letters of offer sent to excited students and parents who have sought to join our community 2017. A reminder if you still have not enrolled, please do it very quickly as we are finalising numbers this week, which will mean that late enrolments could be disadvantaged. At the Junior School enrolments for all grades are still being taken and enrolment interviews will commence in June with all prospective students for 2017. It was wonderful to see a large number of families attend the Junior School Open Day yesterday and engage with the broad range of classes that were being conducted. Feedback suggests that parents were very impressed with music and art classes and the configuration of classrooms which allows for greater collaboration between staff and students to enhance learning outcomes for the boys. Visitors also noted the strong sense of pride that boys had in their school and the mature and good natured way that boys interacted with each other both in the classroom and in the playground. This strong interest in the Junior Schools augurs well for future enrolments and is a great credit to our teachers on the Junior School site. With strong interest in 2017 enrolment I ask that all enrolments for Grade 3 to 6 for 2017, be submitted by July 1, 2016. For all enrolment enquiries please contact the Registrar, Mrs Monica Nugent at [email protected] Board Retreat As I have noted many times in The Star, we are very blessed to be part of the Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) network. Over the coming days we will have several visitors from EREA attend the College to assist us with important strategic matters. On Friday evening and Saturday our Board members will be joined by Mr Paul Williams and Mr Chris Smith form EREA to participate in a retreat programme. A key part of this programme is to induct new members of the Board, in particular to examine the significance of The Design, the foundation document that guides all Boards of Edmund Rice schools across Australia. Board members will also take time to work on the next iteration of our Strategic Plan which guides our College in its operations by articulating our vision, mission and values whilst identifying our strategic priorities for the next four years. We are particularly grateful for the commitment and expertise of Board members who give up a great deal of their own time to ensure that we remain an authentic Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition, whilst also ensuring that we have strategies and action plans in place to ensure that we can avail ourselves of opportunities and manage our resource base to ensure that we can be the best Catholic school for boys that we can possibly be. I sincerely thank Chris and Paul for their assistance and support of the College. Business Manager Review Another important function that EREA assist us with is the formative review of senior staff. This week we are joined by Mr Geoff Doyle and Mrs Christine Longmire from the EREA Corporate Services team and Mr Jorrick Chivers from MacKillop

College for the review of our Business Manager Mrs Narelle Green. This process is a very informative one for staff as it commends good performance, identifies future professional learning needs and opportunities and further informs their practise in our context as a Catholic school for boys in the Edmund Rice tradition. Such processes are invaluable for our staff and our wider College community in ensuring that we continue to provide boys with an authentic Catholic education. I thank Geoff, Christine and Jorrick for giving so generously of their time and expertise to support this important review processes. Catholic Education and the Upcoming Election In the lead-‐‑up to the Federal election on July 2, the Tasmanian Catholic Education Office has developed a range of resources to inform parents about how political parties believe their education policies will support school education, and Catholic education in particular. The website, www.SchoolFundingFacts.com is available to provide further information on Catholic education and school funding at the national level. I encourage you to keep informed about the ongoing funding debate as it has significant consequences for the education of our children.
In the spirit of Blessed Edmund Damian Messer

