This Sunday 7th July a WorldRecord attempt is being attemptedin Lough Derg by Scuba DiverChristopher Healy. Christopher haspreviously set a new World Recordtravelling a distance of 10km un-derwater to raise money for theShare a Dream Foundation.Nenagh based Lough Derg SubAqua Club, along with other diveclubs and divers, will be providingboat cover and cover divers to as-sist Christy in his attempt to travela distance of 20km underwater inLough Derg. He also plans to set anew record for the fastest 10kmunderwater while he’s at it. As youdo!

The dive will commence at 4amfrom Two Mile Gate travelling upthe Shannon for a distance beforeturning around and Christy hopesto surface at Killaloe at 4pm hav-ing travelled the 20km. The under-water hero will surface as anotherIrish hero is being celebrated atThe Féile Brian Ború, which runsin Killaloe/Ballina from the 4th to7th July. You can follow his adven-tures and incredible training regimeand get in touch to make donationsor offer assistance on his Facebookpage ‘Christopher Healy - Divingfor Charity’.

The craziest thing about the wholeunderwater adventure is that it is aprecursor to the main event whichChristy is planning for the end ofAugust. He plans to attempt anoth-er new World Record by scuba div-ing from Scotland to NorthernIreland!

What got him started on this wholething you might ask? In early 2010Christopher Healy and his wifeTrish were told that their onlychild, Stephen (18) had Non-Hodg-kin’s Lymphoma (cancer of thelymphoid tissue). The family facedthe illness head on. A cousin ofChristy’s who visited the hospitalregularly was Jonathan Manganwho was also an active volunteerwith The Share a Dream Founda-tion who do incredible work forsick children all over Ireland. To‘give something back’/ ‘pay it for-ward’ for all the help and supportreceived by the Healy family,Christy decided, as you do, to set anew World Record scuba diving 10kilometers underwater to raisefunds for Share a Dream. And whatabout Christy’s son Stephen? WellI am happy to say that after sixmonths of Chemotherapy and akidney operation Stephen was giv-en the all clear.

Lorrha to feature inRTE Documentary

The Ormond Way Association inconjunction with Lorrha and DorrhaHistorical Society were delighted towelcome Peter Mulryan and his filmcrew to Lorrha in March of this year. The crew were on their fourth day offilming an RTE documentary recreat-ing the historic march of O’SullivanBeare which took place in the winterof 1603. The epic march from Bearain Co. Cork to Co. Leitrim tookO’Sullivan and his followers 14 days, and of the 1000 men, women andchildren who marched with him, only35 arrived in Leitrim. Some of themost dramatic parts of O’Sullivan’sjourney took place in the parish ofLorrha. They were attacked by theMacegan clan from Redwood Castleand at Ballymacegan they made theirdangerous voyage across the riverShannon.

The day began at Redwood Castlewhere the crew were made very wel-come as they filmed from the top ofthe castle. Local man David Broder-

ick gave an account of O’Sullivan’sjourney through the parish. The sec-ond part of filming took place atWhite’s Ford in Ballymacegan. Itwas here that O’Sullivan Beare andhis men crossed the Shannon in acurrach made by killing and skinningtheir own horses. Currach buildersPádraig Ó’Duinnín and Dave Nolanwere on site to try and recreate thisimportant part of the journey. Pádraigmay be a familiar face to some fromhis TG4 series Muintir na Mara.Over two days they built the frame-work of a currach out of hazel anddemonstrated with cow hides howO’Sullivan may have made a suitablevessel to travel across the river.

The documentary is due to bescreened on RTE 1 on Sunday 7thJuly at 6.30pm and will be presentedby broadcaster Evelyn O’Rourke.Look out for updates onwww.facebook.com/lorrhadorrhahistoricalsociety.

