Archdiocese of Vancouver ARCHBISHOPS OFFICE June 16, 2019 To the clergy, consecrated women and men, and lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Vancouver: This year marks and infamous anniversary—a half century of legal abortion in Canada. As we look back over the 50 years since the Supreme Court of Canada struck down the federal abortion law, we see the effects the decision has had on our country, our province, and in the lives of so many peo- ple. In addition to the millions of babies who have been abort- ed (approximately 100,000 a year nationally), countless of individuals and families have suffered as a result of the courts decision and our nations unwillingness to respond. The effect of legalized abortion on our culture is staggering: a devaluing of human life that prepared the way for the legalization of assisted suicide, sex-selection abortions, pressure by the medical community to abort in the case of fetal anomalies, and the eradication of children born with Down Syndrome or other disabilities. In response, the Pro-life Sunday Collection supports, through a grant process, organizations that provide hope and healing: Crisis pregnancy centers support and walk with women. Rachels Vineyard responds to the aftermath of an abor- tion decision. We strive to achieve conscience protection for all who work in healthcare. Pro-life groups work to provide education on euthanasia and assisted suicide, journeying with patients at the end of their lives. Numerous organizations pray and witness for life. On behalf of all who benefit from Pro-life Sunday funding, I express my gratitude to each of you for your gener- osity. With the assurance of my prayers for you and your families, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, J. Michael Miller, CSB Archbishop of Vancouver ARCHBISHOPS PRO-LIFE SUNDAY MESSAGE

ARCHBISHOP’S PRO-LIFE SUNDAY MESSAGE

Amen.

BUTTERFLY RELEASE Saturday, June 29th

Coquitlam’s Talitha Koum So-ciety is staging a “Butterfly Release” from 1-3 p.m., on Saturday, June 29 at Blue Mountain Park.

The society, which draws its name and inspiration from the Gospel of Mark (in which Christ resurrects a girl by saying, “Talitha Koum,” or “Rise up, little girl”), operates two recovery homes for women.

The public is invited to support the society by purchas-ing/reserving a butterfly, which they can release in per-son on June 29 or ask that it be released in their name. Cost is just $25 (plus a small service charge). “Set Her Free Summer – Butterfly Release” will also feature en-tertainment by Tony Prophet, refreshments and activi-ties for all ages.

Consider this as a graduation gift, a dedication to some-one you have loved and lost, or a way to symbolically support transformation for struggling women. Butter-flies are available online at talithakoumsociety.org or at facebook.com/TalithaKoumSociety/.
