St. Bernard Parish, LA (Nov. 17, 2016) — e Arlene and Joseph Meraux Charitable Foundation partnered with the Greater New Orleans Foundation and Restore the Mississippi River Delta to host Community Conversations at Docville Farm on Tuesday evening. At the event, the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA) updated nearly 100 area residents on the State’s master plan and received valuable input and feedback that will be used in developing the dra plan that will be released in January 2017 for formal public comment and review.

“St. Bernard Parish is on the front line of the war against coastal land loss, and it is important that the people who live here are part of the conversation about how we protect our community,” said Bill Haines, a board member of the Meraux Foundation. “e Meraux Foundation was pleased to host the event at our Docville Farm campus, and we are grateful for those who attended, our co-sponsors, and the CPRA.”

Haines continued, “We established Docville Farm as a place where people could gather, exchange ideas, and work together to improve our community; and this event was a shining example of that purpose.”

One of the main pillars of the Meraux Foundation’s programs is environmental stewardship, and its initiatives include plantings, coalition building, and a number of education and awareness programs.

In addition to the customary functions of foundations, the Meraux Foundation manages, maintains, and preserves

extensive and diverse landholdings. Each type of land poses complex and often delicate challenges in its preservation, protection, and use, but the Foundation aims to maximize both short- and long-term benets for the community and ecosystem.

If you would like to receive emails about future community events at Docville Farm, you can subscribe to the Meraux Foundation’s email newsletter at merauxfoundation.org by clicking the “Meraux Newsletter” button at the bottom of the home page. You can also visit merauxfoundation.org/events to view a calendar of events.

If you would like more information on the Coastal Master Plan, CPRA includes many resources on its website, coastal.la.gov.

About the Arlene and Joseph Meraux Charitable Foundation The Meraux Foundation is a private 501(c)(3) nonprot organization that was established by Arlene Meraux to benet the community of St. Bernard Parish by leveraging its landholdings. Today, the Foundation’s board of directors is presided over by Arlene’s niece, Rita Gue, and consists of members Floyd Gue, Bill Haines, Chris Haines, and Sidney Torres, III. Guided by Arlene’s vision, the Board is implementing an innovative strategy to create lasting change and build a better St. Bernard. e Meraux Foundation is a founding sponsor and organizer of Startup St. Bernard.

the economic implications of purchasing just three holiday gis from a locally owned establishment? e tax dollars generated, support of local business owners, and contributions to the unique assets within a neighborhood makes a community thrive. Small Business Saturday is taking place this weekend on Saturday, November 26, 2016 as a national initiative to support locally owned businesses across the United States.

Sma l l Busi ness Saturday began in 2010 to celebrate the Shop Small movement and drive shoppers to purchase from local merchants.

St. Bernard Parish is home to the highest percentage of locally owned and family

operated businesses in the Greater New Orleans region.  St. Bernard Economic Development Foundation (SBEDF) Executive Director, Andrew Jacques, believes the benefits of supporting local commerce is important to economic growth in the parish.

“When you opt to shop local, you are choosing to support local jobs, celebrating the local fabric of the community, and ultimately retaining more money in the local

    economy,” said Jacques.Several retail stores

will be open on Small Business Saturday including Old Arabi Marketplace, Gypsy Soul Sisters Art Market, All About Me, Studio Inferno, Local Flair, e Cottage Store, and Aniston Lane Boutique.

Wendy Haines, Owner of the Cottage Store says she is excited to welcome holiday shoppers for the rst time this year in her new space in Studio Arabi.

“e small business shopper is why I unlock my door each day,” explained Wendy. “e holidays are my favorite time of the year.  I look forward to helping my costumers nd the perfect gi for loved ones.”

SBEDF also reminds residents and visitors they can also support other small businesses including restaurants, professional service providers, and pharmacies, not only during the holiday season, but all year long.

“A purchase made at any locally owned business is an investment back into the community; it helps neighbors pay their home mortgage and provide for their families,” explained Jacques.

    Daisy Bedell JacksonDaisy Bedell Jackson

passed away at home with family in Elkins, Arkansas, on Sunday aernoon, November 13, 2016. She was 93 years and 7 months of age.

Daisy was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Alice Brewster and Richard Knight Bedell, on April 8, 1923. She spent most of her life in the greater New Orleans area, and she was truly a New Orleans Lady.

Daisy loved Jesus, her family, Christmas, giving gis to others, and music.

