Finding innovative solutions to common challenges

New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center Receives Award

Learning to live with too much/not enough waterAt first glance, the over-com-

mitted water resources of the Colorado River and the increas-ingly frequent floods of the Mis-sissippi River seem to present

different challenges for the corresponding regions. How-ever, both challenges share a common underlying neces-sity: bringing together stakeholders and the best science for better decisions at the highest levels.

This discussion is the foundation for the many conver-sations held during the first day of the 10X Water Summit, the first gathering of Ten Across, a forum for exchanging ideas and solving problems common to cities that are on the US Interstate 10 corridor. This inaugural 10X summit is being held in Baton Rouge, La. and co-hosted by The Water Institute of the Gulf and Arizona State University in partnership with The Baton Rouge Area Foundation, the City of Baton Rouge, and the City of Phoenix.

Following the Interstate 10 corridor the 2,400 miles from Los Angeles to Jacksonville, the Ten Across initiative is developing a durable platform for exploring, understand-ing, and communicating the critical issues of our time. This uniquely diverse and rapidly growing cross section of the country presents many of the challenges of the 21st cen-tury in the highest relief including water, energy, human migration, urban development, and global commerce. Ten Across is designed to reveal this linear region as a compel-ling window on the future and as a living laboratory for the country as a whole.

“From intense rainfall in New Orleans to drought condi-tions in Phoenix, gathering such a diverse group of lead-ers, decision-makers, and policy experts in one place is the cornerstone of how innovative solutions are devel-oped,” said Jeff Hebert, Vice President for Adaptation and Resilience at The Water Institute of the Gulf.

In the Ten Across region, climate change and other hu-man factors fuel drought in the West and inundation in the East. The pairing of these extreme desert and coastal con-ditions provides a foundation for the summit discussions. While conditions in the Colorado and Mississippi water-sheds differ, shared concerns include long-term resilience, multi-jurisdictional policy issues, data-rich forecasting and visualization, and the skillful navigation of environmental, economic, and societal adjustments to change.

“It’s our belief that the future is arriving early, in many senses, in the I-10 corridor. With closer observation in this area, one can see the critical issues of our time registering in both the built and natural environments,” said Welling-ton “Duke” Reiter, originator of the Ten Across project and Arizona State University senior advisor to the president. “We’ve developed Ten Across to assemble this evidence in a compelling and coherent format, so as to inspire the necessary responses. We’re beginning with water.”

The New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center has received a “Safest 70” award from the Louisiana Workers Compensation Corporation (LWCC), the largest workers’ compensation carrier in the state. The award acknowledg-es excellence, outstanding per-

formance, and commitment to workplace safety, and is given to the top 70 of over 16,000 en-tities insured by LWCC.

The New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center was recognized based on the effec-tiveness of their safety efforts in preventing injuries and main-

taining a consistent workplace safety history in 2017.

“It is an honor for our facility to be recognized by LWCC,” said Michael J. Sawaya, President and General Manager of the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center. “Providing a safe work environment is our

highest priority and is a team effort. We consider our em-ployees internal customers and value their input while collabo-rating on ways to continuously improve our facility. Philosophi-cally, this in turn results in a saf-er environment for our patrons/external customers as well.”

Finding ways to increase water availabili-ty in the West and keeping excess water out of homes and business in the East focused the discussion Thursday at the inaugural 10X Summit on Water held in Baton Rouge, La.

In the West, Arizona’s growing population is working to maximize a limited water supply while in the East, communities struggle with what to do with too much water either from rainfall or storms.

One such example is the Gentilly Resilience District in New Orleans which combines a number of approaches to help retain water while also providing spaces for recreation and education. On the other side of the spectrum, Arizona is working toward public education and innovative water conservation efforts such as reusing 100 percent of wastewater to meet what the state knows will be in an increasing demand.

“At the core of each region’s challenges is the need to find new and more efficient ways to address water management,” said Jeff Hebert, Vice President for Adaptation and Resilience at The Water Institute of the Gulf. “Although our water management challenges are very different – flood and drought – developing solutions to address them holistically are very similar.”

Hebert was joined by a host of water experts from around the world Thursday during the second day of the 10X Water Summit being held in Baton Rouge, La. to discuss managing water within cities.

The discussion was one of many held during the second day of the 10X Water Summit, designed to stimulate the creation of key partner-ships and shape Ten Across as an essential forum for the exchange of ideas across many different shared challenges with the first one being the issue of water. This inaugural 10X was held in Baton Rouge, La. and hosted by The Water Institute of the Gulf and Arizona State University in partnership with The Baton Rouge Area Foundation, the City of Baton Rouge, and the City of Phoenix.

Following the Interstate 10 corridor 2,400 miles from Los Angeles to Jacksonville, Fla., the 10X initiative is developing a place where experts can explore, share, and communicate about critical issues facing not only local communities, but with application around the world. The 10X initiative shows that this region is a window onto the future and stands as a living laboratory for the biggest challenges including water, energy, human migration, urban development, and global commerce.

