St. Bernard Parish special needs residents are eligible for assistance with evacuation

St. Bernard Parish residents with Special Needs are eligible for assistance in evacuating should a mandatory evacuation be called, either due to a hurricane or another type of emergency which might arise in the parish. Parish President Guy McInnis urges those who need help evacuating to register with the Office of Homeland Se-curity and Emergency Preparedness by calling 278-4268. We will send you the necessary forms which must be completed and re-turned to the office.

We also have our Special Needs Forms and instructions on our website, http://www.sbpg.net on the Homeland Security Page. Click on the Evacuation Assistance Button on the right side of the screen, then click print. Read and follow the instructions carefully when filling out the form. Incomplete forms will not be accepted.

In order to be eligible for this program you must process a valid ID or driver’s license. If you do not have a valid ID or driver’s license you will be processed by the St. Bernard Parish Sheriffs’ Office for identification purposes.

Forms are held for one year, from hurricane season to hurricane season. If it has been a year since you filled out a form, it is your re-sponsibility to fill out a current form and return it to us. Also, if your contact information changes (address and telephone number) or if your circumstances have changed since you last filled out a form, please fill out a new form and forward to the following address:St. Bernard Parish Government • Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness • 8201 W. Judge Perez Dr.Chalmette, LA 70043 • ATTN: CTN Program Manager

Those with Special Needs would include two categories: 1. Residents who require a degree of medical care that exceeds

that of general population, such as the disabled, the infirmed or those who are electrically dependent.

2. Residents who do not otherwise have transportation to get them to a bus pick-up area where they would be taken to a shelter outside of St. Bernard Parish.

It is important that Special Needs residents pre-register with the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness to in-sure transportation. “If you do not have transportation, we need to know about it,” McInnis said.

Residents who register with the program would be evacuated in the time period of 60-54 hours before tropical force winds make landfall on the Louisiana coastline, according to the St. Bernard Parish Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness.

It is your responsibility to listen to the public service announce-ments which will give you specific directions, as the hurricane ap-proaches.

Once we hit the 50 hour mark prior to landfall, the parish will not be able to provide transportation and residents will have to find an-other means of getting out of the parish. This is why we are getting the word out early.

Community and civic organizations interested in meeting with the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Prepared-ness concerning this program are welcomed to call our office at 504-278-4268 to set up a time when we can meet with your group.

St. Bernard historical Mondays kick offIt is time to kick off St. Ber-

nard Historical Mondays. Here are the upcoming events for February:

2nd Monday, February 13th. St. Bernard Historical Commu-nity Meeting - 6:00 pm at Nunez Community College

The first, general meeting of the St. Bernard Historical Com-munity will be held on Monday,

February 13th, at 6:00 p.m. The meeting is open to anyone with an interest in St. Bernard Histo-ry. It will be informal and feature historical presentations and col-laboration.

3rd Monday, February 20th. St. Bernard History Lecture Series - 6:00 pm at the Nunez Community College Auditorium

The first ever lecture of the

St. Bernard History Lecture Series will be held on Monday, February 20th, at 6:00 p.m. The topic of this lecture will be the “Geological History of St. Bernard” and will be presented by Curtis Manning. An alternate title might be “A Description of the Histori-cal Evolution of the Land and People of St. Bernard from

4,000 Years ago to the Present by Tracing the Changes in a Single Acre of Land and Thus Giving a General Overview of St. Bernard Histo-ry.” However, we thought that title was a bit unwieldy. This will be the first in (what we hope will be) a series of lectures giving the chronological history of St. Bernard.

A mother and her boyfriend were arrested for severely beating her 12-year-old son with a belt for hiding snacks in his pillow-case, Sheriff James Pohlmann said.

On Jan. 27 at around 6:30 p.m., Sheriff Pohlmann said depu-ties responded to a call about a young boy screaming.

The boy’s mother, Lakeesha Allen, 34, and her boyfriend, An-thony Young Jr., 31, both of 80 Jupiter Circle in Violet, were both booked with cruelty to a juvenile. As of Jan. 30, both Allen and Young were being held in St. Bernard Parish Prison awaiting bond to be set.

Sheriff Pohlmann said the boy, who suffered injuries to his face, neck, chest, back, legs, and arms, was transported to St. Bernard Parish Hospital where he was treated and released. The boy is now staying with a family member.

Both the mother and the boyfriend admitted under question-ing they had beaten the child with a belt over him hiding snacks.

Tickets are on sale now at WOW Café and Wingery in Chalmette or online at www.thecompanystb.com, follow the link to purchase. Tickets for all of The Company’s productions are $10.00.

Directors Mary Collins and Carol Ortego said it is a great show with a pretty amazing cast. “We’ve had a few rehearsals and we are impressed by this group of actors and actresses.” The cast includes a wide range of ages and members from around the metro New Orleans area. The Company is an all-inclusive theater company, “We welcome everyone, regardless of age, or abilities.”

The Company has also in-cluded hearing impaired transla-tors during their last production. “We are going to try to include translators in as many shows as possible,” Producer and board member, Tony Ortego said.

Sister Act is a musical com-edy based on the hit 1992 film starring Whoopi Goldberg. The musical features original music by Tony and eight-time Oscar winner, Alan Menken. This up-lifting musical was nominated

for five Tony Awards, including Best Musical.

The story line is centered around disco diva, Deloris Van Cartier, who witnesses a murder by a gang and is put in protec-tive custody in a place they are sure she wouldn’t be found-a convent. She is disguised as a nun, but soon finds herself at odds with the lifestyle and the uptight Mother Superior. Delo-ris however breathes new life into the church and community by inspiring the choir using her disco moves and singing talent. Sister act is filled with powerful gospel music, and speaks to the power of friendship and sister-hood.

Sister Act is the second production in The Company’s season of shows. Little Shop of Horror was the first show and the first one to be held at the Valiant Theater and Lounge. “It has an intimate set up and great atmosphere,” Ortego said. The Company will produce the musical, Hairspray in the sum-mer.

The show is produced by Tony Ortego. Technical Direction by John Collins and choreography by Mary Collins. The cast for Sister Act includes: Kathleen Moore (Deloris), Brian Rosen-thal (Eddie), Christina Early (Michelle), Justin Russell (TJ), Roxanne Gray (Sr. Mary Martin of Tours), Kernesha Miller (Tina), Lisa Boycott Luongo (Moth-er Superior), Vieta Collins (Sr. Mary Robert), Victoria Pepin (Sr.