DEPUTY PRINCIPAL MR TERRY BL IZZARD “…all too often we are dealing with boys who make poor choices that impact here at school as well as home”
Cyber World I have stated previously that I believe electronic social networking has changed the face of schooling and young people’s interactions. This change has taken place in quick time and while some have been able to take up and use the strengths that social media offer, all too often we are dealing with boys who make poor choices that impact here at school as well as home. Below is a guide that may help parents: Instagram Age requirement 13+ Instagram is an online photo/video sharing site that has a social networking feature. It allows users to take pictures and videos, apply filters to them, and share them on a variety of social networking services. Although users can choose to share privately, most, including children do not. Kids seem to want lots of people 'ʹfollowing'ʹ them on the site so allow unfettered access without thought to the sorts of people that may want to grab a copy of the picture posted. If location services are set to 'ʹon'ʹ on the devices then the GPS position of where they were when they took the pic is easily obtained. Often used for cyberbullying. It is a fun way to share if over 13 and used correctly with full privacy settings enabled. KiK Age restriction 17+ KiK is a messaging app that is highly appealing to young people because it is free. Communication is via any Wi-‐‑Fi network so calls/texts do not come out of phone credit. As we know Wi-‐‑Fi is now readily available in community areas such as fast food outlets. A phone or phone number is not required to use this app. It is the number one app for causing problems in schools at the moment as younger kids are using it if often behind their parents’ backs and it is often linked to an Instagram account. Because of the large number of very young, vulnerable kids and teens on the site, it is also a haven for online predators. Police around the world regularly warn about this one. One to avoid. Not rated as suitable for 17+ for nothing! Snapchat Age restriction 13+ Snapchat is a photo messaging app which allows users to take photos, record videos, add text and drawings, and send them to a controlled list of recipients. These photographs and videos are known as "ʺSnaps"ʺ. Users set a time limit for how long recipients can view their Snaps and this can be from 1 to 10 seconds. After this time they will be hidden from the users screen, but are totally retrievable if required. Known as the 'ʹsafe sexting'ʹ app, Snapchat if used to send fun harmless photos
5
Vol.5, Ed.14 May 26 2016 , PAGE ST VIRGIL’S COLLEGE – THE STAR
is fine, but when young people use it to send naked or semi naked pictures it causes serious problems for those involved. Highly problematic here at school. Omegle Age restriction 17+ Omegle is a free online chat website that allows users to communicate with strangers without registering. The service randomly pairs users in one-‐‑on-‐‑one chat sessions where they chat anonymously. Its tag line is 'ʹtalk to strangers'ʹ. You can imagine the quality and calibre of the 'ʹstranger'ʹ you will find! Be warned that anything that has the following disclaimer on its own website should be avoided at all costs. "ʺUse Omegle at your own peril"ʺ, enough said. Ask.fm Age requirement 13+ A Latvia Based social networking site where users can ask each other questions with the option of anonymity which almost all users on this site do. It was founded as a rival to Formspring. Because of the anonymity it encourages extremely nasty questions and is used extensively to bully and harass. Best to avoid as nothing positive happens here. Finally I was taken by a news article from the United States which highlighted some recently released data showing that 1 in 10 young people in the US between the ages of 17 and 24 have missed out on gaining work owing to things they have posted online. I am particularly concerned with some boys use of social media such as Facebook and iMessage, in particular their use of inappropriate language. Cyber experts strongly recommend parents monitor young people’s use of social media and educate them in appropriate language. We use the line at school -‐‑ “think before pressing send”. Paid Part-‐‑Time Work I have had a number of conversations with boys and parents recently about part time work. I was surprised to hear how many hours some boys are doing. A National study has found six to eight hours of part-‐‑time work per week is really the optimal amount of time for students of the Grade 9 and 10 age group before it has a detrimental effect on educational outcomes. It also suggested that there are many benefits for boys when they do have some part time work commitment. The study found significant negative impact on a student’s education when they work longer than eight hours per week. Our own past data showed a small number of boys were working in the concerning range, but interestingly over 50% of boys did little or no part-‐‑time work. I will be conducting a survey with the current Grade 9 and 10 cohort in the coming weeks and will report back to parents. Given the optimal recommendations it may be a good time for parents to review hours worked by their sons. Buses I was disappointed this week to have a visit from a representative of Metro expressing concerns about the behaviour of boys on the 361 Lauderdale via Lindisfarne and Cambridge morning run. The concern was particularly about throwing food. They have delivered very clear footage and have made it clear that they will be issuing warning letters and/or bus suspension notices. This is very disappointing on a number of levels, none more so that the inconvenience to parents a suspension will cause. I urge all parents of boys who catch any bus to remind their sons of the very clear expectations as outlined in the Student Diary.

JUNIOR SCHOOL MR ANDREW PINELLI , HEAD OF JUNIOR SCHOOL
Gospel Spirituality We invite people into the story of Jesus and strive to make his message of compassion, justice and peace a living reality within our community.
EREA Touchstone The celebration of the Mass and adoration of the Blessed Eucharist are at the forefront of our Catholic tradition. No matter what the faith tradition a boy might come from, these moments, as part of our personal faith journey, are significant. This Sunday, May 29, we have been invited to join in the Walk with Christ. This is a very public way of showing our faith and belief as Christians. Such a procession does have a long history in our faith and is a significant occasion in many countries around the world. As a school group, we will also be carrying our own College ‘Book of Life’ which contains prayers and intentions written by our boys. These will be given to the Carmelite Monastery for the Sisters of Carmel to pray and reflect upon. Later this term, the Junior School has been invited to sponsor Masses within our Cathedral Parish. Attendance at, and participation in, the Mass is a focal point of our belief in the risen Christ. As part of the Mass we reflect on the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ and what it means to be a Christian in the world today. Further details about how you and your son can participate in these Masses will come home soon, but I do ask and challenge all of our boys and their families to attend and support one of the Masses in the Cathedral and to volunteer to be actively involved in the liturgy. These activities are central to the way that the boys acknowledge their faith tradition which is so central to St Virgil’s College – “A Catholic boys school in the Edmund Rice tradition.” Open Day Yesterday, we welcomed many new potential enrolees to our campus for Open Day. Our visitors were treated to many of the fantastic opportunities that our boys are experience, including Art and Music lessons happening during the day. Our