New Orleans presented many musical opportunities for her. Daisy sang on the radio, and she won many dance competitions when she was young. She also sang many solo performances to audiences at City Park, Audubon Park and Werlein’s music store. Her mother taught her to waltz at age ve, and the family had a player piano. In later life, she and her late husband, Paul Alexander Green, won a bottle of pink champagne for their dancing at a large family event. Her favorite singers were Ella Fitzgerald, Nat King Cole, and Tony Bennett.

Daisy was very proud of her work as a telephone operator at the Walnut Exchange in New Orleans. Daisy oen rode the cable cars when she was young, and in middle age, she loved to dress up and take her children to Canal Street to window shop and have lunch in one of the department stores and drug stores. Daisy loved so-shell crabs, and told stories of nding them on the beaches of the Gulf coast.

Daisy was born during the year of Calvin Coolidge becoming president, was a child of the Great Depression, and was a young woman during World War II; and leaves behind a wonderful legacy of four generations, including three great-great grandchildren.

Daisy Bedell loved her family very dearly. In her last years, she spent many hours praying both day and night for her large family.

Daisy outlived all of her ve sisters, Kathleen, Alice, May, Thelma and Mattie. Daisy is survived by her six children (and their families), Sandra Lee O’Farrell (Donald), Donald Ray Mullen (Sue Ann), Gordon Blake Green (Lynn), Erroll Wayne Green (Lucy), Karen Green Lewis (Bob), and Natalie Green Hibbard (Terry); her grandchildren, Beth O’Farrell, Barton O’Farrell, Amy Mullen, Scott Mullen, Steven Mullen, Alexander Green, Ellen Green, Peter Keyes, Jr., Stephanie Lewis, Christopher Butler, Dane Butler, Ashley Shaffer; and her many great and great, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Daisy oen said during times of hardships, “is, too, shall pass”.

Daisy was an exceptional person, lived an extraordinary life, and is loved by many. She will never be forgotten, and we hope to see her again someday in Heaven.

Services were held November 18, 2016 in Saint Bernard Memorial Gardens in Chalmette, Louisiana under the direction of Saint Bernard Memorial Funeral Home.

Technology backred on three young men booked with the of two outdoor surveillance cameras worth a total of $1,000 when a camera got a photo of one of them and it went to the phone of the property owner, Sheri James Pohlmann said.

The cameras were on trees on property in eastern St. Bernard Parish and had Internet connectivity, making the photo go straight to the phone of the land owner, the sheriff said. He discovered the the and called the Sheri’s Oce.

One of the thieves was directly identied through the photo when he was later stopped for driving recklessly and the other two were also in the vehicle, the sheri said.

Both stolen cameras were recovered at the home of one of the passengers in the vehicle and all were booked with the. e owner was given the cameras back by

You can obviously be arrested for driving the wrong way on a one-way street – but especially if illegal drugs are found in the vehicle.

Sheri James Pohlmann said a man now living in Chalmette and one from New Orleans were stopped Monday aernoon, Nov. 14, going the wrong way in the 2500 block of Packenham Drive - near the driver’s residence - by agents of the Sheri’s Oce Special Investigations Divi-sion.

e sheri said the trac stop ul-timately led to the nding of a sub-stantial amount of drugs worth at least $17,000, including 4.3 ounces of powdered MDMA, nearly 1.5 ounces of heroin, 58 prescription pills, near-ly an ounce of marijuana, four guns including a shotgun and $855 cash.

Aer the stop, an initial inves-tigation by agents found two hand-guns, 54 Tramadol pain pills, 21 grams of marijuana and two Oxy-codone pain pills in the vehicle, the sheri said. Both the driver, Terrence Dejean, 23, 2512 Packenham Drive; and passenger Eddie Patterson, 26, of New Orleans a convicted felon, were arrested.

From the ndings in the vehi-cle, both were booked with posses-

sion of a rearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance, with possession with intent to distribute the Tramadol and mari-juana and possession of the Oxycodone.

Patterson was also booked with possession of a rearm by a con-victed felon.

A search warrant for Dejean’s residence was also obtained from a judge. At the residence, 4.3 ounces of powdered MDMA worth an estimat-ed $12,100, nearly 1.5 ounces of her-oin worth $4,000, two hydrocodone tablets, some marijuana, the shot-gun and a handgun and $855 cash was found, Sheri Pohlmann said. Several types of drug paraphernalia including scales were also located.

