DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Recently, my daughter attended a sweet-16 birthday party for one of her best friends. She is a beautiful girl. When my daughter showed me pictures of her friend, I was shocked. Her face and arms were deeply tanned. I have no idea how many hours she must have spent under a tanning machine. I am very concerned about her. Would you write about the dangers of tanning? — Anon.

ANSWER: Ultraviolet light, the kind of light we don’t see, has powerful effects on the skin. Ultraviolet A rays constitute 95 percent of the UV light that makes its way to earth. UV A rays do not burn and tan skin as much as UV B rays, but they do damage skin. They cause skin wrinkling; they dry skin; and they produce age spots (liver spots). And they also add to the risk of skin cancer.

Ultraviolet B rays are more destructive. They are the burning rays, and they have a greater effect on skin cancer production. Both A and B reduce the skin’s innate im-munity.

Exposure to both UV A and UV B injures the skin cells’ DNA, and that’s what sets the scene for future skin cancer. Humans have learned to cope with UV light by tanning. A tan offers some protection against further damage. UV light activates melanocytes, and they pass their melanin — a dark pigment — to other skin cells. That has the ef-fect of providing an umbrella for the skin. However beneficial that might be, the fact remains that in obtaining a modicum of protection with a tan, skin-cell DNA has been dealt a major blow.

No tan can be considered healthy. Sun exposure in adolescence might be the most dangerous time for ultraviolet damage. Tanning booths and tanning beds are considered a threat equal to the sun for promoting future skin cancer.

People of all ages should protect their skin from exposure to UV light. Such exposure happens every time a person goes outdoors. Cloud cover is a poor absorber of UV rays and offers little skin protection. Sunscreen application should become a habit.

• • •DEAR DR. DONOHUE: What’s considered ideal pool-water temperature? In our

apartment complex, we have a large pool that is so cold I rarely use it. I am getting a thermometer to measure its temperature. I would like to have a reference temperature to present to management if the water is colder than it should be. — N.U.

ANSWER: Pool water is comfortable for most when its temperature is between 82 and 86 degrees F (28-30 C). The water is cool enough to keep strong swimmers from

overheating, but warm enough to keep floaters from freezing.

• • •Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters,

but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an order form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

DOVER, Del. — For 2003 (then Winston) Cup champion Matt Kenseth, things could be better, but things also could be worse.

Kenseth drives a Ford, and Ford is the only manufacturer without a victory in the Sprint Cup season’s first 12 races. Befitting a former champion, Kenseth is holding up well through what otherwise might be termed a slump. In fact, Kenseth was and is third:

third in the Autism Speaks 400 at Dover International Speedway, and third in the overall point standings.

“There have been races this year where we performed well enough to win,” said Kenseth. “We finished second in Atlanta, and we were second or third on that last restart at Martinsville (18th-place finish after tan-gling with Jeff Gordon). In Vegas, I think Jeff (Gordon) and Jimmie (Johnson) had better cars, but we ran second or third there (fifth-place fin-ish) all day.”

The Wisconsin native just turned 38. In 376 Cup starts, Kenseth has won 18 races, and his next top-five finish will be his 100th. In NASCAR’s all-time

Kenseth a Real Team Playerlist of winners, Kenseth is in a five-way tie for 37th place with Geoff Bodine, the late Neil Bonnett, Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Harry Gant.

The careers of Kenseth and Earnhardt Jr. have been intertwined. Earnhardt outdueled Kenseth for two (then) Busch Series championships but has never won

a Cup championship. Both have won the Daytona 500. They were both rookies in 2000, with Kens-eth winning Raybestos Rookie of the Year.

Both also have had a hard time winning lately. Forty-six races have passed since Kenseth opened the 2009 season with consecutive victories.

“To me, it’s important to win, but more than that, if this makes sense, it’s important to put your-self in position to win and be up leading laps,” said Kenseth. “If you look at Jeff Gordon’s year, he hasn’t won yet, but he has led, like, 800 laps (actually 709), and has been in position every week. It is just a matter of time until he wins.

“You always want to win every week, but more so for me, it’s important to have the performance of the car and the team, everybody involved, to be a contender to win. If we are up there leading laps and in contention, eventually we’ll win. It’s important for me to get our performance up to a championship level.”

• On June 9, 1772, the British vessel Gaspee runs aground off the coast of Rhode Island while pursuing the Hanna, an American smuggling ship. That evening, John Brown, an American merchant angered by high British taxes on his goods, rowed out to the Gaspee with a number of other colonists and set the ship afire. When British officials attempted to prosecute the colonists involved in the “Gaspee Affair,” they found no Americans willing to testify against their countrymen.

• On June 13, 1905, pitcher Christy Matthewson of the New York Giants throws the second no-hitter of his career to lead his Giants to a 1-0 win over the powerful Chicago Cubs. That year Matthewson won 31 games to just nine lost.

• On June 12, 1920, Man O’ War wins the 52nd Belmont Stakes. His only career loss came in 1919 when his back was to the starting line at the beginning of one race. At that time, before the advent of starting gates, a rope was all that held horses back from starting their run.

• On June 10, 1935, in New York City, two recovering alcoholics found Alcoholics Anonymous (A.A.), a 12-step rehabilitation program that eventually helps countless people cope with alcoholism.

• On June 11, 1949, Hank Williams, Sr., makes his Grand Ole Opry debut at the Ryman Auditorium. The audience called Williams out for six encores and had to be implored not to call him out for more in order to allow the rest of the show to go on.