visitors were impressed with the clever way our landscape has been utilised to maximise the useable spaces. There were also many favourable comments about the size of the classrooms and the great resources that the staff and our boys have access to. Expressions of Interest for enrolment need to be submitted as soon as possible as we commence enrolment interviews for 2017 in June.
Edmund Rice Education Australia (EREA) Heads of Junior School Conference Last week, I had the privilege of travelling to Perth, Western Australia, to meet with other Heads of Junior School from EREA Schools all over Australia. It provides a great opportunity to discuss issues that reach out across the country that

impact on primary schools on topics like curriculum and social justice. Not only do we visit other schools and observe what they are doing and see what resources are available, we also took time to investigate the work that the Edmund Rice Network is doing to serve those in our community and society less fortunate than ourselves. Wood Work This week, Grade 6R completed their trips to the Senior School Campus for woodwork with the finishing off of their birdhouses. The boys have been careful to measure and cut accurately to turn a piece of timber 1500mm long into an attractive bird house. Well done boys on a great job. Next week Grade 3 S will commence their block of woodwork. We look forward with expectation to see what Grade 3 produce next.
Autism Awareness Day Recently, Autism Awareness Day was celebrated nationally. As a result of this awareness raising, the Junior School Campus is having an activity for the boys to participate in called, ‘My Life in a Box’. This is a fantastic, inclusive activity

for all our Junior School boys to join in with. All our boys are asked to participate by bringing in objects that tell something about themselves. These objects could include favourite books, food, objects, places they have been on holidays, sports, pets or other interests – only limited by imagination. We are all looking forward to learning even more about our boys next week. Walk With Christ This Sunday commencing at 1.15pm from St Joseph’s Church, we have been offered the opportunity to process up Harrington Street to St Mary’s Cathedral as part of the annual Walk with Christ procession. This is a significant event and a great opportunity for our boys to process together affirming their Catholic and Christian beliefs. Details about participation were sent home this week and are available ‘In the School Bag’. Junior School P & F Upcoming Events This year’s Family Footy Fun Night looks like it could be a real blockbuster with North Melbourne playing Hawthorn on the big screen in the Junior School Hall on Friday June 17. Please mark this date on your calendar with more details coming home closer to the date. If you are on Facebook, please join, share and like the SVC Junior School P & F page which is https://www.facebook.com/St-‐‑Virgils-‐‑College-‐‑465593033527084/ Family Life Night This week, our boys and other family members in Grades 4 and 6 were invited to attend the Family Life nights. These sessions are important to support families, and our boys, as they discuss a range of topics as they grow and develop. Thank you to all the boys and their families who were able to avail themselves of this important opportunity. Junior School Notices We fully understand that sometimes your son may not bring home information in a timely fashion. Could I please encourage all parents to check out the “In the School Bag” link on the College website as it will contain any current, relevant notes that you may need. Calendar Update Parents and guardians are reminded to subscribe to the College’s online calendar. The great advantage of this is that if there are necessary changes to dates these changes can be made immediately. Water Polo: SVC Sharks Last Friday our team lost to Hutchins Magenta in a hard fought game. This is the second time we have played this team since our first game, three weeks ago. What was evident was the improvement all of our players have made since Round One. We were able to score six goals and drive the ball through the attack. We do still need to work on defence. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kye Direen, for listening to the coach and scoring goals! ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD Fletcher Marron for continuing to improve – no doubt through his
dedication to improving his swimming fitness and strength by swimming 1.2km on Sunday!!
Soccer Under 9 (May 7) PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Luca Di Venuto ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD: Tom Prokopiec SVC Gold 2 lost Cygnet Primary 8 St Virgil’s Gold played an excellent side from Cygnet Primary at Soldiers Walk this week. SVC Gold are beginning to work as a team this week, although unfortunately the score board didn’t reflect this and the boys lost 8 – 2. Oliver Cupit kicked an absolute cracker in the first half to open the scoring and scored from the centre circle catching the Cygnet keeper napping and Tom Prokopiec managed to dodge a couple of defenders before powering through a second goal before half time. Stand out players for St Virgil’s included Lucas Dunnewijk, with a couple of excellent plays through the centre and being unlucky not to score on at least two occasions, Archie Gray showing tenacity on the backline and Ethan Leary ran his heart out in a fantastic game also. St Virgil’s were unlucky not to score more freely and had quite a few scoring opportunities which were unable to be capitalized. Oh, and James Martindill lost a tooth in the half time orange frenzy. Hope the Tooth Fairy is generous James! PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Tom Prokopiec ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD: Zac Zehmeister SVC Gold 4 lost to Princes Street PS 6 Coming off a win against their school buddies (SVC Blue) last week the boys were full of excitement and enthusiasm and keen to put on a show against this week opposition! We saw some brilliant goal-‐‑keeping from Lucas and Luca, awesome attacking from our forwards, solid defensive moves from the backline and sensational goals from Tom (3) and Luca (1), however Princess Street proved a little too strong with some deadly runs and accurate kicking winning 6 – 4. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Archie Gray ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD: Lucas Dunnewijk

