What do great meals, do for us?
Everyone of us can hopefully recall a great celebration that included food. Here in Hawaii, after an
event is talked about, there is almost immediate discussion about what food should be served. Food is
important in our lives, nutrition is primary, but so is the social interaction (talking story) that takes place
when we join others for a meal. So too, with the Mass, the celebration of the Eucharistic meal.
Our Catholic tradition is especially blessed to have the opportunity to gather as a family of Christ for
the Mass. An altar becomes the table of the sacrament and the bread and wine become the elements
that are changed into the Body & Blood of Christ. So important was this event that, at the Last
Supper, Jesus gave us this meal of remembrance. Yes, it was the will of Gods only begotten Son that
we should share in His divinity by partaking of this sacred meal. His passion, death, and resurrection
was a sacrifice for our ransom and purification from sin and death. It was an act for our redemption and
cleansing. To ensure that the memory of so great a gift would stay with us forever…He gave us the
Eucharist as spiritual food in the form of bread and wine…a divine meal!
The Dominican Saint and theologian, St. Thomas Aquinas, offers great insight into the meaning of
the Eucharist. He asks: “What could be more wonderful than this? No other sacrament has greater
healing power, through it, sins are purged away, virtues are increased, and the soul is increased with an
abundance of every spiritual gift. It’s offered in the church for both the living and the dead, so that
what was instituted for the salvation of all, may be for the benefit of all. It was to impress the vastness
of this love more firmly upon the hearts of the faithful, that Our Lord instituted this sacrament at the
Last Supper.”
The table of the Lord is always set. The divine menu is pre-fixed. Everyone is invited and there’s a
seat for all. Come and eat, come and drink, at the banquet of salvation. This great meal brings us
together in His name.

Our Checkbooks
“…and Jesus answered: sell what you have and give to the poor…then follow Me.” (Matt: 17-27).
“A checkbook is a theological document; it will tell you who and what you worship.” (Billy Graham)
When we look at our checkbooks, what does it tell us about ourselves and our stewardship of our God given treasures? Do we see “stuff” or perhaps “toys” or are we satisfied with our generosity to those in need? The more satisfied we are with this reflection, the better our stewardship.