Q: I just saw “Iron Man 2” this weekend, and I wondered about one of the actresses in the movie. In the party scene with Robert Downey Jr., there is a blond actress who looks a lot like Irina from “Desperate Housewives.” Are they one in the same? — Tess G., via e-mail

A: That’s a very good eye you have there, as the actress who played Rebecca in “Iron Man 2” is indeed the same person who plays Irina: Helena Mattsson. The 26-year-old beauty from Stockholm, Sweden, is indeed wreaking havoc on poor Lynette portraying her son’s gold-digging fiancée.

When I caught up with Helena recently, she told me what a joy it is to play the Russian temptress: “It is so much fun to be the villain and to be manipulative. There are so many off-tones, so many layers that only the women understand among themselves. You can always read between the lines. It is also a lot of fun to play a character who’s really far from who you are yourself, and really have fun with that and be the villain.”

• • •Q: Will Starz’s new show “Spartacus: Blood and Sand” be back for a second season? Also, I had heard that the show’s

star, Andy Whitfield, has cancer. Is he going to be OK? — Paul F., Mansfield, OhioA: It was recently announced that “Spartacus” will return in January 2011 as a six-part prequel series that will once

again star John Hannah and Lucy Lawless, with brief appearances by Andy Whitfield. The series has been renewed for a full second-season order, but production has been delayed while Andy is treated for non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Co-star Katrina Law told me that Andy is responding well to treatment, and that “he has felt the millions of prayers that are coming toward him, and it really is an inspiration for him. Keep sending them, because he really appreciates it.”

• • •Q: I can’t believe that “FlashForward” wasn’t renewed for the 2010-11 season. What are they thinking over there at

ABC? — Suzzi F., via e-mailA: “FlashForward” did start out a little shaky, but when it came back after its hiatus, it had really pulled its act together

and was cohesive, exciting, well-acted and thoughtful. I am sad we won’t get closure on a lot of those open story lines, as I was looking forward to seeing what the future of the show would bring. Hopefully a cable station like TNT, SyFy or FX will decide to pick up the show for next season.

I took most men’s much-loved sandwich, the BLT, and transformed it into something that tasted great but didn’t come between two or three slices of bread. I can still hear the rave reviews.

Train a Cat? It’s PossibleDEAR PAW’S CORNER: Can you train a cat? — Jan-

ice in Wheeling, W.Va.

DEAR JANICE: Sure, although I’m of the opinion that most cats train you. Seriously — they learn, pretty early on, what “buttons” to push to get you to give them food or treats, let them out, pet them or stop typing a pet column and pay attention to him or her.

But you can have the last laugh and train your cat to respond to commands or signals. Remember that cats are very different than dogs in their approach to the world and in how they respond. In fact, you’ll want to somewhat mimic the way that your cat learns to train you: They observe you quietly, then test a few dif-ferent methods of getting what they want and adopt the most successful one.

It’s also important to note that cats don’t respond well to negative rein-forcement. You can shake a can of pen-nies at them or hiss or yell “no!” when a cat is doing something you don’t want it to do, and that might work in the short term, but mostly their response is to run away.

If you’re training a cat to spe-cifically do something on com-mand, you need to use positive reinforcement almost exclusively. This is rewarding the cat with a treat, a stroke or a kind word im-mediately after it responds to the movement you’re trying to teach. The cat needs to develop a positive

association with the activity.Keep training sessions short and somewhat spon-

taneous. Most cats don’t last more than five or 10 minutes per session. And don’t get discouraged if your cat doesn’t “get” it after days or weeks. Instead, be patient and look for new ways to make the con-nection with your cat.

You love all of the mature trees surrounding your house. They are what attracted you to the property in the first place. Unfortunately, some of them have been struck down by disease and need to be cut down. You have never felled a tree before and could use some tips on doing the task safely.

Before you start, check local ordinances. There may be some re-strictions in place on felling trees in your area. Make sure you follow them and use the appropriate supplies. You will need an axe and a quality chainsaw of the proper size.

Generally, the larger the tree, the harder and the more dangerous it will be to cut down. To reduce the risk, you should find someone reliable to help, preferably someone with experience in felling trees. You should also select a nice calm day to tackle the chore. Do not try to cut down a tree on a day with strong winds. They could whip the tree in a direction you do not intend.

You may cut down small trees less than six inches in diameter in one pass. Larger trees, on the other hand, require more work. To start the process, determine first how the tree naturally leans and how weighted it is. This will tell you on which side you should notch the tree and

where it should fall. The area where it falls should be fairly open and on even ground. If it isn’t, the tree could get stuck on another tree or catch on something as it falls, or it could bounce, roll and kick back at you once it hits the ground.

Next, you need to assess the condition of the tree. Dead trees will be easier to cut down. To determine if the tree is completely dead, hit it with an axe. A hollow sound indicates the tissue inside is dead; a thunk indicates some of it is still living. If this is the case, you may have to work a little harder to get the tree down.

To make the actual cutting and cleanup after-wards easier, you should remove as many branch-es as possible, especially any that might stop the

tree from falling. Then you may make the notch. Again, this should be on the side of the tree you want it to fall toward. Cut a third of the way through the tree near the base. This will serve as the bottom cut. Then make the top intersecting cut a foot above at a 45-de-gree angle. When you are ready, move to the other side of the tree and make the final cut two inches above the bottom cut in order to create a hinge. This will ensure the tree does not kick back and upward.

The moment you hear the tree crack and begin to move, get out of the way fast and let others know the tree is falling. The tree should fall fairly quickly. Wait a few mo-ments to ensure it is not going to roll and then cut it up, starting with any remaining branches and finishing with the trunk.

Felling a tree imposes a great deal of risk. Familiarize yourself with the process and make sure you know what you are doing. Get a buddy to help you and work carefully.