Dejean was booked alone with possession with intent to distribute heroin and MDMA, and possession of marijuana, the hydrocodone and drug paraphernalia found in the res-idence.

e two men were being held in St. Bernard Parish Prison, with bond for Dejean set at $100,000 and bond for Patterson set at $30,000.

  • Cabrini’s Science Squad was invited to St. Christopher School where they made the Water Cycle presentation.

Science chair Ann Smart with student assistants Lauren Blady’17 and Elizabeth Favret’18 explained to the 59 students in the three, sixth grade classes, how water cycles through the environment and the processes t goes through.

“Showing the children that if we start with water in the ocean, it can evaporate and go up into the atmosphere,” Ann Smart explained. “When it cools, it condenses in

clouds and comes back to earth as precipitat ion. On earth, it can soak up into the ground fall

into a body of water like a lake or river. It can be frozen in a glacier or be taken in by a plant or an animal.”

e presentation is specically designed for the elementary level and includes various activities to engage them and keep them on the subject. “We began with a water cycle song using hand motions like water going up into a cloud or falling back to the ground.” From the song the students were given a leather cord with a lanyard hook on it. ey started at one station and took a bead representing water then moved on to the next station. Each station is sign-labeled, such as blue for the ocean or green for a plant. ey rolled a die to nd out where to go next and what process got them there. ey did this 20 times then

tied it off to hang from their book bags to remember the water cycle.

T he Sc ience Squad is an academic activity open to all schools in the New Orleans area that helps expand the STEM concept at the elementary level. Hands-on science activities exploring Chemistry, Physics, Life and Environmental Sciences are led by Cabrini science teachers and student assistants. Teachers can choose from a variety of topics, or request a topic and the Science Squad will do their best to accommodate you. Topics are available in the

Science Squad brochure mailed to all schools or on the Cabrini website. Schools may invite the Science Squad to visit their classes, or have their class visit the Science Squad at Cabrini.

Through the support of a St. Bernard Parish Community Devel-opment Block Grant (CDBG), and St. Bernard Parish Oce of Film and Television, a professional lm indus-try standard workforce development training will be oered at Nunez Community College. is program is coordinated by Jamie Landry-Zim-mer, a lm industry workforce de-velopment professional, and will be oered free of charge to those who qualify and are selected to partici-pate.

e program will provide train-ing that meets industry standards in acting, independent lm-making and production. Film industry standard seminars will also be oered free of charge to the general public. To-gether, these training programs will situate St. Bernard Parish as a center for the development of an indigenous Louisiana lm industry.

e rst portion of the program is professional lm and television actor training. Modeled on conser-vatory training, the actors’ program is for working actors in Louisiana; rst oered last spring to St. Bernard residents only. e program is now open to all Louisiana residents. Par-ticipants will be selected by audition, resume, and intent to use training to work as an actor.

Acting classes will be taught by well-known casting director, acting coach/instructor, and professional actress, Candi Brooks Silvestri. Ac-tors will also be guided in profes-

sional development, resume building, and social media/website training.  Each participant will also receive a lm industry standard head shot from make-up artist Jami Ross, and photographer Jackson Beals of Mag-azine Street Headshots.

Applicants (who must be 17-years-old or older) should send a resume and head shot or picture via email to Jamie Landry-Zimmer at [email protected]. e dead-line to apply is Wednesday, Nov. 30 at 5:00 PM Central Standard Time.  Only qualied applicants will be in-vited to audition Saturday, Dec. 3.  Classes will be held Saturdays, Dec. 10 and 17, and Jan. 7, 14, and 21 from 9:00 am – 2:00 pm. Headshots will be taken the weekend of Jan. 27 - 29. Up to een participants will be selected for this round of training.

“We are committed to providing industry standard workforce devel-opment opportunities to not only our residents of St. Bernard, but to all residents within our service area who are seeking employment in this industry,” said Nunez Communi-ty College Chancellor, Dr. omas Warner.

St. Bernard Parish President, Guy McInnis, also expressed his support for this type of program that pairs educational institutions and local industries.

“St. Bernard Parish Government is committed to working with high-er education and other industries like lm and entertainment in providing

jobs to local residents,” said McInnis. This film industry standard

workforce development has broad-based support from state and local ocials who have worked closely with the lm industry in Louisiana and have grown this sector of the economy through tax incentive pro-grams.

State Senator J.P. Morrell com-mented, “Tax incentives are a very good thing for our state, and we have to do everything to foster it through a strongly developed workforce.”  Mor-rell continued, “Nunez Community College’s eorts are directly support-ing job development in Louisiana and is making our investment better.”

