the flexibility inrelation to the number of guests andwith everyone in the one ‘room’ youare guaranteed a better nights enjoy-ment . The marquee offers the flexi-bility to be all things for all parties.Parties at home always have a morerelaxed feel. They are ideal for Birth-day parties, communions, anniversa-ries, wedding parties etc.

SYMPATHY

While the GAA Scene was on itswinter break, two of Tipperary’s mostfamous hurlers passed to their eternalreward – John Doyle of HolycrossBallycahill and Jimmy Butler Coffeyof Newport. John Doyle’s many out-standing achievements, chief amongwhich were 8 All Ireland senior hurl-ing medals and 11 national hurlingleague medals, are unlikely to be eversurpassed and his contribution to Tip-perary as a player, selector and admin-istrator is legendary. The largeturnout at his funeral and the manydeserved tributes paid to him weretestimony to his greatness. Ni bheidha leitheid ann aris. Jimmy Butler Cof-fey who was 101 years old was thelast surviving member of Tipperary’s1937 All Ireland winning senior hurl-ing team. A well known raconteur,Jimmy also won an All Ireland minorhurling title. We extend our sympathyto the Doyle and Coffey families. Tip-perary County Board also extends itssympathy to the McAreavey and Hartefamilies on the tragic death of Mi-chelle McAreavey (nee Harte) inMauritius. Ar dheis De go raibh a ana-macha go léir.

HERE WE GO AGAIN

The Tipperary Senior Hurling teambegan their 2011 campaign with a onepoint loss at the hands of the Water-ford Institute of Technology on Sun-day at Clonmel on a scoreline of 2-17to 1-19. Tipperary had 6 players mak-ing their competitive debut at SeniorHurling level with John Coghlan(Moyne-Templetuohy), Sean Carey(Moyle Rovers), Michael Gleeson(Thurles Sarsfields) and John O’Neill(Clonoulty-Rossmore) making theirfirst starts while substitutes JohnO’Dwyer (Killenaule) and TimmyDalton (Arravale Rovers) were alsomaking their debuts. Eddie Connolly(Loughmore-Castleiney) and StephenLillis (Thurles Sarsfields) were report-ed in some quarters as making theirdebuts also but in fact lined out forTipperary in the Waterford CrystalShield competition in February 2006against Waterford played at Colligan.Others to make their debut on that oc-casion were current panellists Paddy

Stapleton, David Young and JamesWoodlock. In last year’s WaterfordCrystal Cup, Tipperary lost out in thefirst round to Clare by 0-17 to 1-12with none of the 18 players used mak-ing their debut. In fact, 12 of the 18players used on that chilly night inBorrisoleigh would play in the 2010All-Ireland Final victory over Kilken-ny last September. How many of theTipperary (or WIT) players from lastSunday will play Championship hurl-ing in Croke Park this summer? Timewill tell. The Waterford IT team fea-tured 5 Tipperary players including 2senior panellists – Brian O’Meara(Kilruane MacDonaghs) and TimmyHammersley (Clonoulty Rossmore). The other 3 were Ray McLoughney(Kilruane MacDonaghs), MichaelSheedy (Portroe) and Willie O’Dwyer(Carrick Davins). Hammersley wasthe game’s top scorer, with 1-10 (0-7frees). Other Tipperary players on theWIT panel were Kieran Hammersley(Clonoulty Rossmore), Kieran Reid(Carrick Swans), Matthew O’Donnell(Killeanaule) and Aidan McGrath(Loughmore Castleiney). Tipperary’snext competitive game will be the Al-lianz GAA Hurling League openinggame against Kilkenny at Semple Sta-dium on Saturday evening, February12.

MCGRATH CUP SENIOR FOOT-BALL

Waterford defeated Tipperary in theMcGrath Cup quarter final by 0-11 to0-9 at Walsh Park, Waterford on Sun-day last. Tipperary’s next competitiveouting will be their first round Divi-sion 3 Allianz GAA Football Leaguegame against Limerick at Semple Sta-dium on Sunday, February 6th.