UNDER 11 SVC Blue 7 defeated South Hobart 2 A fantastic team performance! Everyone played very well with the skills shown from defence to attack was remarkable. Goals: Charlie Banks 3, Jenson Cooke 1, Krystian Jankowiak 1, Own Goal 1. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jenson Cooke for great attacking. ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD: Cooper Lockley for great goalkeeping. SVC Blue 5 lost to Friends 8 Even though a loss this week it was a great team effort. The game was very fast and highly skilled. Goals: Keenan Kemp 2, Fletcher Salter 2, Lachlan Brennan 1. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Fletcher Salter for a great all-‐‑round game. ENCOURAGEMENT AWARD: Alex Macdonald Saturday Hockey Grade 3/4 SVC Sticks 0 lost to Friends Red 8 In difficult conditions against a strong team the boys toiled stoically. There were glimpses of some good tackling by Oscar and Connor. We were a little unlucky not to have troubled the scorer. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Oscar Brewer for good improvements in attack and defence. Term 3 Sport: JSSATIS Basketball Registrations are now open online for JSSATIS Basketball in Term Three. Please register your interest in playing this sport by June 17. We will also be looking for Coaches and managers (will need ‘Working with Vulnerable People’ card). Training times are not essential. staff to ensure that student wellbeing is maximised. www.reachout.com is an online resource, which provides very useful information for young people and is also used within the HPE curriculum. Reach Out have just released a new service to help parents help teenagers: ReachOut.com/Parents. When a parent recognises that a teenager needs help, experience indicates that they are more likely to get it. ReachOut.com/Parents provides information, tools and resources to help parents and carers support the 12–18 year-‐‑olds in their family environment. On the site, parents will find:
• fact sheets, stories, practical tips and tools covering a range of topics, issues and experiences that are relevant to teenagers aged 12–18 years; and
• an online community forum where you can talk to other parents about your experiences and work through your concerns in a safe, anonymous environment.
Drama News Mrs Jennifer White April 23 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death at age 52. His plays and sonnets have been performed in nearly every major language on every continent. Hundreds of words and phrases originated with or were popularized by Shakespeare, such as “Wear your heart on your sleeve” (Othello), “Full circle” (King Lear), “Bedazzled” (Taming of the Shrew), and “There’s the Rub” (Hamlet). To mark this anniversary, the Grade 9&10 Drama students are exploring the language and artistry of William Shakespeare. For the first undertaking in the Introduction to Shakespeare unit, the boys used 12 random lines from A Midsummer Night’s Dream combining them in no particular order to create a short performance piece which is well worth watching. It can be viewed at http://www.stvirgils.tas.edu.au/celebrating-‐‑shakespeare/ Grade 7 Drama students are about to embark on Roald Dahl’s Fractured Fairy Tales. The boys will be creating performance pieces based on this parody of traditional folk tales featuring surprise endings in place of the traditional happily-‐‑ever-‐‑after. Grade 8 boys are currently undertaking a unit on Physical Theatre. Their most recent task involved producing a silent-‐‑film style comedic performance piece, which encompassed physicality, exaggeration, facial expressions and sound, but without spoken word. Learning Enrichment Mrs Cherie Gibson and Ms Leesa Baker On Tuesday May 24, a group of Grade 7 and 8 St Virgil’s boys hosted a group of students from Mt Carmel College for a social get-‐‑together. The two groups were meeting for the first time. After the initial introductions, boys and girls were