Morell’s sentiment is echoed by State Representative Garofalo, Di-rector of Film and Television for St. Bernard Parish-Ryan Fink, Louisiana Film and Entertainment Association (LFEA) President-Robert Vosbein, and State Representative Walt Leger, III.

Representative Garofalo said, “Nunez Community College is cre-ating workforce training that is valu-able not only for St. Bernard’s econo-my, but for our state’s economy.”

This training is vital to both local lm productions and actors. According to Fink, “A 10% state tax incentive is given for every local hire, which is benecial to everyone when a production employs Louisiana residents.”  In addition, St. Bernard just adopted a Parish Ordinance to add another 3.5% to approved pro-

ductions that hire local residents, “With the support of the Council and Parish President, Guy McGinnis, the new incentive program will help lock in more productions to lm in St. Ber-nard.”

Robert Vosbein stated, “Unique programs like this one at Nunez Community College prepare future talent and industry workers for qual-ity lm jobs. ey complement the second to none infrastructure and opportunities that our state oers.”

“is kind of workforce training tool will bring us a step closer to what we hope the program will continue to be—a job creator and economic driv-er for small business growth, “said State Representative Walter Leger, III.

Supporters of this initiative include: e St. Bernard Parish Oce of Film and Television, St. Bernard Parish Government, St. Bernard Parish Economic Development Foundation, St. Bernard Parish ADA Board, e Meraux Foundation, Louisiana Film and Entertainment Association (LFEA), New Orleans Video Access Center (NOVAC),  New Orleans Film Society (NOFS), Louisiana Economic Development Department of Film and Television, THE RANCH Studio, Incubator, LLC, Magazine Street Headshots, e COOL Cooperative,  State Senator J.P. Morrell, State Rep. Ray Garofalo, State Rep. Paul Hollis.

Bicycle Social Rides Start Upin St. Bernard

For the past few weeks, colorfully lit bicycles have been traversing parish streets. Grab your bicycles and join other bicyclists for a leisurely bicycle ride through St. Bernard neighborhoods. Similar social rides have been taking place throughout the metropolitan area and now the rides have come to St. Bernard. Initiated by Bike St. Bernard and Linda Hebert, who started the popular Gretna Social Ride, the rides take place weekly. For the rst few months, the rides will begin at First Baptist Church

in Chalmette, but new routes are being developed, and eventually the plan is to have the ride initiate from dierent locations in the parish. e rides take place on ursday nights and start promptly at 7:00 pm. If you want to purchase lights for your bicycle, they will be on sale before the ride starts, and people will be available to help you put them on your bicycle.

For more information, see the St. Bernard Social Ride Facebook page and the Bike St. Bernard Facebook page.

They sewed enough pillowcases so that each war veteran can be given a pillowcase and as new war veterans enter the home they, too, will receive a patriotic pillowcase. The idea was developed by Oliver Pollock Chapter’s Organizing Regent, Mary

Ellen Menge. e ladies met once a week for 7 weeks to complete the project. Pictured at the presentation are: Darleen McDonald, Christyn Elliott, Mary Ellen Menge, Michele Colindres, Bonnie Cook, Martha Bauman and Ann Bellard. Missing from the photo is Kay Alpaugh who hosted the ladies each week.

According to a survey recently commissioned by Shriners Hospitals for Children®, many Americans do not follow key fire and burn safety tips during the holiday season, which can be one of the most dangerous times of year. at is why, on November 15, Shriners Hospitals for Children will once again promote holiday re safety and burn prevention with the Be Burn Aware campaign.

Shriners Hospita ls for Children will release public service announcements (PSAs), featuring actor Joe Minoso from the NBC hit show Chicago Fire, urging families to take precautions like watering live Christmas trees daily to reduce re risks. Additionally, a holiday re safety and burn awareness quiz will be available online to test public knowledge and provide tools to learn more.

Here's how you can help:Be the Voice of Fire and Burn

Safety in Your Community: Fresh cut Christmas trees are the most dangerous source of house

fires during the holidays. One of the key ways to educate the community about tree safety is to take the information to the source – anywhere live trees are sold.

Create a Visible Reminder: Shriners Hospitals for Children created Fezzy-themed Be Burn Aware tree tags with useful tips on how to keep Christmas trees re safe. ese tree tags can be taken to local tree distributers and handed out at community events. Visit the materials ordering system on shrinersvillage.com to order your safety tree tags.

Spread the Word: We encourage you to share this useful information with your friends, family, businesses and the public at any community event.