Your feet may be among the mostunappreciated and hardest workingparts of your body. They will carryyou hundreds and thousands of milesduring your lifetime, for all that yourfeet do for you, don’t you think theydeserve proper care and a little bit ofpampering? Here are a few tips tomake sure that your feet feel good anddo what they are supposed to:Treating your feet properly starts withwearing proper footwear. When pur-chasing a pair of shoes, have the sales-person size your feet when you arestanding, not sitting. Choose shoeswith a roomy toe box and moderateheel, and if you must wear heels forwork, keep a pair of comfortable shoesthat you can slip into for walking andcommuting. Not only shoes, but socksalso play an important role in prevent-ing some common foot problems.Make sure to choose socks that fityour feet right, loose socks can wrin-kle inside your shoes and cause blis-ters and discomfort. Choose socksthat have cotton or wool blend that letsyour feet breathe, helps keep themcool, and prevents any bacteria. Most women lavish attention on theirfaces, moisturisers, daily scrubs, and

exfoliation creams, but few women domuch for their feet other than run acloth over them in the shower. Washyour feet with warm water every day, keep skin soft and smooth with a thinlayer of foot lotion, petroleum jelly orskin lotion applied to the tops andbottoms of your feet. Do not put lo-tion between your toes as this maycause infection. Smooth rough heels, calluses or other rough spots with apumice stone. Cut your toenails atleast once a week, cut toenails straightacross to avoid ingrown toenails. If your body produces excess perspira-tion, you can end up with moist feetinside dark shoes-the perfect breedingground for bacteria-which can lead tosmelly feet. If you have a problemwith smelly feet, wash your feet dailypaying particular attention to the areasbetween your toes, where did skincells can collect and contribute to theproblem. Use foot powder in yoursocks, and ensure that you wear cottonsocks.Remember that your feet are very im-portant, without them you wouldn’t beable to get from point A to point B, soit is very important that you look afterthem.

Following the rollout of GAA e-mailusing Google to all units in the lastyear, the GAA has over the last 8months been communicating withclubs concerning the deployment of anew club website technology. It was initiallycommunicated to clubs that the ser-vice on the old infrastructure wouldcease operation on the 20th of De-cember 2010. However due to thesheer volume of late requests for sites

What is it about us these days?Women seem to be under such pres-sure in the world we live in, thatthey are always on the edge. Whynot get to grips with this issue in themost hilarious way possible, withfour women on the point of crack-ing up at The Source on Saturday22nd.

Bombshells is a show about thestresses we make for ourselves, starting with the fame seeking teen-ager, moving on to the terrifiedbride. Then there’s the freneticmother, who just can’t seem to fiteverything into 24 hours. To roundit all off there’s the simmering wid-ow. I’m sure everyone can recogn-ise at least one of their friends andfamily, hopefully not themselves, inthat lot of stereotypes. The showpromises to leave you reeling withlaughter as these women talk youthrough their lives and the stresses

they have to cope with. If onlysomeone would tell them they don’tneed to be so uptight about things, their lives would be a lot simpler, but not so funny.

This comedy show started life witha successful run at Galway’s Bankof Ireland Theatre. It was one of thehighlights on the Theatre Stage atElectric Picnic in 2009 and lastsummer it was on at Fota House. Itis just back in Ireland following aUS tour. So don’t miss your chanceto see this hit show.

Bombshells is at The Source ArtsCentre on Saturday 22nd January at8pm. Tickets €18 / €16 concession

Figures released by SIMI show that17,272 reclaims were made under thegovernment Scrappage Scheme in2010. (Some Scrappage Scheme carssold in December 2010 will not be pro-cessed until January/February 2011 sothese are interim results pending theprocessing of the final DecemberScrappage refunds). These statistics arebased on data compiled by Revenue.

Speaking about the scheme, Alan No-lan, Director General of SIMI says,

“With close to 17,500 scrappage carssold last year, the Government Schemeprovided the Industry with a real boostwhich saw overall business increase byover 50%. Ending the year with carsales up 55% on 2009, there is no doubtthat this was directly due to the stimu-lus provided by the Scrappage Scheme. With the continuation of the scheme forthe first six months of this year, we pre-dict that a further 10,000 cars are likelyto be sold under the Scheme.”