The newly formed Borrisoleigh Dra-ma Group took to the stage for theirpremiere performance on Thursday13th of June. They presented a playin one act by Lady Gregory set in theearly 1900’s. From the moment thecurtain was raised the audience weretransported back to a fair day in arural Irish village. The set design wasoutstanding with every last detailthought through; the stalls and thewares displayed created an authenticbackdrop to the story as did the cos-tumes and the props. The productionteam had the inspired idea of openingthe play with a group of childrenplaying. This allowed the audience totake in the set and get a feel for theatmosphere of the play. The story while set in a different erais one we all can relate to, whodoesn’t enjoy a good ‘gossip’ espe-cially about the neighbours, and bet-ter again if there is a crime involved! The local policeman (Paddy Dolan)is escorting the new magistrate(Michael Kinane) around the village. They encounter a stall owner (ÚnaShanahan) whose hearing impair-ment and desire for a good gossipleads to a series of events only the

hand of the law can solve! The mostmisfortunate man in the village, Bar-tley Fallon (Ollie Delaney), findshimself through no fault of his ownat the centre of the crime. The townsfolk (Derry O’Donnell, Joe Holland,Kellie Kelly, Antoinette McMahon,Bríd Ní Chléirigh-Devitt and MarieMurray) fan the flames of gossipspreading their stories far and wide.Until Mrs. Fallon (ChristineO’Dwyer) must defend her husband;and what about the fate of JackSmith (Paul Boyle)? The audiencewere enthralled as everyone tried tofigure how it would all end.It is hard to believe that this was thefirst time most of these actors wereon stage. Their energy and ability tocapture the essence of the charactersthey were playing was phenomenal.A great tribute must be paid to theproduction team of Mary Boyle-Bourke, Caroline Kennedy and Patri-cia Ryan. The fact that the group per-formed to a full house on two nightsin the Marian Hall is testament totheir success. We look forward withanticipation to the next performancefrom the Borrisoleigh Drama Group.

Radical Local Food Systems is aone-day exploration on July 20thfrom 11am-5pm as part of theCloughjordan Ecovillage EcoLearnExperience Day 2013 Programme.

This event will explore the possibili-ties and issues involved in localisingmost of the food systems for individ-uals and communities. The Clough-jordan Ecovillage and broadercommunity provide the practical con-text for exploring diverse methodsand scales of production, appropriatediets, alternate market strategies suchas Community Supported Agricul-ture systems, and the issues relatingto the production of vegetable, meat, milk, dairy and grains. Planning for afull diet, working with available re-sources and issues of resilience willbe key themes throughout the presen-tations, discussions and practicalcomponents of this exploration.

Cloughjordan EcoLearn Experience Day:Radical Local Food Systems

If you are lucky enough to have agreenhouse the first thing you willhave noticed is that space is very limit-ed and it can be hard to know just howto get the most from it and how topack as much vegetables and fruit inthere.

There are a few ways you can alteryour mini greenhouse to get moreplants in. The first thing you can do isto install shelving along one side. Thiswill allow you to stack smaller grow-ing vegetables such as lettuce, saladsand herbs on top of each other and youcan save the opposite side of the greenhouse for taller growing plants liketomatoes and cucumber or sweetcorn.Be aware that the shelving is going tocast a big shadow all year round so itwould be best to position it on thenorth side of your greenhouse andgrow your tomatoes on the south sidewhere they will receive more sunlight.

Some greenhouse plants benefit fromshade:

AuberginesOreganoAsparagusLettucePlants that are happy in full sun:

TomatoesSquashesMelonsStrawberriesHowever in the height of summer allplants in the greenhouse will benefitfrom some amount of shading in themiddle of the day. This can be doneusing a garden fleece or frost fleecedraped over the glass or around indi-vidual plants.

Taller plants will provide shade forother plants. Tall Peas, Bean and to-matoes can be used to shade lettuce, salads and herbs

The next thing to consider when opti-mising space in your greenhouse is toknow what plants will grow just aswell outside. With that in mind we cansay that all brassicas can be sown out-side, however it is best practise to startyour seedlings in the greenhouse andtransplant out once the soil and airtemperature is warm and the plants arelarge enough that they can outcompeteweeds.

This method is true for the onion fami-ly and root crop family too. Thereforethe vegetables that should be grown inyour greenhouse include the follow-ing:

TomatoesCourgettesCucumbersSweetcornFrench BeansStrawberriesMelonsSquashesQuick crop saladsPeppers and chilliesAnd for starting all outdoor grownseedlingsAnd for over-wintering lettuce, springonions and peasAnother way to maximise your green-house is to continue to rotate the cropsover the year. The greenhouse can beused all year round and this is the bestway to optimise the space you have. Ifthe weather outside is warm then youshould make full use of your vegetablebeds and save the greenhouse for themore tender crops mentioned above.

If your space is limited then avoidgrowing courgettes as they spread toabout a meter in diameter and avoidsowing sweet corn which needs to besown in groups and will dominate asmall greenhouse.