In the Ten Across region, climate change and other human factors fuel drought in the West and inundation in the East. The pairing of these ex-treme desert and coastal conditions has provided a compelling framing device for the Summit. While conditions in the Colorado and Mississip-pi watersheds differ in texture, shared concerns include long-term re-silience, multi-jurisdictional policy issues, data-rich forecasting and vi-sualization, and the skillful navigation of environmental, economic and societal adjustments to change.

“The 10X initiative fosters these kinds of discussions for improved communication and innovative thinking across a variety of issues,” said Wellington “Duke” Reiter, originator of the Ten Across project and Arizona State University senior advisor to the president. “We’ve developed Ten Across to assemble this evidence in a compelling and coherent format and it was only fitting that we began that journey with water.”

Cherished brother of Jessi-ca Wininger (Timmy), Cheri Fincher, and the late Jennifer Bruno. He was the grandchild of Joseph S. Bruno (Marie), Ruby Dale Keaton, and the late Katherine S. Jay was a graduate of Chalmette High School, class of 1998. He was very patriotic and loved the American Flag. He also loved Hot Wheels and anything related to Star Trek. He enjoyed Mardi Gras, and loved at-tending parades. Jay could often be found outside, wearing his baseball cap, with a Coca-Cola in his hand. He loved his family above all, and was never happier than when he was with them.

A memorial gathering took place in Jay’s honor at Covenant United Methodist Church, 115 E. D’Amour Street, in Chalmette on Saturday, May 19, 2018, from noon to 3:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family re-quested donations of new Hot Wheels cars, at the memorial service. Strike Up The Band At The St. Bernard Parish Library

Summer reading hits the top of the charts at the St. Bernard Parish Library with the start of the 2018 Libraries Rock sum-mer reading program. The six-week annual event begins with a drumroll on June 4th with a Fun Fair Open House present-ed by one of the library’s most long-standing and generous sponsors, McDonald’s of St. Bernard. Families are invited to visit the library between 10 a.m. and noon for games, face painting, photos, prizes, color-ing sheets, cookies, and fun.

We will keep the music go-ing on with the ‘Libraries Rock’

story craft program on Tuesday, June 5th at 1 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. and on Wednesday, June 6th at 11 a.m. Listeners will hear stories celebrating books, reading and libraries. Mr. Zane Spitnale of Spitnale’s Superi-or Martial Arts Academy will have library goers moving and grooving with a free martial arts demonstration on Thurs-day, June 7th at 11:30 a.m. And there’s more! It would not be summer reading unless Har-vey Rabbit comes to the library. Harvey, along with Mr. Tim and Ms. Laura, will have their boo-gie shoes on and will be ready to dance up a storm on Friday, June 7th at 3 p.m. and round-ing out an extremely full playlist will be Karen Konnerth of Calli-ope Puppets. She will present ‘Calliope Kate’ on Saturday, June 8th at 11 a.m. The Harvey Rabbit and Friends show and the performance by Calliope Puppets are part of the library’s Summer with the Arts series which is funded by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Devel-opment, Department of Cul-ture, Recreation and Tourism in cooperation with the Louisi-ana State Arts Council as ad-ministered by the St. Tammany Commission on Cultural Affairs and donations by Arlette and

Wayne Nunez with matching funds from Shell Oil’s Gift Pro-gram. All events at the library are free and open to the public. Groups are asked to call ahead to register.

While readers are just getting warmed up by attending lots of fun programs they are remind-ed to sign up to read for prizes by registering to receive their musical activity sheets, official summer reading bookmarks, and event calendars. The first 100 families to register will re-ceive a Super Summer Read-er yard sign and the first 200 Pre-Readers through 5th grad-ers will receive a Rock Star Rub-ber Ducky figure. Pre-Readers through 5th graders will also re-ceive a Cane’s Bookmark that allows them to read to earn a free Cane’s kids combo. Every-one registering between May 30th and June 13th will also re-ceive a free movie pass to see the 25th anniversary showing of the Sandlot, compliments of Chalmette Movies.

For more information, please stop by the library at 2600 Pal-misano Blvd. in Chalmette or call 504-279-0448. Patrons can “like” the library on Facebook to get updates on library activities and they can also check out the library’s website at www.mysb-pl.org.

Voices Foundation Awards ScholarshipsThe Voices Foundation, a St. Bernard non-profit committed to

educational and artistic programs, recently awarded three scholar-ships to Chalmette High School graduates who have shown con-tinued public interest in the dramatic arts - Sophie Stechmann, Dylan Fuselier, and Emily Snyder.

Board members Katherine Lemoine, William Schneider, and Rose Sand presented the awards at the school’s recent Award’s Night.

Emily Snyder was given the Milton Sand Artistic Scholarship for her work in graphic design and videography. This award is named after Milton Sand, a Chalmette High School graduate who excelled in several artistic mediums.

All three of these students will attend Northwestern University next fall.

Lemoine said this year’s recipients were very deserving.“Each one of these graduates are not only great performers, but

great students and more importantly, great people. We are incred-ibly proud of their accomplishments and know they will continue to make the parish proud.”
