J.F. Gauthier's Art Club celebrates the New Orleans Tricentennial

OANA gets into the holiday spirit

The J.F. Gauthier Art Club is celebrates the New Orleans Tricen-tennial. These students have made paintings of local landmarks and architecture. The Art Club Members also made New Orleans themed ornaments for the school Christmas Tree. All of their won-derful artwork is being displayed in our school lobby.

See more photos online at www.thestbernardnews.com.

The Old Arabi Neighborhood Association got into the spirit of the season with a pair of events recently.

First up was the annual Christmas and Holiday Party. Coordinated by OANA Board Member Kelly McCartney, the event was held at the Kitchen Table Café. Nearly 60 friends and neighbors gathered for the fun.

At the party, President Barry Lemoine made a special presentation, awarding Debbie Smith with the first ever Friend of Old Arabi Award. Lemoine said he wanted to recognize Smith for her decades of service and commitment to the Old Arabi community.

"For over 40 years, The Old Arabi Food Store has been an icon in our neighborhood, and Debbie has been a huge part of that history. Her kindness, generosity, and constant presence in the area is something we wanted to pay homage to. Now that she has sold the business, we wanted her to know she will forever be a part of the Old Arabi family."

Special thanks to Katherine Lemoine for coordinating the award and its presentation.

Later that week, Lemoine was joined by fellow Board Officer Linda Van Aman at Arabi Elementary for another special delivery. As it has for the last several years, OANA teamed up with Arabi Elementary and adopted ten families in need for the holiday. Each family received a $200 gift card to the newly opened Canseco's Market, a $300 gift card to Walmart, and a voucher for a Christmas tree at Renaissance Gardens.

Van Aman was quick to thank OANA member Maegan Dobson for coordinating the donation with the school, and said the $5000 dona-tion will allow those families to have a great holiday meal, get some shopping done, and enjoy the spirit of the season. "Our membership is really proud to help others during this special time of year," she said.

Carla Carollo, the Principal of Arabi Elementary School, said she appreciates the generosity of OANA. "It really means a lot that the neighborhood association remembers us each year. It's very kind and thoughtful and really helpful to some of our families in need."

St. Bernard Parish Officials, local Historical Society and Society of the War of 1812 observe Anniversary of the Battle of Lake Borgne

Thursday, December 14th, 2017 marked the 203rd anniver-sary of the Battle of Lake Borgne, the first military engagement in the British campaign for New Orleans culminating in the Bat-tle of New Orleans, January 8th, 1815. A British amphibious force consisting of shallow-draft ves-sels with canons defeated the American naval force after very fierce, bloody, hand-to-hand combat. Despite the American loss, the engagement alerted American military forces that the British had arrived in Louisiana waters and that the British land invasion was imminent. Louisi-anans organized a successful defense of New Orleans which secured American ownership of the Mississippi Valley.

Former St. Bernard Histori-cal Society president Anthony A. "Tony" Fernandez organizes the annual anniversary obser-vance of the Battle of New Or-leans. Pete Robin placed his beautiful yacht, the Septem-ber Song at the disposal of the Society in 2017. "The Americans displayed unmatched cour-age in this important engage-ment" said Tony Fernandez. Lt. Commander Bonnie M. Elling-ton, Bellechasse Naval Station, cast a wreath in Lake Borgne representing the United States Navy. "The courage displayed by the United States Navy was unsurpassed and contributed to ultimate victory in the Battle of New Orleans, a campaign which assured America's westward

expansion to the Pacific Ocean" said Lt. Commander Ellington. William "Bill" Allerton, second president national of the Society of the War of 1812 cast a wreath in memory of William Canby, a United States Naval officer who lost his life in the Battle of Lake Borgne. Members of the Society of the War of 1812 must trace their ancestry to military veterans who served in the War of 1812. Parish President McInnis thanked the Historical Society, the Tourist Commission and all those who supported the commemorative event.

The St. Bernard Parish Tourist Commission and Tourist Depart-ment support the anniversary annually. "It is so very important

to remember our history and the sacrifices of American armed forces throughout our history" said Katie Tommaseo, St. Ber-nard Parish Office of Tourism di-rector.

Parish officials joined the His-torical Society December 16th in observing the Battle of Lake Bor-gne anniversary. Those present included Parish President McIn-nis, Assessor Jaylin Bergeron Turner, St. Bernard Parish Tour-ist Commission president Gary Huettmann and commission member and Historical Society President Lena Torres Nunez and tourist commission member Alvin Jones and Parish Histori-an William de Marigny Hyland. St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office holds sobriety checkpointDeputies with the St. Bernard Sheriff’s Office conducted a sobri-

ety checkpoint in Arabi on the evening of Dec. 21. Sheriff James Pohlmann said officers stopped vehicles to check

for impaired drivers and ensure the safety of motorists during this busy holiday season.

St. Bernard Parish motorists are reminded the Sheriff’s Office safe ride home program will continue through Jan. 2.

The free Holiday Ride Home program was started in St . Bernard Parish in 1986 and was the first of its kind in the New Orleans area.

Residents who have too much to drink during the holiday season to call the Sheriff’s Office at (504) 271-2501 to receive a free ride home from a deputy, no questions asked.

A Sheriff’s Office deputy will pick you up and take you to your home in St. Bernard or, if you live outside the parish, they will take you to a Sheriff’s substation where you can make arrangements to be picked up by a friend or family member.

About two dozen people take advantage of the program each year.