Where possible you could hang trail-ing tomatoes plants such as the cherryTomato ‘Tumbler’ from the ceiling ofyour greenhouse, grown in hangingbaskets.

What Vegetables Should youGrow in a Mini Greenhouse

Vinegar is a magic wonder when itcomes to gardening. It not only killsweeds but they help flowers grow aswell. Douse white vinegar all

around your garden to prevent weedsfrom popping up and to help yourflowers to grow healthy and strong.

World Record attempt - LargestFootball Mosaic

On Saturday 6th July in Moyle Rov-ers GAA Club Tipperary LadiesGaelic Football will attempt to breaka world record by creating the Larg-est Football Mosaic. This involvesplacing balls beside each other to cre-ate a picture. Members of the publicare asked to become involved in theevent by coming along and placing aball in the football mosaic.

Currently the record for the largestfootball mosaic is measured 9.75 m(32 ft) in length and 5.94 m (19.5 ft)in width giving a total area of 57.92m² (624 ft²) and was achieved byBMO Bank of Montreal (Canada) atYonge-Dundas Square, Toronto,Canada, on 5 July 2012.

Tipperary hopes to break this record ayear and a day later by creating a Mo-saic of 65 m², using at a minimum1,395 balls and there will be extraballs there if required. The Mosaic

will create a picture of the words“The Horse & Jockey” who are thesponsors of the event and the Tipper-ary Intermediate Team.

While the Mosaic is being built therewill be a blitz on the pitches for Un-der 10 and Under 14 girls. The Un-der 10 Blitz will be a maximum of 11players a side with unlimited substi-tutions and the Under 14 Blitz will be7 a side with unlimited substitutions,Clubs may enter more than one teamif they wish. There is no entry fee foreither blitz but clubs must bring withthem someone who will refereegames on the day. Clubs are asked tonote that both the Under 10 Blitz andUnder 14 Blitz will be non-competi-tive with the emphasis on player skilldevelopment. Tipperary LadiesGaelic Football Clubs have receivedinvitations during the week and agreat number of clubs are expectedon the day. The day promises foot-ball and fun at its best.

From the beginning of time, peoplehave wanted to mark the burial plac-es of their loved ones. From themagnificence of the Pyramids andNewgrange, through the simplebeauty of Poulnabrone, right downto modern times all memorials havebeen made of stone. There was sim-ply no other natural material that wasas durable or permanent as stone, and because it could be cut and en-graved, it was possible to record aburial as a signpost to future genera-tions.

However, stone being a natural ma-terial, is prone to erosion by the ele-ments, even the strongest castles, which were designed to withstandcannon and gunpowder, eventuallysuccumbed to rain. Stone is porous, rain will eventually penetrate andweaken it, algae will penetrate intothe softened stone and grow there. This happens to Headstones as well, that is why there are so many shabbyand discoloured memorials in ourcemeteries. Its an expensive job, having these sandblasted and relet-tered to restore them to their formerglory.

Well now there is a material that willdo everything stone does, and more, without any of the drawbacks.Traditional materials are graduallybeing replaced by newer man madematerials because they are cheaper toproduce, more durable, are light butstrong, and require less maintenance.Just as uPVC was found to be an ex-cellent alternative to wood in win-dows, Fibreglass Composite is theideal alternative to stone Headstones..A Composite is a product compris-ing two separate materials, usually aFibreglass Matting and an Epoxy, which when combined, results in amaterial with a very high strength toweight ratio. In other words, it is

very light but extremely strong. Overthe past 40 years, fibreglass has re-placed wood in the building of boats, big and small. Sitting in water allyear round, exposed to all kinds ofweather and still as good as whenbought new. Fibreglass Headstoneshave many advantages over stone:

-They are Low Maintenance, can becleaned with warm soapy water, noexpensive sandblasting required eve-ry few years.-Stone is porous, Composites arenot, therefore Mildew and Algae willnot penetrate and discolour.-Durable and permanent.-Strong but light, can be installedalmost immediately.-Superb appearance with your choiceof graphic & inscription-Will not erode or fade.-Range of colours and effects .-Can be personalised with pictures.-Room for future inscription.-Easy to repair if vandalised or acci-dently damaged.-Less expensive than traditionalgranite or marble headstones.-Self install option, no special toolsor skills required

As these Headstones are hollow, they are ideal for use in Cremations. The Ashes can be kept in an urn andthe whole lot placed inside the hol-low cavity. Such a Headstone / Cre-mation Urn can be placed anywhere, not necessarily in a graveyard, as areminder of the deceased. These fi-breglass headstones were designedwith the intention of keeping funeralcosts down, they look the same anddo the same job in a more economi-cal way, without any of the disad-vantages of traditional stoneheadstones. This is the future, thestone age is over.Ring 0879782890 or log on towww.Fibreglassheadstones.com formore information.