American Theatre Company bringsfast-paced ‘Romeo and Juliet’ toNenagh Arts Centre

The Forestburgh Theatre Arts Cen-tre from New York State presentRomeo and Juliet at Nenagh ArtsCentre in late January. The populartragedy by William Shakespeareabout two “star-cross’d lovers” haslong been a fascination for theatre-goers and students of english. Inan attempt to connect with ayounger modern audience, thisproduction has been redesigned, turning text into rock songs in or-

der to drive the story while retain-ing the original Shakespeareandialogue. The abridged modern-ization is fast-paced and full of en-ergy, using six professional actors

playing multiple roles. This strongensemble of performers throw cau-tion to the wind and make bravenew choices in order to tell thiscomplex story of feuding familiesliving in a dangerous world ofhasty action with treacherous re-sults.

Romeo and Juliet takes place onTuesday 25th January at 2.0 p.m.Tickets are €12 but school andgroup bookings will receive a con-cession.Contact the Nenagh Arts Centre on067 34900 for details.

Some of the techniques in the counsel-ling of a male abuser consist of educa-tion. This may include an exploration ofmasculinity and how social norms aboutgender affect the way men behave inintimate relationships. In Ireland todaythose norms are rapidly changing as theequality of women is being recognised.Another technique is to discuss with theclient the difference between healthyand unhealthy relationships, and non-violent ways to resolve conflict. Thismight involve techniques for angermanagement to avoid violence. Father-hood skills might also be looked at inwhich the importance of parenting in anon violent way is explored. Childabuse is a serious matter, and this shouldbe explained to the client. If alcohol anddrugs enter the picture, then an explora-tion on their effects on one’s moods andcapacity for violence should be lookedat. It would also be beneficial to look athow faith and spirituality can affect aperson’s behaviour. Of course, this mustfit into the cultural and belief culture ofthe abusive client. There are otherthemes that could be looked at, such asself-esteem, advice on money, informa-tion about job-skills training and so on.But now to the core of the matter. Indi-vidual counselling must explore theabusive client’s issues deeply, and thisapplies in particular to his childhood. DrEckhardt, a professor at Purude Univer-sity, has published a book on how tocounsel abusers using cognitive therapy.I do not believe that cognitive therapy isthe best way to heal an abusive nature. Ibelieve that exploring the inner pain andfeeling that pain is the only way. It is,however, a hard way, and not many areable to follow it.The abusive client must be ready andwilling to explore this awful pain, andmust be willing to be vulnerable in re-vealing shameful aspects of his life fromchildhood onwards. How difficult itmust be for a person who strives forcontrol to be vulnerable and honest inthe presence of a stranger! How difficultto explore shameful aspects of his lifewith a stranger! This is where the rela-tionship between the counsellor and theclient comes into the picture. If the cli-ent has come to trust the counsellor, thenthere is a chance that he will embracethe opportunity to rid himself of theburden of his internal pain, and stop theabusive behaviour which blights thelives of so many.Sometimes this may call for extremeaction. It may involve being vulnerableto the victim whom the abuser has con-trolled, perhaps for years. How difficultthat may be for the abuser, and it ex-plains the low level of healing fromabusive tendencies. But I believe that it

is the most effective way to heal thesetendencies and to enable the abuser tocurb them in the future. This may meantalking to the victim, listening to them, allowing them to narrate their experi-ence of abuse, apologising to them, andbeing open to their righteous anger. Itmay even mean asking the victims towrite down the various abusive inci-dents, so that the abuser has the opportu-nity to acknowledge them and toapologise sincerely for perpetratingsuch hurt on them.Naomei Will holds a similar view tothis. She argues that to effect healing inthe abuser and the abused, the abusershould acknowledge their abuse, honest-ly confront their conscience and recallas many abusive incidents as possible, confess that they are abusers and takeresponsibility for it, validate the emo-tions of the victims, and apologise forthe hurt. Following that, restoration, for-giveness and healing will gradually hap-pen.But, this is extremely difficult for mostabusers, and can only be tried followinga long time exploring those issues thathave formed them. Counselling is apowerful agent of change to a person’spersonality, and it is only when his innerhurt has been healed that the abuser maybe ready to leap this final hurdle. Untilthat inner hurt is healed no other attemptat therapy to ‘cure’ abuse will succeed.