Anxiety (continued from previous issue)

Martha Davis and her colleagues givea simple outline of the three differenttypes of exercise that we should com-bine to obtain optimum results to ourmental and physical health, and thus todecreasing our anxiety. They areaerobic/cardiovascular,stretching/flexibility, andtoning/strengthening exercises. Com-bining these is the best way to achievethe best results. Aerobic means ‘with oxygen’, andrefers to the use of oxygen to generateenergy. There are many popular andpleasant aerobic exercises that includewalking, running, jogging, cycling, swimming and dancing. Therefore, Ican say that I regularly use three ofthese. Alas, I am now too old to jog orrun! These exercises are good for ourheart (cardiovascular) and give usmore stamina, and help us maintain theproper weight.Stretching and toning exercises help tomaintain our muscle power, are goodfor our joints and keep us flexible. Thewebsite Health-and Home-Fitness.comgives some examples of stretchingexercises and includes the negativesand positives of these exercises. Theslow stretching exercises are veryrelaxing. They decrease muscle tensionand help with circulation. Toningexercises strengthen the muscles.Older people like me must be carefulthat we do not overdo it and injure ourbacks. The regularity of the exercise is theessential ingredient in reducing anxietyand stress. It is easy to find excuses forskipping our period of exercise. Wecan say we are too tired, our time is toolimited, it takes too long (togging out, doing the exercise and thenshowering), I’m too old, I’m tooheavy, and so on. Let me put it this way– what is more important, stayinghealthy, feeling good, losing weight, decreasing anxiety, i.e. SELF-CARE,or cramming in as much work aspossible, or lying about for longperiods? The effectiveness of exercise in reduc-ing anxiety is greatly increased if com-bined with a good diet. Healthy eatingon its own reduces anxiety and stress.A good diet, plenty of exercise, and notbeing overweight give us a feeling ofwell-being. Martha Davis says thathealthy eating is a learned skill and notsomething that comes naturally. I thinkthis is probably true. I remember as achild disliking vegetables, and I canrecall one of my aunts vainly trying toget me to eat a mixture of mashedcarrots and parsnips. Even today, I amnot fond of vegetables or salads, but Irealise how beneficial they are, and Ialways have my portions. I must con-fess, however, that I often eat the veg-etable first so that i can ‘enjoy’ theremainder of my dinner. Most morn-

ings of the week I make a goodsmoothie for my breakfast. I use a mix-ture of vegetables and fruit to add somesweetness. I include celery, spinach, alittle broccoli, a spoon of flax oil, anorange, some apple, a banana and anyother fruit that is around.

Series 4, no. 9. Anxiety. The impor-tance of nutrition. How caffeine in-creases anxiety. We are all familiar with the food pyra-mid, which shows the percentages ofthe different types of food that weshould combine - a lot of vegetablesand less red meat. You might be inter-ested in the website ‘images for imagesof the food pyramid’, which give awhole variety of food pyramids in col-our.If we are anxious about our health theknowledge that a good diet will im-prove it and prevent some complaintswill in itself relieve anxiety. We knowthat a diet high in fruits and vegetablesand whole grains may reduce risk forstroke and other heart diseases, andoffers some protection against certaincancers such as mouth, stomach andcolon cancers. Nutrients are essentialto our good health. We are told that weneed 40 nutrients for good health.Vegetables and whole grains are rich inpotassium, fibre, vitamin C, folic acid, magnesium, and so on. Overall, weshould vary our diet every day. We areencouraged by nutritionists to havedifferent types of fruit and vegetable, plenty of whole grain, have calciumrich foods such as low fat milk, yo-ghurt, cottage cheese. Try to avoidsaturated fats and opt for poly or mo-nounsaturated fats and oils. Have fisha few times a week and go easy on redmeat. If you wish to get more informa-tion on food in the context of reducingstress, consult the workbook (chapter19) compiled by Martha Davis and hercolleagues.
